Amazing to watch the skill and grace, and then the unreal finished product. She passed in 1984, and we lost the piece. Re-discovered in an attic box in 2022, this rug has reignited our love for the area, history, and beauty of the artisans at Trujillos. Thank you for a lifelong gift, now also preserved in a leather oil painting incorporating the Bandolier National Monument, all part of our childhood.

We were greeted by his warm and friendly smile. He invited us in and shared the history of his family's weaving business. This is eight generations of Family Weavers in his family. The looms are all set up and we even witnessed a demonstration of using the loom to weave. So interesting! They sell all size blankets, rugs, vests, table runners, purses, pillows and other Native American pottery. Lots of colors to choose from. I found the jewelry and ended up purchasing a gorgeous necklace made by Mark Jimenez. This necklace is part of the Divine Spirit series. I also purchased a blanket and table runners. They can also accommodate special orders by request. I am so glad we took the time to stop and learn about the history of these family weavers. New Mexico is so full of talented artisans. I always learn so much when I visit this state. If you are in this area traveling, be sure to stop by and learn all about the talented Trujillo family.

When I lived in Northern New Mexico back around 1980, Truchas was a remote place that you drove through, but rarely stopped as the locals didn't take too kindly to strangers. Maybe the influx of artists into this area has softened the cultural differences. Anyway, High Road Artisans is a nifty co-op that is worth a stop. When you enter the building, there's a big room in the back and some smaller rooms in front that feature a wide range of local art. I think there's also some studio space in other places. It's a very friendly place and folks here are really nice and helpful. Clean restrooms too. I ended up with a ringed barbed wire piece with a cross, that reminded me of this area's unique Easter-time religious practices. I'd love to come back and take another look.

Highlights include hand woven wool rugs, jewelry, Bill Loyd's bells, traditional weaving, pottery, Gerrard Durand wooden bowls, Sally Delap John paintings, Mary Hockenberry photographs, Betsy William's little plates, Kathryn Blackmun's whimsical tiles and plates, Jean Nichol's watercolors, handmade soap wrapped in high road illustrated papers, gourd art, prints, cards and tchotchkes.

He works mainly in bronze. His sculptures are priced way out of reach for most of us in terms of cost (think tens of thousands of dollars for the larger ones) and scale, but there are smaller pieces both by him and other local artists and photographers that are definitely worth a look and are more accessible to regular folks. The ladies who were there on the Sunday afternoon I visited could not have been nicer or more informative about the artists. One of my favorite galleries in Santa Fe.

My sisters and I took a 2 hour pottery class with Heidi. We were so excited! She came recommended…read morefrom our hotel (5 graces) We told her at the beginning of the class that 2 of us had taken 2 years each of pottery/wheel throwing so it wasn't new to us. Yet she still spent an hour and 40 minutes of the class explaining things to us. We also casually chatted for a bit (20 minutes) when we first arrived while she was setting up (turns out that we were being charged for that time where she was setting up and we were just waiting). By the time she set up all our seats and had given her "instruction" we only had 20 minutes with hands on the clay. After that she took our pieces and did finishing touches on the base (which she took a long time to do while we were again just watching her). We also found out that she charged for this time as well. So the initial 2 hour class turned into a 3 and a half hour class where we only had hands on the clay for 20-30 minutes. It was clear she was dragging time out in order to surprise us with a larger payment charge at the end. I paid 1600$ for 3 people to essentially just watch her. She also does not accept credit cards which is very suspicious to me. I felt so sick to my stomach afterwards and I went straight to my hotel and spoke to the concierge since they recommended her. I felt robbed and sick that I could've donated that money to the less fortunate and it would've been more ethical spending. The concierge spoke to Heidi and she agreed to give us a 50% refund because of how little time we had with the clay. Weeks later she messaged me again to discuss shipping our pieces. Turns out that's another 200$ which somehow isn't considered in the previous cost. I turned down the offer to ship because I truly believe that this studio is a scam. If I could give this experience a 0 star I would but yelp requires at least one star so one it is. I would warn everyone to not take any classes at her studio and avoid it at all costs. It will put a damper on your santa fe trip.
