In those two weeks, my four year repeatedly told me her teachers were mean and she did not want to go to school. We had to drag her through the door crying. We witnessed other children also begging not to go into the classroom. The teachers did not greet us when we walked in at all, until I complained that no one was even saying hi to my child. They say they use conscious discipline but my child was put in timeout and threatened, and the director seemed clueless about the principles of Conscious discipline. When I picked my child up on April 2nd, she immediately told me that the part time teacher in the room had grabbed her "really hard and it really hurt". She put both hands on her hips when I asked her how she was grabbed. When I asked why, she self reported that she had gotten off her letter and was not listening and the teacher was upset. However, that night at bedtime I saw the bruises on both hips in the shape of fingers and thumbs. It took a few days for all the bruises to appear fully. I kept her home from school and demanded they check their cameras. They tried to say that they couldn't find any incidents. Eventually they were able to find the incident based on all the accurate details my 4 YEAR OLD was able to tell us. I watched it and it was concerning to say the least. The teacher chased after her, grabbed her on both hips and then held her under one arm squeezing her, brought her to the other side of the classroom and put her down in a chair and pointed in her face. You can tell how angry the teacher is on the video, you obviously cannot tell how hard she grabbed her. My child scratched her at this point trying to protect herself and was sent to the office. The school agreed that the teacher should not have picked her up like she did and she is "young and inexperienced". They had just hired her. But then instead of firing her they promoted her to full time teacher in that room. They kept insisting that the bruises did not come from the teacher and they think it's a coincidence. They sent me many screenshots of Google searches on how long it takes bruises to form. It had been 10 hours from the time she was assaulted to the time I noticed the bruises, plenty of time for a young fair skinned child to bruise. People can bruise immediately . They made several comments about how they don't think the bruises happened at their school and stories of other parents who had reported them and ENDED up losing their children. This felt like a threat, like they would do anything to protect themselves. Their decision to promote the teacher was very concerning and I ended up pulling her from their care. They also kept all of my money. I paid 1800$ on the first for the whole month and the two weeks prior and was told sorry you have to give a month's notice and was not refunded at all. My child is traumatized from this school and has ptsd symptoms. She can't even be in a daycare setting anymore because of this school, she just cries for her parents and feels unsafe. It is truly heartbreaking the damage these teachers caused. They should all be ashamed of themselves. I hope no other children here have had this happen but I would be shocked if it hasn't happened before or since. Don't take your children here.

We had a rocky start with our oldest daughter as being born during covid made for a harder transition to daycare. That being said, Parkwood worked with her and by the time she was into their preschool program she was thriving and had a strong community of kids and teachers at her disposal. By the time she "graduated" from pre-k last year we had met most of the staff and were really thrilled with everything about our experience from the extremely low turnover of staff, to the approachability of the program director, to the dedication of the founder who is still very much involved. Our daughter left Parkwood being able to write her name, read a few words, and even knowing some spanish and yoga. Nowadays, our 14 month old goes here and at this point it very much feels like we are part of a bigger community as we know many of the other families that also send their kids here, and we know the staff really well. Parkwood is now located in Overland Park at Indian Heights United Methodist Church and while it's been a while waiting on the new addition - they are working on a standalone building that will serve as their primary care center here, which I think will be wonderful once it's completed. I won't sugarcoat the price as it isn't cheap to send kids here, but it isn't the MOST expensive in town either. I find that Parkwood Day School does a good job of keeping costs as low as they can while also maintaining a safe, clean, and educational environment for all the kids that attend. All this to say, I feel really lucky to have found this school and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a good daycare/preschool to send their little ones to.

They support researched-based developmental learning for children 6 weeks to 6 years old and also have therapists (PT, OT, and speech) on site to conduct regular screenings to determine if your child needs additional developmental support/IEP. As a speech therapist myself, I was pleased to see therapy services are offered because they were not at several other places we toured. They just recently started using an app that logs your child's nap times, feeding times/amount, and potty. The thing my husband and I love is they upload pictures throughout the day and describe what activity your child is working on and what developmental skill it targets (fine motor, gross motor, eye-hand coordination, sitting core strength, language, etc). The staff is friendly, quick to respond, and our daughter is always happy upon drop-off and pick-up. Highly recommend Parkwood.

It is left solely up to the teachers to discipline and handle these behaviors with no support. For example, kindergarten students regularly physically fight each other and some are still not required to be potty trained which results in many accidents in class. When management is called in, the child is rewarded for misbehaving. When behavior escalates and parents are informed, they scream at the management who then get mad at the teachers. If behavioral management isn't a strong skill, I would look somewhere else. Additionally, the management is comprised of four team members. One is amazing, one is competent, one refuses to do her job, to the detriment of the teachers and their curriculum, and one is too obsessed with drama and judgment towards her young, female employees to even realize she has a job. The amount of judging and degrading language I received or overheard from the director is appalling. If you believe she isn't judging you, think again! Unfortunately, jealously is a disease that McDowel cannot find a cure for. Lastly, the veteran teachers are wonderful and kind! My coteacher was a saint! You will be set up for success if paired with one of them. Unfortunately this is not true for all teachers. Many teachers in the younger rooms spend the whole day on their phones and offload all responsibilities onto their coteacher, regardless of if they're the teacher assigned to the room or not. Even during outdoor recess, the prekindergarten teachers will sit out of sight on the wall on their phones rather than make sure the kids are safe, leaving the safety of 24 children solely on you. It is extremely disheartening and dangerous that this is a known issue that is allowed to continue. All in all, there are clear issues that make this job unnecessarily hard, namely unresolved behavioral issues and mean staff members. Aside from the youngest member, do not trust the management. They will use any information you give them to make your work life harder.

There are age appropriate toys that do not look old or too worn. I consistently see money being put back into the property and the classrooms such as new ride on toys in the early toddler rooms and large touch screen computers in the preschool rooms. This location is definitely not convenient for us and, trust me, we have looked at several other daycare options that would be much closer to our home and work (more than once) but nothing ever compares to Primrose School of Leawood!
