NOTE: This review is only for the hibachi experience. I've had several hibachi dinners in the past and have compared Todoroki to some of the best I've had in the city. Unfortunately, when it comes to taste, Todoroki wasn't all it was hyped up to be. Their hibachi dinner was filling and the dinner show was typical to standard shows I've seen in the past (SPOILER ALERT: the knife wielding theatrics, egg bouncing on the Santoku knife, onion volcano, yadda, yadda, yadda...). I expected good food but nothing really stood out for me here. The seasoning for their meats and seafood were bland. The rice was tough and overcooked. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium but when I received my steak, it was cooked medium well. It ended up tasting dry, tough, and flavorless. For the amount my husband and I paid for four dinners, it just wasn't worth the cost. Very concerned about the hygiene of this place. The tables were uncleaned with crumbs leftover from the previous day (we were the first customers on that day) and the waitress was filling the water jug from what looked like a bathroom sink! We were also not welcomed when we arrived and had to wait for a while until the waitress (the only waitress working at that time) to arrive to work. 5 stars. In a word - GREAT! Checked this place out on a Tues during lunch.... had hibachi. My colleague and I had the entire room to ourselves for the majority of our meal. The chef was pretty decent....albeit a slight language barrier. The server was always nearby and very attentive.... accomodating, even. I am a HUGE fan on the ginger sauce served by these shops. I asked if I could buy some and the server said she would check into it. Well, she came back with a small container and said that it was on-the-house! Well... you coulda bought me for a nickel! The majority of items on the sushi menu contain cream cheese, are drizzled in mayo, and/or are deep fried... not my thing personally. Warm sake tasted pretty rancid. Waitress was not all that attentive or friendly. Finally, the ambience was lacking as there was construction being done during dinner service and the bathroom smelled of mildew. They also charge $10 for certain booths which I find regrettable. I hate to bash a place, but eating here put me out of commission for a couple of days so I'd recommend you steer clear. read more

Just tried today for the first time and hands down one of the best hibachi places in the north-shore. Hostess was so friendly and sweet and always checked in on you and asked if you needed anything. The man cooking the hibachi was hilarious and made the whole experience! Food is a 10/10 and worth every cent we paid. Would only ever go back to this place. This was one of my go-to places for an inexpensive all you can eat sushi and when I was in the mood it was a good place for cook table hibachi. I have not been there is a while. They were kind of sporadic with dining during covid(I totally get that). I went in over the weekend and they had remodeled the restaurant with a more brighter feel. The normal sit down dining kind of caters more to the college crowd and the slightly modified all you can eat menu. The old all you could eat menu was more limitless while the new menu is more of a prefix sort of deal. They do cut you off at a point, but I would say for the general meal there is enough to fill you up. This weekend I decided to order off the hibachi menu, but not do the cook table experience. That is more of a group thing and I was there by myself. I decided to get a sushi role and the filet hibachi. The hibachi comes with a soup and salad and the main course comes with a veggie stir-fry and fried rice so quite a bit of food. Here is where things when kind of sideways. Almost as soon as the waitress took my order they were back at my table with my main course. I looked at her a little funny and asked where the soup/salad and sushi was. She said it was still coming and the meal was already ready and she was trying to be fast. I said something like "this meal is going to be at least $40 and I am not in a hurry, and by the time I get the soup, salad, and sushi the plate is going to be cold." She did apologize and said she could take it back, which is probably what I should have done. I felt hurried with meal when it all came out. Waitress forgot to bring a dish for soy sauce wit the sushi. I am thinking she might have been a little flustered about the meal and really didn't come back till I was done. Which also meant I didn't get any refills on my water or tea. Apart from the meat hardly being warm the fried rice was under cooked and didn't really have much flavor. The veggies were ok. I have been going to Todoroki for many years now and this was not my best dining experience. Went for an early NYE hibachi dinner. First time and I suspect first of many yet to come. Fabulous hibachi. Great food. Fresh, perfectly prepared and a fun presentation!! I came here on a Sunday at 5:30 to finally try the AYCE I've heard so much about. For $27, it is a bit pricey, but it pretty much is the price of three rolls, which I can easily tackle. We were seated immediately since the place was almost empty. The AYCE menu comes with appetizers, nigiri, rolls, and dessert. The lunch AYCE ($17) comes with slightly less than the dinner AYCE. I ordered the gyoza, fried scallops, and grilled squid from the appetizer list. This might be a coincidence, but they sent over shumai to me and another table even though none of us ordered them. The gyoza and scallops came out very fast and both were delicious. The grilled squid came out after I had finished the rolls that I had also ordered, but still delicious nonetheless. For the rolls, I sampled the rainbow roll, todoroki roll, volcano roll, and spider roll. I'm not a picky sushi person, so I don't have any complaints. The sauce on the spider roll was a perfect blend of savory and sweet. I then ordered a few nigiri pieces and I was impressed by how fresh and soft the fish was. For dessert, we had mochi (maximum one per person), which wasn't the best but I doubt Todoroki made it themselves. The two tables next to me complained to the waitresses about how slow their dishes came out. Sushi takes time to prepare because it's all made fresh! I thought the preparation time was comparable to other AYCE places. One of the waitresses was very kind and handled the situation very well. I rarely ever wish that Yelp has a 0 stars options but this is one of those days I wish I can actively tell people never to come here. The first time I was here, I quite enjoy my chirashi don. It took a while (despite not being too crowded). Guess I can only blame myself for not seeing it coming. I reached Todoroki at about 7 and after some time placed my order for a lucky Uni and Gyoza at 7.08pm. I was told my food should take about 15 minutes. And boy was I in for a wait. Not quite sure if they are using a different unit of measure for time but my food came out at 0750. That meant that it took 42 minutes. Maybe a minute to them is 3 instead. Throughout, no one came to tell me that it would take longer. For the price point, I hope the food is worth the wait for other people for it certainly was not for me. My gyoza is cold and soggy, to the point of super chewy skin. Clearly they made it first and waited for the sushi to be prep without considering how long things may take. Clearly in need of staff who actually will check on your food and give you accurate estimations. No thanks to them, my entire day is ruined as my time-sensitive work did not work. I would have went out the door and went over to Joy Yee or something to get my dinner. Mind you, all I was ever offer was water twice. Water... Sure. I am in a rush and now wasted my Sunday at work because Todoroki cannot tell you how long your food would take. Did I also add that the sushi was made really badly? **INTRO** I am usually not the type to leave a reviews for things if it isn't for something positive because I understand that mistakes can happen. In fact, I don't usually use Yelp, but I was so upset with the customer service that I received for the party of two tonight that I created an account to leave this review. I actually used to come around once a quarter pre-COVID. While my experiences during those previous encounters weren't the best either, I would say tonight's experience just tops it all. ________________________________________________________________________________ **POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE** Just like what everyone else have been talking about in the reviews, I 100 percent agree that the customer service is really, really lacking. I was here for the all-you-can-eat sushi because I wanted to celebrate a friend's official in-person quarter experience. Though I knew their all-you-can-eat isn't the best in terms of quality, this was one of the very few sushi options in downtown Evanston that I knew of. _______________________________________________________________________________ **LONG LONG WAIT TIME** My friend and I waited a total of around 2 HOURS and 30 minutes for the food to come out (at least for all the order to come out). He ordered around 40 pieces, and I ordered around 27 pieces. If you are bored and are just looking to spend like 3 hours people-watching/eating with your annoyed friend and don't mind the sub-par food, then honestly go for it! You have the freedom to do whatever with your time, I guess. We were waiting pretty patiently up until the hour mark until another waitress came to ask if we're ready order the second round. We were pretty dumbfounded at this but decided there must have been some sort of miscommunication. While we pointed out that we do not think we've received everything, the waitress insisted that we did, reciting our order, and we thought maybe we were mistaken until we referenced our picture after she left. When we brought this up, they seemed pretty skeptical but told us that we can order it for the second round-- I suppose we are expected to have extra hours to just happily wait around sucking our thumbs. And so we did. We submitted our second order and were told by the waitress that this should not take too long since it was the servers who were overstaffed currently, not the chefs. Okay, that's fine. Yet another halfish hour passed, and I called over the waitress for the 3rd time or something, inquiring about the food. She tells me that she'll ask the chef, but she comes back with the answer that they aren't sure when the food will arrive. Noticing that I was clearly getting a bit annoyed, she asked if I wanted to speak to the manager, and so I do. _______________________________________________________________________________ **HIGHLIGHT** I tell her about the long wait time and how we didn't even receive the all the first round of orders, which was why we submitted the second one. She tells me that sometimes the chefs don't bring everything on your order out because they know that people can't finish everything and don't want them to be charged extra for the leftovers. I mean, okay? EXCUSE ME, what? So you're not going to give me everything I order because you don't think I can finish it? Because you're concerned that I'll have to pay extra? OKAY, GEEZ, THANKS. I am so grateful that you think I cannot make good eating judgements? I didn't really expect to hear that coming from the manager. How does one even make that judgement call for individual customers? _______________________________________________________________________________ **CONCLUSION** I understand the servers were understaffed and that things were pretty busy tonight. I understand that sometimes miscommunication can happen. But I wish that the staff could have been honest in admitting their mistake. I wish that they could have approached us with a more sincere apology rather than an unreasonable excuse. If reviewers are consistently saying that they were highly disappointed with the customer service, and the persisting problem is the understaffing, then, perhaps, the reorganization of the business management structure and ordering system should be administered. My father orders from here at least once a week because he absolutely loves the kani su roll. I also love their food because of how fresh the seafood is. I tried their sashimi regular set and everything was incredibly tasty and fresh. I ate the whole thing in less than a minute probably. I also really enjoyed their udon, the soup base was creamy with rich flavoring and generous ingredients. The noodles were cooked perfectly as well. The seaweed salad and kani su are also very fresh and tasty. The miso soup was fairly typical, nothing too special. The sesame balls for dessert were disappointing because they were quite cold and tasted stale when we ate them, even though we did not wait long to have them. The popcorn chicken was actually inedible it was so hard and flavorless, I'm not sure what happened to those. The big take away is that they do seafood and soup really well with fresh ingredients but you might want to stay away from that chicken. read more

They were excellent to work with and extremely accommodating. They were very gracious and helped us with the planning. Everyone in our party of 60 people was very pleased. Also, the BYOB option saved us a lot of money on drinks! I STRONGLY recommend Todoroki if you are planning a large event. This is an alright sushi place in Evanston. For the 25$ all you can eat sushi, it's a pretty good value, but the sushi is just okay quality. We were able to reserve the back room for a large group and do byob which was a good large group activity that I would recommend.
