It was a cold Saturday morning in February and I was cutting it close to get to spin class. I parked and sprinted the two blocks to the studio and the frigid air hit my exposed calves below my 3/4 length workout pants like a brick. Didn't think anything about it until I felt a tug in my right calf within the first two minutes of spin class. I let it heal for several weeks but it never quite felt right. For months, I had a nagging tightness. Not pain, but lingering soreness. Stay with me here. I re-tore my ACL on my left knee a few years ago and opted not to have surgery again. For the most part, It's fine because I "retired" from the sport that caused the injury, but it's occasionally wobbly and my knee randomly pops out of place. So I decided to do what I should have done years ago and go to physical therapy to work on strengthening the muscles around the knee. Also saw their business cards at Pacers Running and the employee also had good feedback. I made an appointment at Rose and was assigned to Laura based on my symptoms and her specialties. The DuPont office is bright, clean and modern. It sounds weird to comment about the aesthetics, but it really contributes to the experience and my comfort level. Laura is amazing--she takes the time to listen to where I'm having issues, especially during our initial session. Highly recommend! While I thought only my knee needed work, I mentioned where I continued to have calf tightness and she took a look. She explained where the muscles around an injury can lock up and if not loosened up, stay tight even when the original strain heals. During sessions, she works on those tightened muscles with some kind of sculpting tool, does dry needling to release some of the knotted, triggered areas, and then we do a series of exercises to build up strength and stability. I need to be better about doing the exercises at home to help speed along my recovery, but from the office visits alone, my problem areas are improving and I'm so glad I finally made that first appointment to get started. I had a herniated disc/sciatica and was completely immobilized; Kat totally got me back on my feet and as good as new in just a few months. I am extremely pleased with my experience with Rose's. I came here for PT for my right knee following surgery. I've heard stories about how crucial the quality of PT is following knee surgery so I did my due diligence in researching and finding the best PT. I was set up with PT Mary Burke. Mary was phenomenal and provides top notch service. I really liked that Mary pushed me and set a game plan. Mary battled my scar tissue like it was the 12th round of a boxing match. tl;dr - GO HERE! Highly recommended. Okay, so my first PT experience ever was awful and I assumed that all PT's were awful. You do not tell a girl that has Loubotins and Stuart Wietzman's in her closet to stop wearing heels. Yes, I already know that heels are bad for me - but I'm not going to stop (no comparisons to smokers please, bad PT already tried that and I debated about taking up smoking just to spite him). The therapists at Rose are not like that. I've seen Claire, Misty, Holly, Kendall, Sydney, and others - and I never felt judgement on some of my questionable life choices that brought me to PT. And I feel like I've put the therapists at Rose through the gamut on the temper tantrums that my legs and hips throw when I start up training for a triathlon or half marathon. The last issue that the lovely ladies at Rose worked on was heel pain that wasn't plantar fasciitis but had the same level of pain in other parts. Misty and Kendall were able to get the swelling down with ART and Graston Technique so I could start walking in the mornings without pain. Also I know what ART and Graston is because they were patient enough to explain it to me. As well as why heels are bad for people with tight calves like me - BUT also what stretches I can do to loosen the calves and keep the awful searing pain away in the mornings. The other thing that I love about this clinic is the fact that my time is valued and the whole appointment is spent with a physical therapist. I don't have to spend the first 30 minutes doing exercises with an assistant. While I realize that some people don't do their homework - but I would rather spend 30 minutes at work (or looking at shoes) then having to redo exercises that I do at home. I also don't want to feel like I'm begging for more time with the therapist because my 45 minute appointment had two thirds of the appointment spent on exercises. The appointments at Rose are set for 60 minutes - that's right SIXTY MINUTES - for you to spend time with your therapist and only your therapist. You might do some exercises with a therapist - watching you to make sure you do the exercises right - but the therapist with you and it seems like there's a purpose for it and not a stall tactic, And the best part - THEY TAKE INSURANCE!!! The only other place I got service almost as good as Rose, I had to pay for everything out of pocket. So to recap - Go here. They have staff that cares, listens to patients, and work together. I worked with Cody Kenly for three months and he was excellent. An x-ray and doctor's visit did not show any visible injury to my knee, but despite that I was unable to do workouts that required bending the knee, running or jumping without pain. I imagine it's easier to treat a patient who has a clear issue, but Cody was able to see that my knee was not tracking properly. He devised a plan for me, and it was evident that he put time and effort into thinking about my knee issue outside of our scheduled appointments. I appreciated that he went above and beyond. Cody came up with creative solutions and challenged me throughout our time together. After working with Cody, I'm back in the gym doing squats, jumping, and even running on an incline with no problem. Thank you, Cody! So as soon as I walked in, I knew i was in good hands. I loved the feel of the environment. First, Claire and I went into one of the private offices to chat and get ideas about what needed to be worked on. Then we went into the common room to put those ideas into action. Claire is so personable and she could hold a conversation while also walking me through the exercises (what i was doing right and what needed to be corrected). What I loved most was that she told me the end goal. She realized my limitations and knew what I would be able to do now and then told me what I'd be able to do later if i kept at it. Claire is amazing! I have really struggled with lower back pain for years with little to no relief. I've tried other physical therapists, acupuncture, personal trainers. I've even met with a back surgeon and had an MRI done. None of this ever fixed me or gave me hope. I found Claire online and really didn't have a lot of hope - I was really just hoping for a good massage and a small window of relief. 10 weeks later, I'm a different person. She approached my issue with new information and training. She knows her stuff and if anyone can fix you, it is Claire. There are good therapy clinics and then there are better clinics. This physical therapy clinic is not just great, it is fantastic. They don't shuffle patients through like you are cattle, you are treated one on one by therapists who have special certifications and practice in the most cutting edge theories. My mother was in town with me, and hurt her foot, they fit her in the next day, and with just one treatment her pain was almost completely abolished! I've had some difficulties in the past finding a PT who wouldn't immediately make a snap judgment about what was wrong and stubbornly keep prescribing rehabilitation for injuries I didn't have. Or who only seemed to know strengthening exercises that were really designed to get the elderly back on their feet rather than get you ready for anything particularly athletic. Rose PT is totally different. Methodical, curious, friendly and perfectly willing to challenge you just a little bit. Laura and Kristen in particular. This place is the real deal and totally changed my perception about how effective physical therapy can be. My doctor initially prescribed six weeks of PT, but after only three sessions with Danielle, my years-long back and shoulder pain dissipated. She is sharp, attentive, creative and so good at what she does. On more than one occasion, she's identified and treated underlying problems I didn't even realize I had. Another great thing about Rose: the therapists collaborate to take care of their patients. For example, during my last visit, Danielle worked on my neck and back, and then brought in a TMJ expert to help deal with my jaw, which I now realize was causing a lot of my pain elsewhere. I got little relief from my PR regimen and little in the way of consistency of treatment. It's a busy practice, but I don't see where that should impact my--quite expensive-treatment. I was left for weeks without follow-up after what felt like an abrupt cessation of two weeks of twice weekly appointments and told when an appointment opens I'd be seen & that only after complaining about the ineffectiveness of treatment to that point and the sense I had of an arbitrary ending of PT. I'm rambling, but only because it was so expensive, disappointing and humiliating that I'm too emotional to write more rationally. Not sure what made my experience so much different from the dozens of folk who rave about this place, but I have my theories... read more

I've had the misfortune of needing PT for various ailments at least 5-6 times in the DC area, and each time it was much of the same. You meet with a PT on visit one for an evaluation and plan. Then, on subsequent visits, you are mostly with a PT tech going through a list of exercises, and the PT visits with you for about 10 minutes while they are juggling several other patients. This approach is generally fine.... if you have a cookie cutter injury that really just needs you to go through routine rehab exercises. My experiences varied, but they were all okayish. Rose is much different from these experiences, and I would argue much superior. First of all you are with a PT the whole time, so that's a big difference to work with someone with a doctorate/advanced degree v. a tech (not that techs aren't great, they often are). Second, my PT at Rose, Laura R., did not just put me on a plan and go from there. She was constantly responding to my changing symptoms by re-evaluating and modifying our approach. Essentially, it felt like the level of care I had only experienced on the first PT visits before with every visit. Also, Laura's knowledge base was extremely impressive, again she didn't rely on the basic strengthening and stretching (although of course those basics were always incorporated) but she tried techniques such as mirror visual feedback for chronic pain issues and other desensitization techniques. Moreover, Laura, and I believe a lot of the other Rose PTs, are experts in dry needling, which really helped me a lot. Many PT places say they do needling, but often the PTs just don't have time to do it given the situation I referenced above. Finally, the whole Rose PT experience as to scheduling and cancellation is much better than other places I have been. It all could be done via email (with near immediate responses), and the front desk staff were happy to schedule you far out in advance to ensure your appointment times are convenient. In short, while I've always had adequate experiences with PT, I really recommend Rose over the others I've tried, especially if your injury/pain isn't particularly straightforward. read more

Five stars for Rose and for Dhruvy! I came to Rose in fall 2016 when I was struggling to return to running after a stress fracture in two places on my leg. Dhruvy got to the root of the problem and helped me understand where the pain and tightness was coming from. She takes the time to explain things to you and really helps you be your own advocate and an active participant in your recovery. Rose does not shuffle you between therapists or leave you to your own devices to do exercises with a tech--you are one-on-one with your therapist for the full hour. I truly believe this individualized, holistic approach contributes to Rose's success and to my success as a patient. I still see Dhruvy for "maintenance" PT/needling as I've returned to running and look forward to our sessions. Good for the body and the soul :) The office is beautiful and welcoming and boutique-y. It does not feel clinical at all which I appreciate! The business side of the house is great as well--the ladies at the front desk are lovely and professional. Rose's team is amazing - from their front office staff to their wonderful therapists...even down to the resident cat who strolls around the office! Every one of their staff is extremely well-trained and they seem to have a therapist who has a strong background in any sport. As a runner, I wanted to work with someone who understand common running injuries, would be able to tell me the root of the problem, and give me a prescribed list of exercises to help heal my injury and prevent future injuries. Holli Finneren worked with me - patiently listened to me, didn't roll her eyes when I said that I still wanted to do a race in a few weeks despite this injury, and worked some insane magic with her fingers! She also did dry needling. Now before you cringe at dry needling - trust me, I have been through my fair share of torture sessions. Before Rose, I had been to the top-rated PT clinics in the DC area and been dry needled for a previous hamstring injury. It was painful and my injury didn't improve. My first session at Rose (about 4 years ago), I had dry needling done...effective, not as painful as other therapists, and within 3 weeks I was injury-free! I would highly recommend Rose to any athlete. They also don't pressure you to "see me for the next 6 months and I'll only spend 20 min on you each time", which I experienced with other clinics. They spend the full 50 minutes with you, give you exercises you can do on your own, and their aim is to get you rolling healthily on your timeline! read more

Cody was my PT at Rose Physical Therapy in late 2019, and everything about my experience was fantastic. The facility is immaculate, the staff are helpful, and Cody is professional, dedicated to helping his clients, and fun to work with. For several months I'd been experiencing knee pain during exercise that worsened to the point where I was uncomfortable while walking or just sitting at my desk. Cody helped identify and eliminate the issue(s) causing my knee pain through a combination of soft tissue work; strengthening, stretching and balance exercises; and detailed homework assignments. Now I'm regularly enjoying jogging, yoga, and other activities that were previously causing me pain. I'm more active, and I'm really happy about it! Another great aspect of my physical therapy experience with Cody and Rose PT was how educational and empowering it was. I had been having "mystery" shoulder pain for about a year. By "mystery," I mean I couldn't even explain how and where it was hurting. My first visit with Claire was about 6 weeks ago, and we spent just about the entire hour pin pointing what exactly was hurting. She was honest and told me that it was odd, but she'd try to help me. She showed me some changes that I needed to make to my work space, and also an exercise to do. She told me to E-Mail her in a few days, and we'd go from there. Over the next few days, I tried to take better notes, and E-Mailed her an update. She wrote back and asked me to try a different exercise, and low and behold - that fixed it! I just had my first visit today with Rachel, and I already feel relieved. I'm training for my first half marathon and started to have some foot pain after walking around London for a week in flats. Claire is a rarity in the medical profession. She listens. Yes, with her ears and everything. She listened when I told her what I was feeling, not only did she listen, she took that information, and then, gasp, formulated OTHER questions based on my info!! I know right!? I've had plantar fasciitis for about 2 years now, some weeks are ok, some weeks I walk like a man 3 times my age. Yes, and man 126 years old. I was going to the podiatrist every few weeks or so but all he really offered was "it'll just fix itself over time" or a cortisone shot, which seemed to me was treating symptoms rather than the problem. So that was where I was when a friend recommended Claire. I was disheartened that my pf would ever be better. Claire listened and came up with a course of action that was as effective as it was simple. It essentially involved massaging the knots out of my heels along with a stretching regimen. Simple as it sounds, it has been very effective over the past 2 months and I am back running again after over a year off. I'd recommend Claire unequivocally for anything that ails ya. She'll listen and really do her best to come up with a way to make you feel better. It really does seem like her passion. If you are looking for personalized service with the best and most compassionate physical therapists in DC, look no further! I was lucky enough to get Claire, the owner, as my PT, and I just cannot say enough wonderful things about her and her office. Claire is the only person who actually figured out what my injury was, when 3 other orthopedists were stumped. Not only is the office conveniently located and lovely, but you will experience zero bureaucracy - unlike those cookie-cutter facilities -- and totally personalized care. No giant group rooms where you have to look at all the other patients being treated and you get shuffled around from exercise to exercise with assistants; the PTs here spend a full 45 minutes with you in a private room. This is true one-on-one care, and unlike any of the dozens of other PT offices I've been to. They even have snacks and coffee, a beautiful new state-of-the-art facility with a shower, and huge windows with lots of light. Everyone is so nice - going to PT became my favorite part of my week! You have to try dry needling if you haven't. I have a connective tissue disorder and have had chronic pain for 20 years - it was the only type of treatment that gave me pain relief and many of the PTs there specialize in it. Claire's mom, who is adorable, does all the billing and she is super responsive. When I needed my medical records, they sent them to me right away. I just "graduated" from PT a couple weeks ago. 7 months ago I had emergency back surgery to repair what my surgeons described as herniation in the 95th percentile for severity; apparently my disc didn't so much rupture as it exploded into my spinal cord. Over the last 5 1/2 months I have worked with Olga, first at least twice a week, and later tapering. I went from being unable use my right leg or walk properly (not to mention the large amount of pain) to being able to function and maintain on my own. Olga pays incredible attention to what her patients are feeling and how their lives are affected by the pain and discomfort they're feeling. She is particularly adept at formulating treatment and exercise plans that work for each individual. For example, my surgery happened just 8 1/2 weeks after giving birth, which meant that not only was I recovering from major surgery and regaining strength, but I was also taking care of a newborn. Olga created a program for me that worked with my life situation, and even let me bring my newborn to our sessions (and incorporated him into exercises or held him while I did them). Also, Rose PT therapists, unlike most other PT offices in DC, work directly with their patients rather than handing them off to technicians. Every hour long session I had at Rose was with Olga - the entire time. Over the 5 1/2 months that I spent at Rose we got to know each other very well; I owe my recovery and ability to continue to heal on my own to Olga.
