The reviews are correct, they tried to scam a bill to my family. They didn't submit to insurance in time so a procedure got a 312 code. Entirely their fault. So TOPA sent a bill for over $800 with threats of sending to debt collection. This is a violation of California Health & Safety Code § 1379, as well as the federal No Surprises Act and probably also California state law AB 72. They're well aware this wasn't legal but they're hoping people get scared and cave without talking it over with insurance. If this happens to you, report to DMHC, CDI, and/or CFPB. read more

These people are scammers. They are coming after me for $250 AFTER I RESOLVED THIS ISSUE A YEAR AGO. Beware. Truly. All these reviews are true; this company has very suspicious billing practices. I received a bill for diagnostic services which are covered 100% by my insurance. Naturally, I went through my insurance claims and did not see anything filed from TOPA for the last few months. When I visited the link provided in the bill for "billing questions," it sent me to a landing page to update my insurance information. To my surprise... They had completely false insurance information for me. This wasn't a regular degular clerical error; it was entirely wrong information! It seemed like someone was too lazy to look up the claims address for my insurance and simply wrote in the name of a military branch followed by a local address. Like, they didn't just miss the target; they hit the neighbor's cat. I don't know how something like this happens. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I'll probably do both while I'm on hold, waiting to 'resolve' this mess.. knowing I am in for months of stress worrying about some debt collector coming after me for this service like that thing from that movie "It Follows". After reading these reviews and seeing how they entered my insurance information, I feel like TOPA is forcing me to pay out of pocket just for peace of mind. The lab is fine, but their billing department are crooks....got bills duplicated had to continuously call back and fight as I kept getting notices saying they would send you a collection agency was on hold got hung up on twice. Finally reached somebody and got it resolved, but the amount of effort was absolutely ridiculous. Received a massive bill in the mail; called to query the situation - was told, "Sorry, we forgot to bill your insurance. Will do that right away. No further action needed from you." Get a new billing company that is not incompetent or dishonest. The billing company has billed me 5 times for the same date of service. The last one said final payment due or to collections I go. My shared amount was originally paid which resulted in a zero balance. Yet they are still double billing. Twice they claim they are appealing to my insurance yet the insurance has no record of these claims. None of the 5 bills to me reflect either my payment or any appeals. This is fraud. read more

They claim they are out-of-network, which is surprising since the doctor who gave the test is in-network. Overcharged my insurance to do a pathology report on a tumor and and they patient balance billed me $673.72 I called them and they said they accepted my insurance and to call them to have it handled. I called my insurance and they said that Topa was actually out of network so their customer support was incorrect. My insurance said they would process with Topa again because they should not have patient balance billed me. Clearly have no regard for the The No Surprise Act nor bleeding money out of cancer patients who have to navigate this already enigmatic system. Like everything in medicine, I have to separate the medical care from the back end insurance company stuff. TOPA turned around a pathology exam and my complicated DNA gene sequencing test to identify which of 14 types of virus were causing a severe respiratory illness. They got the right results back to my doctor ON SUNDAY in less than 24 hours. I think that's outstanding. It's taken the insurance company three phone calls to get on the right page. This is not a review of their services, but of their billing practices. Assuming I've actually used their services (which is still under question), the multiple calls and indecipherable voice messages prompted me to call this morning, which led to a 20 minute wait. When I didn't have an account number (I never received a bill) they asked my name and promptly hung up on me. I called again and they told me their billing office was now closed but I could leave a message. I was transferred, and again the call disconnected. I then researched them on line which resulted in a very shady billing page - where I won 100,000 dollars- uh? In any case, highly suspect. Want to write it off as a scam, but since they control my destiny vis-a-vis my credit score, will call again on Monday. Word of caution - don't give them sensitive information. read more

Be careful with these people! All the sudden, I saw a collection on my credit report. After weeks of follow-up, Apparently, they billed my insurance with the wrong code although even my doctor office knew the correct code. Supposedly, they sent a bill to me but it got returned because of the address. Again supposedly, the doctor's office gave the wrong "city" to them. They didn't call or do anything. They just sent it to the collection and the collection just sent it to the credit report. read more

I called them up and they couldn't explain why it took them so long to bill it. There was so much time lapse that I encountered issues in getting my health insurance to pay. In my mind, I wondered if TOPA purposely held the bill back so that I was forced to pay for the whole service from out-of-pocket, instead of them receiving a lower negotiated price with my health insurance? The billing department is horrible, disgraceful! Impossible to reach them. They don't answer the phone. I was calling them to pay a bill. If you want to pay by phone with a credit card using their automated phone system beware... It won't recognize their own long 16 digit account number. Their account numbers have a ridiculous amount of zeros in them making it difficult to punch in numbers correctly. Hold time is more than 45 minutes and the music is horrible. I asked for a supervisor and held for another 45 minutes then finally got disgusted and hung up. Since their billing service is horrible, I worry about the quality of their lab work. I also tried calling at 4:15PM on Monday. They were closed. Their statement reads open to 5PM. read more

I was very sick with flu symptoms that persisted on and off for over two week. I was at my wits end so went to my doctor. We used TOPA for a bunch of tests and got definitive answers that same day; enabled me to get start getting the correct treatment that same day. This company not only doesn't submit your bill to insurance, but they send you a final notice without a prior bill threatening to send you to collections if you don't pay the full amount. Horrible billing experience with this place!! I inadvertently paid a bill from this place that my insurance also covered and paid too. I called to get a refund, speaking to Pauline who promised my refund soon. No refund, so I made another call. Weeks later, still no refund, so they lied to me. Thankfully, I'd paid it with my credit card, so I disputed the amount with my credit card company and finally got the charge reversed! I am a proctologist who does a lot of surgeries in which I send the specimens for pathology. I have been using TOPA for many years. The pathologists at TOPA are of the highest standards and the staff is professional with fantastic customer service. Anytime a pathology report shows cancer or pre-cancerous changes I get a phone call by the pathologist to discuss the case. Hearing the doctor's view of the pathology helps me to inform the patient. This is a true sign of compassion. I find they do such an amazing job that when I was asked by the Aspen Surgery Center if they should use TOPA for their pathology specimens my answer was a resounding "YES". We are now using TOPA at the Aspen Surgery Center and the results are great. Over the many years I have been using TOPA I have never encountered a patient who was double billed or had an issue with their billing. If I could give TOPA more than 5 stars, I would. TOPA excels as a diagnostic laboratory, and the personal care I received was exceptional when I reached out for specific help with my reports and billing questions. It's a shame that the laboratory even has to deal with obstructive insurance billing practices (billing that has nothing to do with the lab's actual service, and over which TOPA has no control); but, to the extent that they could help me, they did... and went overboard to do so. This lab has a great employee, Paula. I was having a difficult time with their billing company (PSA Billing). PSA is worthless. No answers, no lab contact info, and no phone number for the lab. I had to google TOPA to get the ph number. The rep that answered the phone at TOPA quickly directed me to Paula's desk. She was able to answer all of my questions. Great employee, customer focussed, accurate information. They need to replace the PSA Billing group with a competent customer focussed organization. "BEWARE! Make sure you check your insurance and the procedure code or you may get a massive bill. Don't trust you're doctor or the lab to check that first. My insurance, who generally has covered everything wouldn't cover their procedure code. No one warned me. So I get over a $400 bill that I had to pay. My wife was quite ill with what turned out to be e.coli and her doctor directed her to have some work done and directed her to TOPA. We didn't know at the time that TOPA was not in our network, so we were a little cranky when a bill for $568 showed up a month later with zero contribution from the insurance company. We appealed and the insurance company denied the appeal. So, grudgingly, I paid the bill and sent a note to the TOPA feedback email expressing my displeasure at the bill and the fact that no one bothered to check our insurance status before doing the work. However, to my surprise, I heard back from TOPA and they offered to give me the cash price of $275 if I would withdraw the insurance claim. Which I did and they are cheerfully refunding me the difference.
