They never had any of this information updated on their website on this matter, or even let me know about this ahead of time.. If you want miss information, then come here to thundering paws.. that is quite unprofessional and unfortunate. just be aware, most of their good reviews are from their actual volunteers or friends of the owner, yikes. read more

Two weekends ago my family and I were at PetSmart to buy dog food. Our little girl loves to look at the kittens and cats and one of them reached out to us and put his paw on the glass when we were looking at him. I fell in love with him. The following Monday, my husband called and spoke with a woman about adopting him. She asked him about our other pets (2 elderly dogs, 1 3yo cat, and a 19 yo snake) and when she learned that our cat is both indoors and outdoors she told him that we probably weren't good candidates for adoption. She said she lived in our area and that there are coyotes in the area, and they would not be comfortable adopting a cat out who might go outside. When my husband told me this news I called her the following day (Tuesday). I wanted to explain that while we have heard reports of coyotes in the neighborhoods in the hills near where we live, we are in a densely populated area right on the lake and have never even heard, much less seen, a coyote in 14 years in this house. Furthermore, our cat was born outside and spent her life outside until we rescued her. She wanted to go outside constantly. Despite that, we kept her in until she was grown, then accompanied her outside for awhile, then trained her to come back inside to the sound of a fork tapping on a food can. She returned my call that evening, but I was in a meeting. She did not answer when I called her back. I called her again the following day, and thenI went to the TP website. I went through all of the areas on the website and saw nothing stating that cats would not be adopted out if they were not strictly indoor cats. I filled out online application. I gave very detailed information about our current pets, deceased pets, children and household. Wednesday evening the woman called at about 8:45 pm. I had a lengthy conversation with her, in which I explained the above in detail. She hadn't seen the application yet. She asked me questions about every animal I've ever had, my experience with cats, my intentions for this cat, who is our vet, who takes care of our animals when we are out of town, who would take care of them if something happened to us, etc...She asked me about my current cat's temperament, and told me that the cat I was interested in was an "aggressive player", as if to dissuade me from my interest in him. I felt that that only made him a better match for our young, fiesty feline who would be his companion. I also invited her to come to our home to meet our other animals, and to preview the environment. I assured her that we would be happy for him to be an indoor cat only, if he was content with that as well. She told me she'd call me the following day regarding the next step. She didn't call on Thursday or Friday. Nor did I receive any email response to my application. By Saturday, I was irritated. TP says to contact the sanctuary if you don't receive a response in a few days. I called and left a message. Then my daughters and I went to Petsmart to see the cat we were hoping to bring home. There were two TP folks standing outside the "caterie". I got their attention and asked to speak to the woman with whom I'd had the interview. She was one of the two standing there. I asked if my daughters and I could take turns going in and visiting our potential new family member. She said we could all go in together. We spent about 20 minutes playing with the kitten we wanted and his two sisters. Ours snuggled into my daughter's lap. I asked if the cats were rotated out and got sent back to the sanctuary after a time. She said they did not...once at Petsmart they stayed. Our little fellow had been there 3 weeks, in a small enclosure with multiple cats. She asked me all of the same questions we'd been over, and that I'd answered on the application. She told me our application was still under review. I asked when we might have an answer, and she indicated Monday was likely. Yesterday I waited anxiously to hear. We were in day 7 of the process. At lunchtime I called the sanctuary, and left another message, despite the fact that my message Saturday to check on the status was never returned. Then I sent an email inquiry. Then I called my vet to see if she'd had a call from TP to check our references, and she said she hadn't heard from them at all. So we waited the rest of the day. I'd like to point out that on the sanctuary's voicemail, they say that their facility is full and cannot accept any other cats at this time. So I thought our chances were good, since they have many animals in need of homes. Last night I received an email stating that their group and my family's "lifestyle" are not comaptible and directed us toward other agencies. It was clear by her mistaken assertions that she wasn't even closely listening to me in conversation. So our cat is still there. We are heartbroken, and her mind was made up from the beginning. Sorry but why are the majority of the "real" adopter/customer reviews buried and hidden below the biased reviews? Go look at the other local rescue groups Yelp pages and you won't find other rescue groups and volunteers posting in defense of an individual who was commented on in a previous negative post. Seems like these post are defending the Executive Director more than anything else.... My gf adopted a cat recently from this group. When the cat was delivered to her she was given some basic paperwork and something that resembled medical record, I use the term "record" loosely. I adopted a dog last year from a small group here in Austin so i wasn't expecting a fancy printout or anything like that but seriously most of the header information was blacked out...so being curious we held it up to the light and to our surprise we found out that the cat was actually under an individual's name and not Thundering Paws. At this point we were wondering if she adopted a real rescue cat. We wanted to help animals rescued from the streets not a cat whose owner could have possibly made a hefty donation to some group in order to get rid of their pet! My GF was troubled that she may have been mislead at this point. So when we were out this weekend we dropped by Petsmart and inquired about the origin of the cat and the makeshift medical records. The woman we spoke with explained that the cat my GF adopted was a rescue cat however the individual fosters are responsible for all the medical care, food, etc for the cats they foster. When we heard this we asked if they at least get reimbursed for some of the cost and to our disgust the answer was NOT AT THIS TIME!!! I than asked how many of these cats are in foster homes and the answer was "most". So it seemed that all the expenses for animals being adopted out are eaten by volunteers yet all the revenue is being pocketed by the so called sanctuary when the bulk of those animals weren't even present. Can any of the previous posters who gave 5 star reviews or who spoke to the character of the Executive Director explain to me how its ethical that the people whose cats are being adopted (and probably bring in the bulk of the revenue for the organization) are not receiving any financial reimbursement while all the revenue goes into the pocket of the director or towards the sanctuary cats that aren't even at the events in the numbers that the others are? I am very curious to know if whoever is running this group actually draws a paycheck at this point. I am sorry but to me this seems wrong on so many levels. Having your volunteers pay for the expenses of animals that you collect all the revenue from is disturbing and a total manipulation of good hearted people's desire to help out animals! I will never drop another dime into this groups donation jar knowing that the group of hard working and dedicated volunteers will most likely never see any of the donations in the form of reimbursement, food, etc. What I will do next time we are at petsmart and this group of volunteers are out spending their weekends trying to find animals good homes i will ask each of them personally what THEY need in the way of food etc. I suggest everyone else do the same. I am a former volunteer with Thundering Paws. I have known the director for over 20 years. She is one of the most dedicated, loving, people I know. I have watched her take in and care for cats that would have been euthanized by any other facility. My puppy Tater-pi was a rescue dog whom would not be here without the diligence and love Thundering Paws showed in taking him in and getting him appropriate care. I highly recommend TP. read more

As a supporter, donor and friend of this rescue, I can attest to the good works and of the lives saved because of the advocacy of Thundering Paws. In particular their TNR program is staffed by stellar volunteers who spend countless hours working to humanely reduce the number of free roaming community cats in their area. Kittens and social cats are adopted into homes through their adoption program. An excellent organization led by strong advocates making a difference for animals in the Central Texas area. Perhaps T-Paws isn't the Luxury Resort for rescued animals that some would envision, but only because its director, Anne--whom I have known for 28 years now--lives very simply and prefers to spend the barely adequate funding she's managed to secure for rescue cats (and a few dogs) over the decades on the animals themselves: food, litter, vet care. Stuff like that. Recently she spent several thousand dollars of her own money on a new roof for the sancturary--from a bequest that was left to her, personally. But make no mistake: Anne's a player in the real world--she quite purposefully chose to pursue a lifetime of rescuing cats and doing whatever was needed to keep those rescued animals afloat and thriving, and, for many, in brand-new homes as adoptees. Like any non-profit in America, T-Paws has gone through really hard times to stay solvent--but stay afloat and solvent it has done, and continues to do. And Anne proactively seeks out opportunities to continue to rescue cats--as this case, in point: only weeks ago, she and her partner Scott rescued over 40 cats who were trapped in a trailer in Hays County--they were found starved and dehydrated, some barely alive. She found homes and accommodations for ALL of them. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of people who work in animal rescue in Central Texas who would say all of these things about ThunderingPaws. The staff and volunteers know the personalities of the pets & help you choose the one (or ones in my case!) I have volunteered at Thundering Paws for several years. The dedication of the director to the welfare of her animals is inspiring. She and her team do wonders with limited resources and their love and compassion for the animals is what made me decide I wanted to participate in their mission. With so many animals in need, no organization is perfect and anyone can be overwhelmed by the magnitude of what needs to be done. But even in the short time I've been there, the number of animals that have been rescued, nurtured, and placed in loving homes is amazing for such a small organization. They sponsor adoption events almost every weekend to help find permanent loving homes for their animals. This group is VERY active and the motivation for all of them is love and determination to help all the animals have a chance for a safe, happy life. They can't save them all, but they do all they can. If you want to make a difference, consider becoming a Thundering Paws volunteer. It may be the most rewarding thing you ever do. read more

I was very surprised and disappointed with the policies and practices of Thundering Paws. Let me start by saying I am a huge animal lover and advocate. I have had pets since the time I was born and they have all been well loved and well cared for. I have adopted pets from rescues similar to this one in Houston. This company it not up front on its policies on declawing of cats and asks misleading questions in this regard on its 5 page application. When confronted on why this policy (no declawing on any cats - no thoughts of declawing - you are evil and bad if you do) is not made known to the applicant, it was told to me "that people lie about not declawing their cat" which I find hypocritical since they are not upfront about this policy themselves! My application for adoption of a cat that I fell in love with was declined because I put down "undecided" in the answer about declawing and I also own a cat (s) that were previously declawed before I owned them. I have a cat that I adopted in Houston 13 years ago that still has his claws and I agreed not to have him declawed and I have honored that but this fact was ignored. They didn't even give me the kindness, consideration or courtesy of a phone call to tell me I was declined - they sent me a snotty and judgmental email! When I asked them about this, they responded they could not be concerned with the feelings of children!! They are concerned about cats but not about the people who want to adopt them or the children! Matthew 23:24 - you strain out a gnat but swallow a camel! AND what is their concern really of cats that have to spend MONTHS in a cage instead of going home to a loving family that can honor an agreement not to have them declawed!!! Crazy!!
