Adam came out, assessed the situation and came up with a plan that wouldn't drain our bank account. He and his crew dug a new French Drain, installed a water barrier on the concrete wall, then installed a 'catch basin' outside which captured the water from the French Drain to take it off the property via yet another drainage system. In addition, they installed a sump pump and drain under the cottage so that if any subsurface water rose up, it would be drained off as well. That was seven years ago and everything is still working as anticipated. Adam and his crew are amazing and their work ethic is among the best we've ever encountered. If you have a foundation crack, save yourself the time and trouble and call Avalon Structural first. I got multiple estimates for my fairly extensive ~23' horizontal crack. I found there are three types of companies. The first type will do the minimum to chip out the rusted rebar, throw some fresh rebar in there, patch it up with a "band-aid", and charge you handsomely for a quick in-and-out job. The second will glance at your foundation and immediately tell you it has to be replaced, for an even more handsome price, of course. And then there is Avalon Structural. They will perform a comprehensive and highly structurally sound repair, removing all compromised material, charge a fair price, and stand behind their work with a strong warranty. If you visit their website, read the articles, and watch the videos explaining the right and wrong ways to perform foundation repairs, you will be well-equipped to choose the right company for your foundation job. Or, you can save the time and just call them. We couldn't be happier with our repair. The foundation looks great and feathers in perfectly with the undamaged foundation sections. He had several suggestions but thought the major renovation of our little 1892 Italianate Victorian would be a good fit for contractor- Steve Hansmann. It was clear Steve was the right guy for our project. His family's long tradition of fine building in Santa Cruz was evident from the start with Steve's in depth knowledge of the right places to get the specialty lumber and materials to do an authentic restoration while taking advantage of the latest framing and construction techniques. Steve lined up a great team of subcontractors to help with our house. We were really happy with the electrician, tile and HVAC guy. They were outstanding and true craftsmen that clearly have a passion for their trades. We had some issues with the drywall and kitchen cabinet people but Steve helped us thru the troubleshooting process. My husband and I both have design backgrounds and found working with Steve fantastic. He allowed us to play a major role in shaping the thousands of decisions on details that made the finish product match our vision incredibly well. Steve was a true partner in that process leveraging his years of experience to offer options while helping to contain costs and maintain our aggressive schedule. I don't think I've met anyone who has said their major renovation came in under budget and ahead of schedule, but what's really important is that in the end you feel like you got a quality home you can love. We love our home and after all was said and done, as much as you can, we enjoyed the process.

The second time was similar. We had a water line break and it damaged the entire bathroom in the master bedroom. We were displaced from our bedroom and the house was hazardous. Joe was already booked with other projects, but was able to rearrange some of his staff and was able to start fixing the house that very day. Three weeks later, we had a beautiful bathroom. We hadn't anticipated doing another bathroom remodel, and certainly hadn't budgeted for it. I am BLOWN AWAY by the result of my MAJOR home renovation with Cypress Construction - These guys…read moreare just AWESOME! This was the 4th major home renovation I have undertaken. This was hands down the BEST experience I have had. On top of the build, we passed our inspection quickly and easily - most likely due to the close relationships Cypress has with the city. I'm going to spend more time writing this review because this company more than deserves it. I can't believe they don't have more reviews from customers on this site. I'll try to describe my experience of the main people I interacted with at Cypress. Michael, the contractor, is very personable, takes lots of notes, is very detailed orientated, and came to the building site frequently to ensure things were progressing as we planned. The biggest problem I've had in the past with contractors is them not showing up! In this case, I felt as if we Michael's team was very available and it seemed like they were on site working almost every day. If they were not going to be on site, I was given plenty of notice - however this didn't matter because they work fast and are mega productive. One weekend, I got a complaint from a neighbor because one of Cypress' team members was finishing something he hadn't finished during the week and voluntarily came to site to finish his work on his day off. I have to say that is pure dedication and commitment! My wife and I had very specific things we wanted implemented and Michael spent a lot of time throughout the project trying help us see out that vision. He would send a follow up email summarizing all the points discussed to make sure it was clear on both sides - this was just one of the ways he showed how professional he was. I respected how he was very diplomatic, fair when things didn't work out, and he stood ready to quickly fix any items to satisfy our needs. Michael sensed that we were so focused on details and as a result began to ask us lots of questions about specifically which items, which sizes, and which locations we wanted things. I really appreciated this as this is the type of working relationship we wanted - especially given that home owners or even contractors prefer to let the contractor make these decisions so that they can move quicker. Once the project was finished, I provided him a punch list of items that needed to be fixed. Michael quickly set up time to fix those items. Several weeks later, I came up with another punchlist, then another later down the line. Michael was extremely fair and did not charge us or provide us with a date in which we could not provide him further feedback. He's super professional. Michael has a very high emotional intelligence and this will become apparent when you work with him. We really enjoyed working with him. Forest, the foreman, is an incredible builder, does incredible electrical work, works very fast, has a strong command of the team, has a wealth of building knowledge, and is a real problem solver. On site, Forest helped us solve a couple complicated scenarios we were facing. We wanted a double sink for our vanity, but there was not enough space to fit it - Forest recommended we move a wall, which wouldn't cost much because it was not load bearing and this was a massive WIN for us! He also came up with a solution to fit a vanity in the guest bathroom, which didn't fit initially due to city code constraints. On a different occasion, he recommended a low cost, high quality option for a post we had in our kitchen. This enabled us to save money, but still have a high-end look and finish. One of our biggest challenges was installing a spiral stair case while still meeting all city code constraints - Forest came prepared to meet with the stair builder by mapping out exactly where the stairs would go and was able to have a productive conversation with the stair builder on exactly how it would be installed. I sunk tons of design hours and spent weeks of thinking and discussion to make this happen - however in the end, we passed inspection without a hitch and the stairs look incredible! When on site, I would frequently see Mark with other Cypress team members. Mark did a fantastic job transforming our popcorn ceiling and textured walls to smooth, among many other things. It transformed the place in an instant! We had a terrible designer / "structural engineer" who delayed our project by 2 months and created plans to install a 9 foot post to support the spiral stairs. Mark, questioned this and suggested we install blocking, which would have the same effect but be a fraction of the cost and take only a couple hours. The structural engineer agreed, which saved us time and thousands of dollars! As you can tell, we're extremely happy with Cypress' incredible work and we are so grateful we chose Cypress. They are a very personable, intelligent, and honest team, who produce SOLID work! I would wholly recommend Cypress to family and friends and would use them again!
