Thanks to Thrive Again and specifically Dr. Amitrani, I have now successfully been able to use a tampon, tolerate a full pelvic exam and pap smear, and engage in penetrative intercourse several times with no pain or issues whatsoever. I saw Dr. Nava Szwergold at Thrive Again for 4 or 5 sessions mainly for help with pelvic floor exercise. She was excellent at this and was helpful. However, I told her I'd had four back surgeries, and she said she thought the nerves were guarding after the trauma of the surgeries. She wanted to bring the nerves back to life, so to speak. To help with this, she suggested I do sciatic nerve glides once or twice a day. I did them once a day for a while at first, which was all right, them thought I'd do them twice as she had said. After doing them twice one day, there was a sharp pain, and I knew instantly that I'd pulled the sciatic bundle of nerves. My toes were numb and it was hard to walk. My prominent physical therapist, a specialist in the back and recommended by my neurosurgeon, asked why in the world she'd given me sciatic nerve glides. He said he never recommended them--someone would have to ask him before he'd give them. I told Dr. Szwergold what had happened. At one point she said something about "gentle sciatic nerve glides." Was she being ironic? They were anything but gentle at least for me, and she knew this. During the last almost six weeks, I've taken muscle relaxers and Gabapentin. Also, I've seen my internist who gave me methylpredisone; then my physical pain specialist for an injection of corticosteroids in the back; my physical therapist for more physical therapy; and now my physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor for 6-8 sessions of acupuncture. All to diminish the pain of sciatica. I am finally feeling better, but still limiting how long I walk (20 minutes). I do recommend Thrive Again, but with the caution that if you should go to Dr. Szwergold, do not let her work on your back or assign you sciatic nerve glides. First, do no harm. Here harm was done. Pros: * Therapist was outstanding - really felt safe and relaxed, overall very pleased with the experience. In terms of bedside manner, it's among the best care-giver experiences I've had. Cons: * Diagnosis - details on this was unclear, didn't feel like they spelled out the causes, exercises, and progress milestones very well (e.g. you should be feeling better in a week, if not lets do something different). * Results - It took a lot longer than was necessary to start seeing improvement. I moved on to another practice and was improving in days, not weeks. * Responsiveness - Phone call replies were poor. I recommend just sending email and setting calendar items to follow up. They also weren't very forthcoming on details about insurance coverage, amount, time, etc. I didn't have clarity on how much would get covered or how much it would cost. Other: * Recommend arriving early if you're not familiar with the area as I struggled to find the garage. It's not super clear on my nav program (this is not the fault of the practice, just something to keep in mind) * "Monument" parking is the garage name. Tell them it's for "ThriveAgain Physical Therapy", you'll park it yourself and give them your keys. read more

I didn't read the other reviews, I'm beyond grateful to this place. Everyone from Jessica the owner to Lauren my physical therapist were encouraging and empathetic from the first day I fearfully called about how disheartened I became after a hysterectomy. My back ached chronically, my bladder pinched on urination, I didn't have full movement in my core, and once I fearfully tried intimacy, it had gone so terribly wrong I was diagnosed with anxiety from the fear of juggling everything. Jessica pointed me to Lauren, it was a lot of pelvic work and at first I didn't think she could help me. Jessica Probst is the best pelvic physical therapist this side of the Mississippi (and probably the other side, too)! I came with a serious set of problems resulting from four surgeries. I had seen numerous other PTs. Finally, my doctor recommended Jessica. She is deeply knowledgeable and has a doctorate herself, something most PTs do not have. She knows numerous techniques, including osteopathic and chiropractic ones. She is an outside the box thinker, which is important for pelvic problems since they are not often clear cut. Working with Nava via telemedicine at ThriveAgain PT has been a life-saver! Towards the end of my pregnancy, I started experiencing round-ligament pain that made it difficult to walk or do basic activities. Through online PT, Nava helped me see vast improvement in the condition so that I can now walk about 1/2 mile and get around the house without pain. I never wrote a review when I "graduated" from physical therapy, but I was thinking about how grateful I am for the help Jessica gave me, and I wanted to write one now. I spent over 5 years trying to get help for what was misdiagnosed as a bunch of things and was finally diagnosed as pelvic floor dysfunction. I was convinced that every doctor and PT would either make it worse or focus on red herrings. Then I was referred to Jessica. She was empathetic, intuitive, holistic, and knowledgeable. Plus she's just a lovely person. She was able to see the big picture and figure out what my body needed. At a certain point, she recommended another colleague (who is no longer there) for craniosacral therapy. And....I felt like I got a new lease on life. Before I saw her, I was convinced I'd never be able to exercise again, and now I am able to exercise without worrying, and to go through my day without focusing on pain. I've put off writing this review for a while because there is so much I want to say about how wonderful Jessica and Tieya are, and I could never find the time to write as much as was warranted about how knowledgeable, helpful, and attentive they both are. I have been going to ThriveAgain for over four years and have had help with my back, shoulder, pelvic floor, gut, and so much more. They provided invaluable support during my difficult pregnancy and postpartum period as well. They are both incredibly sensitive and aware of the role of the nervous system and anxiety in how the body handles stress and injuries. They provide hands-on treatment, not just exercises and stretching like so many physical therapists do. I appreciate that they listen to my concerns and proceed only when I am ready. They are sensitive and in tune with how I am feeling. I give them the highest recommendation and especially encourage pregnant women and new moms to visit them. I'm immensely grateful for ThriveAgain PT. Having struggled with severe back pain throughout my 20's, I've tried dozens of practitioners, with varying degrees of success. The care I've received from Tieya has had some of the most profound impacts that I've experienced in almost a decade -- and I feel that I'm headed in a much better direction than any prior approach. Pain. Free. Intercourse. Achievement unlocked! Following a major abdominal surgery in 2012, I was experiencing excruciating pain when attempting to have sex with my husband. This was utterly new and worrisome to me, as I had never had issues prior to my surgery. After repeat requests to my gynecologist if there was any way to remedy my unsatisfying situation, I was FINALLY referred to a women's health specialist who promptly sent me to see Jess, owner and founder of Thrive Again PT. Yes, this is a topic most people find difficult to discuss, but Jess made me feel comfortable and was always sensitive to my mental and emotional situation during our weekly sessions. My treatment involved external and internal work, as well as homework for me to do in between my appointments with her. In addition to treating my pelvic floors issues which included much scar tissue, immobile fascias, and a sort of mental reflex to clench all the muscles down there making the pain even more intense, Jess treated other chronic ailments. I have a bad knee with no cartilage, arthritis, and bone spurs, and a mass of scar tissue on my lower leg from a horseback riding injury, all which contribute to some back, neck, and shoulder pain. This is just a small cross section of her skillset. I found her to be professional and thorough while still being empathetic. She really wants her clients to feel their very best. She was always prompt and her staff is very accommodating and responsive. I highly recommend anyone experiencing pelvic floor pain seek out Jess. No one should have to have painful intercourse or feel awkward discussing it with a medical professional. If you are looking for highly personalized treatment and a skilled physical therapist, Thrive Again is for you. This is no typical PT provider. Never are you given a task and a timer and left to your own devices. Outstanding. 5 Stars. In brief, ThriveAgain PT gets 5 stars for the following reasons (see below for details): 1. Jessica is a miracle worker! She is incredibly skilled, experienced and knowledgeable. She's helped me with several chronic and acute issues. I am continually impressed by the breadth and depth of her skill set and knowledge. She is also incredibly kind and personable. 2. Awesome support staff. Catalina at the front desk is super sweet too and is responsive, efficient, friendly and warm. 3. Pleasant space. The office is spacious and the therapy room has big windows and is nicely decorated. Jessica also ensures I'm comfortable with temperature too, which is nice as from I'm from the West Coast and y'all have cold weather here in DC. ;) 4. Convenient. Office is located right off Farragut West Metro Stop. Two nice eateries downstairs as well if you need a snack. 5. Prompt and timely. I've seen health providers that have routinely run late, which can be frustrating. Jessica is always prompt. Okay now for more details. My physician friend recommended Jessica to me several months ago as I was having worsening musculoskeletal pain that stemmed from an injury several years ago. I'd seen several other providers over the years but nothing seemed to help. I was feeling hopeless and down that my pain was not only untreatable but seemed to be getting worse by the day. During my first session with Jessica, I was so impressed by her knowledge of the human body and her ability to so quickly assess my situation and the intricate interplay between several symptoms I was experiencing. After that first session, I already felt dramatically better, and most importantly Jessica had given me hope. I've seen her as often as I'm able since that first appointment, and my time with her has been nothing short of life-altering. She had helped me with chronic, long-standing issues as well as acute injuries, and most recently she has helped me significantly following an abdominal surgery. I am so impressed by her versatility. Not only does she help with ailments/injuries, but she also helps me optimize my system to avoid future injuries and to just feel better in my body in general. Woohoo! Jessica also empowers me as a patient, explaining things as we go along and giving me exercises to do at home. A nice touch, she emails me my home exercises, which is nice to have on hand in my email if I need to remind myself of the exercises. All in all, I give ThriveAgain PT my highest recommendation. Jessica and Catalina are fantastic and it is always a joy to see them. I've never worked with Aileen personally but I've spoken with her and found her very personable and warm. I am so thankful for having found Tieya at ThriveAgain PT! I did a thorough search on pelvic floor PTs in the DC area and after reading reviews, I decided to go with ThriveAgain and I'm thrilled that I did. I called the main information line and was referred to Tieya, one of two pelvic floor PTs there (Jessica is the other, who's also fantastic!). I was referred to information on their website about what the assessment would entail, and they were really helpful with answering questions about billing and insurance. To say that I was nervous for my first session/evaluation would be an understatement. I didn't know what to expect, if I would be in pain, etc. Tieya was incredible at calming down my nerves. She took a comprehensive history, I disclosed trauma and she gave me details about the evaluation as we went through it. I learned a lot during that first session and one year later, the learning hasn't stopped and I'm leaps and bounds forward with progress. Here's what I admire about Tieya's skills as a pelvic floor PT: 1. The sessions are a collaborative effort. I didn't start any internal pelvic floor work until two months after seeing Tieya, but she assured me there was plenty of external work and strengthening to do. I never felt pressured or rushed and this time was great to get to know Tieya and feel comfortable during our sessions. Even when we did start internal pelvic floor work, she explained things thoroughly and was adept at knowing how much to do during that session based on my feedback for pain/discomfort. She checks in to make sure I'm tolerating the treatment and is very astute with reading her clients. 2. Tieya gives a lot of great information and focuses on client education. I've learned a lot about my own body and pelvic floor in general. This has helped demystify things to me and made things much clearer about what was/is going on in my body. 3. She implements what she learns in professional development opportunities right away. During one session, she tried biofeedback on me to show how diaphragmatic breathing helps relax my pelvic floor. That helped a lot since you can't always feel (or obviously see!) your muscles relax. She implements new techniques and ideas right away into the treatment plan. 4. Tieya encourages along a way, since pelvic floor PT can be emotionally (as well as physically) challenging. I've checked in with Tieya a few times during the year we've worked together about whether I'm making good progress, or when I hit a roadblock with my homework and need help. She's always there to give advice and listen, and does well with giving a home exercise program too. PT definitely requires both work at home and during the session. 5. The overall environment of the office is warm and welcoming. When you're going through therapy, the last thing you need is to feel like a number and not a person. I've always felt welcome and supported, by even staff whom I don't work with, they're incredibly kind. The therapy suites are are also very well set-up, warm and inviting, and as expected, very clean. It's not anywhere near a sterile medical clinic environment! It's been a year of working with Tieya and I would more than happily and strongly recommend clients looking for pelvic floor PT (and orthopedic PT!) to check out ThriveAgain and Tieya. After a very serious car accident that shattered my knee cap 17 years ago, I have spent a lot of time seeing dr.'s and physical therapists to keep my knee working. After starting with Jess, I have made progress I never imagined possible. She has also done amazing things to keep me training without interruption despite injuries that had normally kept me out for months. Unlike many physical therapists who just want you good enough, she wants you back to better than you were before. Jess has resolved my ongoing ankle issues, helped with my hand and wrist issues that had been misdiagnosed as purely carpal tunnel syndrome and done wonders with my lower back pain from a car accident. I've felt better from all three problems in just a few sessions. And unlike some other physical therapists I've seen, she does great hands on work, and then gives you a bit of homework to reinforce what she's fixed. So much better than having a PT watch you do exercises while treating other people. Jessica is a wizard o.o After one one-hour session my injury (years old) had already shown considerable improvement. The entire office is very warm, friendly, helpful, and trusting. She therapy itself was one-on-one and engaging. Jessica was able to tell me when and what my muscles were feeling consistently enough that I'm preeeetty sure she has a somewhat bizarre PT super power of some kind. I would highly recommend Jessica as a therapist! I've had Aileen treat me once. We did dry needling! I didn't find it as effective as Jessica's methods; however, there was--again--tangible improvement from the session. Aileen was incredibly nice and personable too! I am nothing but impressed with Martial Arts and Sports Physical Therapy. From the incredible help that Jessie at the front desk provides both over the phone and in person, to the unparalleled therapy that Jessica (owner) and Aileen provide to each of their clients, I was sold on this clinic. I was able to spend an entire day recently observing both of these clinicians and the way they treat and interact with their clients (new and old), and I can attest that I have never seen or heard of anyone coming away from physical therapy feeling that much improvement, but also in a head-to-head competition with their therapists as to who is more excited about their improvement. They are motivators to their core and encourage their clients through tough exercises to see near-immediate relief and improvement. These are the kinds of therapists that clients return to after they've moved out of the state and are back in the area for a short time. The relationships they have developed are reminiscent of the type of relationship you would have with your favorite hairstylist, your next door neighbor, or your family doctor who's seen you grow through all of your life's stages. There is an undeniable familiarity and trust with each client's unique concerns as seen over time and a true commitment to and joy gained from healing each person. The immense variety of techniques that Jessica has mastered through consistent continuing education is remarkable, and the stability and dry needling skills that Aileen produces are a great complement to Jessica's already vast repertoire of tools. Jess is the best! I've been seeing her for pregnancy-related issues and she has been able to help me feel a lot better in a relatively short period of time.
