I had driven through Hermann plenty of times but never stopped until April 29, 2026. Now I'm wondering why I waited so long. Right away, this place stands out--vending machines outside stocked with their own brats (available anytime) and a dog-friendly patio. Already a win. Inside, we were greeted by owner Mike Sloan, who took the time to walk us through everything. That level of hospitality sets the tone. The staff was fantastic, and while waiting for our food (which came out quickly), we checked out their in-house products and free samples--impressive doesn't even begin to cover it. Food highlights: Reuben on rye (daily special): incredible "Best of Show Bratwurst": must-order German potato salad: better than what I've had in Baden-Baden Smoked gouda pasta salad + traditional potato salad: both excellent After talking with Mike, it's clear why everything is so good--this is passion-driven craftsmanship. He even competes in Germany and regularly wins top honors. Bottom line: Don't skip this place. Hermann Wurst Haus is the real deal.

It had a great snap and their incredible kraut really made the meal. I also picked up some beef sticks, and a German ring bologna because you only live once. Besides my family-in-law's cooking this was the highlight of our Missouri culinary experience…read more After a 3 hour flight it was a three hour drive to our destination. About 2 hours in we see signs on highway 54 for "Barnyard Smokehouse". Drooling over the signs and starving my wife start calculating by the time we arrive at our destination it'll be too late to eat with family so we follow the signs. There's no offramp, just hang an instant right off the highway onto the dirt road at the barnyard. Used to clearly marked offramps I missed it and had to take a detour. Luckily in Missouri you can make u-turns on the freeway :-D The entire property is the "Central Missouri Meat & Sausage". There's a deli, market, and restaurant called "Barnyard Smokehouse". Beef and pork is locally raised and butchered on site. Walking in the door we're greeted by warm and friendly people telling us to sit wherever. The restaurant is inside the market/deli to the right. Lots of tables. To start we order some fried pickles. They're sliced thin and battered in cornmeal and served with ranch dressing which is one of the food groups in Missouri. I wish the pickles used were more sour but they tasted really good. For dinner I had their smoked brisket with Texas toast, BBQ beans and Mac-n-Cheese. My wife had the same thing but with "bacon, cheddar, and ranch potato salad" and mac-n-cheese. When it came out I was skeptical since the tri-tip came out in paper thin slices but I shouldn't have judged a pile of meat by its looks since it was fantastic. Beef was saturated with smoky goodness and due to the thin cuts it was super tender. On the table was several made in house BBQ sauces. I really enjoyed their spicy one and my wife liked the sweet one. Side dishes were great too. Due to our odd flight times we only had a tiny sandwich on the airplane so we both devoured everything on our plates. While waiting for our food I walked over to the dessert case and perused. Another standard item in Missouri are refrigerated whip creamed based "pies". We ordered the oreo cookie one. It was gut busting rich. Thick slab of dense vanilla custard topped with crushed oreos and whipped cream. Super rich and decadent. We both felt like we were going to burst after our meals but it was a great start to our vacation. When walking around the market after we saw these giant 6 to 7 foot cured meat sticks made from pork. Since we were going to a potluck in a few days we got 4 of them and at the party cut them up into bite sized pieces. These pork sticks are AMAZING. The BBQ flavor was the favorite followed by the jalapeno. They have them in more reasonable sized pieces too that are vacuum sealed. I bought some for myself and some co-workers. If you find yourself driving on Highway 54 through Fulton, MO do yourself a favor and follow the signs to this great place!!

No, literally, they have more than one level to the store. What's going on? Why can't they just stay in that basement place and call it good? Well, this new venue is bigger, and the old owner(s) also owned the Broadway Brewery, and the rumor is they are going to expand that restaurant into the basement place where they old Root Cellar was located. Plus, this new place has much more panache, and since the new downtown farmer's market started on Sundays, this new location hooks them into that whole casbah (or would it be a souk?). Anyhow, there are things in the works. Some of the things in the works: Free wi-fi for the internet deficient. There is a loading dock that they want to turn into a stage for live music acts, and the audience can hunker down in the parking lot and listen al fresco. They've already installed a cooler in the loading dock deck, where they might start stocking beer and wine and such. I told them to install some old speakers and a turntable and an amp, and I would provide a mess of vinyl, and that would attract the neo-retro folks who dig that stuff. Who knows. From the loading dock deck, you can saunter down a few stairs into a long room with a huge wooden bar, end-capped with a deli counter. So the plan is, to have sandwiches and stuff, as well as coffee, tea, etc. Perhaps they will give Uprise a run for their money? I say they should aim for a different consumer niche, since Uprise has pretty much locked-in the hipster crowd, they need to go for the blue collar crowd who appreciate all that local food/music stuff. Who knows? This could usher in a critical mass for the new North Village Arts District. Maybe it will give the "District" a run for their money. The "District" being the semi-mafioso oligarchs who control the downtown area, and who took out the benches from the sidewalks because unseemly folks were sitting in them. I guess they installed them, so they can take them out, but geez, it sounds a little draconian. For all I know the NVA District folks will do the same thing, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Anyhow, here is a good article on their moving, and some nice photos: http://www.columbiamissourian.com/stories/2011/06/20/root-cellar-moves-north-village-arts-district/ In addition, they have a CSA, where you can get a box of local veggies and fruits and stuff for like $30 or so. They give you a little print out with info on where everything came from, and some recipes that include some of the foods. You pay by the week, but to guarantee a box, you should sign up. The new owners are real nice, and if you are looking for suggestions on what is good or interesting, they are very helpful.
