Or you can do MTWTH if you're able. The teacher seems skilled in martial arts and is good at commanding respect from the kids. He should hire a receptionist though, because sometimes he can't teach the class (which is already short at 45 minutes) because he's hung up with talking to a parent who has a question or needs to pay for something. Before you sign up, be sure to ask what all these additional fees will be. It's not just $165 a month. Each belt test costs more money, there's more than one weapon to buy, sparring gear which is about $400, and a new blue uniform you're forced to get after the white one has only been worn a few months. And if you want to cancel, you have to notify three months in advance, and I guess still continue to pay for those three months whether your child attends or not. Another complaint I have is that it seems like the kids are advanced to the next belt levels too quickly. The tests to go to the next level are too easy. Some kids fail at something (like board breaking for instance) multiple times in a row, and are still allowed to get their next belt. This issue is likely true of not just this place, but all American martial arts places, which care more about protecting children's self-esteem than actually ensuring they have mastered the skills. In my opinion, it would be better if the kids had to stay at a belt level for a year each, rather than being rushed to black belt in 3-4 years just so the kids can brag "I'm a black belt!" without being able to win a fight. Two belt levels later, the kids have forgotten the forms and moves they learned two belt levels ago. Review of old moves would be nice. Does a black belt only know black belt moves? Do they still remember what they learned as a white belt, yellow belt, orange belt, etc.? The kids are also expected to memorize several words and phrases in Korean, which is difficult to do when the kids are all shouting out their possibly incorrect pronunciations at once. I think it would help them learn if the words were written out on a black/white board or displayed permanently on a wall poster, written both with the correct spelling and the phonetic spelling (because some of these words are not spelled the way they sound), so kids can see what they're saying instead of just imitating the kid next to them. Each individual kid should have to say the words so the teacher can hear their mistakes and correct them. It's impossible to hear who is saying what when they all shout at the same time.

My son's been going for three months now and I've seen a huge improvement in his coordination and memory, he's got a longer attention span, and he's not afraid to speak up for himself. From his very first class, they were teaching him important values such as: 1) how to stay calm and concentrate when there's chaos around you 2) how to defend yourself from physical harm 3) how to set clear goals and work towards them All the instructors have mastered how to correct the children while still keeping the class fun and light. I really had no…read moreidea what to expect because I've never done anything like this before, let alone how my body would handle it considering I've only been regularly exercising for the last 2 months or so. First off, while this place could easily be a set for Karate Kid, there isn't that sense of machismo or ultra-competitiveness that you'd think you'd encounter here. Their style isn't so much focused on self-defense or sport (but the movements that are taught can obviously be used in such a way) but much more about learning about your body and how it moves through space, and how to leverage your breathing to make those movements easier and more effective. When doing kicks and strikes, even though there's lots of shouting, the attitude of the instructors is not to challenge but to recognize that we're doing something that's meant to be fun, so there's lots of smiling and laughter. The business is a non-profit and the founder and several instructors are LGBTQ, which all contributes to an inclusive and approachable environment. Plan to wear comfortable workout clothes (without zippers so you don't damage the mats) and also plan to kick off your shoes and socks when you arrive. You'll also be expected to step onto/wipe your bare feet on a mat that has a vinegar and water solution on it, just to help keep things clean. The session started off with about 30 minutes of intense (to me) stretching. The movements go pretty quick, and if you're as poorly coordinated and out of shape as I am, the instructors will helpfully point out alternate movements and positions, and will remind you to only go as far as your body will let you. This is followed by a few minutes of quiet meditation. Once you're loosened up and have gotten your heart rate up, the instructors will start walking you through some basic stances, then some kicks (first just through the air, then against someone holding a big pad/shield), then elbow strikes, then you'll start to put it all together, and by the end of the 90 minute session you'll be doing flying side kicks! In our session, one person did sustain a minor (I hope!) injury when not landing quite right after a kick, we all stopped and the instructors were right there to make sure she was alright. The session ends with a quick sit on the mat to talk a bit more about what was learned and how everyone's feeling/cover any extra questions that anyone may have. Bottom line: if you're an adult that wants to learn more about martial arts, and wants an approachable, inclusive, non-intimidating experience that doesn't pressure competitiveness, this is the place to go!

The structure and constructive abilities hes learned here have been influential in his life. He has me so much growth as a person and as a young man under the guidance of the school. He loved the school and now with the addition of master shim. He seems to love it even more . Good master shim and master Kim or a great asset to any child's development. Here at world champion taekwondo many of the children can learn confidence in their ability, self control, and of course have a lot of fun and make new friends. The school now is a bit crowded due to the closure of the other location. But on the upside we do now have 2 masters 1 which is a grandmaster in the same location. Mr. Loeffler is excellent with children and treats everyone with respect. He has a very positive attitude and instills discipline and hard work while still managing to keep a smile on his face after a full day of classes. He has a true gift, and I feel lucky to have him be a part of our community. The prices are perfect for our budget, at $35 for ten 1-hour lessons. The classes are also very flexible, which is great if something unexpected comes up at the last minute. If you miss a class you can make it up on any of the other days it's offered and at any location. If we can't make the Tuesday night class at Mt. Scott, we can simply show up on a different day at the Montevilla or East Portland community centers and take the class then. There's free testing once a month, and Mr. Loeffler helps everyone make the progress they are after. Some people practice a lot and go to classes multiple times a week, and those people can be a Green Belt after one year and a Brown Belt after two years. Most people go at a slower pace, and it's totally up to the individual. It's a great experience for kids, and gets them away from video games for a little while. As an adult, my wife and I have found it to be the perfect exercise routine, and a lot more fun than going to the gym. I couldn't recommend it more!

When I was 17, I was touched inappropriately/in a sexual way by one of the masters here during a training. While many students witnessed it, the master faced no disciplinary actions. The company refused to share CCTV footage, so the situation was unable to be escalated. Do not send your daughters here. My parents spent around $20,000 on my tuition here, because I was a student for more than ten years. We were disgusted with what happened.

He's taught my daughter how to respect others and herself. The values he's teaching are so important for today's young people and I've seen such a difference in my daughter.
