Waste of money. We thought it would be old timey and cute but it's not. It's a trap with the whole Ford story, the place wreaks like old oil and saffron. Like real BAD, and not a single window in the hole premise was openable expect the room one (not even the shared bathroom windows were openable). The restaurant is connected to the house and well it's damaging the wood with the smell. This place has a LOT of potential but with current management definitely not coming back. Took us a couple mins to find a person to welcome us in (we had reservations) this person seemed miserable, turns out it's the owners daughter and that says a lot about a place. Don't waste time and money and stay in Marquette or a motel or airbnb. read more

Had dinner with friends there while we are in the area staying at the lighthouse. I was very surprised at our dinner at the big bay inn. The white fish was amazing. Continuing the venture into the most northern regions of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Today's lunch Is at Thunder Bay Inn. Purchased and renovated in 1940 by Henry Ford. The inn is a pleasant drive from Marquette and as I am told quite popular with the snowmobiles in winter. They have a good selection of menu items. One thing that is local sandwich is a Cudighi, spicy Italian sausage patty with mozzarella, shrooms, veggies and marinara on chibatta bread. Which I ordered and it was quite good. We ordered the fried pickles as an appetizer. It was quite good with a creamy horseradish sauce. Orders were placed and we patiently waited. My Cudighi came with real honest to goodness hand cut and breaded onion rings. The rabbit of the group got a Michigan cherry salad and the third person got the pulled pork. There was silence for several minutes while we were eating. Must be good, is really good. The crowd varied from a group of motorcycle enthusiasts, 20 somethings with bicycles on roof racks to grandparents with grandchildren. My wife and I needed a change of scenery and decided to take a short trip through the Upper Peninsula. I reviewed the Thunder Bay Inn on the internet and found it intriguing due to my long career with Ford Motor Company. We were close to Marquette and I called on a whim. They actually had room 201 available ( Henry Ford's Room) so we decided to drive up and spend the evening. We had a wonderful time (even though the Inn is in Historical Renovation with the new owners) at the inn due to the exceptional hospitality of New Owners (Mark and Sue Bevins). Sue met us, checked us in, and provided us a mini tour of the main floor, our room, and the restaurant at the Inn. We were eating dinner in the restaurant when the whole place cleared out to the parking lot. We wondered what was happening when a person came back in and told us to join them to see a double rainbow - very unusual and spectacular. Evening was quiet and we slept well. Accommodations are time stamped to the era. No big screen TV so do not expect HG TV. We woke up and met Mark on the way downstairs to make coffee and greeted us only to ask us to sit at the bar and spill their dreams (Retired but their Last quarter Dreams according to Sue) for this very special place. We went for a tour which Mark which lasted over an hour and were totally captivated by their dreams and commitment to keep it historical forever. We told Mark we were on our way to Lake of the Clouds. He gave us a backroads map and followed Ford Road (Marked with Red paint and an arrow) which is a very cool off the grid way to get there. Our F150 handled the trip with ease and we saw some pretty amazing scenery along the way. Personal thanks to Mark for a memorable drive. We cannot wait to go back annually and touch base with them and see the progress with what they have in store for this Historical Inn. Totally made our trip! Carl & Laurie read more

After a beautiful drive and many stops we made it to our destination at the Thunder Bay inn. It is such an amazing place with tons of history. We began our evening having dinner in the restaurant and ended it with drinks on the 2nd story balcony just watching the darkness and listening to what nature had to say. The rooms a are spacious and do have private bathrooms that have been added. This is a must stay location. I would recommend it and would return. read more

I got married at the beach down the road from this inn, and had a great experience coordinating with the owners in conjunction with that. We had our rehearsal dinner and stayed at the inn the evening before the wedding as well, and it was lovely. The owners and staff were wonderful; helping us coordinates pizza and drinks for the rehearsal, and were really there for us through every step of planning. We got some beautiful photos within and in front of the inn too. What a special memory; we will certainly be back! read more

Food is so so. I was disappointed but I will be back because of the history. My BLT was good, and the lemon berry marscapone cake was excellent. My cod was soggy. Southwest chicken soup was sooo salty. My suggestion? Shrink the menu & Learn to make a few things expertly, then expand from there. read more

We called the Inn to ask about food and found out it is typically closed for food service on Monday and Tuesday in the winter. However, after talking to the owner he said he would open for us since we were a group of 8 snowmobilers. . He said the would serve us pizza and salad. We arrived at noon and sure enough they opened up for us and made us 3 fabulous pizzas. They even had the bar open which was a bonus. The owners were very friendly and gracious. I think I've stayed her like 4 times now. It started about 2 years ago when we were visiting Northern Michigan University and we needed a hotel overnight. Everyplace in town was booked except one room, and that was going for $300+. I didn't know anything about Thunder Bay but it had high ratings, availability, and a room was $80!! We took a chance because of the Yelp ratings, and I knew you guys wouldn't steer me wrong. Now this place is a permanent stop when we are in the Marquette area. This place is just different. It's not anything like your normal hotel, and I think that's part of the attraction. The rooms are small and most don't have showers. You use the community showers. The beds are small and most of them squeak or sag a little to the side. There's no televisions in the rooms and not a lot of lighting. I guess you could almost say it's kinda a bed and breakfast on a grander scale. There's a lot of history with this place. From the murder movie thing to Henry Ford and making cars. This place is chuck full of antiques and friendly people with lots of stories. I guess that's the charm that brings me back. It's just not the same old Hotel blah blah blah. If you're up here, you gotta stay at least once. But if you're gonna be all upset and butt hurt because they lock up and night and you can't watch your favorite AGT reruns while in bed, then don't come here, and save these nice folks your crappy review. We wanted to order some pizza and burgers for takeout. We were greeted by a nice lady who sat us down at the bar. We asked the small guy in red shirt if we could order takeout and he forcefully told us no takeout sit down only. The nice lady asked us our order and she said if it was pizza she could maybe do it. The small red shirt guy returned and yelled at the lady for even considering it. We were then pushed out the door by small red shirt guy and left. Overall, bad customer service. We spent three nights at the height of fall colors. The Inn is outstanding! History of the area as related to Henry Ford and from another time, the "Anatomy of a Murder" book and movie are highlighted in pictures and other artifacts. A short walk from the Inn is the Lumberjack Bar, the scene of the crime. At the Inn, watch the movie and watch the DVD about the making of the movie. Short hikes close to the hotel through the northern woods are marked and easy to follow. A nearby beach is within walking distance. A couple of waterfalls are in short driving distance and easy-moderate level of hiking. The Inn is clean, filled with antiques and historic artifacts, and offers a variety of room choices in the online registration. Mark and Sue Bevins are fantastic hosts that are available to answer all questions! The last point to be made is that the restaurant at the Inn offers a large variety of apps, salads, entrees, sandwiches and specials. We enjoyed the Friday fish fry, the smoked pulled pork, and smoked brisket. We regret missing the prime rib special. Next time! read more

What a great place! The bar staff was super friendly and prompt. The food was very tasty. The onion rings were recommended by a local and they did not disappoint. Best onion rings I ever had. Very light and perfect with a cold beer. The inn has two of the cutest rabbits that hang out on the front lawn. They look domestic bit we are told are wild. Poor service. Received half a cup of clam chowder broth with 3 Potatoes, no clams. Salad was brown. Waitress ju st dropped off Food with back turned and never asked how things were. Main Dish was cold but good. She acted like it was my fault. Even Charged for soup. Very disappointed. read more

What a disaster. Where to start? We went there for dinner. I get that the UP barely uses air conditioning but it was so hot in the restaurant. You would think that all the ceiling fans would be on, nope. When the waitress brought us our drinks she lost her balance and all the drinks landed on us. Now we didn't care about getting drenched because honestly accidents happen. That poor girl was nearly in tears. The manager/owner came over. He patted my uncle on the shoulders. He sat down to chat with us. He indicated that he was going to look at the camera to see what happened. Seriously it was an accident that poor waitress. He did give us our drinks free. We were all drinking pop at that point my Aunt and I each ordered a shot. Now I know this is a stretch but you would think a place that sells T-shirts would maybe offer us a shirt since my uncle got hit with most of the pop, his shirt and shorts were soaked. Instead we ate our dinner wet and sticky. Speaking of dinner.. I understand everyone is short staffed and that things happen. I ordered a well done steak, I got a hockey puck, that was 1/8 of an inch thick,that I could barley cut into. They took it back and got me a new one which took another 25 minutes. By the time we got it everyone else had finished eating. I ate what I could of it but it wasn't a good steak. The dessert however was great.I give it one star because they did give us free drinks and dessert. They also took the steak off the check. I feel sorry for the waitstaff. You will get something you don't expect here: Great service, good food, and tasty drinks. You might think that the UP is a waste land of fine dinning. Here you may be correct, but the food is solid made by people who actually care. It's warm in the winter with a wood fire roaring and cool in the summer with the fans running and all the windows open. If you get a chance to hang out here I recommend it. I very much enjoyed this restaurant! First because of the connection to "Anatomy of a Murder", which is described on the menu and the walls in the back. Also, the food was terrific. i had a steak, cooked just as i ordered, enough to take some home with me. also mugs and hats with the restaurant name are sold. Went on the advice of the owner of the Big Bay Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast where we staying. He said they have prime rib special tonight because they prep it with a rub days ahead. Try the onion rings , they're hand dipped just before frying, he said. So my wife and I did. We both had the prime rib and ordered some onion rings for an appetizer. Our waitress was excellent, attentive and informative without being a distraction. My wife ordered a daiquiri and it was very good, even consistency and tasty. When she ask for a second one our waitress gave her an estimated time because they were really busy which we appreciated even though her drink came pretty quickly. The onion rings were yummy. Crispy and came with a horseradish sauce that was mild but tasty. The prime rib was the best I've ever had, cooked precisely, temperature throughout was consistent and the flavor was delicious. It was so tender you could basically pull it apart with your fork. It came with a baked potato that was very good. The atmosphere is a combination of sports bar and historical items from the movie "anatomy of a murder" which was filmed in the inn. Nice mix of local and visitors such as I but very friendly. Again, the chef and our waitress did a great job. Would go back again for sure. Prices were very reasonable, prime rib dinner only $18.99. read more

Stayed here for one night in February for a snowmobile trip and stayed for a night last week for a Harley trip. Love this place. Last week we had the Ford Room and it was awesome...lots of space and a king size bed!! Restaurant was very good also. History of the area makes it a great place to stay too.
