This week while traveling through Eastern Oregon, I had a check engine light come on. I called a…read morecouple places inquiring is they had the ability to read what the light was indicating. Both said no, but one referred me to Hometown Auto. I pulled in as was greeted by a very nice lady working the front counter. I asked if they had time to hook their computer up to my pickup to determine what the problem was. Her answer was sure (even though they appeared to be busy. A young man downloaded the code but couldn't determine what it meant. He and who I assume was the owner and possibly the husband of young lady, went into the office downloaded to code and determined it was something to do with fuel injection and deceleration. Since I wasn't experiencing any problems, they reset the code (which hasn't reappeared) and said they would just drive it. I went back inside and asked what I owed them. They said nothing. Coming from the Bay Area of Ca, this kind of genuine service and kindness is hard to come by. If your from the area and are in need of mechanical work on a vehicle I would give them a try.

What impressed me is that they put my car on the lift as soon as it arrived. I was planning on getting a motel room and being stuck overnight. What also astonished me is that any normal shop would have dinged me for an hour (which would be totally expected and fair) but I was told that they are too ethical to do business like that. They told me that I needed a new transfer case, (cost: nearly $2000 plus labor). I asked about a rebuild. Nope, it was too far gone, they told me. I asked about a used case. Nothing doing. When I asked them about the readout, I was told, "That's what happens when your transfer case starts to go out". I thought that answer sounded fishy, so I brought it to another mechanic for a 2nd opinion. I did not need a new transfer case- or even a rebuild. All I needed was a new detent pin. Cost: $72.00. The readout? A $26.00 sensor took care of that. Total cost? Just south of three hundred bucks. Perhaps factory shops cannot use aftermarket rebuild kits, I dunno. But these folks were either incompetent, or just flat-out lied to me. If you are a woman, or a guy who is not mechanically inclined? BEWARE! Like I would ever buy a vehicle from them after that experience...

Parts had to be delivered from Bend, but Auto Zone failed to give the radiator to the courier (it should have arrived at noon). So, the owner's wife drove to Bend and got the radiator (150 miles each way). The repairs were done with deliberate haste. Amazing kindness and work ethic. We stayed in our camper on site for the whole time. A true blessing to us! We highly recommend this business.

Trevor didn't just fix our car, he also came and picked us up at our hotel so we did not have to walk to his shop, he went out of his way to make sure the car was fixed early so we could make it back to Medford in time for my 6:00 flight. Brought car in cause my driver side door was completely and utterly jammed. Asked for a diagnostic…read more Kept calling to ask for an estimate and they kept saying to "call in an hour." Then called asking if it was ok for them to take off the door panel for the diagnostic I said "is that needed?" And they said it was already off. Once again I asked for an estimate and was told to call in an hour. Then in an hour was told they would call. They kept my car for two days and after that they estimated OVER SEVEN HUNDRED for the estimate and the REPAIR I DIDNT ASK FOR because they had to order a part. My uncle and dad (both used to work on cars) went in with me to figure out what was happening and the owner wouldn't even look at me when I tried to speak nor would he address me. Only my father or uncle. When told to talk to me because it's my car and he was being rude he only rolled his eyes at my mother who was the one to say if then continued to ignore me. So I asked for my key, payed the 300 for the diagnostic (still insane they only had my car for that long because they REFUSES to tell me what was happening) and left. Upon getting home I found the reason they charged so much was NOT to order the needed part which I ordered myself for $48. It was because when refusing to give me any information it was because they BROKE my door panel and tore through some of the wiring and were trying to charge me repairs to cover their asses. Why did all this happen? Because I'm a young woman who clearly didn't know much and went into their shop expecting them to treat me like a human but instead they took advantage of my naivety and I learned the hard lesson that I will never be taken seriously unless I have my big scary ex mechanic dad with me.
