Bad experience with a speed boat rental. Poor customer service when one of their boats broke down on the lake.
We rented a 22' Rinker speed boat. When they gave us the boat, there was no inspection, or instruction on how to use it. Luckily we were familiar with boats and figured it out. We were also told there were no tie down straps for the rear of the boat (the straps that tie the rear of the boat to the boat trailer). We took pictures of any damage we could find (there was not much).
Once the boat was in the water, we figured out how to operate it. The boat seemed to be working correctly. We drove 20 miles down the canyon to our house boat. Later that day, the boat started having some electrical issues. Gauges malfunctioned (tachometer, speedometer, depth gauge) and the perfect pass program kept restarting. We were out of cell phone range and did not want to drive back. We dealt with the issues for two days. On the third day of issues, we drove back to get fuel and ice in Bullfrog. In between bullfrog and halls crossing, the boat died. The boat would not restart. We did some basic trouble shooting and called the rental company.
The rental company transferred us to their "boat guy." He had us go through the basic trouble shooting again. Still on a dead boat in the middle of the lake, we had to demand that the sent a tow for us. They called the tow boat company for us. We still had to give our own credit card information and they "would reimburse us." We were towed to the boat ramp. About an hour later 2 guys from the rental company came to get the boat. They also went through the basic trouble shooting and could not get it running correctly. The rental company did not have any other boats, did not try to find us a boat, and had no solution for us to get back to our house boat. They offered that we could ride with them back to Ticaboo, wait for a mechanic to try and fix the boat, and potentially be back on the water at an unknown time.
We inquired about a boat rental in the marina, but they were out of boats. With the day getting short and no way to contact our houseboat, we had the tow company drive us back to the house boat.
Several days later, we stopped at the resort to settle up on our speed boat rental. We understand that stuff happens and there will be issues. We thought that the resort would be very understanding and would give us a deal to compensate for our troubles. When they asked what we wanted (a much lower price for the boat rental) they immediately claimed that we had damaged a seat on the boat. They said that we had torn the seat and there was over $300 in damage. One of the seats had been previously repaired and a patch was falling off. When we retrieved the pictures that we took, the manager did not want to look at them. He insisted that we returned the boat dirty and damaged. His employees had wet shoes and got in the boat from the dirt parking lot, tracking mud into the boat. I couldn't believe that the manager was accusatory, rather than apologetic.
We eventually worked out a deal, and I still feel like we paid too much. I would not rent from Ticaboo resort unless it was the last option. read more
