Fort Caroline…read moreis significant in the history of Florida and the times of conflict since its discovery by the Spanish and French on the First Coast in the 1500s. Fort Caroline itself is not the largest historical fort you'll ever visit, but it is a fair replica somewhat of the structure, the walls (which were probably stronger and reinforced), and the moat around most of it served to give an idea of what means were used to slow down an adversary to make it more difficult to breach the walls. The history of the battles that took place between the French and the Spaniards was not only for conquest due to claims on the land, but since this was the early part of the Reformation period that began in 1517, it also was a religious war between the Catholics (the Spanish) and Protestants (the French). Now the actual site of the real fort Caroline is unknown at this point, but most historians agree that what exists there now is probably close to the location. This spot certainly provides a great view of the St. John's River from both sides. So strategically for those times, the fort's placement was ideal. This River had originally been given the title of The River of May by the French. As you go down the Hammock Trail to the Fort, you'll find that there are a couple of trails that lead off to other areas as the Hammock Trail has about a mile and a half circle and there are other neat sites to see along the way. If you have the "All Trails" app, you have it made in the shade to track your walk, know where you are, and be sure you won't miss what you want to see! I recommend everyone have this app highly for hiking! Also, make sure you visit the Timucuan Visitor Center! It serves as a museum with interesting artifacts and tells the story of the history before the Spaniards and French arrived, of course, about the history following, and you'll even find the oldest totem in North America on display as well! For a smaller museum, it sure packs a truckload of information! Well I spent a couple of days here collecting photos and video to tell the story of what happened at the Fort in the near future. And for exercise purposes, I'll use this trail Lordwilling many more times in the future! If you desire to visit: Make the visit! Don't think, JUST DO! Recommend: VERY HIGH

So make sure to have your stub and ask about validation. The entrance is really grand and beautiful. It's an older building, but so well-maintained. Thanks to signs, it's easy to find the office you may be looking for. If you still have trouble, there's alway someone at the desk when you enter who can assist you. Once you go up, make sure you take the opportunity to take in the view.

The views of downtown are pretty spectacular. Of course, I say that from a few floors up. But still…read morenot a bad building. The baby grand in lobby is a nice touch even if it is kept locked up. There's a bistro on the 2nd floor which serves up ok food and the Towers coffee shop which makes a nice cuppa joe. The security guards are nice and the view on the outside from the back of the building is quite lovely. The landscaping adds a nice touch and the view of the river is a treat. Sometimes people walk up and down by the river, and sometimes there's an ever so slight breeze. The railings are very open and I almost lost my phone into river when it fell out of my hands, so watch out for that!

The original four lane drawbridge that was built in 1949 is gone, replaced with this large…read morefeatureless concrete monstrosity that was completed in 2009. As part of the project to replace the bridge, US-90 aka Beach Boulevard was widened from four to six lanes and is now a very busy thoroughfare lined with condos, shopping and restaurants all the way across from the beach to the interstate. The old, four-lane drawbridge, which was actually two separate two-lane bridges, operated for 58 years and became outdated. It also created traffic backups when the drawbridge was raised. The new bridge is fixes so that traffic backup is mostly just a memory. 124 feet wide and with a vertical clearance of 65 feet, most ships should have no problem continuing on the Intracoastal to their destinations. Did the Fuller Warren end at Gilmore Street on the west side? Did the Acosta and Fuller Warren end at San Marco Avenue on the south end? Did the Main Street Bridge originally end at Kings Drive on the south side? Did the Matthews Bridge end at Chaseville Road (University Blvd) on the east side of the river? In depth imagery of the development of Jacksonville's road system from 1920 or so would be extremely interesting. Imagery of Jacksonville's development prior to 1920 would be quite interesting too. Since they finished the renovations (and I honestly thought they never would), things are much better. I say renovations, but it's actually an entirely brand new bridge. I still remember the old Fuller Warren which was a draw bridge and I had to cross it every day going back and forth to work. it seemed like it would never fail that just before I was about to cross in the morning on the way to work, some idiot in their little sail boat would be going under making the draw bridge go up. I can't tell you how many times I was late to work because of that. LOL I always thought those people were so inconsiderate to stop all of us trying to get to work. Couldn't they have planned their little leisurely sail at a different time? LOL I digress..... Love the new bridge now that it's completely and I love what they've done with all the new ramps and flyaways (not sure if that's a real term, but it's what I call them) connecting I-10 and I-95 on the westside of the bridge. It did take forever to do it, but now that it's completely, it's great! Also, if you're new to town or just visiting, the view of downtown at night when crossing from the west is just fabulous! I still remember the first time I crossed this bridge like it was yesterday (it was in April of 1997). I was born and raised in a small town and had never seen such a sight. I drove over the bridge from the west at night and looked to my left and saw downtown all lit up.... it was breathtaking. I said to myself right then and there, "I'm moving to this city!" There's nothing fancy or extraordinary about this bridge. It's not uncommon to see people fishing around the area of the bridge. I'm not one who fishes, so I can't say for fact, but it seems like a good place to fish if that's your thing because so many people are here doing it. If you look to the west while crossing the bridge. You can see I-95. There are also houseboats docked by the bridge. Once upon a time ago, I had a friend who lived in one of them. There once was a half sunk boat here from one of our hurricanes or tropical storms that was impossible to miss. It was left that way for years and years and years. I always wondered why the city never did anything about it. Well, someone finally did something about it because the boat is now gone. I have to say that now I miss seeing that half sunk boat. I guess I got use to it without even realizing it. Make sure you do the speed limit crossing this bridge because going southbound, the speed limit drops drastically as soon as the bridge ends, and cops tend to enjoying setting up speed traps here.
