I placed an order Sunday night to help support my niece's cheer team. Pickup options started as…read moreearly as Tuesday at 8 am, so I picked that time. My husband and I selected 4 special donuts: oreo nirvana, boston creme, maple bacon, and lemon ricotta. Pickup was straightforward--the location had plenty of parking at 8 am, and I popped in, gave them my name from the order, and was shortly on my way home with the donuts! The donuts were pretty good but not particularly spectacular. Oreo Nirvana: The cake had a great texture, but it didn't taste as chocolatey as I had expected. Still an enjoyable choice. Boston Creme: My husband said it was good, so I'll take his word! Maple Bacon: My absolute favourite. The balance of maple flavour and bacon was perfect--the flavours harmonized wonderfully, instead of competing. Lemon Ricotta: My husband rated it a 7/10 but noted that the ricotta was a little wet and that he wished the lemon flavour had more punch. Overall, it was a good experience. I would happily support another fundraising event with Maverick's Donuts, though I might otherwise look elsewhere for satiating my personal donut cravings.

We always want what we can't have, right? I decided to look into Carb Free Baking Co., who were behind the Carb Free Cafe that used to be in the Byward Market. I had eaten there a few times while I was doing keto and it was always great. I know they have places where you can buy their products, such as Fitness Depot at Trainyards and Johnny Farina's downtown, but they're a bit of a drive for me, so I was happy to find out they deliver. I think you can also pick up in Nepean during certain hours. For others watching their carb/sugar intakes, there's no nutritional labels on the products (some are on the website), but there's a list of common ingredients on the website, which includes almond flour, coconut flour, whey protein powder, all nuts, erythritol as a sweetener, eggs, cheese, coconut and MCT oil, vanilla, cocoa, lemon juice, and various sugar-free syrups. All products are sugar-free and gluten-free, and 5 carbs or less per serving. Though it doesn't always specify how much, note that fat content is high, as they're meant to be keto-friendly (i.e. high fat, low carb). So don't judge me, but I went a little crazy with the purchases. I bought 4 slices of banana nut loaf (2 orders of 2 slices each), a 4-pack of maple-pecan cinnamon buns, cookies 'n' cream cake (2 slices per order), and a variety pack of donuts (6 donuts). Don't worry, I shared with my husband :) We put them all in the fridge right away so that they wouldn't get too warm and melty. I also stuck two slices of the banana bread in the freezer for future cravings. I warmed up one of the slices just slightly as a rich and delicious breakfast that kept me full for quite awhile. The maple-pecan cinnamon buns were wonderful as a warm breakfast or snack as well. They're smaller but decadent. The dough is just a bit salty, as I believe they use fathead dough (made with eggs and mozzarella), but it wasn't too salty and balanced the sweetness of the icing. The cookies 'n' cream cake was so good, even though I don't even normally like cake in general. Not too sweet, great balance between the chocolate chips and cookie parts and the cream. The husband really enjoyed this one! The donut flavors change weekly, but the one we got had Dynamo Nanaimo, Lemon Drop, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Hazelnut Crunch, Chocochip, and Strawberry Fields, all pretty self-explanatory. Notably, the Lemon Drop quite tart and refreshing (also comes with a slice of fresh lemon on top), and I liked that the Dynamo Nanaimo came with a piece of a Nainaimo bar on top that was really good, but the Chocolate Peanut Butter was my favourite. It also came with a piece of a chocolate peanut butter cup on top that I could've easily eaten a ton of! The Chocochip was definitely the plainest, the Hazelnut Crunch had a hazelnut in the middle but otherwise didn't have much hazelnut flavour, and the strawberry fields was nice but faint as well. Since they're specialty products, they're definitely not cheap and rang me up just over $100 (including tax and $9 delivery). Even still, I was happy to pay it! They're delivered the next day by Gopher, a third party, and I think some if not all are previously frozen, but it didn't affect quality whatsoever. Everything was so good and really satisfied my cravings for awhile (I swear I didn't eat them all at once).

The Long Version: This Tim Hortons location opened up in early 2025 where the Nu Grocery store used to be. It opened not long after the Westboro location and they both have the same look and feel. This Hintonburg location has more seating but it is still relatively small. There are 4 tables of 2 and a table of 4. I have mixed feelings about having a Tim Hortons in Hintonburg for the same reasons as I do about having a Tim Hortons in Westboro. These are neighbourhoods that used to have mostly unique independently-owned shops, so the moving in of a large multinational changes the landscape. However, I do welcome a quick and relatively inexpensive place to grab a snack or drink. The place is brightly lit and clean. Staff were pleasant. There was a decent selection of baked goods. I got a large Pistachio Latte ($4.99). It's a latte with pistachio syrup, whipped cream and white chocolate curls on top. I got it with oat milk (the other options were 2% milk or almond milk. The Long Version: This Tim Hortons opened up in Westboro to little fanfare on December 21, 2024. I have mixed feelings because when I first moved to the area it was filled with mostly small independent businesses, and with time, the big multinationals have moved in and pushed the little guys out. This specific location though, was a Dairy Queen, so in this instance, just trading one big company for another. I just feel the landscape of Westboro is changing and the opening of a Tim Hortons in the neighbourhood could be a sign of the big conglomerates taking over. The rents are skyrocketing so the small businesses are getting priced out and only the big guys can afford to stay/move in. I don't know, that might be a commentary about bigger issues for another time. If I put all that aside though, having a Tim Hortons in this neighbourhood has its advantages. You can get quick inexpensive food. Tim Hortons as a brand does have a special place in my heart since I used to hang out at Tim Hortons a lot as a teenager, since there was one just by my highschool. Admittedly, the quality of the food at Tim Hortons as a whole has gone down significantly since my highschool days though. This specific location is great, in comparison to other locations presently. It's just a bit small. The only seating they have is 2 small round tables each with 2 chairs. It's mostly for takeout. It's bright and clean. Staff are pleasant and cheerful. And they'll do little things like draw a happy face on the lid of your cup. Their steeped tea is delicious. I like it with a lot of oat milk and they make it creamy and delicious every time. The only thing is they don't have honey as a sweetener, even though it's listed as available on their app, but I've found that this is not uncommon, as I've had this issue at many other locations as well.
