It's preposterous how cheap you guys get some killer basic Italian nosh! Absolutely ludicrous! Coffee and cake for only $2.80? Okay, so I'm too afraid to try the coffee. But it's not like I come to Maurita every single time I am down the coast for the coffee... It's the cannoli. A mere $3 each shell, with fillings of vanilla custard, chocolate custard, or--my personal favourite--ricotta and fresh cream, otherwise known as cannoli Sicilliani. Be still, my beating heart. Ever since the guy at work who lives down on the GC brought in a whole jenga stack of cannoli for us office drones, I have been a fan. For my birthday at work earlier this year, my only request was "CANNOLI, PLEASE". Any time I've had to do a work favour for this guy, I've asked for payment in cannoli. And then, earlier this year, I was down on the GC for a day, and I realised... I could have it all. I could have my cannoli and eat it, too. I could visit Cannolo Mecca. The work guy coughed up the name and address and it was immediately added to my itinerary. It wasn't until I got to Maurita that I discovered it's got a lot more going on than just cannoli, though if they wanted to close down everything else there and just focus on cannoli, I'd still be okay with it. I'm not sure the locals would agree, though, because the couple of times I've been there myself now, it's been swamped with people at the small, cramped seating areas both inside and outside, stuffing their faces with as much savoury as sweet. $3 bruschetta, $4 pizzas, $4.50 salad rolls, $5 focaccias, $5 lasagna with salad & crusty bread... this is getting out of hand. What about global inflation!? Look, my only problem with writing this review is that now I really want some more cannoli and I'm not sure when I'll be able to get my next fix. Better go see if that guy at work needs any favours.

The first thing that caught my eye - almond croissant with toasted crunchy extra and beautifully moist almond meal interior... I tried the half lammingtons with cream and it reminded of days gone by sitting with my aunt in country NSW eating lammingtons and sipping tea. Memories flooded back as I enjoyed every mouthful. The owners chatted about their cakes and about their trading hours. They are open as from 1am! Wow, couldn't believe it. As the owners explained they have a number of taxi drivers, bus drivers and travellers buying their products all hours of the night. My companion and I enjoyed a steamy hot coffee with our cakes and I know we will return there soon.

Bumbleebee Bakery at Eight Mile Plains is the exception to the rule. As a bakery, it does a mean trade on meat pies, sausage rolls and those nasty, artery blocking jam and cream buns. There are also some scrumptious cakes and macaroons available. The macaroons are $2.20 each or six for $13. They come in an assortment of flavours and the fillings are more buttery than creamy. There is also a small Chinese baked goods section with sweet breads filled with red bean paste, BBQ pork buns and coconut buns. It's sort of like a sampler selection from Breadtop. To top it off, the staff are always friendly and cheerful. Usually they're out the back whipping up fresh new cakes but will immediately bustle out as soon as you ring the bell. What more can one ask from a neighbourhood bakery? Bumblebee gets five out of five from me for being the first decent bakery on Brisbane's far South side.
