I really enjoyed the texture and crunchiness from the taro chips mixed in Beef Tataki (5/5): my friend was not a fan of raw beef but I love it. The sauce was great and I like how there was pineapple bits to it Spider Roll (5/5): pretty standard - can't go wrong with it Kiss Roll (5/5): I think this was the only specialty roll that didn't have shrimp tempura in it aside from the veggie ones. Customer service & ambiance: We were greeted and seated right away. Our host and waitress were friendly. Service was pretty quick. The modern interior lighting was dim but set the relaxing tone for the evening. It was also aesthetically pleasing inside Food: I'm a sucker for Japanese food, and their Aburi Salmon Sushi which was torched, was absolutely amazing. Their house sauce and jalapinos were a great touch and gave the roll the perfect amount of spice. I also got the fried chicken bao which was delicious. The meat was juicy and crispy on the outside. So this review mostly applies in the very specific circumstance that you're vegan or eating out with one. If not, carry on and check out the other reviews instead, you're good. That disclaimer applied: I had checked the rather small menu out in advance to make sure there'd be something for me to eat, just in case. I spotted several things that seemed workable (pad thai, mushroom tempura, a delicious-sounding salad). At the restaurant, it turned out two of the vegetarian options weren't actually available that night. Furthermore, the mushroom tempura was permanently crossed off, the salad had mayonnaise, and the pad thai had fish sauce. The only veg sushi options were an avocado roll, a cucumber roll, an avocado-cucumber roll, and an avocado-cucumber roll with some seaweed salad on top, none of which seemed worth the prices given and which didn't have enough variety to make a decent meal anyways. Inari, sweet potato tempura, futomaki: nope. Just those. After a moment, the waitress personally recommended the fried rice sans egg to me, the only vegetarian thing left on the menu aside from the bland rolls. But when it came to the table, it was obvious from the taste that it had been fried in a *ton* of butter. Other people at the table tried it and instantly agreed; the butter was the predominant flavour, since the chef hadn't used any soy sauce. One person even joked that he loved how creamy it was and he'd have to start using butter in his fried rice as well. If the waitress had just been upfront that there were no remaining options for me, that would have been fine; that would be my mistake for not verifying that the veg-sounding options were actually veg in advance. But the rice was outright recommended to me as something vegan, and the waitress clearly knew what "vegan" meant with no prompting from the conversation we'd had. Either she was careless enough not to remember the ingredients in the food they serve or she decided to lie. I can just imagine what would have happened if it had been a dairy allergy rather than a dietary preference, or if I'd been the kind of militant that forces themselves to throw up if they break their diet. It still ruined an evening that was supposed to be a fun treat. I left the restaurant hungry and vaguely nauseous. Let's end with the mostly-positive: The ambiance was lovely. Great music and beautiful low-lit decor, and I was amused to see an episode of Naruto playing on the bar screen. Everyone else's food looked good, and they said it tasted pretty good, too. It is one of those places where the food is really tasty and I think it would be much more popular and well rated if it was a little bit less expensive. But I did find it surprising that you didn't get anything not even a side of rice or potatoes. Even if you want any sides like vegetables or rice or potatoes to add onto a dish, it is not listed on the menu which I find odd if you offer mains like a $40 steak In terms of the other food, The sushi I would call good but not amazing, similar quality to a typical Izakaya style restaurant. The pork belly bao had a large piece of meat and was well marinated, but for $17 for two baos its a bit small or expensive. Decided to try tomo for the first time and I was very happy with my choice . I had the salmon poke bowl it was flavourful and perfect portion . I wanted to try one of their cocktails so I got the Mai thai it was perfect not too sweet very refreshing definitely ordering again . Staff was friendly and attentive. I went to Tomo the first weekend post lockdown and sat on their patio. I was pleasantly surprised by how affordable the restaurant was considering the lovely presentation and quality of the food. Drinks: I ordered the mojito for $12 and it was delicious, would definitely order this again. I also tried the Mai Tai Punch for $15 and its good and very aesthetically pretty, but a bit expensive in my opinion. Food: I ordered the philly roll and got 8 pcs for $12 which is fairly priced compared to other sushi restaurants. It was delicious and plated very nicely. A bit more cucumber than most philly rolls but still delicious and would definitely order again. I tried the Tomo fried chicken which was AMAZING. They give soo many pieces of fried chicken for $13 and it tastes delicious. It has such a unique taste that I've never had elsewhere. Also, it is surprisingly not greasy at all considering its fried chicken. I highly recommend this dish to anyone who goes to Tomo. Service: Service was pretty quick and the staff was very friendly. They had a decent patio with a roof so it wasnt too hot which was nice. I have to go back when indoor dining opens up because the ambiance inside seems very nice. Strolling within Byward Market while in Downtown Ottawa, it was just getting to dinner time & I had a craving for Japanese food! Tomo has a warm woody decor, an izakaya kind of feel when you walk in with a big bar. I absolutely love the atmosphere of this place, but when it comes to the review for the food... especially given my expectations being spoiled with options from the GTA, they won't win my heart. As soon as we picked up the menus, we knew it was a fully authentic Japanese spot. You won't have a variety of sushi/sashimi to choose off the menu, they're mostly set items. It's one of those "philly cheese rolls" kind of spots, and then you realize it's a Canadian Japanese restaurant. We opted for the veggie roll, and the poke bowls to be safe, and they were made well! The gyoza were also cooked with a good crisp. Service is excellent as well. The food is really good! Located in the Byward market it's really easy to stop in while downtown. There is street park as well as parking lots. Prices are not outrageous 7-15. I absolutely love the soy sauce lol. Would have loved to give them 5 stars but the service is s l o w. It took a while for someone to seat us, no one came to check on us (I had to flag the waiter down) and it's just generally slow paced. The food came out pretty quickly though. So this is the rework of what used to be called Wonton Mama. It's doubled in size and the menu has been reworked. The food was fine. The Salt and Pepper Calamari is different and not as good - it was overcooked which didn't help. The Sushi is as good as always. The decor is lovely and they have some community seating areas (which I think is fun). It's worth going to - but I was horribly disappointed about the Sale & Pepper Calamari change. In some ways unfair that I'm giving them only a 3 star rating. If I didn't have that comparison, they might have rated higher. Would I return: Pretty unlikely - the big draw for me was the Salt and Pepper Calamari - it was worth the effort to deal with crowds and parking - and now it's not. I got the pokebowl because I wanted to compare it to the one at Burrito Sensei, and I have decided that Burrito Sensei is much better! At Tomo, there were fewer ingredients (resulting in lack of flavour) and the portion size was smaller. The price was around $2 or so cheaper, but I'd rather pay the extra $2 to get a much larger variety of ingredients in my pokebowl. Their menu is small and easy to go through. The drinks looked delicious but very pricey. BF & I decided to order a sushi roll, fried chicken and fried rice. The sushi was AMAZING! Best sushi I had in a really long time, but it was 15$. It tasted very fresh and was unique, we really really enjoyed it. The fried chicken was only OK. Something was off with the batter, it was very dry. It didn't feel like it had been fried properly or perhaps the chicken wasn't battered well enough. The chicken was moist and tender. The fried rice was very basic, I can make better at home unfortunately. It's probably a fun place to come to have drinks & sushi, but I wouldn't bother with the rest of the menu. I was sick of going to ayce sushi places, so I suggested going to Tomo since I had heard good things about it before. We ordered the salmon poké bowl to share. To a layperson, it's basically a sushi roll minus the seaweed, in a bowl. It was pleasant but not outstanding in any way. Next came the Tomo roll and the Volcano roll. Both were delicious, though I preferred the Volcano roll because of its unique taste and spice. The grilled squid was what you would expect: crispy edges, very chewy, and served in a slightly sweet sauce. Nothing to write home about. The beef tataki was served with green apple sliced as thin as matchsticks. I'd say that it was not flavourful enough, because I've had better. Food aside, the service is what prevents me from giving it five stars. The waitresses were not very friendly but most importantly, the service was slow. We waited for around 15 to 20 minutes for the tataki to come after the grilled squid had arrived. One of the waitresses thought that we were waiting for the bill since we had been sitting there for so long, so we informed her of the tataki we had ordered. Like many people have said, the portion sizes are quite small for the money that is shelled out. I felt that it was overpriced and my friends were not overly impressed with their meals either. We all left hungry for another food place thereafter. Being a purist when it comes to single malts, I prefer them either neat or with a dash of still spring water. Throwing my caution to the wind I plumped for the $18 Smokey Old Fashioned at Tomo to start my New Years Eve meal. Ardbeg Isle of Islay Single Malt, blended together with Glenmorangie, a superbly caramelly-sweet Single Malt, with cardomen bitters, orange rind, Angustura Orange bitters and clove syrup served in a bar-fire wood-smoked glass over an iceberg-sized ice cube. An amazing blend of smoke and ice and orange and caramel played across my tongue, whisking me back to the Highlands in an instant. My dining companions Caesar had a rich fulsome texture and it came with a strip of bacon. Nothing wrong with that! We decided to go plate-sharing and ordered a good selection. The Thai spicy curry soup was a beautiful bright thick meaty broth, with shrimp, clams and calamari (perhaps a little too much) with high notes of ginger and spice cut with basil. The signature Tomo roll was eight delectable fresh big pieces of crisp tempura shrimp with masago, spicy mayo, scallion and topped with seared beef. The Spider roll had soft shell crab, cucumber, spicy mayo and big chunks of avocado. Both rolls were bedecked with scallions, white pickled ginger and edible flowers with deliciously tiny Peruvian sweet-drop pickled peppers. Crisp chicken bites were awesome; hot, crisp, fatty plump nuggets of meaty poultry heaven served immediately from the fryer. The fowl was black chicken I was informed, and was not the tasteless white meat nodules you normally get. This is the real deep-fried deal. Next, the Gyoza dumplings are fantastic, sweet, soft, light, pan-fried chicken and vegetables with light scallions, with light sweet teriyaki dipping sauce. The Grilled Duck skewers were good, well cooked enough, with a seven-spice teriyaki Japanese sauce; This plate was perhaps the weakest part of the menu offering tonight. Presentation was okay with the square plates that were about half the size of a dinner plate. If you're into a high ( taste x size ) / price ratio, you're in for a disappointment. I went in here with a few coworkers for lunch. 3/4 of us ordered the pad thai, and though it was okay by my standards, for the other two, it was subpar. The place looks so cool and the patio is nice in the summer. I absolutely always need to have Sriracha sauce in my pad Thai, and though I asked for it while ordering, the waiter didn't bring it until about 15 min later after we reminded him to ( we true to call him about three times but he kept ignoring us and walking off). By then, I was almost done with my food. I was not happy. On top of that, some of us ordered drinks, and didn't have them served until halfway through our food. The waiter only had two other tables, I don't know what his problem was. We all noticed he kept walking by the other two tables (each of 2 persons), while he completely ignored us. We felt he was judging us based off our age group since the other couples looked in their 40s-50s, and thought they might tip better. They were definitely getting great service. The crew at work took me here to celebrate me finishing up my contract. We had a reservation, but for lunch on a friday we didn't need one for our group of nine. Tomo is more known as a dinner place, than a lunch spot. There was lots of space when we arrived at noon. The layout is different from a lot of other japanese places that I've been to since it is very open, and I'm used to having semi-private booths. Still not an issue. The menu has a lot of rolls, and some lighter fare. A couple of my coworkers had a poke salad. It is not related to Pokemon. I had a mohawk suishi roll. I cannot recall all of the components in the roll, and Tomo's website is currently hacked so I cannot tell you. I will cut this review short, but we did enjoy the restaurant!! read more

I went there to see what has replaced Wonton Mama (which I loved). I went to Tomo for lunch and ordered 16 pieces of sushi that ended up to be around $25. The quality was good, great presentation, but nothing outstanding. For a restaurant in this price rage and cuisine, I would rather go to Kinki. On the other hand, I really liked the service and their recently renovated interior. I would consider coming back for drinks or a dj night, but definitely not for lunch. read more
