Let's say (you know, hypothetically) that you're a UConn grad student who lives in Vernon and you didn't have time to grab breakfast on your way out of the house. But on your drive to school, your stomach starts to growl. "Oh, goodness," you say, "I thought I could make it through mid-morning, but it looks like I may just have to grab breakfast on the go. Maybe a coffee too."
Well, my friends, look no further than Krauzer's Food Stores. With a (hot) breakfast sandwich + a small coffee for $1.99, you really can't lose.
Well, sort of.
Even though there's a full Boar's Head deli (and a small butcher's shop) here, I'm not sure they always use the Boar's Head meats in their sandwiches. For instance, I once got the ham, egg, and cheese sandwich, and for my ham contribution, the deli worker just pulled out 1-2 thin cold cut ham slices from a package. Great, thanks. That being said, they occasionally have Boar's Head turkey ham featured as one of the $1.99 sandwich options, so if you see this option when you stop in, snag it while you can. For all those other times, it's worth it (in my opinion) to pay $1 more to get the steak, egg, and cheese. The steak slices, while not many in number, are tasty. The additional topping charge of $0.10 per ingredient is also worth it, particularly if you order mushrooms.
Yet, the best part of the sandwich is the bread. Consistently warm, fluffy, and chewy, I would even argue that it's better than some bread buns I've had at sit-down restaurants.
The coffee is consistently watery, but then again, what else do you expect from a $1.99 deal? Also, the place cash only unless you get over a certain price threshold (I want to say it's $5, but I don't quite recall).
As for the rest of the store, the prices seem a bit high but not any higher than your typical convenience store.
All in all, not a bad place to find yourself in if you need a cheap breakfast sandwich. read more
