Tomo is such a cute and modern restaurant. The ambiance is so pretty with Japanese paintings. The Food was ok. Tomo salad was not that flavourful. The chicken wings, fried gyoza and spider roll were not bad. I give it 4 stars because it could be better.

Decided to try tomo for the first time and I was very happy with my choice . I had the salmon poke bowl it was flavourful and perfect portion . I wanted to try one of their cocktails so I got the Mai thai it was perfect not too sweet very refreshing definitely ordering again . Staff was friendly and attentive. They also have space heaters so it was the perfect temperature. Awesome place to go on a friday night !

    Tomo Fried Chicken ($13)

I went to Tomo the first weekend post lockdown and sat on their patio. I was pleasantly surprised by how affordable the restaurant was considering the lovely presentation and quality of the food. Drinks: I ordered the mojito for $12 and it was delicious, would definitely order this again. I also tried the Mai Tai Punch for $15 and its good and very aesthetically pretty, but a bit expensive in my opinion. Food: I ordered the philly roll and got 8 pcs for $12 which is fairly priced compared to other sushi restaurants. It was delicious and plated very nicely. A bit more cucumber than most philly rolls but still delicious and would definitely order again. I tried the Tomo fried chicken which was AMAZING. They give soo many pieces of fried chicken for $13 and it tastes delicious. It has such a unique taste that I've never had elsewhere. Also, it is surprisingly not greasy at all considering its fried chicken. I highly recommend this dish to anyone who goes to Tomo. Service: Service was pretty quick and the staff was very friendly. They had a decent patio with a roof so it wasnt too hot which was nice. I have to go back when indoor dining opens up because the ambiance inside seems very nice. I would definitely return to Tomo to try other items on their menu and recommend to anyone who enjoys asian fusion cuisine. Even if you do not like sushi there are other choices on their menu. The move is definitely to order a bunch of items on the menu to share with your table. Overall, superbe quality of food for an affordable price!

Tomo was a great new spot for me. The prices were very reasonable and the food was really good. Got the gyoza, Mai tai punch, philly roll and my friend got the fried chicken. The drinks were very expensive but the punch was delicious! My friend got a mojito and that was really good as well. The sushi was great, very fresh. The gyoza was very good as well. Tried my friends fried chicken and it was delicious. It has a very unique flavour, came with a lot of pieces and was not greasy or slimy. Would definitely repurchase all of these items. Really looking forward to going back to try more!

Strolling within Byward Market while in Downtown Ottawa, it was just getting to dinner time & I had a craving for Japanese food! Tomo has a warm woody decor, an izakaya kind of feel when you walk in with a big bar. I absolutely love the atmosphere of this place, but when it comes to the review for the food... especially given my expectations being spoiled with options from the GTA, they won't win my heart. As soon as we picked up the menus, we knew it was a fully authentic Japanese spot. You won't have a variety of sushi/sashimi to choose off the menu, they're mostly set items. It's one of those "philly cheese rolls" kind of spots, and then you realize it's a Canadian Japanese restaurant. We opted for the veggie roll, and the poke bowls to be safe, and they were made well! The gyoza were also cooked with a good crisp. Service is excellent as well. If you aren't looking for lots on the menu, and just want a place to sit back, have a drink or two, and don't mind a casual Japanese Izakaya place without a large menu of "sushi or sashimi" selections, then I'd recommend this place!

So this is the rework of what used to be called Wonton Mama. It's doubled in size and the menu has been reworked. The food was fine. The Salt and Pepper Calamari is different and not as good - it was overcooked which didn't help. The Sushi is as good as always. The decor is lovely and they have some community seating areas (which I think is fun). It's worth going to - but I was horribly disappointed about the Sale & Pepper Calamari change. In some ways unfair that I'm giving them only a 3 star rating. If I didn't have that comparison, they might have rated higher. Would I return: Pretty unlikely - the big draw for me was the Salt and Pepper Calamari - it was worth the effort to deal with crowds and parking - and now it's not. Would I recommend: If someone is in the market and wants sushi, this is still a great option. Skip the Salt and Pepper Calamari. (OK - I know, I'm being very repetitive!)

Oh my... oh my... oh my!!!! AMAZING! We received a gift card and decided to give the try a place. WOW!!! Some of the best food I have had in the area. I can say this compares to high end sushi in NYC! The rolls just melt in your mouth, you don't even need soy sauce. They are super fresh!!! They poke bowl, delicious! The rice, lighter than I am used to but great flavours! The steak teriyaki- wow! The miso soup, the what I've had in ottawa! You just can't go wrong! For those saying it's too pricey, you get what you pay for!!!! If you want cheap then go to AYCE! If you want amazing quality, come here. Parking: well - you know the deal in the Byward Market, metered street parking. Staff: super friendly and attentive in the afternoon (Saturday). The only bad thing? I forgot my left overs *cry* lol

    Salmon pokebowl

This place is kind of overpriced for what they serve. My friend got the tataki and her portion was tiny! I got the pokebowl because I wanted to compare it to the one at Burrito Sensei, and I have decided that Burrito Sensei is much better! At Tomo, there were fewer ingredients (resulting in lack of flavour) and the portion size was smaller. The price was around $2 or so cheaper, but I'd rather pay the extra $2 to get a much larger variety of ingredients in my pokebowl. The ambience is pretty nice though, and the service was quite professional. I went for an early dinner (around 5pm) and the place was quite empty.

    The three rolls I got!

The sushi is definitely fresh here, but could do with more flavor. I tried 3 rolls, and the roll with salmon on top was my favourite. However, I left still hungry, and actually had all you can eat sushi to satisfy my sushi craving a few days later! Service was really professional and prompt, although I had to wait a bit to be seated, even though it was not that busy. The atmosphere is really artsy and I sat next to the patio, so it was comfortable being inside but still being able to people watch.

My review will mirror most of the other ones for Tomo. Tomo looks good, their patio is cozy and the inside is very trendy. We walked in and were able to choose whatever table we wanted. Their menu is small and easy to go through. The drinks looked delicious but very pricey. BF & I decided to order a sushi roll, fried chicken and fried rice. The sushi was AMAZING! Best sushi I had in a really long time, but it was 15$. It tasted very fresh and was unique, we really really enjoyed it. The fried chicken was only OK. Something was off with the batter, it was very dry. It didn't feel like it had been fried properly or perhaps the chicken wasn't battered well enough. The chicken was moist and tender. The fried rice was very basic, I can make better at home unfortunately. It's probably a fun place to come to have drinks & sushi, but I wouldn't bother with the rest of the menu. Unlikely to return.

    Poké bowl with salmon

I was sick of going to ayce sushi places, so I suggested going to Tomo since I had heard good things about it before. We ordered the salmon poké bowl to share. To a layperson, it's basically a sushi roll minus the seaweed, in a bowl. It was pleasant but not outstanding in any way. Next came the Tomo roll and the Volcano roll. Both were delicious, though I preferred the Volcano roll because of its unique taste and spice. The grilled squid was what you would expect: crispy edges, very chewy, and served in a slightly sweet sauce. Nothing to write home about. The beef tataki was served with green apple sliced as thin as matchsticks. I'd say that it was not flavourful enough, because I've had better. Food aside, the service is what prevents me from giving it five stars. The waitresses were not very friendly but most importantly, the service was slow. We waited for around 15 to 20 minutes for the tataki to come after the grilled squid had arrived. One of the waitresses thought that we were waiting for the bill since we had been sitting there for so long, so we informed her of the tataki we had ordered. Like many people have said, the portion sizes are quite small for the money that is shelled out. However, I would return for the food since Ottawa doesn't have many good sushi places anyway.

Mohawk roll. Looks pretty but was pretty meh.

But this elevates that process and is Japanese, which is one of my favourite flavour profiles. The ambiance is so nice. There are screens between the tables so that you can cook and eat in private, which I really appreciated. Being new to the process and restaurant, I felt so fortunate to have Jarred as my server. He explained how everything worked and was so patient with me. Basically, you pay one price for all you can eat...and it's such a bargain! There are so many meats, sides and even desserts to choose from. Jarred helped me choose and was so patient explaining everything that had been marinated in soy sauce and was not gluten free. I was disappointed I couldn't have beef, so he told me he would grab some brisket without the marinade. I ended up ordering that brisket, shrimp and sausage for the meat. The sides were sweet potato in a brown sugary sauce, corn, pineapple, and rice. I can say that the sausage was my favourite, had a nice sweetness to it and different from the typical sausage you get elsewhere. You use the grill to cook everything which is so much more fun than just sitting and waiting for the food to arrive. Everything was so fresh and just tasted amazing. The grilled pineapple was divine! Jarred also suggested I order the Bibimbap. It was a dish with seaweed, veggies, and an egg on top. It tasted like an amazing sushi roll. I also had an UME pineapple drink. You can add an extra oz of alcohol for just $2. It was delicious. There are always staff around and they clear dishes you are finished with super fast. Everything moves there like a well-oiled machine. For dessert, I had this little creme brulee, which was just the right size not to overstuff your tummy. So amazing all warm and bubbly after it sat on the grill. One of the best I've ever had. While writing this review, I discovered there is a location relatively close to where I live in Waterloo. I will definitely be going. This isn't just an extraordinary dinner, it was an extraordinary experience. Perfect food, perfect service, and such a great value! This would be so fun for a date night or night out with friends. I will definitely frequent this restaurant, LOVE it! This location also has a parking lot, which is most welcome in Ottawa!

While eating, I found a piece of metal/steel wool in the chicken that was served to me. This is a serious safety issue, imagine if I have swallowed it. (Looks like really not) I even asked them how do they handled this situation, and they just said 10% off is the best they can do ‍ This is not just a small mistake, it's a food safety concern!! The restaurant itself is due for a refresh without a doubt. Appears to have been last updated in the '80's. Which leaves it looking worn and shabby. Luckily we weren't there for the decor. We were greeted at the door as we came in and shown to our grill table which was preset for our arrival. We ordered some "exotic" mixed Drinks. Which were tasty but not Over the top delicious. We ordered the seafood combo, chicken and shrimp, and a chicken combo at the tapenyaki grill. Our "host" put on a chef jacket and cooked our food at the grill in front of us without the typical fanfare or show that we were expecting. This was ok with us but some might find it disappointing. The food itself was flavorful and generally properly cooked. The soup starter was supposed to be a chicken broth was tasteless and actually looked like a hot water bath with some mushroom flakes and scallions. We did find that the egg for the fried rice (which was an extra cost) was fried to a crispy rubbery texture but everything else was good with a tasty sauce that was not just soya or teriyaki. The portions were on the smaller side but enough just nothing left to take home. Overall the experience was under whelming for the price. They could easily improve by a refresh and slight changes to amounts of food. Specifically more vegetables, better soup flavor, and larger rice/noodles portions. The protein amounts were plenty even heavy compared to the rest of the portions. Overall ok, not worth a return visit though.

It came to around $30 a person, and was quoted on the menu to be for about 3-4 people. I would say it's barely enough for 3 very small people, let alone 4. It did not come with miso soup or salad. The quality of the sushi was nothing to be amazed about. Although it was probably a bit better than AYCE, I think for the prices, I'd expect better quality sushi.
