The server was attentive and lovely. I had three Carnitas with beans and rice. All of the food was amazing. The server suggested the sauce to use with a Carnita and she was right....it stepped the already delicious Carnitas up a notch. I was seated immediately. The interior was new or up-to-date and clean. Food was very good. Different than anywhere we've ate before for Mexican. I could only eat half of my burrito for dinner and I brought the rest home for lunch the next day along with my leftover chips and salsa. Salsa (pico) was very fresh. Chips were different but great! Prompts friendly service. Good portion with good flavor. I hade the Chicken Adobo fries, my son had a birria tacos and my husband had the birria burrito. It was lol good and very filling. My only complaint is that I looked at the components of the fries and it said it had pico de gallo and I'm allergic to onions so I asked for no pico. The choice of food is limited to versions of meat. There are no vegetable options at all, including salads. The adobo chicken taco was delicious. The atmosphere was distracting with wait staff enjoying each other a little too much. There were two customers who talked too loudly and with too much profanity. One joked about a serious accident his step father experienced earlier in the day. They treated a public dining as their private living room. Went in for lunch last Sunday, the service was ok, they had 3-4 tables but appeared to be mostly to go business. I got mine to go ordered 4 tacos it was about 28$ and the food was less than good. I ate 2 of the burritos and threw the rest away. read more

The food was excellent. We started with chips and salsa. The chips were homemade and the salsa was unlike any I've had. It consisted of roasted tomatoes, onion and jalapeños. It had a really fresh taste. My husband had a carne asada burrito that he said was really good, especially the red hot sauce provided. I had a carnitas bowl with rice, queso fresca, lots of meat and pico de gallo. I added a half order of guacamole to it. It was sooo good. The bowl was huge. I couldn't begin to finish it, so took most of it home. The restaurant is set up so that you order at the counter and sit down in the d I ning area.They bring your food to you. Drinks are bought out of a cooler. The dining area is small with round tables seating no more than three people. If I had a crowd, I would do take-out of which there was plenty of business. My wife and I came to Tomate for lunch today . We are on a road trip and saw the reviews and from what we read we were excited to give it a try . There was no menu on the counter as we walked in just a clip board with the top sheet of paper notify customers that prices had increased and broke down labor rate increases in an attempt to justify or explain the cost increases . As I flipped through the other sheets of paper it was apparent that this was their menu . A carne asada burrito was 28 dollars ! I disappointingly told the young lady at the counter that we couldn't afford to eat there . Truth is we can afford it but chose not to blow a 30 dollar bill on a burrito . I'm not sure what's up with this place but ended up having an open face prime rib sandwich with fries and a side salad down the street for 14.50. read more

Tomate grill is my go to Mexican food here in town! Their food always looks appealing and tastes even better. Coming from the west coast, i was excited that they offered asada fries which are my favorite and it's what I get every time I order from here. Definitely recommend their birria as well. read more

Stopped in on a cross-country drive from Boston to California. Wasn't sure what to expect but wow, these tacos were great. I got the adobo chicken tacos The corn tortillas were handmade, the adobo chicken was seasoned perfectly, the red salsa was hot but flavorful. Staff was very nice and attentive. We were passing through Watford City and TripAdvisor gave Tomate Mexican Grill a good rating. Though my husband's first preference (enchiladas) are not on their menu, the burrito asada and chips he ordered was large and flavorful. My order of quesadilla asada included 2 large quesas plus rice. Both meals were plentiful and tasty. There are some amenities I felt were missing... their side dish of rice or beans only included refried beans (I prefer the healthier black beans); we both wanted a Coke but they only sell 20 oz bottles (we asked for glasses to split a Coke but they only had Styrofoam coffee cups and NO ICE); the restaurant itself is very, very compact and all 3 small tables around us were very, very tippy. It lacks any kind of romance but it does have a quirky, small town atmosphere which I kind of liked. This is undoubtedly my only pass-through of Watford City. If I lived here, would I be a repeat customer? Overall, yes, I would. I'd be more inclined to do take out (which would mitigate most of the shortcomings) and enjoy the ample servings of some pretty good Mexican food. read more

Eat here. Seriously. This is the freshest and best food found in Watford City. Our particular favorite were the Carne Asada tacos, but everything we tried was delicious. You will not be disappointed by the flavors or the portions. Plus, they sell Mexican cokes and candy. This spot is a real deal Mexican tacos shop-style food truck. They have a couple of picnic tables with umbrellas, so you can eat there, but we usually called and placed an order for pick up. It's set up at the top of a hill on a dirt road, off highway 85. It can be a little tricky to find, but it's totally worth looking for. We were so excited when we found Tomate. You will be, too. It was a taste of home right here in Watford City.
