I grew up in the same area this store is located and have head pretty much all the ice cream within a 20 miles radius...outside of that I can't say I've had ALL the ice cream, but I've had a lot. Even outside of Connecticut, the Tolland X-tra Mart has some of the most phenomenal soft serve ice cream you've ever had. They don't offer a lot in terms of flavor...pretty much your basic vanilla, chocolate of twist. You can get "flavor blasts" which are vanilla ice cream with a twist of some other flavor (cheesecake, grape and pineapple are a few examples) but I don't highly recommend them...not because they're not good, but because good ice cream shines without any fancy flavors added in. There is also the usual array of toppings...sprinkles (jimmies), or a dip....but only one cone option other than the basic cone; waffle. Now, I know I've painted a rather dismal picture....afterall, most good ice cream places nowadays pride themselves on the sheer variety of flavors, toppings and cones they offer. But if you're looking for something a little more simple...I promise you, you will not be disappointed. The ice cream here is creamy, and flavorful, and always perfect. I didn't know just how good soft serve ice cream could be until I started becoming a regular at this unassuming X-tramart. Give it a try...you'll probably become one too! Two tips for those who want to give it a try; -Give a shot to their soft serve sundae....it's simple, just ice cream, hot fudge or caramel (you pick), whipped cream, nuts, sprinkles and a cherry, but it is amazing. The pure goodness of the ice cream underneath all those toppings makes it a far-above ordinary experience! -If you're planning on going on a hot summer day (the perfect time for ice cream!) be aware that the lines can get LONG. The ice cream here is hardly a secret among the locals, and especially between the hours of 4 and 7 there can be an impressive amount of people for such a small establishment. The opening of this store prevented an eyesore from developing on a busy intersection. I use this location frequently when I'm driving home from work. I'll stop in the winter for a small bundle of wood for a fire. Or I'll grab my free coffee on the first of the month. It's a good spot, albeit small, to pick up a soda (no fountain) or lottery ticket, too. A little tricky to get out of, though. Gas prices tend to be high here as they're right off the highway, so one pays a bit of a premium. I like the place as it's close to my CT home. However, I prefer the new Cumberland Farms in town as it's bigger and far easier to use, with much cheaper gas prices.

This little convenient store is staffed with happy and out-going employees, my first visit was fun yes I said fun as strange as that sounds being this is a C-store where prices, efficiency and the quality of the product should be the determining factor to be a frequent visitor here. I am not from this area so I originally stopped in because my friend told me this was the best coffee bar around, any size hot or ice coffee is ninety ninety cents and it's totally free on Friday and that's a great perk, but it's the selection and freshness that hooked me along with the interaction with the staff. I never ready prepared my own iced coffee since I usually prefer mine hot although in the warmer months this is an option I frequently choose. Creating a great iced coffee is a process which I understand now but never appreciated and is probably one of the reasons I've never been a fan of it from a drive-through (it definitely requires some thought). The recipe for a perfect iced coffee in my opinion: Grab a large plastic cup - add granular sugar into the empty cup - add a few inches of hot coffee to completely melt the sugar I prefer the Rwanda blend to accomplish this - fill the cup with ice this will prevent the cup from melting - add fresh cream - fill the remaining space with more hot coffee I pick a second type for this, today it was a bold blend, stir to mix and chill, pop on the top and grab a straw... I do a lot of drive-throughs out of convenience and hope for a nice cup of coffee - this is a guaranteed way to ensure you get it your way for a fraction of the price and it also slows the world down for a few minutes. I'm learning we don't always need to be in such a hurry and this place helps instills that mind set...
