Truth be told, we initially went to a different diner that serves their entire breakfast, lunch and dinner menu all day. My husband likes getting breakfast at restaurants, I do not, so I had my heart set on a Hot Chicken Sandwich with fries, yep at 9 in the morning! Haha. However, that diner was too busy, so we headed over to Steele's. I was initially thrilled to see they also had Hot Chicken Sandwiches on the menu, but unfortunately, their deep fryer was not ready yet, so they were only serving breakfast :( My husband got the Combination Breakfast ($10.95) which came with 2 eggs (he got them over easy), 2 slices of bacon, 2 sausages, a slice of ham, home fries, toast and coffee. I got a Western Sandwich ($7.95). I was asked what I wanted in the Western so I choose ham, peppers and cheese. I got it on brown bread. It was good, but the thing with breakfast, is unless it's Eggs Benedict, or souffle pancakes, I feel it's something I can easily make myself at home (Hollandaise sauce is difficult for me, haha). When I go to restaurants, I want something I can't easily make at home, this is why I'm not a breakfast restaurant goer (well, unless they deep-fry their home fries, because I don't deep-fry at home, lol). Anyway, my husband enjoyed his breakfast. I did notice that they cut their sausages in half lengthwise, which means more cooking surface and they get crispier, which is awesome! I had some of his home fries, they were nicely seasoned. Our server was the owner's daughter (when I asked if they were serving lunch menu items, she said she had to ask her dad). She was very pleasant and we got our food quickly. The atmosphere is old school diner-like. No frills, very utilitarian. Prices are good for these days. The most expensive thing on the menu is less than $15. I saw they had a sign that Sunday is customer appreciation day and for a limited time (not sure until when) everything on their menu is $8.95 all day. The Long Version: I love food places tucked away in industrial parks. So when I had a medical appointment in an industrial part of town, I looked up all the eateries nearby and Shorty's popped up. I picked up 2 sandwiches. They were $8.41 each and were huge. I ate half of each and saved the rest for later. The first sandwich was a grilled chicken sandwich and the second sandwich was a build your own 3 meats sandwich. I chose ham, turkey and roast beef. I got havarti as the cheese. For the grilled chicken sandwich, I got double smoked cheddar as the cheese. I got both sandwiches on the cheese and jalapeno bread and got the same toppings on both: lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles, spicy eggplant, crispy onions and crispy jalapenos. I didn't get any sauce/dressing on the sandwiches because I don't like wet sandwiches. Both sandwiches were delicious. I loved all the different toppings and the crispy onions and jalapenos gave it that extra crunch. I'm all about textures so I really enjoyed the contrasts. Service was efficient. I got a slice of their Yuzu Cream cake, admittedly because it was on sale, lol. It was only $3.99 a slice, while all the other cakes were in the $6.99-$9.99 range. The slices are pretty small, so I did find the regular prices...er...pricey, haha. However, that seems to be the trend these days. Everything is pricey. The cake was delicious. Both the cake and the whipped cream frosting were light and airy and not too sweet. It had a subtle yuzu flavour. I would definitely recommend No70 Cake if you like cake but find conventional cakes too sweet. Service was courteous and quick. There's free parking in the plaza parking lot.
