While the doctor is great, the office staff is not. I received a voicemail today that my co-pay was late. My appointment was back in April and I received my first statement dated 7/31/2026 with a due date of 8/30/2026. I was further informed that a $50 late fee had been added to my account but they could remove it if settled in the next couple of days. Well it was settled and I am now looking for a new eye doctor. $50 late fee after two days, there is a nine day grace period. Check the laws. read more

I believe Dr.Castagna is a competent optometrist who tries to do the best for his patients. The office staff is another story...lazy, incompetent and rude when questioned. I have had several issues and the staff lied about the details of the problem and refused to make things right. read more

I do not recommend Tolland Eye Care. First, I was given a contact lense fitting without being asked if I wanted one, and without being told that my insurance didn't cover it. I was completely broke at the time and paying for it was way over my budget. Then, when I came back the next time for a follow-up, I figured it couldn't hurt to at least ask if I could get an extra sample or two given the circumstances. I expected the answer would be no, but this seemed like an innocent question, especially given that I never consented to the service in the first place. Before being able to tell the doctor about the initial consent issue, he interrupted me, made false assumptions based on the snippets of my intended statement that he bothered to allow me to say, and then proceeded to give me a condescending lecture on how services cost money. Obviously services cost money! I don't expect anyone to work for free. What I expect is to be asked if I want a service before being required to pay it. What I expect is not being lectured on false assumptions that were made based on statements that were left incomplete because I kept being interrupted. Had he bothered to let me speak, he might have heard about how I was not only not told that my insurance didn't cover it, but not even asked if I wanted the service. Regardless of whether or not it would have changed the outcome had he allowed me to speak, I did not appreciate the interruptions, assumptions, and condescension. Between the doctors rudeness and the unexpected charges for a service I never consented to, I can not recommend Tolland Eye Care, and I will not be returning. read more

The worst experience I've ever had at an opticians and I've been wearing glasses 35 years. I was asked to sit down and wait for an "optical stylist" after I arrived seeking new glasses. After about a half hour of waiting, the last ten minutes or so with me being the only person in the store, there was not one staff member out front. When a person did emerge I asked if they had forgotten me. She asked me what I was there for. I said somewhat startled that I was waiting to purchase some glasses. She retreated into the back room where for the next five minutes a loud male voice berated someone or some people about job performance. Of course doing this loudly enough that I could hear was pretty poor performance as well. A female clerk finally came out of the back room and waited on me. She was helpful enough but was very forceful about trying to upsell me things I was not interested in such as higher cost frames and the "very best" lens coating for 90 some odd dollars. She told me at the time that the frames were in stock and to give them two weeks to arrive. After two weeks I called and was told the frames were not in because "they were on back order". This was a lie because the Optical Stylist had specifically checked at the time to see if they were in stock. I asked when they would be in and was told they could not give me a specific date but I could rest assured they would call me when they arrived. Three weeks after my initial visit I called to see if my frames were in and was told no that there was a delay because the lenses were being shipped to the store and then they had to be shipped to the factory where the frames were made. Uh...what? When could expect them to be done? They could not give me a specific date but I could rest assured they would call me when they came in. Four weeks after my intial visit I called to see if my frames were in and was told no. It seems the factory had cut my lenses too small and every time they tried to install them at the store they fell out. (I thought they had been sent to the factory for assembly?) They had to be sent back but there was a "super rush" on them. What did that mean, I asked. "It means the lenses keep falling out of the frames..." HONESTLY, I got that part what does "SUPER RUSH" mean. When can I expect them. She said she had no idea. Six weeks after my initial visit I returned to the store with the intention of demanding my money back if they frames had not come in. Low and behold, they had finally arrived. Why was I not called? It seems there was a few days previous but the clerk was "unable to leave a message". Odd considering they were given my cell phone number and my voice mail never fails. Poor service, poor excuses, and a complete lack of professionalism and knowledge by the staff make this a place to avoid. read more

The office staff is very poor. Requests for help are ignored, phone messages are not returned. I have been seen by Dr. Castagna for years but now live 90 minutes away. I will not drive that far to get simple questions answered that could be done over the phone. I would be surprised if he knew the problems but he should since it is impacting his business. read more

I have been to Tolland Eye Care three times. The doctor himself is great, but the office staff leave a lot to be desired. I was there most recently in September 2020. I specifically asked to make sure my entire bill was paid before I left, and I was assured that it was. I then ordered contact lenses from them, in an effort to support a small local business, but was informed that I had a $75 balance that they had added to my bill after I left. I asked that the office manager call to explain, but I did not hear from her. I received a bill for the $75 in December and called to question it. The office manager Sarah told me that this was a fee that should have been added when I was there, but was added after I left by mistake. She insisted that she had called me to discuss this, which she had not. She agreed to follow up and call back to let me know if they could waive the fee. She did not call back, and I received another bill. I then called again and found out that she had been let go for her poor customer service. Even though this was handled poorly, they still want me to pay the $75 fee. At this point, I told them I would pay the fee but would not be back. I would not recommend going to Tolland Eye Care. While the doctor is great, the office staff make it not worth the hassle. I'm sure there are local eye doctors who have good office staff. read more

I had a lingering case of conjunctivitis and they were able to get me an appointment on the same day. The staff is friendly and Dr. Thornton is as kind as they come. I moved to town 17 months ago and will be a customer of Tolland Eye Care for life. read more

I don't feel moved to review much but both of us felt that the office was run efficiently and cheerfully. I went here because my eye doctor retired, and this place was close to home. My first experience with Tolland Eye Care was an eye exam with one of their doctors and it was good, but I was prescribed contacts for my eyes that were too strong and caused me to have migraines. I called the office to tell them the contacts were not working and caused me to have these headaches. Unfortunately that put the staff in complete confusion, after 20 minutes on the phone I was able to get a test pair to pick up. After a week of wearing those contacts I called to let them know they worked and I needed my prescription updated. They made it seem like they understood me perfectly, but they hadn't. When I received my prescription in the mail it was still the wrong prescription. I called today after getting the wrong prescription, and got attitude while talking to one of the secretaries. I was told that I never called to finalize my prescription. The woman was so incredibly rude on the phone, I was completely flabbergasted. Once I get my correct prescription from them, I will no longer deal with this office. Their customer service is absolutely terrible, and I have never had to go through so much trouble to get my actually prescription right. Save your eyes and your money and find another eye doctor to go to! read more

They wrote out the wrong contact prescription unbeknownst to me. I ordered lenses from somewhere else and didn't know they were incorrect until I put in my eyes and then too late to return hem so I was stuck with them. Tolland eye care refused to make things right so now I have to pay for a second Box of lenses. read more

This is the WORST place I have ever been to. First, they didn't order my contacts when they should have; so that they weren't covered on my insurance. Basically what should have been free; I ended up paying $200. Then, I ordered glasses with transition lenses, low and behold; I get my glasses in, but there's one little problem - THEY DON"T TRANSITION. Now i have to go back there again to have them fix this problem too. I'm so fed up witih this place, I am never going back. read more

I found a pair I fell in love with however they told me they would be ready in two weeks so I called them to see if they were in yet and they told me they would call me back they never did so I went over their and then they told me next week,well the same thing happened, they told me next week again. I would refer Tolland Eye Care to anyone. My daughter has had severe eye issues-blurriness, double vision, and seeeing black spots- since last October. When it first began in October Dr. Castagna came in on his own time to see us because he knew how serious it could be. Since then he has been there for us as soon as we have problems.His office staff and nurses are all great as well.
