Since I'm not a recording artist and unfortunately have never gotten the opportunity to watch a live show at the Blue Room, this review is first and foremost for the little store attached to the facilities. It's Disneyland for Jack White fans, fans of his record label, or really music fans in general (though the former will get the most out of it). A small space crammed with merch for purchase, old school instruments and contraptions, and lots of records. I saw several people come in with their guitars to take advantage of the recording booth where you can get a record pressed on the spot. I didn't have a tune to record, but left with a couple of records to play at home and a photo strip from the very old school photo booth (it only works some of the time according to the staff). Speaking of the staff, they're all super sweet and friendly and willing to help you out with anything. It's a fun, quirky spot a bit off the beaten path in Nashville, and worth a visit if you're interested in checking out some tunes, music history, or kitschy paraphernalia. read more

Even though I was not planning on growing my record collection more while in Nashville I still had to check out Third Man. I didn't really know what to expect so upon walking in and being greeted by the staff it was a little overwhelming to take in all at once, there's just so much... Every kind of thing, every where! It's sensory overload to a music nerd. You'll find records from the various Third Man acts all over, including live at Third Man recordings by many incredible artists and pressed to vinyl. There is tons of merch as well as a very nice selection of books published by Third Man. Hi-end turntables and affordable units are in abundance as well as supplies. They've got you covered. One of the coolest and surprising things I saw was a booth where a couple girls were singing along with some headphone accompaniment. I didn't give it much thought until upon leaving realized that it had been recorded and pressed to a record for them to take home! Very nice. I didn't take my partner because she's not too into records and thus I thought she might be a bit bored, but in hindsight that would definitely not have been the case! What a unique record store for vinyl junkies! Lots of fun stuff to browse and one of a kind vintage "toys" including the automatic recording booth! "Your Turntable is not Dead" This is the slogan at Third Man Records and they are doing everything they can to make sure that it is true. Third Man's founder, Jack White, came to prominence in the band the White Stripes and has been consistently fascinating since emerging from Detroit in the late 90s. The White Stripes were a vibrant throwback to Blues and Garage Rock, taking ideas that were from previous generations and bringing them into the modern era. The same is true of Third Man Records, they are taking a format that belongs to previous generations and updating it to be innovative today. When the White Stripes were covering Country songs from Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn it was a cross genre surprise but now it makes the eventual move to Nashville seem inevitable. For a person who's most famous band is built on a lie about his fraternal relationship to his bandmate it makes sense that Jack White would curate his own history and create his own museum. The Third Man Records compound is a place of Pure Imagination befitting the Wonka-like figure at it's center. It has a recording studio, offices, and a performance space, but the most accessible and prominent area is the store. Rarely has so much of interest been packed into such a small space. Somehow, without feeling cluttered they have managed to fill every inch of the store with wonder. There are plenty of records for Jack White, his side projects, his side projects side projects and his legendary friends. If you don't have a turntable you can purchase one there or buy all kinds of merch items from standard T-shirts and posters to a Third Man Rubik's Cube or fine jewelry. You can gawk at the technologies that time has forgotten like a 16mm video jukebox and a record your own record machine. The display case features actual Grammys. The walls showcase the inventive records that the Third Man team have thought up and then executed with the wizards at United Record Pressing just a few miles away. Even the bathrooms are cool. I know it sounds weird but make sure you go to the bathroom while you are there because it allows you to see more of the property. In the men's room they have a kooky upside down bidet that functions as a shower for the touring bands that come through. If you are a music fan it's cool place to visit and if you are a Jack White fan you might as well surrender your wallet to them. read more

I'm sure if you're a hard-core Jack White fan going here the first time feels like a pilgrimage...if that sounds like you, make sure to visit at least once when in the Nashville area and you'll probably give it 5 stars. I'm a moderate fan of White's but it's easy to see he took time to curate every inch of this somewhat small storefront to his studio-- every decorative piece on the wall or a shelf and every item for sell seems hand-picked by him. As an overall record store, the selection is small-to-moderate but fairly priced. The coolest items for sale the third-man in-studio live LPs, all about $15 each so you can search to see if your favorite act has recorded a set in the studio attached to the store and pick it up. Friendly service, some cool books, LPs, shirts and things to buy and some neat things to look at. Stop by the photo booth to get a memento of your visit if you're so inclined and you're out the door. read more

The.coolest.experience. If you are and Nashville and love music or anything Jack White, you have to stop here. Even if you only have 5 minutes, just visit the record store. If you have more time on Friday or Saturday, go on a tour. You have to get their earlier, about 9:30-9:45 because they only allow 10 people on the tour. I walked into Grant Park after work, on a solo mission to find my friends watching The Raconteurs. It was hot, sticky and pushing through the masses, I started to panic a bit. Texts weren't going through; I wondered if I'd ever be united with my pals in a crowd of 75,000+. And then, I heard that voice belting out "Steady as She Goes". I stopped, transfixed, and didn't move for the remaining 40 minutes of their set. Suddenly, I didn't need friends. Love at first listen! August 31, 2009. I'm checking into a San Francisco hotel on business; Jack is checking out after his band The Dead Weather played Outside Lands. Eye contact is made, I'm sure of it. Okay, probably not but the sexual tension is real. I melt! January 27, 2011. The unconsummated love affair continues. I'm in Nashville for work, and a colleague and I have a total of 1.5 hours (in lieu of lunch) to visit Third Man Records. Food schmood when there's a possibilty of a Jack White sighting! (TMR also doubles as a recording studio). We jump in a cab and head well out of our way to peruse Third Man's collection of all things Jack White. Jack White is a very cool cat. From his Tesla radio tower perched atop the Lego colored building block shape of his recording studio Third Man Records this is the House That Jack built. And you don't just have to stand outside and gawk. You can come inside. You are invited. Does this mean that once inside this childlike fantasy land you can climb into a large wooden chair with Jack White himself dressed as Santa Clause and perch on his lap while telling him what you wish for (him, serenading you while playing an electric guitar sans Santa Clothing)???? Unfortunately, no. You don't get to see Jack. Or really the recording studio either. What you get is to step into a front room filled with some memorabilia of days gone by like the actual Lego pieces used in the White Stripes video "Fell In Love With a Girl". But don't distress, fun is still to abound. Because Jack has a very vintage, very wooden, very art deco recording booth that still works. And for a $15 contribution to preserving history you too can become a recording star by shutting the almost sound proof door and making a 45 second record. It will be stamped with Third Man Records. And when you are done you can put the said record in an old rusty mailbox outside and mail it to the love of your life. In fact, if you are too shy to sing into the microphone (dear God is Jack listening to these recordings??) you can just speak a heartfelt message or poem. Let's just hope the person you are mailing the record to has a record player. In addition to the vintage recording booth there is also a vintage photo booth you can take pictures in. I saw Jack on an episode of one of my favorite TV shows (American Pickers) and he ended up buying some antique stuff from Mike Wolfe (who has a store in Nash) so the guy has great taste in antiques. Of course you can buy albums (some rare) and t-shirts. Third Man Records put out some cool, exclusive stuff in the music world (become a member for the best access). Wonderful gift shop (independent record label) in Nashville for fans of Jack White (the White Stripes). While wandering around the city we decided to add this shop to our list and had a nice little walk over to the shop. It was certainly not in the "high traffic" area, but the walk was really nice. We arrived around the same time as a few other groups so it was a bit crowded. The store itself is very small, but they have a ton of gift ideas in multiple rooms so we were able to semi-spread out and browse without bumping into one another. I noticed a recording area for you to go and record some music and they even had a cool photo booth! We looked around and ended up purchasing some Third Man Records gifts to bring back to some friends we know. The girls working the counter were friendly and offered some assistance as needed. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place!!! This is the headquarters of my love of all things Jack White and now what he produces for other inspiring, aspiring and amazing musicians. The store front is tiny, a few hundred feet. I didn't have the pleasure of going into the backs for a concert or to see the photo booth but I understand it is nothing short of magical for music lovers. Third Man embodies all things that I wish most shops thought about-they care about their customers, they don't over price their goods, they are kind and have SUPER fun things you will always want. For locals-well let's just say they have the best end of the deal. Every time they produce a new record/single the locals have a chance to pick up a limited edition of that for just a few dollars more than the mass variety. This shop is a firm believer in the tangible, local supporting industry. 100% love for this place. It's a little off the beaten path and only open for a tiny window of time, but it was SO worth finally getting into the tiny shop that is Third Man Records. Yes, I, too, am a Jack White fanatic, and have fantasized for a long time about stepping into the little shop attached to the recording studio that Jack built. This is the actual place where all of the magic happens!! The last time I was in Nashville and tried to visit this place we arrived at 4:15 in the afternoon only to find that they had closed at 4pm. This time we planned better and managed to get there 10 minutes after they opened. The small shop was already packed with music junkies from all over the country making the same pilgrimage. I could have spent hours combing over every little thing in here, but since some less enthusiastic members of our group decided to wait in the car I soaked in all of the 'Jack White'-ness I could, did a twirl around the space, bought a sticker and a t-shirt and left. I look forward to the next time I am in Nashville so I can return and gather some more Jack White goodies. read more

OK, yes. I MAY have a tiny obsession with Jack White (just a weeeee bit) despite his recent um... issues in the news with his former spouse and a certain other duo who also lives in Nashville, but I will always hold a special place in my heart for his music. I ridiculously have lived in Nashville... oh quite some time and have never stopped into Third Man Records until Monday.. Yes, I fail as a fan! BUT. With my lovely best friend in town who was visiting from California, we decided to fix my missteps as a supporter and do the Third Man Records tourist thing. It is quite small inside, and there were about 4 other people there when we came in not including the fashion forward staff member dressed in yellow and black only (Jack enforces a dress code people). I love the random assortment of white stripes collectables and the eccentric thrift store/antique vibe of the decor (some odd mannequins that probably come to life at night were atop the photo booth). The photo booth was definitely my favorite. 3 coins ($3) got you an old school photo strip with a very unique 3rd Man backdrop. Of course we had to have two sets each ;) I admit that I'm not a vinyl diehard like most of Jack's followers, but I definitely enjoyed listening to the record player they had blasting and looking through the unique assortment bands that have visited and recorded at his studio. They also sell t-shirts and other small items like stickers and buttons for a very reasonable price ($25 for a shirt ain't bad). Despite how hipster and chic the Third Man employee was, she was surprisingly very lovely and even took our picture for us. Thanks for the great customer service! Since I don't have vinyl I can't see myself stopping in here on regular basis, but it is definitely a great tourist spot and your go to place for unique vinyl if you are a Jack White fan as well! read more

This place is not very big but definitely unique. Some people might be expecting a big record store and this place is not it. A colleague, who is a big fan of Jack White, wanted to stop by and get some record albums. We came in after having lunch at the Peg Leg Porker down the corner. The store is laid out beautifully - open and clean. It also have many interesting machines from the past that are still functioning. There's a small recording studio like a phone booth where you pay to go in and records some music onto a vinyl. A photo booth and a coin-operated monkey band. A bit of fun carnival nostalgia. Next door appears to be the Third Man Record's recording studio with a beautiful metallic door. Visiting a place like this has been most enjoyable. read more

This store is small, I mean real small! But it is pretty awesome..... The store is located in a not so great neighborhood and parking is a little difficult (make sure you lock your car). Then head to the front door of the store and ring the bell so they will let you in. We popped in the day before heading to Bonnaroo so it was packed with everyone doing the same. The prices were actually pretty reasonable we bought 3 records and walked out only spending $30....not too shabby! read more

500th review! For this momentous occasion, I had to review a Nashville favorite. This is for the blue room. I have no words. It's probably the coolest place to see a show in Nashville. They are pretty strict on the no picture policy so you won't find too many of them out there. It's also nice because you can see a show through your own eyes and not the screen of the person standing in front of you. The right wall is a half pipe. You have been warned. I almost slid down it. The floor is carpeted and the left wall has a giant elephant head. The stage is high enough to see and behind it is a room where they can press a record. We attended the Shabazz Palaces show, which was pressed while he performed, and it was killer! A. the show was succinct and B. it added to the vibe. The men pressing the record were wearing white lab coats. They have a mini bar with beer, wine, and cocktails. Then there is a courtyard outside and bathrooms. The walls are tiled in yellow and black and the stalls have curtains on the bottom. It's so cool. I love it! The entrance may also be tiled, but it's definitely lit in a funky way. Third Man will bring in all sorts of artists and events. Sometimes they will even show a movie! You should definitely check it out. Even the ticket stubs are pretty fantastic. read more

Our first time here and it was enjoyable. It's a small store but has the perfect amount of vinyl and artifacts to look at. We used a machine that made a mold of an electric guitar. We got a few shirts but I didn't find anything I really needed or wanted to buy as far as vinyl records. We did walk back to the venue side to see the back area but it was closed. The restrooms are cool looking for the yellow and black decor. If you are in Nashville this is well worth the stop. So many big artist have recorded there and it's easy to get to. They have street parking and a small lot to park at. read more

Awesome place! We've been to the Detroit location as well and love them both! I was able to get some really nice & rare vinyl records and the staff couldn't have been more helpful and pleasant to work with. There's lots of cool merch to buy, artwork to see, recordings to listen to, people from all around the world to talk to and a palpable buzz and creative vibe in the air. Take the studio tour if you're able but it books up QUICK! They took us through the creative process, areas, technical gear, art department, lunch lounge, performance spaces and merchandise warehouse, etc. We even saw some pre-release materials and masters from some of the bests artists you have and haven't heard of! My highest recommendation goes to Third Man Records for many reasons. Support the Art and the Artists and we'll all be better off! read more

I definitely don't really ascribe to that vinyl, hipster retro thing, but I do have a special place in my heart for The White Stripes and wonder when The Raconteurs will ever get back in the studio again. Anyway, the four of us went and it was definitely a lot smaller than I imagined especially since the whole space is so large, I was surprised to see that the store space was small. What was inside though was mostly collection of vinyl. A couple of band shirts-and if you can find something you like in the bargain section it's a pretty sweet deal. Despite it being a pretty hipster spot it's definitely not snooty. The staff there was very friendly and helpful with my friends who wanted to use the vintage photo booth and the guy who wanted to use the recording booth to record a demo. Every time I come to Nashville, I make sure I can swing by this amazing shop. They rearrange and change it around so its always a little different when I go in. The employees are always very nice and may I also note, very attractive. There seems to be a plethora of beautiful women and a disproportionately high number of redheads working there. I found both of these things enjoyable. Also great attitudes from everyone. I've never gotten bad service or over heard any of them being rude or "too cool" as other reviews have stated. I buy records there each time I go. First time I got The White Stripes' De Stijl, White Blood Cells and Get Behind Me Satan. This trip I got The Stooges eponymous album and Blind Willie McTell Volume 4. My fiancé went there a few years ago without me and Jack was in the shop that day. They're both from Detroit and my fiancé was at one of The White Stripes first shows in Detroit so they chatted about that. He said Jack was very kind and happy to talk at length with a fellow musician and pose for a picture after. I bought a couple T-Shirts this time and last when I went in. I am a small woman so I usually get a Youth shirt sized Large. In addition to them fitting better than adult sizes, I like the special designs they have for the kids shirts. They have a lot of really cool trinkets and tchotchkes. We got some stickers, match boxes, I got a 45 rpm adapter, some post cards. They had some really cool journals I had my eye on but I was already getting up there in things I was buying so I exercised some self restraint and decided to save some stuff for next time if its still there. Don't get me wrong, there's some cool stuff to look at, but it's tiny and not worth going out of your way for (unless you really like Jack White). The gift shop is just three small rooms with a small but completely representative collection of vinyl and CDs released by Third Man. There is also a wide range of other items including t-shirts. The store also serves as a kind of recording museum including a sound recording booth that is totally operational and you can record yourself onto a vinyl record. It's located in an light industrial area near downtown Nashville, but it appeared to be safe. Parking is pretty limited. If you love vinyl records you should visit. read more

Summary: It's not really as much a record store as a tourist trap for fans of Jack White and the label. As a vinyl collector, I had to do a pilgrimage to Third Man since I moved to Nashville. I appreciate the love Jack White has for vinyl and his commitment to keeping the format alive and viable. Still, this "record shop" wasn't much of a record shop as much as a mini-museum to the golden days of vinyl and Third Man Records' inventory. They have Jack White's Grammy awards, a Mold-O-Rama, a recording booth where you can put yourself on a record. New vinyl of Third Man artists. For a collector, it's probably not worth the visit unless you specifically want to pick up Third Man or White Stripes vinyl. As a tourist stop, it's a nice little place to pop in and say you visited while you're in town. Bottom line: It's not for the serious vinyl collector. read more
