The bathroom was surprisingly large with plenty of room to place all your toiletries a the shower was watertight and had more than sufficient water pressure and temperature range (which were both adjustable). Breakfast was prompt with Graham cooking and serving the the dining room downstairs, and the food was quite nice. The Mellon Patch is a family-run B&B, tucked away in the village of Carrbridge, which is really near Aviemore. We stayed there just for the one night this summer and the owners couldn't have been nicer, it really felt like we were staying with family or friends. The rooms were all ensuite, beautifully decorated, extremely clean and welcoming, there were even fresh flowers in the room, even though they didn't know we were coming!! We didn't eat breakfast, through choice, but they took the time to make a fresh pot of coffee for us before we left to send us on our way. Lovely gardens which can be seen at least from the 'Yellow Room', and the place itself is set into woodland, beautiful countryside just a stone's throw from the now very commercial centre of Aviemore. We spent 3 weeks in Scotland and found so many kind and loving places to stay and met many wonderful people. Our stay at the Avalon was our worst memory. The place itself was good, the breakfasts were great, but the memory of the owners still make us shudder. Maybe it is because we are Americans? The owners did seem much warmer to the other guests. From the moment we walked in the door, Val was in a rush to go out to dinner with friends. She seemed put out and really in need of a vacation herself. We borrowed a pillow in the room for a car ride and felt treated like thieves the next day. Funny, the next B&B we stayed at on Skye (Achalochan House) insisted that we bring their impressive binoculars in our car for our day trips. What a difference.

The house is decorated with stunning photographs and artwork of wildlife - always something new that destracts me! We've just returned from our second stay for two nights and enjoyed it as much, if not more, than our first! Our first stay was in one of the chalets at the back of the property which are probably a little more spacious than one of the front bedrooms we stayed in this time around, but never-the-less, both rooms and en-suites are stylishly decorated, very comfortable, well equipped and very clean. The plus to staying in a room (No.5) at the front of the house is that you get a wonderful view of the Cairngorm Mountains a real treat as the sun sets and also again when you open the blinds first thing in the morning! Beds are not as firm as we'd prefer (personal preference I'm sure many like a slightly softer mattress would have no problem at all), but still comfortable and the bedlinen is good quality which all goes a long way towards a very good night's sleep and a restful stay. Breakfast offers a wide choice great range of cereals, fresh fruit, fruit salad, white & wholemeal toast and Jonathan's homemade marmelade try it, it's truly delicious! We also tried the delicious (and none greasy) full traditional Scottish breakfast (with plenty of flexibility to accomodate all diets and tastes!), Poached eggs (eggs not laid by the chickens in the outside pen, but we were confidently assured were local & free range) and smoked salmon on muffins (a lovely, tasty way to start the day!), alternatively the homemade porridge with berry fruit compote, seeds, honey or plain is also a real treat and will certainly set you up for a day's exploring and activity! The lounge with it's open fire (lit in the colder months), cosy rugs, antique style furniture, plus welcoming resident cat Milly(!), make for a great place to relax and chill out either after breakfast or after a day's skiing, hiking or cycling! Overall a very welcoming place to stay in a charming traditional style house which is very restful and relaxing with delicious breakfasts. You couldn't wish for anymore from a B&B!
