It's somewhat baffling all of Tomlinson Cannon's communication encourages customers to contact them with any problems. I can only assume that's for the slight catharsis of complaining into the void, because in my experience, they won't return any communication and, if they do, it's only to tell you that the issues are your own fault.   We contacted Tomlinson Cannon primarily to bury several downspouts and direct water further away from our home. We also had some gutter questions, and they recommended some modifications, including larger gutters on the front of the house due to the roof pitch. We were quoted gutter guards only for the front sections being replaced, but they agreed they weren't really necessary because our gutters were relatively empty. The drawings provided with the quote showed the trenching for the buried downspouts (5 in total) would not interfere with our foliage, but on the day of install the pipes were buried in different locations and significantly cut into the root system of a large red maple and decimated a bed of hostas. Disappointing, but what's done is done. I asked the installer what sort of maintenance I should be doing or how I'd know there was a problem, and he just kind of shrugged and told me I'd know.   A few weeks later we had our first moderate rain, and one of the downspouts turned into a geyser where it attaches to the pipe (photo attached). There were some other issues - drain covers popping off in rain, significant soil erosion around the drain, etc. I shot them a quick email with photos and some questions about whether certain things were normal or if there was anything I should be doing. It went unanswered, but after trying to call them we got an automated email 10 days later that service had been scheduled. I called them to follow up on the questions in the email and was told the worker would answer those when he came out.   Two months later on the scheduled Friday, I took off work early to be home for their arrival window between 3 and 5pm. No one showed up. I called and was told the job had been marked complete, and they'd have the guy call me back on Monday. That weekend it rained, and the geyser returned. No one called on Monday, so I called back on Thursday and was told a manager would call. Tim called me back, and he told me they had been out and cleared some debris from the drains, and the reason we're having a geyser is because we didn't get gutter guards. (Okay, and you were just going to sit on that information unless I call five separate times?) He said they actually don't guarantee their work without gutter guards (which was the first that had been mentioned and was absolutely nowhere on any of the paperwork), and he'd send a quote for gutter guards.   A week goes by - nothing. We call back and are told that Tim will call us back. Another week goes by - nothing. We call the number Tim called from and leave a voicemail. Another week has gone by with no response, so now I'm leaving this review, four months after the initial work was done, when we're still in the same (if not worse) spot with our downspouts.   We had some basement work done as well, and the guy who came out was great and answered all my questions fabulously. Similarly, the guy who came out for the initial gutter consult was great. But since the buried downspouts alone were $4k of the $7k we paid, I'm weighing my rating accordingly. It feels very disingenuous to say that the improperly working downspouts are our fault when that's the whole reason we contacted the company in the first place, and gutter guards were never mentioned or recommended for the pre-existing gutters that connect to the buried downspouts. We've checked the gutters - they have only a minimal dusting of birch catkin fragments (see photo). Would the gutter guards keep out the very small birch catkin confetti? I wouldn't know, because it's impossible to get any answers. Even if we wanted to remedy the situation by apparently paying several thousand more dollars for gutter guards, they won't return our calls. And if we get gutter guards, how can we be sure they won't add another arbitrary condition to their work after the fact?   If your project goes perfectly, you may have a very different experience. If it doesn't, perhaps try journaling, because the result will be the same. Based on our experience, I would not recommend Tomlinson Cannon for exterior work. read more

I had them install a sump pump and drainage tiles around the perimeter of the basement. If any thing goes wrong down the road, don't call them - especially at 3:30 pm on a Friday! Had problems with the pump and they said all their guys were already gone for the weekend - that I should call a plumber. Poor customer service! read more

We had them install wall anchors in our basement, where the rising water table had cause them to start bowing inwards. The workers we encountered were perfectly nice, and the price they charged us to do the work was more than fair. It actually came in lower than we originally thought it would. However, we had a couple of problems with their work, one major and one minor. The minor problem was the fact that they left the house open/unlocked while they left the property for a lunch break on their first day of work. We would not have even known about this, except my husband came home over his lunch break and found the house wide open and empty. He addressed it with the foreman of the job that day, and the next day the same mistake was not made. The major issue was that, during the course of the job, they had to bust up a portion of one of the concrete squares of our front walk. When they were done with the job, they did a TERRIBLE job of repairing the sidewalk. It really, really looks horrible, which is especially disappointing from a business that works with concrete on a regular basis. When I received a call from the company the following winter, offering their snow removal services, I complained about the sidewalk, spoke to a manager, and he assured me that he would personally check it out and get back to me to see what they could do to right the situation. I have never heard back from him, and to this day I am infuriated everytime I walk up to my house and see that ugly sidewalk square. I had high hopes for this company, and unfortunately they didn't live up to them. read more

Our sidewalk was sinking so we called Tomlinson/Cannon as they were recommended to us. They came out the same day we called them and gave us a good faith estimate. They did the work the very next day and the actual end cost was a bit less then their estimate! They were prompt and were there when they said they would be there. I've used this company twice now and the work they did cleaning my gutters was great. Their customer service, however, is atrocious and I will NEVER use them again. The first time I called them to clean my gutters, they were a mess and were completely clogged with leaves/sticks. One man showed up and was done in a little over an hour. I paid the hourly rate of $96/hr plus $24 for every 15 minutes after. Good deal for everyone. The second time I called, our gutters were in far better shape than before and I just wanted to make sure they were completely clear before winter. Two men showed up and worked for less than an hour. The initial problem came when I opened the bill from them a couple weeks later to the tune of $240! The workers overstated the time they spent at my house and it turns out the hourly rate applies to each worker they send. First, this information was NEVER conveyed to me when I requested the service. I was only told it's $96/hour and $24 for every 15 minutes over. Second, why does it take two men the same amount of time to clean my gutters as it does one man? Especially when the gutters were far worse for the single worker that came the first time. I called Tomlinson Cannon to resolve the bill issue and spoke with the manager, Dan. He looked over the paperwork, called back the next day and said he was willing to take the quarter hour charge off my bill, bringing it down to $192. When I said I wasn't happy with that and should only be charged the rate I was quoted ($96/hour, $24/15 minutes over) he told me I was wrong (basically called me a liar) and they ALWAYS tell everyone the charges apply per man they send. Again, I was NEVER told this. He finally said "I don't care what you do! Pay the bill, don't pay the bill, I don't care! I'm done with this!". I told him I wanted to pay what I was quoted and nothing more. He then seemed taken aback when I asked for that in writing. At this point I didn't even care about the money - this was all on principal now and Dan the manager was a dick to me. I ended up calling the main office and spoke with the owner to make sure the correct bill was sent to me. Long story short, if you absolutely have to use this company keep a watch handy because they will try to overcharge you. And Dan is a dick. read more
