I've been smoking a pipe for decades. I bought my first pipe at the Tinder Box in La Mesa, and later would drop by the Tinder Box in Santa Monica to sample new tobaccos. All of these are gone now. But Palm Springs still has a Tinder Box, and along with a well stocked humidor, they have a good range of pipes, pipe accessories, and tobaccos. This is a rare and wonderful thing and I will support them as much as possible. They are also the best place in the Valley for cigars. Prices are high, but that's not their fault. California taxes all tobacco products indiscriminately, so while rightfully trying to drive people to not smoke cigarettes, they have also destroyed the market for premium cigars and pipe tobacco. I'm happy that the Tinder Box is still around, and right down the street. Give them some support if you can. read more

Was in the neighborhood and decided to pick up a couple cigars for our New Year's Eve celebration. I'm not a cigar aficionado, but enjoy smoking them a couple times a year. Brian assisted me and was very knowledgeable about his products and how I could pair them with the wines we enjoy. The shop isn't super large, but they have everything you will need. The humidor isn't the largest I've been in, but seems well stocked. Definitely glad I found them and will be back. TIP: On street parking only and can be tough to find at times. read more

This place is fantastic, a true tobacco shop. Back in the 90's Tinderbox was a big deal. Loved going on payday to get some stogies. They focus on cigars, tobacco pipes and accessories. They do not carry any marijuana or CBD stuff. Wide variety of accessories from entry level to aficionado. Wide variety of pipe tobacco blends. The walk in humidor was well stocked with all my favorite brands and I saw some new ones I want to try. I picked up a few stogies for my wife and I to enjoy during our desert escape. I was looking for a cigarette holder. I've been doing roll your own cigarettes since they are so expensive now. My issues are that the filter isn't glued in when you do it yourself and the paper seems thinner. When you go to flick or tap your ash it feels like it's going to break. They had a short cigarette holder that was perfect and it works just like I thought. The woman in the store was super nice and helpful. Wonderful experience. Nice place but the staff was rude! I was looking at a couple items while my husband wanted to take a look at what was in the humidor. There was a woman standing at the entrance and when he walked in she told him he needed to sanitize his hands and proceeded to follow him while he looked at their cigar selection. I've visited a few Tinder Boxes in my past and to be honest I never leave satisfied. They have a very "chain establishment" type of feel to them I don't appreciate. I went into this one to see if it was any different and it wasn't. Clerks were little to no help. Not even a greeting coming into the door and the woman who attempted to assist us felt more like a security guard than an actual attendant. I bought a cigar because whenever I go into cigar shops I make it a point to do so to support the shop.This one probably didn't need the charity. The store itself was cluttered and in a disarray. I wouldn't return. I wouldn't suggest this to any serious connoisseur and I think most of not ALL Tinder Box establishments need to just go away with themselves. We hit up Tinder Box every time we come to Palm Springs. I enjoy cigars, what can I say?! I have been to many cigar shops, some good and some bad. While Tinder Box is technically a chain they are all independently run so you get that small business feel. The owner was in this time and I found him to be very social. He recommended a few of his favorites. I can always respect a shop owner when they make recommendations that clearly aren't solely to line their pockets. You know the ones I'm talking about. They point out the most expensive item and can't tell you much more than 'It's the best!'. This guy was able to describe the experience to me in depth and while his recommendation wasn't cheap, it clearly wasn't the most expensive either. He was very welcoming and friendly which can be a bit of a rarity in the Cigar world when you aren't a middle aged older guy. My partner also purchased me one of my favorite expensive cigars and the shop owner made a friendly comment that I have a 'very nice sweety' It made me smile. I'll definitely be back on our next Palm Springs trip. read more

The woman at the counter on April 5, during the Thursday night street fair, was rude and indifferent to my complaint. Yes, it's a Tinder Box--a chain--and not a higher-end cigar shop with an owner or staff of real aficionados. But I didn't need help picking my cigars this time, so against my better judgment I gave it a chance because I had mistakenly thought my local favorite had closed. I had walked in with a bag of sealed, UNOPENED kettle corn that I was taking home and walked straight to the walk-in humidor. The woman at the counter immediately barked out to me that I can't have my bag with me. That's fine if they don't want food in the store (though she would not say why I could not have the bag). But if she would have been more friendly, maybe suggesting she could hold my bag at the counter instead of telling me to leave it outside or on a chair, I might not have walked out. When a customer comes into a store intending to spend money--my heading straight for the humidor knowing what I was going to buy should have been a signal to a savvy retailer--the operative word is "hello," not "You can't go in there with that!" Then what should follow is something like, "Can I help you find something?" or a friendlier way to deal with customers. If you want to be helped by a friendlier owner and by folks who know about the cigars they sell, go to Fame, across the street and a bit south just past the Ruby's restaurant. I had not been to Palm Springs in a year and mistakenly thought it was on the other side of Ruby's and missed it. I'm glad I found it soonafter my mistake of going to a chain cigar store. I should have trusted my original feeling that these are just a step up from the common low-end smoke shop. read more

As I walked into the establishment, I was greeted with a warm "hello!" This shop has great novelty as well as a very nice selection of cigars. Prices are fair considering the new tobacco tax and the location of the shop being on the strip. The "other" shop I reviewed was on average about $2.00 more. Palm Springs weekend. Rental upgrade to a Mustang convertible. Cool hat to beat the sun. Poolside wedding and party. Feeling very Rat Pack. I can do that era. We wander into the Tinder Box looking for something interesting. The smells were wonderful and the staff was welcoming. They pulled out their bin of "affordable" pipes--not cheap--and we found an amazing Italian-made number straight from the Rene Magritte painting. It's aesthetically pleasing, felt good in the hand, and was purported to be versatile. Then we move to tobacco. They ask about our likes and dislikes, help us compare tobacco to wine, and select two one-ounce bags of smooth and sweet shredded leaf to get us started. A few pipe tools (affordable but well-made) complete the purchase. I have to say I've derived a great amount of pleasure from the stuff they sold us. The tobacco tastes great, the pipe work perfectly, and the little book they handed us on the way out explained exactly how to make everything work properly. The flavors of the leaf closely matched our tastes, just as promised, and the prices were more than reasonable (dangerously so, even, since a bag of the good stuff still cost less than a pack of nasty cigarettes). I don't smoke very often, but I'm sure to enjoy that pipe now and then. read more

Hi, I stopped here and picked up a decent butane lighter I could use in & outdoors with a small pipe. The gal that helped me was knowledgeable & suggested a couple lighters. I bought one that angled down she suggested, which does help with a pipe. Within a few days it began either not igniting, or a very low flame. I had topped the butane off before. I took the lighter back, (did mention I used it at altitude, which she informed me can be an issue with butane lighters). She did check out the lighter, we compared with a new one, and she did notice mine wasn't working properly. she gave me a brand new one, (topped w/ butane), even though I didn't have my receipt). New ones working much better, and it's nice to support locals biz & those that understand customer service too. jerry read more

While visiting downtown Palm Springs after attending a work-related conference in Rancho Mirage, I was able to sneak away from my colleagues and do a little cigar shopping. I went to two other stores in the downtown area and each had a dismal selection in terms of variety and the prices were absurdly high even given high tobacco taxes in CA. Felt reserved about Tinder Box, since the quality of each store hinges on the owner and I have visited some real duds in the past, I walked a couple of extra blocks to get there. What a pleasant experience! Both of the staff working were helpful and friendly. I like to ask for recommendations based on my favorites and ultimately it is easy to tell whether the store employee knows their tobacco. The male employee who assisted me was knowledgeable and made great recommendations including one cigar that I knew I liked and a new one that was wonderful. While it is unlikely that I will be in Palm Springs again anytime soon, I wanted to share that this store is worth visiting and has a good selection and typical prices. read more

The tinder box is my choice in the valley for tobacco even though it is in Palm Springs. This is one of the stores that I do not mind crossing over to go to. They stock not only the top notch cigars and pipe tobacco's, they also stock a decent selection of affordable cigars. Be sure to attend one of their amazing cigar dinners to meet a really interesting collection of people from throughout the valley (and across the country). What a great place. I am a frequent customer, though I do not live in the area. The selection is outstanding and the personal service provided is not matched by any other cigar shop. I typically stock up on my regulars like Flor de Las Antillas Toro and various lines of Perdomo, but I always like suggestions from the owner Brian. Nothing like a visit to the Springs, and when you're there, make sure you take a visit to one of the many tobacco shops in the area. I chose to go to the tinder box as I was familiar with it back in LA. The folks here are very knowledgeable about their product, and weren't afraid to call customers out on their bullshit when they came off douchey as they asked for every cigar on the top 10 list of the cigar aficionado magazine. They also have a nice assortment of lighters, I think I saw every Colibri lighter in stock at this place, definitely a nice place to visit for a cigar smoker. read more
