Boulder Mountain Lodge, along with onsite restaurant Hell's Backbone Grill, has been one of my happiest places for over two decades. And as of January 2025, the owners of the Grill have acquired the Lodge, so it's all one entity now. The Lodge has very comfortable rooms, a pond with an amazing variety of resident and migratory birds, a second-floor Great Room and balcony overlooking the pond, a hot tub, and ample grounds for children and pets to run. It's an easy drive up to Capitol Reef National Park for the day. Burr Trail Scenic Backway, starting right around the corner, is 67 miles of some of the most beautiful terrain you'll ever see. Don't miss the little slot canyon 11.5 miles down the trail! Last summer I took a pillow and some reading material and set up on two flat rocks near the back end of the slot canyon. It's nature's most gorgeous reading room ever! The Grill features vegetables and salads from their farm, local pastured beef and bison, and some of the best desserts ever. My two favorite orders are the Dinner Jenchilada with calabacitas (squash) and the Chocolate Chile Cream Pot. But they are both rich, so I have them on different days. Big secret -- it tends to be quieter in mid-summer! People think it's going to be hot in July, like other Utah areas like Zion, so they plan to come later. But the average July high is just 88, with an overnight low of 60, so the wonderful hiking trails nearby are pleasant for morning and evening hikes pretty much every day. read more

We only stay here so we can eat at Hell's Backbone Grill. The Lodge boasts an incredible location, but is showing its age. The rooms are ok, but not reflective of the price. As long as Hell's Backbone Grill is next door, we'll continue to visit. read more

A nice place. But not $250 up nice. Restaurant is nice but also charging double of what they should. If I wanted San Francisco prices I would have gone there. You can find something just as nice in the area for a lot less. Try Escalante or Torrey. read more

Lovely place to stay, centrally located to many amazing sites in UT. Escalante is a gem! The only complaint I have is that the wifi is terrible: I was planning on working one day here and couldn't function fully because of connection issues. Otherwise, the staff is lovely and the area is gorgeous: Just don't plan on staying here for a workcation! :) UPDATE: The terrible internet is not typical. I spoke to Susan at reception and she told me it had been extremely slow all week, likely because of fiber optic installation that is going on. So disregard my comment re the wifi! read more

This is an incredible find--it's serene, scenic and exactly what you need as an antidote to urban living. We were only able to get one night but would have loved to have stayed longer. We learned that the Lodge fills up very quickly, so we'll be booking our room well in advance next time. Hell's Backbone Grill -- well what can I say? The mojitos were fabulous and I was able to order a vegan meal that was absolutely delicious. We'll definitely be back for the hot tub! read more

My wife and I celebrated our 37th anniversary at the Boulder Mountain Lodge. What a great place to stay. Great hiking, great scenery, great driving destinations and great accommodations. I booked a room at the Boulder Mountain Lodge for three nights through National Parks Reservations. I later discovered that this organization has no link to the government and it also charged me over $63.00 just for making the reservation on line and another $25.00 for cancelling the reservation. The cost to cancel was clearly stated, but the charge for booking on line was not. I have never been charged to book a hotel or other type of room on line. I recommend never booking through National Park Reservations. they are a big trip off. read more

Wow! Boulder Mountain Lodge is a real find. Spacious rooms with front porches, a fabulous farm to table restaurant called Hells Backbone Grill, and a two-story common room with a glorious view over the pond bird sanctuary. They even have a lovely retreat with a huge hot tub. The grounds are lovely and spacious and include a dog run , fire pit and lovely gardens. We were on our way from Grand Canyon North rim to Moab and spent the night and are so glad we did! read more

We've been to many places and this was just one of those places that you need to go to to fully experience. One minute your driving on what looks to be the moon , the next your coming up to this high mountain lodge oasis Totally totally impressed with this place , Both of our meals in our short stay rank as my top 5 meals of all time . I feel like my wife and I are fairly tough food critics ( lived in Hawaii / worked in the resteraunt business / live in San Francisco) and this place was worth basing an entire trip around. Kid friendly , there's a huge lawn area with a make shift volleyball / badmitten court , fire pit area , tons of kid type adventure stuff, you might need some imagination You'll need to be fairly self sustained and into the outdoors as the playground , there's absolutley nothing around this area which in my opinion is one of the biggest draws, kinda like going back in time . Bring bikes , both road and Mtn , there's sweet roads and trails. The only small negaitive is that it's a little spendy , the room rates are moderate , expect to spend more on food than the lodge ................The restaurant is worth every penny read more

Really pleasant, comfortable lodge in Boulder. Boulder itself would get 5 stars too. A really cute little town in the middle of nowhere - not very big though, so plan ahead and stock up on provisions and/or cash (not much in the way of ATMs). BML is a real retreat. Beds are comfortable, nice grounds to walk around. Not just a place to crash, but a destination to enjoy. read more

We made a point of coming back to stay here a second time - not sure why it underwhelms a few reviewers. We love the location and the peaceful, green, friendly environment. Our room this time was on the second floor - it felt like being in a tree house, really. I think the trees are Catalpa? Big leaves, big pods hanging down and all around the balcony. The room was large, clean and nicely kept. There are dogs (and children) all about - I saw dogs running free (no idea if they are theoretically not suppose to). The place was established on Buddhist principles and the wetlands/birds area is wonderful. Also the 3 feral cats they watch out for. It's a mistake to avoid the on-site grill - Hell's Backbone - excellent, excellent food. The neighboring Burr Trail grill is pretty good but Hell's Backbone is better. HBB is casual but Burr Trail is like hanging out in a surfer bar. read more

Beautiful Place! Room was huge. They certainly didn't skimp on making it a relaxing luxurious feeling place. Free use of robes and aveda products. Loved the fact there is an expert available in the common room to give advice on local hikes etc. Resturant on premise is also a star act. Beautiful place! Sweet lodge rooms scattered about in several cabin (but modern) type buildings. Huge pond w geese and ducks...Hell's Backbone Grill has very good food and is nicely decorated. Plenty of open, green space to walk, play frisbee, etc. Staff friendly and welcoming but not intrusive. We stayed an extra night just because it was such a delightful place. We loved the restaurant, so decided to come back and explore the area for a weekend. They are sort of dog friendly, but while they have huge fields of grass, you can't let your dog off to chase a ball. They said something lame, like someone might possibly have an objection. other than that, it was a charming place out in the middle of nowhere. Fantastic place to stay! We've tried for so many years to crash here, but they are always booked solid! This year I got on their waiting list for Thanksgiving weekend, and they called after getting a cancellation. We splurged on the Luxury King Suite. What a pad! So spacious, warm and inviting. The bathroom was gorgeous and gigantic; the half bath "powder room" was really nice to have too (we had two kids with us, and one bathroom is...difficult). The kitchen was surprisingly well stocked with tools and gadgets, including baking pans, a blender (Hills and Hollows has organic frozen fruit for smoothies, FYI!), organic good coffee, and more. If I wanted to nitpick, I'd say that the knives are cheap (but they work in a pinch) and a crockpot would be an amazing addition. But really, we were able to bake scones and cookies, and make some very good meals there. The rest of your meals should be planned for the local restaurants! There's also a good communal outdoor kitchen and grill by the hot tub. Towels are fantastically soft and fluffy, and if you're into watching tv, the screens are large (one in the living room, one in the bedroom), and dvds are available at the front desk. I loved the cushy robes. The grounds are beautiful, it's a relaxing place to stay with friendly people all around, and you're minutes from glorious hikes off the Burr Trail. Highly recommend. We are recharged and ready to face a busy holiday season post getaway. I was sad to leave, though! I wish I could move in. Haha. read more

We felt so lucky to be in such a comfortable retreat in what must have been a harsh area for those who settled it. Every amenity is provided here and we had a hard time leaving. Watching the birds on the pond was the highlight for me and I enjoyed the nearby hot tub. Make sure you book at the adjacent restaurant; its wonderful. read more

My whole family just stayed here for 8 days, and I would go back in a minute. The location is beautiful, the staff is friendly, and the rooms are very comfortable. The refrigerators are big enough to hold a good amount of food, and the on-site restaurant (Hell's Backbone Grill) serves delicious breakfasts and dinners. There are all sorts of hikes that start out close to the lodge. Just a few examples of the great service-- free DVDs to rent, free boardgames to rent, free internet, and free first-aid supplies if you happen to bang yourself up in the wilderness. Terrific surprise stay on our tour of the 5 big national parks in Utah! Family of 5 stayed in a deluxe 2 queen room that had full kitchen and living area ... very clean, nicely appointed. The restaurant was also great (Hell's Backbone Grill). This town may seem out of the way and it's truly in "middle of nowhere" but the scenic byway 12 road it sits on is worth the drive ... spectacular views driving from Bryce Canyon to Capitol Reef parks, that drive alone was worth the trip, but definitely do it in daytime when you can appreciate the stunning scenery ... highly recommend the drive on 12 and a stay at the Boulder Mountain Lodge! read more

This older lodge has been fixed up to create a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere. The flowers and pond-side landscaping add interest to the experience. This is an oasis in the Utah highlands. The Aveda bath supplies, choice of Tazo teas top off the room experience. read more

Its the best place for a 100 miles, or perhaps the only place I would recommend for 50 miles. The hotel, Boulder Mountain Lodge, was very pleasant, comfortable and near some of the most beautiful places in the world! We would have happily stayed more than 2 nights had time permitted. Pleasant visit but not worth $350/night. Difficult to know what they are charging for since the location is not central to either Capital Reef or Bryce NP. Just a normal country setting with some buildings and a restaurant. Stayed in the Deluxe King - a one-storey duplex that shares a common wall with an identical unit. When we drove up I was definitely unimpressed with the building and surroundings, it seem very bare and there was no landscaping to give you privacy from the road on two sides. Upon opening the door there was an odd odor to the unit (weird cleaning supplies?) but the rooms were clean and well furnished. The living room has a nice view of an open grassy area where other visitors and their dogs roam (again, no privacy) and you can see cattle in the farm across the street. The adjoining patio had a large table and comfortable chairs for 6 people. The kitchen is tiny, has most dishes and cooking utensils needed - but is not well designed (opening the dishwasher door blocks the cabinet that holds the dishes). Nice overhead lighting in all of the rooms. The bedroom was enormous: large dresser, comfortable recliner, TV in this room and the living room. Bed was large but too soft and made sleeping difficult. Beautiful bathroom, well-supplied, the bathtub was a large and had a nice skylight overhead; I tried the jets but the water that came out smelled sour and old so they were quickly turned off. *Definitely heard voices and noise from from the other side of the duplex so don't expect resort-like quietness. The grounds-staff were friendly guys while the front office did not have that professional warmth that you expect in a nicer establishment. If you live in the city and are dying for a country retreat (and don't mind paying the money), you could definitely have a pleasant stay here. Next time we will search for a vacation home closer to one of the parks - for $350 (or less!) you can rent some really lovely homes. read more

It was way too cold in the evening to go out to the tub. since no other guests were there either I expect they all felt the same way. I suggest that management either raise the temperature or change their description from "hot tub" to "kinda-warm tub". read more

This was our favorite hotel on our trip to Utah. If it had been closer to Capitol Reef or Bryce Canyon it would have been absolutely perfect. Every little detail was thought out. They have a hot tub, fire pit (you can get marshmallows from the front desk), massage chairs, a beautiful view of a bird sanctuary/pond, volleyball and frisbee golf, and an excellent restaurant featuring fresh, local food. We are vegetarians and there were plenty of options for us (Hell's Backbone Grill). There are several area hikes, including the Lower Falls at Calf Creek Recreation Area not too far away. You can rent board games to use in the extensive common areas. We only stayed one night on our way from Moab (Arches) to Bryce Canyon, but it would really be the perfect place to host a family reunion and spend several days. Rooms were clean, not spectacular, but nice. The balcony overlooking the pond was lovely. Staff was super nice. read more

Beautiful place, beautiful location. Just plain beautiful. The rooms are clean and spacious. They have a western vibe without feeling kitschy or overdone. There's a gorgeous hot tub area and tons of lawn/board games. The on-site restaurant is phenomenal. And the location is unsurpassed. Boulder, UT probably has the best natural-beauty-to-traveler-density ratio in the country. Sure, there are a handful of other places where you could hike through red rock canyons and mountain meadows in the same day. But those places are usually overrun with tourist swarms. Not so in Boulder, where the natural world seems to have preserved itself for your personal indulgence. read more
