I wanted a school where they would be loved and comforted, receive educational enrichment and really begin to grow into the little people they will become. It was also very important that they attend a school with a Christian based teaching and care philosophy. Bethany Lutheran fit the bill perfectly! The teachers and staff made me feel comfortable and secure leaving my children in their care and the smiles I see at pick up tell me they are truly enjoying their time at school. While at Bethany I have seen a dramatic leap in my children's development and I absolutely give credit to their fantastic teacher's who work with them to provide an edge; both with their educational and personal development. I attended this school in the 1980s, long before Yelp, but I still have some trauma/scarring from it, and I think that the administration needs to pay attention to things that it absolutely ignored back then. Rumor has it now that it doesn't, still, which is not atypical of education, but if admin can read this and do better, it should. Major emotional scarring can arise from attending school here as it was in the '80s. Best teachers: Mrs. Teal, Mr. Gratwick, the two French teachers and one French/Latin (Mrs. Mensch (sp?), art teachers Bay and Rosser. Worst teachers: Mr. Eldridge, Mrs. Teller, DiMaria/DeMarea (?), and Ms. McFadden, who was more into breeding dogs for a living than teaching 5th grade.* Questionable: Eisen (English), Harper (math), the creepy young science teacher Scott something.** The music teacher was good, but I was still a Jew who had to sing Christmas songs year after year. *Eldridge was a social climber who was more interested in hobnobbing with rich people than he was children's educations and yet somehow was middle school principal. When I was nearsighted and couldn't see the chalkboard he called me an airhead in front of other kids. Never considered that I literally couldn't see the board, and at age 10, I didn't know either! Dog breeder McFadden, same. Not attuned enough to think about eyesight as factor. DeMarea (?) was the crappy English teacher for 7th and 8th who said, "You want to start a new thought? Start a new paragraph." I learned everything I know today about writing from the public high school I attended with better teachers when I left Barstow. **Eisen was brilliant and a great teacher, and I learned a ton from her, but her disciplinarian ways were intense, and she literally taped some kids' mouths shut. They were terrible pompous kids who technically deserved it, but even for the '80s this was draconian. Mr. Harper was a great math teacher, but I was gifted in math, and because I picked up algebra, etc. from self-teaching and never had to "study" (who needs to study algebra? you get it or you don't; you solve for x) he told all the other kids, in front of me, that I was lying when I said I didn't study. WTAF? Not that it would have been okay if he told them behind my back. But REALLY?! Algebra is formulas. You don't need to "study" algebra. Once you click the formulas you're done. 20+ years later when I was taking the GRE, I had to re-teach myself algebra, and I did. It's not a daily-study memorization thing. Telling other kids I'm lying because I "get" math is NOT OKAY. ***Haves lived in Mission Hills in mansions, some with indoor pools. Have-lesses were me: I had everything any kid needs and wants--my own room, things I wanted for my bday gifts, never was hungry. We took vacations and had material things. But we were very much "wrong tracks" because we weren't society and didn't jet off to ski resorts and spas and Europe and live in mansions. Mr. Eldridge really catered to only the "haves" in an obvious way. As diversity and inclusion become fashionable topics of the day--too little, too late--I think it's important to note my experiences here, and I wish I had sooner. I'll forever be grateful to my parents that they gave me a choice about high school, and I was able to attend public school for "free" rather than the $5k annual tuition at the time for Barstow. Was public school perfect? Of course not, but for the thousands of dollars difference it was a no-brainer. And overall, the quality of teachers and administrators was actually better at public school. If parents are considering sending kids here, please observe very carefully and ask a lot of questions. If you're on the KS side, chances are still quite good that public school is better when weighing money, diversity, and quality of instruction/admin. Missouri? Possibly even the same.

I think what I like most about Barstow, having attended small schools nearly my entire educational…read morecareer, is its size. The students there are going to have grades with 30-50 kids, tops. One of the last junior classes I worked with had 40 students. As you are going to find at most elite private schools, there are a ton of students who love to learn and are dedicated to hard work. It doesn't hurt that it's a beautiful campus, conveniently located, with a good deal of tradition. Scott Hill, head counselor here, also happens to be awesome.

They allowed me to shift the days he's watched when they are closed for the day (for holidays and such). They provide daily reports on his eating, what he did and his mood. It provides insight for his mother and I to know how long his nap was that day, how much did he eat, etc. Kim and crew do wonderful. My son enjoys going there and has grown socially as a result. If pressed for a con of this place, I would say the food they eat isn't the best. They do follow state recommended standards but it does tend to be sugary and not the best stuff for kids. For 1 meal a day, I'm not that concerned. It's much more important to me to know that they care for their kids and take good care of them. And here they do just that.

The facility offers many features including an indoor pool, a huge 50M outdoor lap pool, water slides, diving boards, squash courts (my personal fav), racket ball courts, kids gym with rock climbing wall, basketball courts, indoor track, weight room, yoga studio, spinning studio, tennis courts, softball diamonds, soccer fields... Whew... That is just the athletic facilities. They also offer many other community related services such as pre-school, day care, child and adult education, self defense training, fine arts programming... etc... The JCC is truly a world-class facility and my corporate membership that costs ~$50 per month is a steal! Generally speaking, for such a large facility with so many members, the place never seems jam-packed with people like Life Time Fitness always seems to be. The longest that I've ever waited for a lane at the indoor pool is about 30 minutes. 95% of the time I dont even need to wait. I've never waited for a lane at the outdoor pool and I always am able to schedule a squash court. I hesitate to write this review because I dont want a mad-rush of new members to spoil my oasis... :-D The JCC is a truly great facility and a asset to the greater KC Area...

The staff are blatantly discriminatory and rude. They don't have any customer service skills and…read moredon't seem to want any. One of the staff members at the concession stand never addressed me, I had to ask if I could place an order. Even when she responded "yeah", she didn't look up. Once she placed my order and I handed her my debit card, she threw it back at me instead of handing it to me. She never said 'thank you', 'have a good day' or anything. It is very disheartening and I will not be returning where I don't feel welcome or respected. The Jewish Community Center is not following their stated values of inclusivity and community. Each time I have visited I've been faced with blatant discriminatory practices. The staff have been downright rude and appear to be very nonchalant when this concern has been brought to their attention. I will not be frequenting this place or spending my money here when the staff can't even give basic respect and kindness.

In those two weeks, my four year repeatedly told me her teachers were mean and she did not want to go to school. We had to drag her through the door crying. We witnessed other children also begging not to go into the classroom. The teachers did not greet us when we walked in at all, until I complained that no one was even saying hi to my child. They say they use conscious discipline but my child was put in timeout and threatened, and the director seemed clueless about the principles of Conscious discipline. When I picked my child up on April 2nd, she immediately told me that the part time teacher in the room had grabbed her "really hard and it really hurt". She put both hands on her hips when I asked her how she was grabbed. When I asked why, she self reported that she had gotten off her letter and was not listening and the teacher was upset. However, that night at bedtime I saw the bruises on both hips in the shape of fingers and thumbs. It took a few days for all the bruises to appear fully. I kept her home from school and demanded they check their cameras. They tried to say that they couldn't find any incidents. Eventually they were able to find the incident based on all the accurate details my 4 YEAR OLD was able to tell us. I watched it and it was concerning to say the least. The teacher chased after her, grabbed her on both hips and then held her under one arm squeezing her, brought her to the other side of the classroom and put her down in a chair and pointed in her face. You can tell how angry the teacher is on the video, you obviously cannot tell how hard she grabbed her. My child scratched her at this point trying to protect herself and was sent to the office. The school agreed that the teacher should not have picked her up like she did and she is "young and inexperienced". They had just hired her. But then instead of firing her they promoted her to full time teacher in that room. They kept insisting that the bruises did not come from the teacher and they think it's a coincidence. They sent me many screenshots of Google searches on how long it takes bruises to form. It had been 10 hours from the time she was assaulted to the time I noticed the bruises, plenty of time for a young fair skinned child to bruise. People can bruise immediately . They made several comments about how they don't think the bruises happened at their school and stories of other parents who had reported them and ENDED up losing their children. This felt like a threat, like they would do anything to protect themselves. Their decision to promote the teacher was very concerning and I ended up pulling her from their care. They also kept all of my money. I paid 1800$ on the first for the whole month and the two weeks prior and was told sorry you have to give a month's notice and was not refunded at all. My child is traumatized from this school and has ptsd symptoms. She can't even be in a daycare setting anymore because of this school, she just cries for her parents and feels unsafe. It is truly heartbreaking the damage these teachers caused. They should all be ashamed of themselves. I hope no other children here have had this happen but I would be shocked if it hasn't happened before or since. Don't take your children here.

The facility is safe, convenient and centered around the child. We've adored all his teachers and he loves going to school. My husband and I really appreciate the hours and, Premier doesn't have the typical spring break, holiday break or teacher in-service that would require us to find backup care. They also have fantastic activities and healthy food!
