This is not a solar review. It is a review of the service Top Hat offers to clean your chimneys. My chimney was cleaned by Top Hat back during July or August - who can remember when it is already hot as blue blazes (I think it was August). So, I started a fire and the room and house smelled like smoke. I couldn't see an obvious place that smoke was leaking. I called and spoke to the manager who came right over and evaluated it and thought it all looked fine and that maybe it all escaped when I built the fire. ..Well, that night it was horrible. I couldn't see clearly - I opened the door and smelled "camp fire" - One thing all of you should do it purchase a carbon monoxide indicator - I was afraid of the smoke and had been very sick the previous day so I ran to get monitors and they did show a tiny bit of gas but way below anything scary. That night I called and left a couple messages - obviously afraid and upset. The Owner came out driving all the way from Montgomery Creek! He climbed up and found the flu topper completely plugged (even though smoke was coming out). He climbed up and cleaned it then came in and cleaned the flu part in the house - (with some hot coals. He was great - the company stood behind their work and I appreciate that very much. I have had solar for 4 years. My inverter has been replaced 3 times. Although Top Hat replaced it (as they should) Terry the owner acted like he was doing me a favor. He doesn't guarantee the products he buys from other companies. I was without solar production for 4 months because of Top Hats service and product. I now have a 1,000 dollar PG@E bill that Terry says is my problem even though his choice of product failed. If you are looking into getting solar, I would skip this company. ***BUYER BEWARE!*** After our home was hit by the Carr Firestorm in 2018 I decided to Buy Local in support of my community and the economy in getting a solar energy system on my new roof and a smart battery back-up. Top Hat should stay with wood stoves and not take on the Solar market - especially when they screwed-up the very important PGE/SGIP paperwork multiple times, denied me my rebate for nearly a year, and refused to properly communicate with me... a customer who spent tens of thousands on an otherwise good technology. The worst thing is the seemingly un-caring, flat-affect management, but I will say, the best thing about this company were the laborers hired to perform the initial installation in extreme heat - I was SO appreciative of those surely underpaid workers, that I regularly provided plenty of cold drinks and insisted on rest breaks. ***Perhaps their experiment in using me to learn how to get into the solar business has improved their knowledge base somewhat... I wanted to like Top Hat. We have used them before a few years ago and they did a good job (we thought) at the time so we used them again 8/2021. Big mistake. We signed a contract with them 8/2021. We had to keep bothering them for an install date, and they installed in 12/2021. That's when the issues began. *The Good* The actual ground-mount array was installed well, with clean installation and no visual issues, and it was done just like we wanted. A+ on that part. The electrical was done well, so far as we haven't had any issues I have found. *The Bad* The follow-through in a word: horrible. Here's a list of the issues we faced. Normally, we wouldn't care about issues because the company fixes them and does their job right? Not so on my project: * Top Hat couldn't be bothered to stay on top of the PGE interconnect process. I must have sent 5 or 6 emails over the past 4 months bothering Top Hat to fix the issue. They finally did, but only after much pestering which I shouldn't have had to do. *Communication is almost non-existent. I had to reach out each and every time to get an "update" or remind them to finish their job! I believe the issue is organizational skills within the administration of the company. *They tore up my yard with trenching and promised to fix it later and have the "dirt work crew" come back out. That hasn't happened and I doubt it ever will. I have a half-filled in trench in my front lawn and they left a broken sprinkler line and sprinkler head lying on the ground (so it wasn't just a hidden thing). I fixed the sprinkler myself because I didn't want to wait for Top Hat to maybe come out after lots of bothering. *They applied for and obtained permits from the county. They had the inspector come out after install, but Top Hat failed the inspection. That was months ago. I have asked Top Hat multiple times what's the issue and let's get it fixed. I don't even know what the issue is because they won't tell me, and the permit is still not finalized. *We used Enphase micro-inverters. They didn't hook them up for FOUR MONTHS of bothering them to do so. When they finally came back out four months after install to connect the monitoring system, they did it wrong. They still haven't fixed it, and it appears either 2 panels or 2 inverters are not working and they haven't fixed it after two requests. *We found out our previous installation they did for us they never completed the PGE paperwork for interconnect. We would have never known if it wasn't for using them again. They did fix it because they had to fix it for PGE to approve this second project. I guess that was a good thing. All in all, I wanted to like them and have another smooth transaction. I wanted to have a trusted solar company for when I do my battery project eventually. I love finding great companies I trust who do a good job and who I use again and again. I will never use them again and caution my friends about them. They had the second-to-lowest price I obtained after four estimates, so it is not a factor of being the lowest bid. I'm not trying to pick apart minor issues like the concrete they fixed after digging up our sidewalk is rough and not smooth, whatever. I'm only trying to fairly list major headaches, some of which are still not resolved 6 months later! read more

I visited Top Hat a few months ago for help with some cords to connect my panels up. They took the time to ask all about what I was doing and even drew up diagrams for me. They offered to stay overtime to complete my cords even though it was a small sale for them. As the project evolved I continued going back to Top hat for odds and ends and they were always very helpful and gave all I need and more. I came away with the sense of this being an organization that cares about people and getting the job done right. With wiring solar you are dealing with a lot more watts than just simply wiring an outlet or a light in the house. It needs to be done right or you can really damage equipment. Top Hat finally came out and made things right. Not only did they fix what I asked, but they caught something that was improperly with installed originally--power lines were not adequately sealed in an in-ground pull box, resulting in the wires shorting and turning my inverters on and off, repeatedly. I'm annoyed that something else was done poorly in the original message installation, but thrilled the person they sent was aware of the clicking and had the integrity to investigate and fix the problem! Honestly, had this been the person they sent from the get-go, I probably would have had an entirely different experience. read more

We used Top Hat Energy for our solar installation. We first started researching solar during the summer and had one of the start-up solar companies send a sales person out to our house. The sales person was a young guy that was likely recently 'trained' in solar. He spent over an hour giving his sales pitch and finally he gave us the quote. He wasn't able to answer all of my questions to my satisfaction. I wanted to shop around and do more research and someone recommended Top Hat to me. I called them and they were able to look up my address and give me a rough quote over the phone based on my usage. It was a few thousand dollars less than my first quote. I could tell right away that they knew what they were doing and I told them I was interested in getting a formal quote. They put me in contact with one of the engineers, Jeremy and he sent me a quote using the same equipment as the solar company used. The quote was much more detailed than the big solar company so I knew exactly what I would be getting. He sent one of his guys out to do a shade analysis and he spent around 40 minutes on our roof getting exact measurements. The solar company didn't do that. He then modified our quote which ended up being $4,000 less than the other company with 5 more panels than the other company was planning on installing. We signed the contract at the end of July and our panels were installed within two months. It only took them a couple of days to install and they had the inspector out the next day. The job was signed off without a problem. It took two weeks for City of Redding to 'Interconnect' our system to the grid. Our neighbor down the street had their panels installed at the exact same time as us by one of the big solar companies. We asked them about a month later how they liked having solar and they told us they still weren't connected because it didn't pass inspection. I am so happy we went with a local, well respected company to do our solar installation. I would definitely recommend them to anyone! Jeremy has been extremely responsive through the whole process. He responds really quickly to emails and was always available for a phone call. After our system was live for about a month, the inverter received an error which I received by email. I found out then, that Top Hat received the same error and Jeremy contacted me to tell me they would be out the next morning to resolve it. It turns out it just needed a software upgrade and we were back up and running. I was very impressed that they are continuing to monitor our system. Our energy production has been great! My wife and I shopped around for solar companies to install a roof top system out in Wildwood, which is as remote as you might imagine. We worked with Jeremy Huft, and his team made it really clear and easy what we were getting. The 33 solar panels have worked great (through 3 winters) and provided about 20% more energy than I expected. Savings have been tremendous, and I have really enjoyed being able to track the kilowatts being generated each day (and the website stores data for month to month or year to year comparison). We recently sold the house, and the buyer was very interested and pleased to have solar. It pays for itself in just a few years, and then "keeps on giving."
