Tipo is AMAZZZZING!!! We had been once before a while back when it was in a construction zone. And recently went. We sat at the bar. And a couple of gentleman ended up sitting next to us as well. Which was great, because we ended up sharing food, allowing us to taste more than we had personally ordered. We got the prosciutto appetizer which was so good! My bf got the Rye Cavatelli, and I got the spaghetti and meatballs. The sauce for both of those was perfection!!! Both entrees were extremely good. Can't remember everything we tried from the people next to us, but do remember the flat bread. Also really enjoyed the esthetic, and j loved the white marble bar top. Which was also very good! Cute neighborhood setting with Old Port level quality, without the hassle of street parking. We made a reservation, as suggested, but it wasn't busy at There's no fountain soda here, which I found as odd for a place that does have liquor. If you want a drink, it's best to pick from their speciality menu because they can't make common drinks such as rum and coke. Each of the four of us ordered a different beverage and none of us ordered another. They just weren't great concoctions. The portion sizes on the snacks and plates were underwhelming (specifically the calamari, the arancini and the smoke pork crostini). I was couldn't decide between the pasta or the pizza so I said the heck with it and got both, figuring leftovers are always a good thing. The seasonal pasta dish that included fiddleheads in it ( I forget the name!) was delicious. I also enjoyed my "Spring" pizza. If tossing and prepping it in front of you wasn't proof enough, you can tell from taste alone that the dough is fresh and cooked in a brick oven. If I went again, I'd stick with ordering the main meals, no apps or mixed drinks to get the most bang for my buck BUT everything was delicious so I can't knock them in the flavor category-- for food. read more

You know that feeling when you found your new favorite dress, drink, or friend? Well, boys and girls... I have found my new favorite restaurant. What started off as simply driving by this restaurant several times turned into a quest for the perfect aperol spritz. Lo and behold I stumbled upon the happy hour menu at Tipo. From 4 to 6 PM Monday through Friday they offer $6 drinks, $5 snacks and $8 plates. I have ordered several items... mozzarella arancini balls, which are crispy, smooth and indulgent. The homemade mozzarella which was beautifully plated but my least favorite. The marinated olives were perfect not overly oily or vinegary, even my one year old was licking her chomps for them. The margarita pizza with extra sauce on the side for dipping is a must. It's cheesy, sweet, crunchy heaven. I have had a lot of good pizza in my life but this pizza takes the cake ringing in at eight dollars!!!!!! Do yourself a favor and visit this clean, sleek, beautiful restaurant and try not to enjoy yourself to much, I promise it will it be difficult! read more

Wasn't going to write this review because we want to keep it our little neighborhood secret, but it's too good to not sing praises. Pizza is just like what you get in Italy (and I worked as a chef for a summer in a restaurant in Umbria), and the spaghetti with meatballs, while simple, is perfect. The other pastas are always good, but for me slightly off the mark compared to the dishes mentioned above. The Rotolo was the secret started/small plate that was my highlight of the meal until they took it off the menu (because it wasn't describe well so people didn't order it). Always a little different, always delicious, but my personal favorite was the porchetta version that kicked it off. Perfect patio (with heated seats) + perfect pizza = perfect win, always. read more

I took my partner here for a casual birthday celebration. I made the reservation online and added a note that it was his birthday. The dessert came out with the candle on top and the boy was happy! I really appreciate the attention that they gave us. I would describe the food as modern American. This was my first time here at tipo! Came in for lunch and realized they also offered brunch on Saturdays 11-3pm. Started off with a prosecco and half dozen oysters which came with a prosecco mignonette and caper mignonette. I enjoyed the prosecco over the caper. Next up was the Arinicini which was served on a nice Smokey tomato sauce which has some heat. The Arincini itself had a nice crunch on the outside and creamy risotto. For an element of freshness, there was some crunchy ridiccio and fennel slaw? My favorite of the afternoon. Next up was the carbonara which had a light hint if lemon zest which tasted well with the poached egg. The guanchalle was juicy and crisp. Lastly, the potato hash accompanied with fresh made sourdough with drizzled olive oil and Italian herbs yummm I love their bread! Great place for sharing small plates. read more

I LOVE TIPO. You can really taste that all the food served here is made from fresh, quality ingredients. The flavor combinations in each dish are fantastic. I tried to the hand pulled mozzarella appetizer and I was licking the sweet pesto sauce off the plate once I was done because I couldn't get enough. Highly recommend trying that for an appetizer if you like savory and sweet flavors together + if you are looking for a lighter/refreshing appetizer. For entrees, I went with the Prosciutto di Parma pizza and was not disappointed: meaning I STUFFED my face with every bite I could get: very fresh and tasty. The caramelized onions added a unique sweet taste that made the whole dish come together in harmony. My sister had the Garganelli pasta - very delicious but a rather small portion size for the price. Nonetheless I assure you everything here is delicious no matter what you get - awesome variety of entrees + the perfect amount so that you are not overwhelmed with options. My husband and I were heading home on a Friday night around 8 and decided to seek out dessert. Unable to come up with anything interesting, we drove past Tipo, decided WTH, and walked in. The staff was friendly and really ok with us "just" stopping in for dessert. Once we checked out the menu, we realized they only offered three dessert choices. Problem? Not at all, we selected two from the list of three and they were both FANTASTIC! 1. Three light and airy zeppole, served with a whipped ricotta. 2. A deconstructed lemon semifreddo with olive oil cake chunks. While they were both great, the zeppole was over the top excellent, like in an, I-have-to-come-back-right-away-to-eat-this-again kind of way. We both ordered americano coffees which were fresh brewed. While lingering over coffee, I asked to see their brunch menu. It was this: WOOD OVEN BRIOCHE CINNAMON BUN walnuts, currants, icing That caused me to return two days later for brunch... For brunch, we started with the cinnamon bun, and also ordered the short rib hash and a margherita pizza. The cinnamon bun was really special and constructed in a different way than I had ever had. We shared it, but could easily have eaten a whole one each. The short rib hash was very good, topped with an egg and two toast points. While I LOVED it, I do wish that it had the option of another egg. The Margherita pizza was fresh and delicious and a great size to share. I have been meaning to come here ever since it opened. Finally made it and I was not disappointed. Came little after 4pm right after they had opened and was seated right away. Our waitress was very present and attentive. We had the lamb sausage pizza with feta cheese and arugula and the prosciutto pizza. Lamb sausage was very different from other sausage pizzas that I have had. You could taste the lamb flavor and arugula gave it a fresh taste to it. Different and I loved it. The prosciutto pizza was equally as good. I loved that it was a thin crust and was not greasy. But most importantly had some fresh ingredients incorporated in it. They have happy hour from 4pm to 6pm but only at the bar. Not sure why it's not for everybody especially if you have a big party. But either way we had a great time! read more

Absolutely love Tipo and it's not just because it's walking distance to my home (though that helps!) Excellent pizza. The rye cavatelli is my absolute favorite though comes with a hefty price tag (definitely worth it when you want to splurge.) The spaghetti and meatballs is also excellent and a little more cost effective. Rotating crispy potatoes are the perfect snack. Go-to cocktails include the aperol spritz and the bold, never-watered-down sangria. The only recent bummer is that they dropped their complimentary bread and their previously wonderful happy hour menu (they still have happy hour deals but they aren't as good IMO.) Hoping this is temporary to catch up on losses during the pandemic. Either way, we will continue supporting this fantastic restaurant! read more

Wow! One of the finest dining experiences I've ever had in Portland! The food and service were extraordinary. We were encouraged to share each plate we ordered, which my dining partner and I did with enthusiasm, ordering a number of tasty treats to try. We ordered a couple of appetizers, a pasta dish, and a pizza to share. First up, were the roasted maple brussel sprouts. Let me say that normally I am.not a sprouts guy, but I could not get enough of this dish (particularly the charred bits at the bottom)! Our second appetizer was the glazed pork belly, which almost brought me to tears. I love fat with my meat (which is a prerequisite in order to enjoy this meal imo), and this was like cutting through meat flavored butter with a nice sweet glaze mixed in. Absolutely brilliant dish. Our main courses were the rye cavatelli consisting of pork ragu, marscapone and heapfuls of oregano, and a fig and gorgonzola pizza with pancetta if I recall correctly. Both were tasty, and worthy of a main course, but the true stars of the evening were definitely the sprouts and the pork belly. I can't wait to return to this lovely restaurant. read more

I've been in Portland for 9 days, and have hit up every pizza joint I could find. I wish I came here the first day, as my search for the best pizza in Portland would've ended then. Tipo, simply put, is legit. At any wood or coal fired spot, the margherita is the benchmark for which to judge the pizza as it illuminates the base ingredients that are used across most of the other pizzas... There's no hiding behind a hodgepodge of ingredients. Tipo knocked their margherita out of the park. The mozzarella is house made and perfectly salted with a nice firmness... I also had the fresh mozzarella preparation in order to scope it in it's unadulterated form, which was amazing. The tomato sauce is tangy and seasoned wonderfully. They're crust is napoletana-esque with a more open crumb structure that is sightly more firm, but still soft with an easy chew. You can tell this dough was very high hydration with no other crap in it like oil and or sugar Just flour, water, yeast, and salt... AKA the right way. They definitely cold proof this dough for at least 12 hours, and I'm not sure, but wouldn't be surprised if they used some natural leavening in it. The cook on the crust was dead on, with Leopard spotting underneath and wonderful char scattered across the cornicione. They also sprinkled a little parmigiano reggiano along with the fresh basil after it came out of the oven, giving the pie a little more umami that popped out sporadically. This was just a great pizza and clearly gut punches everything else I have had in Portland regarding ingredients, execution, and flavor. No contest. Besides the pizza, the rest of the menu looks incredible, containing chef inspired dishes ranging from pastas, antipasto dishes, full plates, charcuterie, and desserts that draw from seasonal local ingredients as well as classic Italian inspiration. As I stated above, the fresh mozzarella preparation was incredible, with figs, a pistachio pesto, and a tangerine based gastrique... Simple, bold flavors, just amazing. My wife ordered the spaghetti carbonara, which was a bit of creamier rendition, that tasted wonderful. The portion size was just right, allowing you to enjoy an appetizer along with your entree. The menu is also very affordable considering the quality of the food and how much other restaurants around Portland charge. Tipo might be there best value in all of Portland. They also have a kids menu with a cheese pizza, spaghetti and meatballs, and spaghetti and butter with cheese... This made my life so much easier, as I had my son in tow, who is a very picky little bugger. Ordered him a spaghetti and butter (no cheese), and he was in heaven, eating the entire plate in no time. They were very accommodating in regards to making sure my son was happy which really goes a long way with me as any parent will understand. The booze selection is good, with a great wine list, craft cocktails, and a smaller, but we'll curated tap as well as some bottles. The location is in a neighborhood tucked away from the touristy part of Portland, giving you a nice calm reprieve from that madness. The decor is modern and sparse, creating a nice open environment. They have a lovely patio as well. The oven is all brick, resembling a classic bread oven you would see from an early 20th century bakery, not one of these mail order metal ovens you see at most places. The servers and hostess were welcoming, very polite, and attentive which synergized with the food into an unforgettable experience. The bottom line: Go here and enjoy. Tipo is a gem. Every meal we'll prepared, great service, seriously I cannot say enough about how much they get everything right.

My boyfriend and I went for a date night without doing much research before we got there. Boy were we impressed! I just want to start with the fact that they have Prosecco on tap. I repeat: they have prosecco on tap. And it's good. I asked the waitress and they do have some happy hour deals from 4-6pm but only at the bar. I will be returning in the near future for some happy hour bubbles. We started with the hand pulled mozzarella. This set the bar really high for the rest of the meal. Next up: the meatballs. They come in a really delicious sauce and with ricotta cheese so how could it not be yummy? Even better - some mozzarella with some meatball and sauce. We got the rye cavatelli and sausage and peppers for our mains. The pasta was yummy with a little heat to it - made me sweat a little but my boyfriend had no reaction (except laughing at me for thinking it was spicy). The sausage was the low point of the meal; it was still a little pink on the inside which made us a little nervous, but it was also at the very end of the meal so maybe that was it too. This is my hood and I have waited to eat there a few times before writing a review. Early is best for less crowd noise and the patio is now open for summer with an awning coming soon. The frequent bartender is very friendly and helpful. The food is excellent and usually worth the price; and now there is a happy hour with specially priced apps and drinks. The arancini and meatballs are in that menu which are a favorite. The sea bass ceviche was refreshing. And a rabbit saltimbocca savory and hearty for a typical cold rainy Maine spring. The dog friendly patio is a huge plus for the neighborhood. One minus is that there is little change in the menu despite a couple daily specials. read more

I really enjoyed my visit here. The casual Italian themed restaurant featured an innovative menu and great service . I ordered the mozzarella Arancini, Sicilian rice balls breaded and fried served on a bed of hearty red sauce. The smoked potatoes served atop charred scallion aioli were amazing; lightly smoky and slightly sweet. For my entree i ordered the Margherita pizza which was delicious. It was a tad wet in the middle but typical of a thin crust with fresh mozzarella. Our server, Kristin was personable and very professional. She knows her wine and the menu very well. The pizza maker, Nick manages the pizza oven like a pro not like a typical 22 year old kid would . He's oNe to watch in the Portland food scene. Overall, great food and great service. read more

Whenever my partner and I are in the Portland area, we plan a meal at Tipo. We've enjoyed their small and large plates - no pizza, yet - and all have been magnificent. For our last visit, the marinated artichoke salad and cured salmon hashbrowns were knock-your-socks-off gorgeous and delicious. I tried to take a photo, but alas, the orange glow from our patio umbrella dominated the photos! If you don't drink alcohol, I recommend skipping the drinks (lemonade, tea, soda) as they're pricey for what you get. Also, while we enjoy eating al fresco, the road next to Tipo is very loud and detracts from the outdoor experience. read more

It gives me no pleasure writing this review as I've eaten at Tipo about a dozen times and always had an overall nice experience. However, last week we ordered through 2DineIn and had some nasty surprises. We ordered a crostini starter with bean spread and pickled veggies ($8), a Margherita pizza ($10), focaccia ($2) and the halibut ($23). Both the pizza and the onions on top of the focaccia were quite burnt. And to be clear, I'm not one of those people that doesn't love char - (I love a good char!) - this was black, tasted like black would taste if it was a flavor and was just overcooked. The vegetable crostini was perfectly lovely but I felt it a bit skimpy in portion - one slender piece of toast with bean spread and a few pieces of veg, cut in half at $8 is kind of steep. But the halibut is the big disappointment. This is the third time I've ordered the halibut special, which changes slightly with the seasons. I've always enjoyed it and felt like the portion was reasonable. What we received last week was a piece of fish the size of a baby's fist with a long hair cooked into the crisp, shellac on the crust of the fish. Between the laughable portion at $23 and the nasty hair literally cooked into it, I immediately lost my appetite. I really hope they sort out the inconsistencies. This is overall a solid neighborhood restaurant. But portions so small they're almost comical and a hair baked into my $23 entree leave a lot to be desired. :( read more

I dont do many bad reviews, but when I do it's for a reason. And I had to start with Yelp, I usually do this on my blog but this place needed the extra reviews from someone that enjoys real food. Let's start off with the clashing themes nothing in this place went together and for it being an "Italian" place of eating nothing in here says hey try us this is Italian food. From the music, to the female pictures on bikes on the walls, to the random licenses plates on the bar. Even to the way they serve you water, everything was clashing and an eyesore. I even asked the waiter about all the glass on the shelves up high and she couldn't even tell me what they were there for. Now let's go on to the menu. You see not much can be said it's really small just like their portions of serving. The bread they start you off with is drizzled in low quality olive oil and very chewy. The food wasn't flavorful as many claimed it to be, instead the items we ordered was overpowered by the flavor of onion jam! It was truly everywhere, on all three items. By the end of the night we couldn't get the taste of burnt pizza and onion jam out of our mouths. They serve you 2 star quality food for the price of 4 star meals. I was expecting more, way more. From the moment you walk through the door your greeted with smiling and cheerful faces, and with nice size staff you would expect a more diverse menu, instead you receive spit on fine dining. As with many restaurants in the past I have had the pleasure of eating at, you can truly see them succeed from the way they cook to the way they serve, but in my opinion Tipo I do not see going very far. If you want to waste your money on this self-deception of dining then go ahead, and let's be clear I am not writing this review out of anger, but this instead is my true opinion of this establishment. read more

Amazing food, ambiance, and service. We went to Tipo for the first time and were Highly impressed. We sat on the outdoor patio which was so cute. Worth a trip outside the main downtown Portland area. The fresh pasta and pizza were amazing. You can truly taste the quality of the food here. The bartender made us custom cocktails, listened to our wants and made us exactly what we wanted. Recommend the beef carpaccio as well. Food was timed perfectly for each of our courses- even for a Friday night. read more

Food was delicious! The standout was the snap pea crostini that was ordered as a shared plate to start and it was so stupidly good that I ordered a second to end the meal.
