I was pretty stoked to try more Surinamese food while chillin' in the Netherlands. Tokoman is a cheap, no frills Surinamese fast food joint with multiple locations throughout Amsterdam. They boast an array of island flavors at very affordable prices that make it seem like a complete steal for university students. I was roaming around the city and decided to take a stab at Tokoman. Inside feels like a Chinese takeout restaurant with everything situated on heating trays. They offer a great lunch special where you can get a sandwich which consists of your meat of choice squished between a baguette for as low as €5. I opted for a sandwich plus the Surinamese egg roll which was GIGANTIC and clearly a meal made for itself. Food was decent at beast but you do get a lot of bang for your buck. If you're with friends, you'll likely be able to try more of their options since you wouldn't get full off just one dish. Overall, it's a good spot to grab an easy take-out lunch but I'd opt for a more sit-down homey restaurant if you really want to enjoy this type of cuisine. read more

I was looking for Surinamese food and happened to come across this take-out restaurant. I was so excited! The food is all prepared. You point to what you want, and they spoon it out into the take out container. Some people ate inside of the restaurant, I took my portion to go. I ordered a little bit of everything! I tried the beef, chicken, and pork, and 2 types of noodles - skinny and wide, and a pinch of fried rice, and 3 types of veggies including the long string beans - cut up. I was impressed with the flavors and the sauces. I would quickly describe it as Caribbean mixed with Indonesian/Asian flavors. My favorite was the beef and pork. I don't know what it was called. The gentleman working there was very friendly and answered all my questions. Next time I am in Amsterdam, I will definitely return for a delicious, Surinamese meal. read more

I absolutely loved this place, so many veggie options that I can eat something here at least 4 days of a week. I ordered a veggie big box and got Brussels sprouts, broccoli and spicy green beans with fried rice. If you cannot handle even medium spicy, do not even try anything spicy at this place. Everything was well cooked and prices are really affordable. What I do not like is that they microwave the food which in my personal view, kills all the nutrients. But, it is still very healthy food compared to other typical Indian food restaurants. The good thing is that if you have a busy schedule, you can be out in 10-15 mints and eat on your way or on the boat, like I did. read more

I needed food pretty badly but didn't have a lot of money at that moment. When I found this little joint I was tickled. The prices are really great for Amsterdam & the portions are actually quite okay. I knew it was a winner when I saw the queue of locals. I didn't know what was what but the woman helped me & was very patient & friendly. I had Chinese noodles with some kind of bbqed pork & mixed vegetables for 6.50€ & a sparkling pineapple soda. Total: 10€. Both choices were great... though the soda was a bit sweet, it tasted very nice. I would definitely return to try other things. It makes sense that they have to microwave the food. Food sitting on warmers for hours dries out & not only loses its freshness & flavor, but also looks terrible. So I am assuming it's a cooler, like in a butcher shop, instead. ..hense the foil at night it's actually quit brilliant. They don't need a refrigerator in the back to carry everything to & fro everyday. So in their little space, they can offer many options & the flavors are better. Very efficient! Anyone with food intolerances should beware, however, that they use one set of tongs or one spoon per row. So if you order something from the middle or closest to the glass, it will be served with the same utensil as that closest to the server, etc. Not a big deal for the majority, but definitely not for food allergy or intolerance folks. Okay, so the food was really very good. But -1 star because holy heck was this place slow. There was only one woman working the counter at lunch time, and even with just two people in front of me, it took more than 10 minutes to get my food. And this is buffet-type food that's microwaved in a box, i.e. fast food. It just wasn't that fast. But still, a nice product, and I get why they're popular. I downed my box of food pretty quickly. Smart of them to put the meat and veggies on top of the noodles, so you gotta do your work if you wanna get to the carbs ;). Good cheap lunch spot in an otherwise not so cheap place. read more

Stopped here for a quick snack. Asked the lady at the counter for a recommendation because I'm inexperienced with Surinamese food. She wasn't very helpful and her attitude was a bit off-putting. Ordered the steamed pork bun (which looks much like a Chinese da bao) to-go. It was packaged nicely. Taste: Meat was pretty good (pork had a nice flavor) but the amount of filling was too little compared to the amount of bun (especially for 2.50 euros). Bottom Line: Perhaps their entrees are tastier, but would rather try a different Surinamese place instead. read more

I was 4 things when I stumbled across this place: * Hungry. * Seeking my vegetables. * Lured in by an attractive girl I saw working there (September 2015). * Fresh off the boat 'or as good as' from London not knowing much about anything.. I was served by the gentlemen and I was confused on what cuisine it was given it read Caribbean everywhere and everything but wasn't what I'd consider "Caribbean". So that was an education for me as I ate my dinner that night. I remember I had a carb' too, of boiled rice, and I had my vegetables, and there was something I ordered that, I didn't care for, so I honestly never finished it, I tried it, ate what I could - It looked really healthy (I'd give it that); and was brown and sticky and crunchy but, not for me. That was the first time in my obviously sheltered life I had ever heard of the Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean. It was with a little difficulty getting what I wanted; something to do with having to order something else with it but they either cut me some slack or; it was that thing I tried because I'd never seen before then and decided I didn't care for it?/ IDK, but I remember service policy has much to be desired considering it was a hassle and a favour I think to get what I wanted because it wasn't the right order 'or whatever'. This place is the bomb. Awesome sandwiches and food options at such a reasonable price especially in a rather touristy area that everywhere up-charges drastically in. If your traveling in a budget or even just want a great sandwich that isnt the most typical maybe this is your place. I had the curried egg sandwich which was great had some nice acidic pickled veggies in it with just a hint of heat. read more

Me and my friends saw this place as we were walking around the area, I was craving for Asian food and with the cheap price it was inviting. But oh boy, it's a mistake! The food taste old and recycled, the rice is dry and old as well. The service was the worse I've experienced in the area. I tried this place after the two Indonesian restaurants nearby were closed. I ended up with a Wokbox, with noodles, tofu, and vegetables. Everything was tasty and pretty cheap. The noodles were thin and narrow, a bit like a Ramen noodle, and the seasoning was good and slightly spicy. The tofu was marinated and sauteed, and I chose the Asian vegetables. Generally a decent place for a quick bite good for take out. read more

I went there with a group of my friends as tourists roaming around trying to find something different to eat. When we saw the place it look like a good place to eat because of the selection and the cheap price but I couldn't have been more wrong. The rice tasted old as if it was refrigerated and just microwaved but what was worse was when I got the egg curry the egg tasted spoiled and the worker refused to give me a replacement other than another egg. The customer service was the worst I have experienced, never have I been more insulted than how the worker treated not only me but some of my other friends. I wish I could rate this lower than 1 start because it was a horrible experience. I will never recommend this place and will continue to share my experience with others to make sure they don't step inside that food chain again. read more

I stopped in here because I needed a quick filling not-too-expensive dinner from a place that takes credit cards. I had a good meal, and I would eat here again. There was a line but it moved along, even with only two people handling orders. The guy was helpful and didn't seem to mind that I am a foreigner in need of direction, in English. I had a wokbox with tofu, and since this counts as vegetarian, it came with 2 extra vegetables, for €6,95. I was a little concerned when they heated it in something that looks like a microwave, but it was really good, not dried out. The other employee actually brought it to me which was nice an unexpected for fast food. So I was surprised to see other reviews that were negative about the service. Maybe the restaurant read those reviews and improved. read more

The service is terrible, the female employees are rude and act like you're doing them a favor. There's one guy who works there who is nice (I think he's the only male employee). The food is good, but dealing with those negative employees give me pause. read more

We stumbled upon this place as we walked around Amsterdam Chinatown/Redlight district. Not knowing what Suriname food was, we went inside. We learned that Suriname food was very similar to Indonesian food. We ordered some food to go and were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. The price was quite cheap as well. read more
