The Twisted Thistle is in the middle of Old Kilpatrick and area of the village appears shabby but the TT is a modern bar/diner located in the shadow of the Erskine Bridge. The interior is very modern and kitchen is open where food prep can be viewed. It has a mix of tables for usual covers and open area with couches for bar adjacent for relaxed vibe. Both were reasonably busy but not overly so. Originally we ate here on a previous occassion as the Lusset ( a former old haunt) didn't do food any more - and sad to say it was very, very run down. However, that was to our benefit once we relocated to the TT. This trip around it was a late lunch / early dinner. I opted for chicken goujons and chilli dip with steak ciabatta as mains. Missus had the soup n sandwich deal. Our youngsters opted for the kids menu with soup and fish n chips for the wee fella and burger for the youngest lass. All were very happy with speed of service, quality of food and we all had a taste of each others grub. Every one agreed on very good value/taste and quality of meals as well as over all service. For me, the goujons were light and crispy and dip was very aromatic - not too sweet and not too spicy. The steak sandwich was cheapest on mains menu (typically tight) but the roll came with chunky steak sliced with onions and cheese. The ends were a little dry but the middle was moist and tasty. Potentially a little expensive for the location but the OK bunch do fancy themselves as a bit up market :) and it was reflected in the high quality of both grub and surroundings. The ambience for a quite quiet day was really good with some ladies lunching in the comfy seats and some lads propping up the bar area all lending to a good atmosphere. The place is very clean including the rest areas. Unknown to me from the previous visit, I spotted that there is a great function area to the rear, so family events could be catered for too - a nice option to learn about. I would like to visit on a weekend evening to check it out then as it's close enough to home to have a relaxed night out and not need to worry about an extended trek home. Plenty of upcoming events with music / DJ advertised such as Hallowe'en, etc. so another reason to nip down on a weekend and TV monitor was on wall with sound down so may be a good spot for watching any big games? In summary; reasonably priced when quality of experience is accounted for. Very very easily the top spot for eats in the Clydebank area. We got three courses for £11, served a lovely waiter with (what I hope was) a cheesy fake Italian accent. I got mushrooms to start, creamy chicken pasta for main and finished with waffles. Everything was delicious!!! I was stuffed and chuffed ;). My Mum also enjoyed her meal, she had garlic bread, fish and chips and ice cream. I'm not a big drinker and Mum was driving to I had diet coke (with unlimited refills) and Mum had tea. The best part was the music they played! Elvis, Dusty Springfield, The Beatles and lots of others that I love. The bathrooms were nice too :). So my views of Frankie and Benny's have definitely changed and I will no doubt return.

The location is an area of Glasgow I don't really venture, and I'm not sure how you'd get there without a car. We had friends visiting so took that as the perfect excuse to book in for their Tuesday night dinner where they also offer a 2-1-2 deal (2 courses for two people with a bottle of wine for £30). We were a little early for our booking but were seated quickly and had our pick of tables. The restaurant space isn't overly large and you get a great view of the head chef putting the finishing touches on the dishes at the pass right in front of you which certainly made it a little more interesting than a standard restaurant. We were going to get the 2-1-2 deal but none of us really fancied drinking that much, so we just went for the set menu instead (2 courses for £17 or 3 for £20). I had the scallop (£4 supplement) and the shellfish risotto for main. Menu descriptions are a little short but I'm pretty happy to be surprised. We were served a butternut squash velouté to start which was lovely, a nice little portion and topped with truffle oil. I loved my starter - a generous portion of scallops, beautiful presentation and that serious wow-factor taste that I always get so excited for. Main was a lovely shellfish risotto which was unlike any I've had before - it had a lovely, generous mix of seafood and was very rich. It did get a little overwhelming by the end but I really can't complain - it was a really high standard of food that really impressed me. We decided not to get dessert. While I wouldn't say portion sizes were huge, I was totally stuffed after two courses so we just got the bill. Our only issues on the night were the service which was a little slow and haphazard - it took a while for my friend to be able to order her wine, and it took a couple of goes to get the card machine to pay the bill. These little issues didn't affect the night though and the food was so impeccable that it's still a 5-star from me. I'd go back in a heartbeat as I enjoyed it so much. The bill worked out to be around £60 per couple with drinks etc which I thought was quite reasonable.

To start I had Smoked ham hough sandwich with a waldorph salad. This was unusual, like a ham terrine, with bread in the middle and a very thin piece of pastry on the outside. The flavours worked really well together, and the crisp apple, walnut and blue cheese salad complemented the dish well. For main I had pork fillet with sweet potato, courgette, paprika and salami. I would never have thought to have all these flavours in one dish, but they were the perfect combo. There was a nice smoky hint from the paprika, however this wasn't overpowering. This was a good sized portion, the tiny sweet potato balls were light and perfectly cooked. In the middle of my main the manager asked if I wanted another glass of wine, however I was trying to be well behaved and refrain as I was heading into town for a wee shop. Through past experience wine+shopping = some questionable purchases!! However he must have seen it pained me to say no, so he brought me another glass of white which he felt would go with my pork dish, and this was on the house!!! So lovely. We had a really enjoyable afternoon at 111 Nico's. I can appreciate the manager may not have been as attentive if the restaurant was at full capacity, however he appeared to be very skilled and eager for the restaurant to do well. I do love the background to the restaurant too, and the training academy that offers so many people the opportunity to be learning new skills and produce food to a very high standard. The garlic bread that was served with it was extremely bland, people need to hit the garlic button, too many places don't go for it with garlic bread. Recently had garlic rye bread in Berlin and it was like being hit in the tongue with garlic bulbs (that's a good thing) St Louis has a really decent beer selection, Williams bros lager and Joker IPA on tap. As well as every William's bottle you can think of. Wine list is also far from shabby. They get a real mix of clientele, oldies, young uns, inbetweeners like me, people drinking, eating, battering into cakes and pastries. Friday and Saturdays they have live music which isn't intrusive and you can still hear your dining, drinking partner. I'm sure I'll be back as I said girlfriend loves it and it's very close to my flat. But as I'm moving soon I can't see myself going out of my way, certainly not for the food. Then we discovered Cafe Circa which was miraculously still serving bacon rolls in the afternoon. Yippee!! The rolls were those crispy ones which I adore. We finished it off with a big chunk of chocolate cake which was perfectly proportioned. They now have an offer called a "friendship slice" where if you and a friend both order the same cake it costs only a little extra for the additional slice rather than double. The best thing about this quirky little find is the service. The guy that served us couldn't have been more helpful and was one of the smiliest waiters I have ever seen. We felt like we'd been regulars for years getting the VIP treatment. We also got a little card which offered a discount for when we next visited. We checked in right when the lounge opened early in the AM so it was obviously clean and food was fresh. This is a considerably large space with various seating areas and a quiet corner designated (should you want that). Food wise, it's a decent offering at breakfast. You'll find more bread-based foods and a couple hot items - good enough for a hungry traveler. I can't comment on alcoholic beverages as I didn't partake on this visit.
