After 30, I took the plunge: quit my job and moved to RI so that I could pursue my schoolgirl dream of going to cosmetology school. For the three years prior, I visited every beauty school in the North East, Midwest, and Canada but nothing felt like home until I walked in the doors of TONI&GUY RI. The music was pumping, the personal styles were cutting edge and the hair was awesome! This school is run like family - and while having a very diverse class in terms of age (17-45...another reason for choosing T&G), we were all embraced and supported on our journey. The Teachers, Admissions, Front of House, and Directors are immensely caring and engaged on everything from life to hair and our futures. Oh the tears I cried and the wisdom I received! I can honestly say that I had fun every day, laughed, and learned the most scientific method to cutting. The curriculum is where art meets science. The program is intense (you do your first haircut your second day of school and nine more in the first month!), and it's so worth it! I went to the 2014 Toni and Guy student soirée at Twin Rivers because my niece was modeling in it. Wow, was I impressed! The students created all of the costumes from recycled materials. My niece wore a gown made out of coffee filters and it was Gorgeous!! The show last about 2 hours and there were probably 30-40 models. The music and lighting was extremely professional. The venue was large enough to handle the crowd and parking was plentiful. The cost of admission was only $5 and it was absolutely worth it. Asked what type of shampoo and take conditioner I use I told her told her that I wash and warm rinse and cold didn't get that I would expect someone to ask questions about my ethnicity of my hair so they have a bad understanding and when even when you wash my hair you could see it super curly so if you had done everything properly you should've asked those questions never took a flat iron to my hair code my hair to look like a cowardly lion I have a big night tonight I'm extremely disappointed if for that reason I could not leave a tip not a dollar read more

I was looking for student hair salons and came across Tony and Guy and saw that they were offering free haircuts for men on tuesdays. When I called, the lady at the front didnt know if they were still offering it and that that was an old promotion. When I got there, I asked her again and she told me no and went again to ask and then finally they agreed to honor the check -in and were not sure if it was a corporate thing or not. Anyways, my hair stylist Chelsea was great and her mentor was awesome too. Though it took a while and I totally understand that its a school and that they're being supervised by mentors/teachers but the end product was great. Both of them were really nice and made sure i liked what was being done at every step of the way. They used some fancy words every now and then while i'm used to just saying a number 3 or 4 when I walk in to other places. They did a good job and I was pleased at the end. I would definitely go back if I'm in the area and have some time to spare. May not be the best option if you're looking for a quick cut. Also they need to figure out if they want to keep the check-in deal going or not and not falsely advertise if its not a thing. Definite 3.5 stars. read more

This place is an absolute jewel for those looking for affordable salon services. Both staff and students are a breath of fresh air, the bright new location in Cranston, Rhode Island is positively stunning! My hairstylist was Jackie and she did an absolute bang up job coloring my hair after a botched experience elsewhere. My hair was a complete damaged mess going in, when I walked out it looked restored and refreshed, like a brand new head of hair! She later told me that I was her first live client, and if she's starting her career in this manner, I can just imagine where she'll go in the future. Thank you Jackie! Toni&Guy, what a surprise! For the longest time, I had been wanting to try a service at this place and last week, the time finally came. After calling numerous local salons and unsuccessfully scheduling an appointment, I was in desperation mode and called Toni&Guy to see if they could squeeze me in. I called at 9 am and was in the academy by 11 am. Talk about convenience. Like what many others have said, getting a haircut here is a time commitment. I knew I didn't have to be anywhere for at least 5 hours so I knew I was in the clear. Matt was my stylist and he was all sorts of phenomenal. He was nice, patient and very meticulous with my hair. I had very specific ideas as to how I wanted my highlights to be done: very thin highlights and not more than 2 levels lighter than my real hair color. Other salons that I've been to can't seem to comprehend what this means and I end up looking like something from the 90's. Matt did a great job of brightening my hair without anything too drastic and I've gotten so many compliments already! Here's the crazy thing: Partial Highlights + Haircut = $49. Boom. read more

Stepping into the bustling Toni & Guy is an experience all its own. I kind of felt like I was in that scene of the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy and co. get their swerve on in the Emerald City salon. Much like the "merry old land of Oz," such a sense of PURPOSE! Students in small groups, in classes, styling clients and each other, crafting wild 'dos on mannequin heads, performing makeup jobs from the simple to the color wheel, the entire house occasionally exploding into applause for grads moving on. Yet I was completely relaxed taking it all in around me since my only job was to sit back, do nothing, get pampered. I felt totally safe with my cut in the competent hands my student stylist (the lovely Sarah V.) alongside the instructors who were present for planning and periodic check-ins. The process takes longer than at a regular salon, but I enjoy the "me time" of being in the chair so that was OK for me. When you call to set up an appointment, the receptionist will ask the usual: what services you need, a stylist preference, time - but bear in mind that you need to schedule an appt. before 1ish, depending on what you're getting done. And the prices - incomparably cheap to anything I've paid in any salon. Gotta love that. read more

I was a little nervous about getting my hair done by a student, but the whole experience was great! I called at 9am and made an appointment for 10:30 that same day. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful. My stylists name was Robbie. He was great! I went to get a single all over color and cut, but also left with these great dark purple extensions! The atmosphere was busy and energetic. There were students everywhere in classes, sweeping floors, practicing techniques on manikins and each other... It was definitely a "hip" place with top 40 music playing and everyone with their own unique style. My hair color and cut came out great. And the students must check with an instructor before and after the cut and color which eased any doubts I had. Robbie took the time to explain the products he used and answered all my questions about the academy and what he was doing. My only complaint is I was there a very long time. I was there for 4 hours. But I didn't mind as Robbie did a very thorough job and the time flew by with good conversation and lots of people watching. The prices are also unbeatable. For the cut, color and 5 extensions my total was only $64! If you don't have somewhere important to be, it is definitely worth the extra time spent there. read more

My review is for Sarah "V". So not to compromise the integrity of my review, I should disclose that Sarah V is a close friend of mine. After many years working in sales, she decided to pursue her dream of going to school to become a hair designer. This is a natural career choice for her as she is very fashion forward, dedicated to everything she does, a great listener and a total people person. Since I'm always looking for ways to save money, especially on costly services like hair color, I readily agreed to serve as a hair model for my friend's portfolio project, which included highlights and low-lights, a cut and blow dry and full makeup application. Since I already trust her completely, I was looking forward to this total makeover and I have to say that Sarah exceeded my expectations. I felt like a million bucks when she was done. Sarah V really listens to what her clients tell her. She is a perfectionist, so she may take a little longer than your salon on Newbury Street, but it's well worth the time. She starts with a full consultation with the client and the instructor to ensure everyone is on the same page and you end up with the look you're hoping for. She is a great conversationalist and is happy to explain what she's doing if you're interested. The final product is sure to satisfy you and you cannot beat the prices for these services. The school/salon itself is fun and positive. Students are upbeat and fashionable. The instructors are attentive and knowledgeable. I would absolutely recommend Toni and Guy for quality, low cost services. And of course, if you can get an appointment with her, Sarah V is the stylist to see! read more

My review is for the salon first and then my hairdresser Tara. I called at 1 pm yesterday and got in at 2, so that was great because I really just wanted to get this overdo haircut. I walked in, filled out a sheet about my hair and any allergies, and Tara took me right in. Tara was great, she consulted with what I wanted, talked to her instructor, and began. Tara was very comfortable to talk to and very professional. She had a hard time combing through all my split ends, and we decided to just cut all of them off, I ended up with a much shorter hair cut than I expected, but it was completely necessary and I love it!! My hair hasn't snarled because all of those split ends are off! I am so pleased with my haircut. Tara did a fantastic job and will probably have my Mom come in to get a haircut if Tara is still at Toni & Guy. Tara is a senior and will only be at Toni & Guy for another month, which is great for her, but get in and ask for Tara if you want a great haircut!! read more

Rude and VERY unprofessional!!! That's all I say about my daughters experience there. Not even from the students... but from the so called "professional educators" there. Having adult conversations with a small child there. Use your common sense... and by asking my daughter to leave my grand daughter with 2 men to simply curl her hair.... instead of judging her as a parent why don't you show better customer service and set an EXAMPLE in front of your staff. Thankfully from the sound of it they thought this women was ridiculous anyway!! I'm glad my daughter chose not to listen to her and brought my 2 year old grand daughter back to where she was asked to leave. The guys were great it's the women... they need to come together more. Help a mom out. Your driving people away... which is doing a disservice to your future stylists. I will definitely not recommend this place to anyone we know. read more

I want to be very fair here. If you're looking for an inexpensive service performed by students, then you'll be fine. Teachers are all around to check each student/stylist's work so that's ok. It does require a time commitment, but if you let them know you need to work within a certain time constraint, they should be able to help out (it still won't be as fast as a regular salon, but you might get paired with a more experienced student rather than one just starting out). Where my issue developed was not with the student, but with the teacher/mentor. My hair is very heavy and thick and has weird waves in it. I asked for wispy bangs (or fringe as they call it at T&G). What I ended up with after the mentor sliced into my bangs was choppy, SHORT bangs. Not what I wanted at all and unfortunately right before Christmas. I believe part of this result was my fault as I encouraged her, but I honestly thought someone with her experience knew the difference between "wispy" and "short". The rest of the cut is good, and once the bangs grow out, I think they'll look OK. I do recommend Toni & Guy, but know what you want and keep an eye on what's going on during your time there. read more

Wow...is my best way to sum up my experience here...yesterday started with a great dye job, it actually felt like i had the keritin done..great depth in color, soft and silky. To return today for the keritin treatment..it took approximately 3 hours i have long hair but thin hair. It looks and feels fantastic! Professionaly done at a great price! 150.00... They also have an express one at 50.00 that last about 6 weeks..where mine about 6 months..love it...highly recommend comming here! read more

I popped in yesterday to see if they could do a quick bang trim. It was 11:30-12:30 lunch hour, so I was told to come back at 12:30, and it would be 5 bucks. No problem, I walked next door to check out Marshall's(got some great deals). They had me fill out a quick form when I went back, and I waited a few minutes. The instructor ended up doing the trim in less than 10 min., while the student observed, I got exactly what I wanted, and it was only 5 bucks! This place is awesome! I went in for a cut and all over color and I had Gigi and she was awesome. She stayed 45 minutes late just to blow dry my hair. I had long blonde hair an came out with a dark brown bob, which was exactly what I wanted. Everyone was really nice and professional. I highly recommend. So I moved to Rhode Island from Massachusetts and was told to visit Toni and Guy to have my hair done by students from some known people. I called made an appointment. The day of my appointment I went to the salon with my 2yr old daughter. I was told I couldn't be seen because they don't allow kids!! No where in their website does it states they don't allow children. Like seriously, so when these students own salons they won't allow clients with children? read more

I went to Toni & Guy's for a prom updo on May 10th. I don't have much money and I heard it was cheap, so I figured I should give it a shot because HAIR AND MAKEUP together was $25. My stylist's name was Brooke and she did an absolutely WONDERFUL job. My hair is kind of a pain, there's a lot of trial and error that goes into styling it. Brooke took the time to try different things in order to find something functional that would stay in. It looked GREAT! You may be worried about having a student do your hair, that it won't come out great, but students are supervised by professionals the entire time and even then, they know what they're doing! Very good! I was nervous to get my hair cut by a student, but I was a little low on funds and desperately needed a cut. My hair is super straight and easy, so I figured I'd be safe. I was assigned a junior stylist. If anyone is nervous--just know that they don't do ANYTHING until consulting with their instructor, so you are safe! The instructor was there every step of the way. A cut cost me $17 and I left with a great haircut (she even curled it for me!) and feeling good that I helped someone expand their education. Highly recommended. read more

Students are usually good, definitely clear your schedule for a couple hours when going because things can be slow moving. Staff on the other hand is terrible with customer service, Alyson Stearns in particular. Rude and unprofessional! Students may make mistakes, that's understandable, but there is no excuse from so called "Director of Education" to be rude to a client under any circumstance. Also when students need assistance from instructors, instructors tend to forget that you're there and not a mannequin. Students are learning but overseers need to do a better job of making sure everything runs smoothly and making clients feel welcome. Music playing also tends to be loud and vulgar. Students may have potential but there is such poor customer service I wouldn't recommend! read more

When I called Toni & Guy located in Cranston, RI I spoke with the front desk personnel named Lindy who was extremely rude and unpleasant. She was very demanding and forceful on the phone and gave off a nasty attitude. I didn't even want to book an appointment there because she was so unprofessional that I took my business elsewhere. I believe that the students and hairstylists are excellent as I have heard many great reviews but Lindy is horrendous and is giving Cranston a bad reputation! read more

But when world traveler hair miracle worker was unavailable for a stretch, skeptical me headed to Toni & Guy for a in-between-keep-it-together-darn-it-Ann-where-are-you haircut. I walk in, hair stylist type #1 cuts my hair, and then a hair professor type #2 steps in, scrutinizes, and makes analytical type comments like, did you check to see if she wanted to be texturized? or you missed this corner, snip snip, here too, and the ever classic, how do you like it? i walked in with no appointment and i was with someone in about ten minutes. i have short but curly hair, so my hair can be quite a challenge considering it has to be cut dry. i went there with pretty specific instructions and a picture. after one review from the instructor, the girl was off on her own. as a hair dressers daughter, i am VERY picky about my haircuts and i have to say i am SO impressed. she really nailed EXACTLY what i wanted. thank you Shannon and staff! read more

My best friend and I just went to get our hair cut there. We both have short and we specifically asked if they were able to create the hairstyle we desired. We were told not to worry and would be taken care of and they were highly capable of meeting our needs. When both of us sat in our chairs and began our cuts our stylists both said that they had NEVER used clippers on short hair. We were told not to worry the instructors would be there to correct and help. In my situation the instructor did the haircut and it was a HORRIBLE job. So bad that I had to go to Atomic (where I should have just gone in the first place) should have known. I have a mohawk or at least I did before I went to Toni and Guy. My sides were on even, half or my head is shaved higher than the other side and she shaved off half of my side burn. They then sent the Director over who tried to fix it but only made it worse. When i finally said i was done and going to Atomic she tried to beg me to fix it. As for my friend, she just needed a trim really. The instructor came over to give her opinion and then let the girl do the cut. She didn't use any of her own equipment, which led to lack of knowledge how to use someone else's stuff. My hair came out ok but when she went to line up my neck I am now left with a 1 inch thick by 4 inch long burn on my neck which she put rubbing alcohol on after she realized what she had done thinking it would help but made it worse. To make matters worse, they asked what they could do to make things better. When I asked for a refund I was told that they don't do that, but offered each of us a free hair cut. Wow! What an amazing experience! I was nervous about going to a hairdresser school to color my hair, but I was pleasantly surprised as to how wrong I was. First off, right when you walk in you would never think you were in Cranston, RI. The atmosphere and the people who work there have such a great vibe about them that you feel like you are in a trendy salon in NYC! My stylist was Mandy and what a gem she was! I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted but could not really explain it that well. I have long blonde hair and wanted partial highlights but not anything too "streaky". Mandy took extra time to make sure she knew exactly what I wanted and made sure to bring over her instructor to bounce ideas off of each other. Mandy was super social and made me feel like we have been friends for years; but still made sure to focus on her work. I don't know anything about hairdressing but what I believe she ended up doing was partial highlights with a clear gloss to brighten it up overall without looking bimbo bleach blonde. My hair came out amazing! Her work was seriously better than almost any salon I have ever been to! The service and quality of work was something that I was not expecting to be this above and beyond. And for $43?! HELLO?! That would have cost me $200 or more at a traditional salon. I didn't believe 20% would be a sufficient tip for the work she did. Tip your student stylist as if they were a real stylist because the work is THAT good! I loved to see that Mandy took great pride in her work and many other students would come over to see what she was doing and complimenting her work. What a great sense of teamwork! The only, and I mean THE ONLY negative thing I would have to say is that Mandy is close to graduating so she won't be there much longer! One word. Disappointed. I was recommended by a friend to go in a get a haircut. I didn't even know they did haircuts so I thought, why not, go be a head of hair for a student to learn on. As a guy, I'm used to a pretty quick haircut. I was forewarned that it would be a bit longer than usual, which was fine. It took about an hour, and the girl who cut my hair did a fantastic job, but the reason for the two stars is the fact that she wasn't instructed to brush my head off with a towel, or shampoo my head to get the strays out, nothing. As I walked over to the desk to pay, I was shaking my head and running my fingers through my hair and it looked like it was raining little brunette hairs. It was horrible, I was covered in my own hair. It was all over my forehead, my neck, everywhere. I actually had to go home and take another shower because I was so itchy from the experience. Now, if they were to change this small thing, I would consider going back. But for $15 for the cut and a $5 tip, I was highly disappointed with the overall customer service experience. read more
