Mike & Mike are very nice, friendly & patient in explaining their food, ingredients & how they make it. They know their stuff! 1st: I Do Not recommend the Pad Thai. Have had it at the Troy Farmer's Market & at the Student Union & for all their effort in making it, with 10 ingredients including mustard greens & bok choy, there is zero flavor. (Tried Chicken & tofu orders) The pad thai sauce needs some umami, fish sauce, tamarind? I'm not sure. Pad Thai is not supposed to be spicy, so I am confused as to everyone ordering it, & being asked a spice level. Maybe the spic covers up the non-sauce that the noodles are tossed in? I even trekked up to the student union to pick up lunch one day, and asked for extra Tamarind sauce. I got a dollop of brown sauce on top, that tasted like extra salty. Hoisin sauce. And then some more further down in the bowl. Such a disappointment, I couldn't eat all that salt, threw it out. Should I ask for "extra Thai flavor" next time? Really don't know. **Pad Thai is not a Spicy dish friends.** 2nd: Definitely go for: A Rice Bowl with -the string beans. Crispy with a kick of spice -the beets at the Farmer's Market. Never thought I would finish off beets, but this will convert you. I crave this! Too bad they don't have it at the RPI Student Union during the week. -green curry chicken is not bad. Spice comes on a little bit later. -The Mango Lassi is $4.(average since coffee & battenkill milk costs about the same at the Mkt.) A nice option to have, Mike said that it's made with rose water. Needs a bit more cardamom. -Had a nice to-go cold peanut noodle chicken noodle bowl from the RPI Student Union. They're now on a new remodeled floor at the Union, the menu looks smaller. Maybe it will take some time to build it back up, or they may not have the room for extras. -always fun seeing their homemade ice cream flavors according to the holiday. Very creative & fun chefs. They are the best! coconut sticky rice is a must-try if you like sweet. Pad thai is my favorite. It is not just some simple fried rice noodles. You need a lot of ingredients in proper portion to make it tastes that good. They usually get sold out within an hour for lunch in RPI union. Curry and stir fries are fresh made everyday. I heard their ice cream is good too. Whenever you see a long line in RPI union or at the Troy farmer's market and smell the special spice, you know they are there.. Mike loves cooking. I love their food so much and the value can't be beat! If you're at Troy Farmer's Market you've gotta get a giant plate of this incredibly flavorful food (curry, stir fried veggies, pork larb, beets, mango, fried rice, it's all so good!) for a bargain. I hate to do it, but I feel the need to balance things out with all the positive reviews on here. Worst Thai Tea, I have ever had. Ever. It tasted like a medicine I once had as a child. One of those medicines that wasn't pretty in color or flavored for my benefit. It was ever worse because I took a pretty big sip from my cup right at the stand and didn't want to be rude or show my displeasure so I just gulped it down, while wearing my "ooh that was yummy" face. Chicken Curry. Oh my. I've had better chicken curry from a supermarket freezer. I hate saying that, because there were a lot of ingredients in there and I'm guessing it took some effort to make, it was just bad. I get the feeling it was close to something that could have been good, it just failed. The chicken and the entire dish, just came off as soggy and limp. Way too much yogurt! The sauce almost had the texture of ricotta. I like ricotta, but that's not what I'm looking for when I eat curry. The guys who ran the stand were into it, fast, and friendly. It was also super cheap(I think 7/8 dollars for the curry), so I didn't feel too wasteful giving it to my dogs. A star for that, but there's no way I would call this a 4 star place. I want to like it, so I'll give it another go at a later date and update my review if my opinion has changed. read more

I discovered Thunder Mountain Curry at the Troy Farmer's Market. I'm so glad I did. Their food is incredibly fresh. And you can taste all of the fresh herbs and spices they use in every dish. I can taste (and see) the curry leaves, the mustard seeds, the cilantro, the Chiles etc. Other then Karavelli in Latham, this is the only Indian food I've eaten in this area where the food isn't a soupy, creamy pool of bland mush. All of their dishes have a nice spice level to them and some are extra spicy which I love. They aren't afraid to use the proper spice and heat level. They make delicious crispy Pakora. I've had several different vegetarian dishes with cauliflower or spinach or chick peas or cabbage and they were so delicious on their own that I didn't miss the meat and extra condiments were not needed. However- their spicy mint chutney blew me away. It's super spicy, tangy, herbaceous etc. and could just eat it on its own because that's how delicious and addictive it is. I always order extra and slather it on everything because I like it that much! And, I found out this past Saturday while ordering food at the Farmer's Market that they serve lunch Mon-Fri on the RPI campus and the area where they are located is open to the public. Thunder Mountain Curry is an absolute diamond in the rough that is RPI's campus. It is pretty much the only place to get quality food without having to venture into town, and I would highly recommend it to anyone. They also have a stand at the farmer's market every Saturday where they have a very different menu-- if you're an RPI student and you haven't been, you are missing out big-time. Also worth mentioning that they give you a TON of food for your money --$6.50 at lunch will usually end up being most of my dinner as well. I get pakoras from them very frequently and they are pretty much the best I've ever had-- most Indian restaurants in America make pakoras in huge batches and then leave them under a heater, where they get chewy after a while. At TMC you can watch them make your batch in the fryer and they are perfect, although a little heavier than other pakoras I've had. Their sticky rice is also excellent, as is the chicken. Every once in a while they make dal and paneer and I always jump on it when they do because both dishes are awesome! Mike is a CIA-trained chef who has traveled up and down Southeast Asia, and it really comes through in his cooking. TMC is a great way to finish off a day at the incredible Troy Farmer's Market, and definitely the best option for food on RPI's campus. Ice cream every Friday! read more

TMC has gone through some changes in the past year since moving from the second to the first floor of the RPI Union. I am very sad to see the veggie curry and sweet and sticky rice go. There are less vegan/vegetarian options with the less variety, which definitely made me less inclined to eat there. However, this summer, the TMC Buddha Bowl was an excellent addition to the menu. I have to stop myself from getting it for lunch every day. It's exactly what I'm looking for: lots of fresh greens, delicious vegetables, both chickpeas and tofu for protein, and a flavorful dressing. It's a great value for what you get and still isn't too filling. I can't express how much I love the buddha bowl and I really hope they keep it on the menu permanently!! read more

Hands-down, the best pad Thai I've ever had. It must've been obvious when I was standing in line in the student union that it was my first time there because Mike came out and asked if I wanted to come to the front and see everything. After showing me what was available that day, I asked him what was the best and he said for sure the pad Thai. By the time I went out and put money in the meter out front, a delicious steaming dish of rice noodles and a bunch of veggies was waiting for me. Mike & Mike are awesome...and so is the food! Huge portion for under $8. The sampler has rice, chicken, and a few veggie items included. Oh, also, pakora or dumplings. The pad thai is weaker on the spice than they might imply. A 3 wasn't even remotely spicy. A 5 had some spice to it. I think a 7 or 8 is likely closer to what I'd like. Most other places with a spice scale seem to ramp it up at a lower number. The good news is that they have a super spicy cilantro sauce to kick up the heat if it is too mild as served. Absolute garbage. The large portion of red curry curry chicken couldn't save this dish as the chicken seemed like it had been frozen or boiled and the curry lacked everything about Asian cuisine; with a poor choice of sauce with no distinguishable spices in the dish. Did wonders on my stomach. The owner, I presume, was very nice. Usually I give a place a second chance, but the complete lack of understanding of flavor will keep me away in this case. They claim authenticity... I have been a huge fan of Thai curries since my childhood and that dish was about as americanized as it gets in lacking spices. read more

Got the sampler platter at the RPI Student Union. Aside from the pakora, every single thing in the sampler was terrible. The Tikka Masala was.... i don't even know. It tasted as though someone had been given an ingredient list, but had devised an entirely different way to prepare. Have had better renditions of this at chinese food buffets at grocery stores. After two bites of the remaining dishes in the sampler I simply threw it away and went back to class. An infuriating waste of 8 dollars. read more

I found Thunder Mountain Curry at the Troy Farmer's Market a few years ago, and their made to order pad thai made me an instant fan! Just watching the pad thai being prepared is reason to go - indeed, there's usually a crowd of people watching the 'show' as something like 30 ingredients are tossed in the giant wok, cooked over a modified turkey fryer. There's usually a line, but the food is worth the wait. At the winter market, they swap out pad thai for dosa, which are like foot long 'crepes' filled various curries. It's an amazing deal for $8. I work in downtown Troy, so I've also run up to their home base in RPI's MacNeil Room to bring lunch back to work. I love the pork vindaloo, thai red chicken curry, and especially the butternut squash and 'five flavored beets', but it's really hard not to get pad thai! Oh, and I must mention the mango lassi, my go-to market breakfast! read more

Go see these guys in pepper pants at the Troy Market. The $8 pad Thai is a spectacle to watch as it's made right on the street. It also has the right amount of kick, as they ask you for a number between 1 and 10 on how spicy you want it. It will easily feed 2 or 3 a healthy lunch size portion. I also love the buffet choices where you get a bit of everything of the day for a couple bucks. Well worth the wait. read more

This place is run in the McNeil room at RPI by two guys named Mike. These guys have a quality product and make the customers feel like family. I always get a Pad Thai, and have been going here for a couple years while finishing my degree. You can also find them at the farmers markets on the weekend. read more

"This is the best food I've ever had at a wedding... actually, this might be the best food I've had ever." That's what a friend said of TMC's cooking at my outdoor wedding last year. We offered our guests two options, American (cheese burgers and various sides--which TMC cooked perfectly), and SE Asian: coconut prawn and chicken, pakoras, and lettuce wraps to start, pad thai as a main course. When we put the menu together TMC provided with us with lots options (which were super-tunable to special dietary needs), at a variety of prices, and let us decide what we wanted. They also coached me on all kind of details (like liquor licenses!) that I had completely neglected. Because the wedding was basically in the woods, Mike and Mike came for a site-visit to figure out what they would need to do in order to get set up, and on the day itself they executed flawlessly--the timing of courses was right on, the people they brought in to help serve were great, and the food was amazing. They are great people and a pleasure to work with, and the food was very affordable for such an all-around high-quality product. Can't praise them enough. read more

The dosa which I buy every Saturday is quite something, as good as each dish they put into it, the beets especially. It may be the best dish I've ever tasted. There's one bad review here, not due to the restaurant by the difference in taste between the cooking and this diner. Some folks don;t like some foods with certain seasonings or sauces, though eating frozen dinner chicken curry may not help tastes develop. The padh pursued like manna from heaven at RPI is not my favorite dish of them all because I like it sweeter, likely inauthentic taste on my part for having eaten inauthentic Thai food elsewhere. read more
