We let our son's hair grow all winter, to keep his little brain warm. As you can imagine, it gets pretty long by spring! I have to make a confession here; (lowers voice to a whisper) I used to cut my son's hair. There is unfortunate photographic evidence of this. After a particularly disastrous incident which involved him getting hold of the scissors and trying to add something to MY terrible haircut handiwork, we made each other a promise. I won't cut his hair, if he doesn't cut his hair either. So we had to find a stylist that he would A) sit still for and B) like being around. A friend recommended Katie at Tonto. She is just darling. He ADORES her. She listens to what he wants, what MOMMY wants, and wades through a winter's worth of hair to uncover a pretty handsome kid. The way she styles his hair actually FITS him, you know, his face, the shape of his head, etc. And the weird thing is, the cut we get in autumn looks great as it grows out all winter, turning into a cool layered lacrosse sort of style. So right now, his hair is really long and he is getting very frustrated with the tangles, and I wasn't sure how soon we could get an appointment (she sweetly fit us in with VERY little notice......) I said to him, "You know, I could take another crack at cutting your hair, if you want......" He diplomatically replied (trying to mask the horror he was feeling) "Why don't we just wait for Katie. SHE'S a professional!" Oh, and the salon is pretty nice, too. Calm, nicely decorated, good magazines, coffee. Lots of parking. Everyone there is really sweet to the boy, too, which is always a plus for me! read more

I have faithfully followed my fabulous hair stylist Alicia to a few salons over the years, the fourth of which is Tonto. And I hope we're here to stay. The salon is airy, bright and clean with a modern and funky décor. There are lots of chairs but the stylists make their own hours so it can be busy without being overly crowded. There is also an esthetician who does manis, pedis, waxing and facials. Tonto is a great little neighborhood salon where I bet you will find the right stylist to fit your needs and schedule. I faithfully have followed my stylist and now-friend Kristina through a few salons for the last several years, and she's recently landed at Tonto... hopefully, permanently! The salon itself is lovely, with a lot of natural light and fun decor. There's quite a few stylists, but the layout makes it feel really open. The art is really interesting. There's plenty of parking. They have really fantastic product. And most importantly for me, Kristina is there! She does fabulous cuts and color-- I'm loyal for a reason. This isn't one of the trendiest salons in Denver, but I'm sure it's one of the best. Wholeheartedly recommended! read more

The salon, well, I can tell you it is near Papou's (yumsville), has those one cup coffee things and a decent magazine selection, but I don't come for the atmosphere - I come for Erin Ferris. ERIN FERRIS - WEDDING HAIR GODSEND! I found Erin after searching obsessively for quite awhile. I was a very excited but indecisive bride... and she was so patient with me. We tried about 4 or 5 styles for my practice session, and then a few days before my wedding I changed my mind completely, and she was totally chill and reassuring ("We will make sure you love your hair!!). On my actual wedding day, I told her I wanted some kind of loose braid tucked into a bun, and she created something so much more. I surrendered my full faith to her on the morning of my wedding and she took off on all her hair-glory! I was obsessed with my wedding hair. She is such a gem I drove from Boulder to Denver 2 days before the wedding just to get a blow-out from her for our rehearsal dinner- which was gorgeous as well. Also, her personality is very on-point and having her in my bridal room felt like being with an old family friend. Erin also introduced me to Tiffany from Blush Artistry who did my wedding make-up. I love working with gals who work together and know each other well. That worked great because we actually did my hair and make-up trials on the same day at Tonto Salon. It was a wonderful place to get pampered for awhile. Oh, and I also got a spray tan at Tonto two days before my wedding... I guess you can say Tonto is like a 1-stop shop for a bride. Visited for the first time last month and the salon is a total gem! The space is spacious, well-lit, and welcoming. I immediately felt the energetic vibe. I came here following my amazing stylist, Maggie Simmons. She has been my stylist for years and I recommend her to anyone. She is phenomenal with color! I change things up frequently and love her taste and style. Even better, her personality rocks and she really is the sweetest. brandy manning at salon tonto is amazing! I decided to have micro bladding done. As a breast cancer survivor my eyebrows never really grew back. I decided to do something for me but was super nervous and unsure of this procedure. Brandy came highly recommended so I called and got in to see her. I am so happy with the results they are perfect! I have been having Tony cut and color my hair for over 12 years. He was recommended by a friend who is just as faithful to him as I am, and we both have a network of several women who ONLY have Tony or Holly at Tonto touch our hair! The salon is great - lots of parking, great support staff, nice atmosphere. But the stylists are exceptional and Tonto's best selling point. Personally, I think Tony Westenhaver is the best stylist in Denver, and one of the nicest people you will ever meet. I love this salon. The vibe is relaxed and friendly, and it's surprising and unexpected given its location in a strip mall. They carry luxury hair care but manage to avoid the snootiness of some places that carry the same. Devon is a find. She is pleasant and easy to connect to and she listens and gives haircuts that fit your needs. Everyone seems friendly and they manage to keep prices reasonable. read more

Kutz by Katie - She ROCKS! I am never that faithful to my hairdressers - I get bored and always looking for a change - but I am happy to say that Katie is awesome and I am here to stay. Her colour is amazing - it always looks so natural, and my hair is a hard match, it has so many natural highlights. Similar to the other review, I only came across Tonto because my stylist, Erin Ferris, moved here. Erin is the best - she gets five stars. I highly recommend her. She is not only an amazing stylist, she is hilarious and just a cool person. The salon itself is really spacious and contemporary. As I write this review, I am still shaking as I have just left a salon where I got cussed at in front of my child after being with Johanna Hanson for 2 years... Truth. I should've left her about six months ago, but we used to get it right, and I thought maybe I wasn't explaining myself clearly. The times she made me sit and wait while she finished up other clients. The time she gave my son a horrible haircut - figured she just doesn't do little boys that well. His cute medium length mop was butchered. Went to a Great Clips for a $10 fix. The time she lopped 2 inches off the front of my angled bob when I clearly said don't touch the front...hell, she always cut off way too much when I was trying to grow it out. She's always been a little colorful, I donno. It's like a bad relationship - you stay when you remember the good times. Anyway. I had brown hair and blonde highlights. I had regrowth, too much red in it (I HATE RED!) and I was tired of frying my hair. My hair turns a little auburn in the sun - ick. I hemmed and hawwed -- do I do ombre? Do I do peek a boo? Do I make it one color - brown? I sent Johanna some photos of ideas of the next phase of The Hair could look like. One ombre looked I liked was Cameron Diaz's, but I wanted a more neutral tone on top. That's what we went with. Well, after coming to rescue me from the waiting area (22 mins after my appt was scheduled - she's always late) after she was done blowdrying and curling a client's hair (she never does that for me - must be extra? I have to style my own at the style station). I show her the photo. We even go outside so we can see my hair in natural light. She says this is doable. I tell her I'm nervous, repeating, neutral! Neutral! I've been cursed with blonde eyebrows and natural hair that gets brassy if left untouched. I wanted something that looked neutral and natural. Low patience, kind of youthful, but still sassy. An hour later, I'm staring at an ombre'd head. The ombre was well blended, but my roots were AUBURN. The ONE time I ever tried to do red in the last 5 years was supposed to be strawberry blonde and she didn't get that right either (yes, I had a photo), so I figured it really was best to just keep repeating "neutral" over and over and banish all warmth, period. I have pale skin Must've said it a thousand times. I said, "Do you see auburn? I do," and she says, "Nope! I see only brown!" Well, I don't know what to at that point because it's not awful. It' darker and redder, but not wretched. She says that'll be $130. I left. I go to the car and have a blaring auburn head staring back at me. The salon has REALLY low lighting and you can't see for sh*t in there. Instead of crying, I text her that I'm seeing a lot of auburn. Later, Johanna texts and asks for a photo. I'm driving, so I snap one in a parking lot. By the time I get home, it's low light out. It's not as obvious, but it's there. I put a pic on Facebook, hoping to feel better. I curled it and darkened my eyebrows, so it's not so bad. It would be cute if that's what I asked for. She says come back that night and we can fix it. IF I don't come back now, I have to wait two weeks. I'm nervous about her touching my hair, but a consult can't hurt. It's been two years, after all. Mentally, I know I'm never going back after this. So I tell my son to cut his playdate short; we're going back. It's 7pm. She says be there by 7:45. She shows up at 7:53, of course. So I go in and she proceeds to yell at me. Yes, yell at me. Hands on hips, finger in face, huffing and puffing, using words like "crap ass photo" in front of my 8 year old kid, saying I didn't know what I wanted, I didn't know what I was talking about (actually cut me off and said, "YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT! I AM A PROFESSIONAL!") and she could put grey in my hair and I would still see red. "Can't I ever make you happy?" she exclaimed. What are we, dating? The F? I tell her not to yell at me and she lowers her voice for about twenty seconds and it goes back up again. Again with the hand on hip. "You send me this crap ass photo that's not even real and put a sassy one on Facebook!" There's no one in the salon but her, me, and my son. I really wish I had a camera. I tell her I don't feel comfortable having her do my hair again after she's screaming and she said she wouldn't, anyway. I tell her a bad review is going up and by that time we've both lost our cool. My son has never seen me like that before and couldn't believe this lady was yelling at his mom. She's not giving me my check back, she's cussing, she's yelling, she's telling me there's something wrong with me...You are SO unprofessional, I tell her, and I make sure to let her know I think she's crazy. STAY AWAY. Don't trust unprofessionals with scissors! Update: Today, my horse trainer asked why I dyed my hair red. :( In the sunlight, it's very, very copper and everything I didn't want! read more

It was my first time there, and possibly we did not communicate sufficiently, but the result is too short and possibly the most unflattering, unstylish cut I've ever received. I have been going to Johanna for over two years. I followed her to Tonto from a different salon. She does a great job with my color. I have two small children at home and am a typical frazzled mother. Johanna has ALWAYS been so flexible with my schedule (ie. 7am appts. on a Sunday... who else does that?) Love the quality of the color and cuts I receive. Johanna is very knowledgeable about all the products in the salon and takes the time to explain to me why a product may or may not be good for my particular hair. LOVE her! read more
