If you go and see one show this year I would highly recommend this one. It was one of the best shows I have seen for a long time.
Based on the classic Fred and Ginger film of the same name - Top Hat is a brilliantly crafted stage show with singing, dancing, tapping, comedy, love, mistaken identity - the works! Jerry Travers (currently played by Gavin Lee who I remember fondly as Bert in Mary Poppins and is fabulous) is an American dancer who comes to London to appear in a new show. He meets Dale Tremont (currently played by Kirsten Beth Williams) and tries to woo her but somehow forgets to introduce himself. Dale is also being pursued by an Italian fashion designer and Dale mistakes Jerry to be Horace, the husband of her dear friend Madge and manager to Jerry and is maddened by his blatant disregard for his wife. With a trip to venice and a lot fun and frolics and a butler who can only be described as the best damn butler ever - going to extreme and hilarious lengths to fix up the mess, all finally reaches the correct conclusion.
As an audience we are wooed and entertained with such perfect precision and wonderful glamour, and always a laugh and a giggle to be had. The dances are beautiful, the tap routines are brilliant, the costumes are elegant and rich and make you just want to dress up and go dancing when you leave the theatre. I cannot praise this show enough. I was genuinely satisfied by the show and would definitely return to see it again and again.
Familiar songs would be 'Top Hat and Tails' 'Dancing Cheek to Cheek' which are classic songs by Irving Berlin and have been sung the world over.
But like I said before, a wonderful show and if you are at a loose end as to what to see I would definitely choose this show.
