Wanted to compare some local trucks so I grabbed some dogs from Tony's. First thing was they had the Manhattan Special soda. I love that stuff so I was pumped. Nice kick from these onions but I will say in the Newark area I had other onions I preferred more. Won't say from where, don't want to pit one against another...plus now you have to go looking for them and give these trucks some business ;) The chili cheese dog was solid, really enjoyed that one. There is another truck (different one than earlier) who I feel has better chili, but this was a winner anyway. I'd definitely grab a bite here again. read more

I've been coming here for almost 40 years. It's not the same as the old Tonys nothing ever will be, but it's pretty close. The original owner sold the business to the guy that used to deliver the hotdogs to him and he's carried the torch ever since. The onions and chili are still great. The hotdog is a little skinnier, that's because I think they stopped making the old hotdogs which were called Golden D brand. Anyway, I will continue to come here and support this business when I'm in the area. The truck has been there since 1968. read more

OK Gourmet Dining turns to food truck for lunch LOL. Today was the day we compared long standing Favorite Tony's many years under new ownership to Chris's Red Hots (Next review). My father for 40 years also here in Newark Owned multiple hot dog food trucks and myself worked them for years so If I'm eating "DIRTY WATER DOGS" I'm going to try the two long standing that I remember as I haven't had a hot dog off a truck in countless years. Parked on Corner of Branch Brook Park Lake Street & Park Ave in the Old 1st (NORTH) word of Newark sits Tony's. Today we keep it simple with Hot dogs, Hot onions others with Sauerkraut. Mind you almost all trucks here use same hot dog distributor so in theory the only thing different should be the onions. Today dogs were Hot, rolls fresh, onions good but now WOW sauerkraut hot and fresh not burnt as well. Lots of other toppings available but I am a traditionalist. I finally had a Tony's Hot Dog! And...I loved it! We went at about noon on a Wednesday afternoon and we got lucky. The line wasn't long. I got two dogs -- they were delicious. Not too salty! Perfectly crisp. I don't know how to describe it but you want you dog to pop when you first bite it. The bread was soft but not soggy. The last dog I had in NY was in old dry bread. This was a great experience and I'll be back again. I want to try the sausage (hot). The service was charming. I met the founding father's son. The service was quick and cordial. Top notch Hot Dog truck!! If you are in the area, and want a hot dog, this place is for you. I love coming here. Hot dogs are great! Service is wonderful! Plenty of parking. My father in law loves this place, so he is usually the one to pick up dogs from here. I usually stick with the typical dog with ketchup and kraut, but they have a few interesting toppings that I did not know about. Some of their "non-standard" toppings include potatoes, potato sticks, hot and sweet onions, hot and sweet chili! My wife and father in law love their hot stuff, but I have to say that their sweet options are just as good! Sweet chili and cheese, and sweet chili and sweet onions are money! They also love the big sausage, but I personally find it a bit spicy! It does have great flavor, but a lingering heat. They also have a potato cup, which I highly recommend! You can get any toppings that you want. They have plenty of parking around the truck. And now due to covid, they have 2 lines, and 2 windows open. They also have a divider between the 2 lines, and the staff in the truck really enforces 1 line as well as social distancing. All in all a great hot dog truck! My favorite hot dog ever got two hot dogs one with kraut and one with the best hot onions ever onions are good Kraut was all right one dog was nice and red and one dog was greenish sitting in the water too long turns out they switch to skinless dogs Which don't last in the water don't have the pop you took away the fun of eating Tony's hotdogs they suck. Co-worker and I needed hot dogs for lunch today because it was beautiful...not many more of these days this year. This was my first time here (still working on the nj.com top 25 list and this was #4 on the list and our 15th crossed off the list...ten to go) and was impressed with these dogs...hell, I KNEW they'd be great because there were cops in line with us - never been someplace with local police where the food sucked...NEVER! Ok...So I had three dogs today...and I'm sorry, but for dirty water dogs you can never go wrong with Sabrett's. Anyway, one with Chili/cheese, one with chili/kraut/mustard, and one Superdog (Chili/cheese/hot onions/ mustard/kraut and maybe relish). Their chili is really good...not quite as good as Curbside Cafe's chili in Parsippany, but right up there with a great texture and wonderful flavor. The Superdog was almost TOO much 'stuff' on the dog, but it was tasty just the same...and the hot/spicy onions have a NICE kick. I'm not usually a huge fan of the dirty water dogs (I like the flavor of a fried or grilled dog better), but I would come back here in a heartbeat. They all seem to carry your standard natural casing, all beef hot dog, in this case Best's Provisions, also from Newark and they all offer a plethora of toppings from just mustard to chili ,onions and cheese, yeah they offer ketchup but everyone around the truck will point and laugh if you ask for it. Oh and no they don't offer a bacon-wrapped frank with teriyaki sauce and pineapple or a bacon-wrapped dog with avocado and sour cream. These guys offer a boiled, Best's Provision's natural casing all beef dog with a good selection of toppings.
