I had a very unpleasant experience this week at this salon. I scheduled for an appt with a JR Stylist because I did not want to pay $80 for a Master stylist. The Jr was $60. I had to make a payment of 1/2 the fee for my haircut which I did that day. I came in and told the young woman who I was and that I was to see (don't want to name her because it is not her fault). In a few minutes a stylist stylist came out and called my name. I had never been here before, so didn't know anyone. I followed her back and got a trim, which was fine. I paid with my CC and also had a coupon for new customers. The total was $38 and I put the charge through. I did not do the math right then, but it seemed reasonable. When I came home, I remembered I had already paid $30, so looked at the tkt. They had charged me $80. I called immediately and explained I had just been in and had requested a Jr stylist for $60. The woman said, yes, we got you mixed up with another customer who was also new and had the same name as you. I guess they didn't check our last names. I said I thought I should get a refund for the difference of $20 since it was not fault for the mix-up. She told me she could Not give me a refund, but she could make sure I got the correct stylist next time! I just kept trying to reason with her and she said she'd have someone call me about it. They never did. I thought it was very unprofessional and they obviously don't put a priority on serving customers and ensuring they are happy with the service. there was no effort to reconcile this with me. read more

Great experience with this salon! Sometimes the urge strikes you and strikes you HARD to get your hair cut, and that was me earlier today. Thankfully TJ Salon was able to get me in this morning, and they were super flexible with my booking process (unfortunately I had to push back the time due to my previous commitment running over, and they were incredibly accommodating). Sam was the hair stylist/beautician/wonderful human I saw, and y'all - never in my life have I gotten a more attentive haircut! She was very detail oriented, and you could tell she genuinely wanted to make it a great experience and a great cut. 10/10 would recommend. I came here for a Yelp event and was treated to the salon's excellent hair stylists and in-house masseuse. The staff are friendly, client-focused, and professional. Very disappointed. Just moved to town looking for a salon & spa and thought this would fit the bill. Talked at length with the front desk to book a perm stressing that I needed someone who does them all the time. They insisted the person they recommended did them all the time. Well two and a half hours and $125 later I have straight, straw hair. The only thing visible from my perm is the curler marks in my hair right by my forehead and on the right side. Why would they lie? As She was finishing up I saw my stylist READING THE DIRECTIONS for my perm. Now I will not return for nails, facials, massage or anything else because I CANNOT TRUST THEM! I've called several times asking for a refund and no one has returned my call. read more

The atmosphere and staff here are exceptional, however my blowout was disappointing. The interior is sleek and modern and of course has the amazing Aveda smell. There's also a little café inside where you can wait with a drink or snack. I've been to my share of blow out facilities and Tonya Jones Salon (English Village) was the most expensive and my least favorite outcome. I paid $65.00 for the blowout with heat plus tip. My friend and I both had reservations for about a month to get our hair done for our friend's wedding. My worker was super nice and listened to what I wanted (curls/beachy wave) but I left with just my ends curled and poorly sprayed. I also started way before my friend and ended after her - and I have thinner/less hair! By the time the wedding rolled around, I had to redo my curls and re-spray everything to hold. This experience made me wish that I would have just done my own hair. Tonya Jones is so close to my house, that the location is a better convenience than most. My first visit will not deter me to come again, but I will definitely make sure that next time we spray the heck out of my hair with some extra hold hairspray. read more

I booked a haircut and style online. The stylist was late for the appointment (which is not the main point and is often forgivable if it's because she is taking time and care with her clients--but because of my experience, it was something I paid attention to). When the stylist came to meet me, she asked if I were there for a blowout. I was confused and told her no, it was for a haircut and style. I wanted to keep most of the length, but get rid of bulk in my hair. I showed her a picture of the ever-so-popular beachy waves look as an inspiration and said I loved curly but could never get it right so usually ended up blow drying it straight when I didn't put it in a bun or ponytail. Long story short: she trimmed the ends of my hair, didn't remove much bulk, and blow-dried it straight. It was essentially a trim with a blowout (to me, this is a loose definition of "haircut and style"). My hair usually takes 60-90 minutes to cut and style due to its length and thickness, and she was done in 30-40 minutes. It looked decent, but it wasn't what I asked for. As a mother of small children, I have very little time to pamper myself. When I go to the beauty salon, I would hope there would be at least some effort to style my hair the way I'd like so for one day (!), even if just my husband sees it, I can feel like a million bucks. I left feeling like I overpaid. I also know it is possible to get my hair to look like the picture I showed her because other stylists elsewhere have been able to do it in the past. This was the second time I'd been to the Tonya Jones Salon at English Village. The first time was about a year ago with a different stylist who also left me feeling disappointed. I should've learned my lesson then, but I thought I'd give it another chance since it's near my house. Unfortunately, I'll be looking for a new salon. read more

I visited this salon during an event hosted B metro magazine recently and all I can say is WOW! First of all, I would've never thought of hosting an event that serves dinner and drinks at a salon, but it was amazing. The event took place throughout the facility, with dinner and two bars available for drinks downstairs and spa service offerings upstairs. Cantina Laredo of Uptown offered a buffet style dinner, which was pretty good. The guacamole was fantastic. I took advantage of the chair massage and eyebrow waxing upstairs. Both staff members I worked with put off very relaxing vibes and were very helpful. The facility has that amazingly herby, fresh Aveda smell throughout. I would give anything for my home to smell exactly like this. I will definitely be back for a full visit! read more

Booked an express mani pedi here. Had to re do my nail shape because the lady didn't ask what shape and cut them down to the skin and didn't even clean under my nails. Then since she gave me a 34 second hand massage she tried charging me for full manicure which was totally ridiculous. Luckily her colleague ended up re shaping them. Asked for a blowout and was told the price. Ended up getting a half up do and was not told the price jumps $15 for that and honestly the 7 minutes to take my mostly dry hair, curl it and then tease and pin it was not at all worth the $55 it ended up being. (English Village location) I was in Birmingham for a wedding, and on a whim decided to get bangs -- a style I haven't sported since I was a teenager -- at Tonya Jones. Things could have (obviously) gone terribly, but I am so happy with my bangs, and the experience was wonderful! The salon itself is clean and beautiful, and my friend and I were offered complimentary beverages at their little bar upon arrival. I can't believe this place has been in my backyard since I moved to Alabama and I just found it! First visit yesterday and I will definitely be going back. I am African American with natural hair and it can be hard to find someone who knows what they're doing. Briana did a color rinse and blow out. Wonderful experience and my hair is shiny and soft. The atmosphere is fabulous. I had two free glasses of wine and enjoyed a wonderful hair service. Booking is convenient online. This is definitely my new salon. I have been going to Elyse at English Village for a while now. She always does an amazing job on my cut and color and I love the service at the salon. I would give her a 5 star and the salon about a 3. It's a great salon BUT - yesterday I was off work and scheduled a few things for the day (pretty spaced out). She did half of my color and then they RAN OUT OF COLOR. I was pretty upset because I knew at that point it would take twice as long. I missed my next appointment (that was scheduled 3 hours after my hair appointment) and was late to my sons ball game. We had to wait on someone to go get color from the other salon. Which is absolutely ridiculous. I'm an understanding person usually but that's like going to a dog store and them being out of dog food or treats. That's what you're there for. In my business, customer service is top knotch and an absolute must. So with that, I was surprised that management didn't do a better job of apologizing for the serious inconvenience. Elyse was very apologetic and did everything she could, but I understand that it's managements fault for not having stock. .... by the way-there were about 10 other people getting foils. Like I said, I love Elyse's style and technique on my hair, but if I had been a new customer of someone there I probably would never go back. read more
