It's basically a ham and cheese sandwich, but boy oh boy it was probably one of the best ham and cheese sandwiches I've had in a while. The sauce they used was magical and the cheese was delish :) - Banana muffin was great too. Not too pricey for such a good quality muffin! Drinks: 4.5 - They use Toby's estate coffee- a really decent quality coffee. Great set up and loved the extra chocolate sprinkles on top. Service: 4 - French servers! They were friendly and they did their jobs well. Atmosphere: 4.5 - Nice little brunch set up. Comfortable and soothing music. Ideal place to be at in the morning to just relax, do some reading, and chill with friends. Space was also big enough to host group gatherings. Misc: 4.5 - Nice location (located on a street that's not too busy and hectic, but still in the city). A little pricey, but for the quality of food we got, it was totally worth it. Thwarted by the challenge, we opted instead for one of their cakes, which was nice enough. The coffee was average, and when we asked if they took Eftpos, we were informed that they did not, and that the nearest ATM was a 15 minute walk away. The problem with Cafe Ella lies not only in its haphazard menu, but more so in the fact that it can't beat its competition. With the bustling Shortlist cafe only two doors down, any passer-by would look at the dreary, empty Cafe Ella and suspect that they must be doing something wrong. It's not bad though, it sort of depends on who the barista is on the day. (Denise is great.) I will say this for Ella: it's super friendly, and the chalk-board menu is iconic (same as its sister cafe, Cafe Giulia). The menu is not as extensive as Cafe Giulia, but given the kitchen is small, they do a good job. Cafe Ella's servings of food are always generous, messily presented, and fresh. The muffins and cakes are rich and delicious, and they do a good blueberry bagel with ricotta. They don't have Eftpos, but there's a pub 1 minute away with an ATM. Cafe Ella is not as self-consciously trendy as one of its neighbours, Shortlist, but the staff at Ella make an effort to remember your name (and your coffee order). Cafe Ella has a lovely, quiet upstairs area and they're happy for you to sit there and read for hours. It's a place where you can feel at home.

I'm sharing this review because I was going through old posts and saw a photo of the dish I had that night and immediately said out to my sister "THIS WAS THE BEST THING I'VE EVER EATEN!" and when I checked my caption from that night it literally the said the same thing. I think about this place often, I'll be back next time I'm in Sydney! The staff were genuinely so great that night, I remember them being a huge contributing factor us enjoying our time there. I don't remember what it was called, but I got the milk bread thing with ferrero roche, chocolate ice cream, and fairy floss - absolutely so delicious and so much fun!
