Do not use them! Poor communication-they don't answer the phone, had to send multiple emails asking for a phone call 30 minutes prior to delivery. Workers showed up in filthy muddy shoes without booties, refusing to remove their shoes and proceeded to track in mud and dirt all over my stairs and white carpet. They loaded the car with the tables, then called us while we were on our way home, claiming they had missed giving us some parts. When we returned to the site, they took the tables out of the car and said they would not rent to us. Apparently the owner was upset by the tone of the emails we had sent him earlier that week asking if he could rent additional tables/following up. I had a terrible experience with Top Notch in June, 2017. They almost ruined my wedding. I'm going to try to roughly bullet out all the mistakes they made, so it's easier for you to read. I've also attached a number of pictures to explain our story. Al, the owner of the company, claims employee sabotage as the reason for all of the errors on our wedding day and offered a 10% discount. You can judge for yourself whether you think that's fair. -INITIALLY SHOWED UP 2 1/2 HRS LATE. I had a proposal with Top Notch to deliver our tents, tables and chairs for my wedding @ 9am. When no one had shown up or called by 10am, I had to call multiple times to find out that they were running late (they didn't bother to call me). Top Notch eventually showed up at 11:30am. -DID NOT HAVE THE STAFF NEEDED FOR SET UP. After being 2 1/2 hours late, they showed up with two guys to set up 5 tents, 28 tables, and 180 chairs (my proposal included payment for all set up). Al's employees told me it would take at least 2 hrs to set things up. Since they were late and didn't show up with enough staff, our wedding party and family were forced to help unload, assemble and set up. This meant we were not able to do the wedding photographs we had planned, but if we had not helped we would not have had the tents, table, chairs and decorations up in time for our event start time. -DID NOT BRING THE CENTER POLES. Midway through set up, Al's staff informed me the tent center poles were not on the truck. I spoke with Al at this point and his solution was to send his staff back to the facility to retrieve the poles. It was a long drive and they said they would be back by 2:30pm, the same time our guests were expected for our 3pm ceremony. At this point Al's staff left and we were left to assemble the tents as best we could by ourselves (see pictures), so that when they returned all they had to do was to attach the center poles (the last step). -TOP NOTCH IS LATE AGAIN. Instead of arriving back at 2:30pm as they said, they were again late by almost an hour and a half!! They arrived close to 4pm, and like the last time did not bother calling to inform us they were running late. While they were gone, it rained, our wedding programs were damaged and our guests had to try to seek cover under trees instead of the tents we paid Top Notch more than $3000 for. When Top Notch finally installed the center poles, I was standing at the altar during my wedding ceremony (outside of the tents), reading my wedding vows. As you can probably expect, I'm extremely dissatisfied with Top Notch. I wish I could say it ended there and after the wedding was over Al was very apologetic, offered a refund, and we all went on our way. Unfortunately, as I stated at the beginning, Al came up with a wild story about his employees intentionally trying to sabotage the event and offered us a 10% discount. I declined the refund and chose to write this review instead. Obviously, I don't recommend this company. However, if you do choose them, don't make the mistake I did and pay in full up front (as they insist). That way, at least you won't have to fight with them afterwords for a refund if they screw up your event as badly as they did my wedding. read more

The only reason I'm giving two stars instead of one is because the wedding wasn't actually ruined, but it came close. The first problem is that the tables and chairs showed up two hours late, which made it impossible to set up before guests arrived. The drivers blamed traffic, but traffic in Chicagoland is just a condition of the area--every single other vendor we used, including ones traveling from much farther away, prepared for that and arrived on time. Frankly, I don't think it was the drivers' fault--I think it's a much bigger problem with the company based on the overall lack of professionalism and communication. The second problem was that communication was almost impossible. It was impossible to get anyone on the phone, which meant back-and-forth emails, which were usually dismissive and only one line. I reached out a couple times with questions, and each time the response was curt to the point of rude. My questions generally weren't answered--instead, they would just send a revised contract--not necessarily representing what we asked for. They also charged our credit card well before the date stipulated by the contract. Save yourself a major headache and don't go with this company unless they make some major changes. read more

I used Top Notch Rental's services for my sisters wedding last weekend. I rented a BEAUTIFUL lighted backdrop and a stage for the head table. The backdrop and stage really dressed up the room and helped make for a gorgeous reception. I called and talked to a wonderfully charming man named Al who walked me through and helped me decide exactly how large of a backdrop and how big of a stage I needed. Al was extremely helpful and patient with me as I was completely frazzled and not sure of everything I needed. Al and Paul came and set up and took down the backdrop and stage in an extremely timely matter. They were also very flexible with me at the end of the night when the event went a little longer than expected. All of the materials I rented from them were brand new and in "top notch" shape. This is a company that truly cares about their customers and it shows. I would recommend Top Notch to anybody that wants their special event to go off without a hitch. READ THE CONTRACT!!! Please do not pay a dime to Top Notch Rental Services without first reading, understanding and clarifying the terms, costs, services, and customer obligations. The TNRS proudly team claims to have created one of the simplest contracts in the industry -- so read it, perform your due diligence. Ask questions. I didn't. It cost me hundreds. I mistakenly believed that a tent configuration I rented in 2016 could be duplicated in 2019. Shame on me. On delivery day, the desired setup was impossible and the discussion with the TNRS team regarding solutions was frustrating. I accept responsibility for the situation, but Al refused to share any responsibility and refused to negotiate any refund for materials and services not provided. Clearly, he is more attentive to the cash and the contract than to customer satisfaction and retention. I lost my money and learned my lesson. There are other rental services in the Chicago area. We used this company for a tent and tables/chairs for a graduation party. They gave us a drop off time of 7am-7pm then showed up at 8:30pm in the dark. Al quickly measured the area and said the tent wouldn't fit. I asked him to measure another area of the yard and again he said it would not fit. Told us for $250 more we could get a tent that fit but he didn't know if he could even get it to us by Saturday (this is Thursday night). We did not get the tent and we still paid for it! On the day before our event, they came out and said that the tent wouldn't fit in our yard. Then they didn't install it and just walked away ! And we had paid them all the money up front. Pros: The rentals themselves were AMAZING! We rented 1 20x30 tent, 2 15x15 tents, a bar, tables, and chairs for our backyard barbecue wedding. The items were high quality and the men who delivered the items helped to ensure that they were set up exactly how we wanted them. They even made recommendations to increase the use we were get from the rentals. We also had the items for 3 days at no additional charge, which gave us appropriate time to set up and tear down the event. Cons: It was extremely difficult to process payments. They never were able to use my primary credit card (which has never had issues before or since) and had no flexibility with payment options. They wouldn't even take a credit card authorization over the phone. It was IMPOSSIBLE to get someone to call me back, so make sure you get all your questions answered at your site visit. The delivery staff was 4 hours late to setting up the rentals and gave us no notice about that. In fact, when we called to see if they were running late, the phone number always went to voicemail. We genuinely were frantically searching for other rental companies just in case they didn't show up. read more

Do not rent from this company. As you can see from every 1-2 star review, the company will attack you and assume no responsibility for their own actions that contributed to the problems. We rented a tent, tables, and chairs. We were in a bit of a jam time-wise and the owner pressured me to decide quickly with a claim that others were potentially going to rent the last available tent. I reviewed the first contract and when I noted the tent would be on a brick courtyard in our apartment complex they advised we would need to rent barrels to weigh the tent down. I said fine. At no time did they mention the weight needed (400#) nor that we would need to provide a hose to the locations of the barrels. I had previously reviewed the contract so when the second was sent I was only looking for the barrel charge and then signed. Thus I missed the water/hose requirement. For all I knew the barrels could have been weighted with sand bags. Yes I should have taken my time to read the contract; however I felt pressured by the owner to act quickly or risk losing the tent to the other party. On the delivery day, the crew said they couldn't fill and move the barrels from the spigot. The complex maintenance staff was off duty so we couldn't get a longer hose. We offered the use of a dolly to transport them and they said it wouldn't work. We adapted and agreed to setup the tent in the grass. Afterwards I emailed to ask for a credit for the barrels since they never left the truck. The owner refused, I said I was disappointed and suggested he cover those items verbally with customers going forward. He basically said that wasn't his job but he'd appreciate other suggestions. I replied that I would not recommend Top Notch based on the experience and the email exchange up to that point. He then fired off an unhinged email that included calling me a "Karen" and threatening to tell all the other rental companies out there to not rent to us. I read through all of the Yelp reviews, not just the highlighted ones (wish I had done that before), and realize now that the owner's behavior is not an isolated incident. I called last minute on a Tuesday to rent glassware for an event the following day at our dental office. Not only did they answer the call immediately, but they were able to drop off the glassware the same day that I called before noon. We have had a horrific experience with Top Notch in the summer and fall of 2017. First, they almost ruined our wedding (see the post by my husband, Joe E., on 7/10/2017). We asked the owner, Al, for a refund, and he only offered us 10%, which we did not feel was sufficient, so we did not accept it. After Joe posted the negative Yelp review, we received a letter from Top Notch's attorney, threatening to sue us if we didn't take down the review. After a conversation between our lawyers, Top Notch offered us a larger refund if we would take down the negative review. We have decided to not accept the refund, as it still is significantly lower than the amount we expected. I used them for my party but it was an experience I would not wish for anyone to go through. They didn't set up the tent we asked for saying it was too big for the space, however last year we used the same size tent in the same space by Rentals Unlimited in Bolingbrook did not have a problem we had the tent put up and it fit. Anyway Top Notch rental were rude and didn't provide the tent for my occasion we ended up buying 2 small tents to use instead. Top Notch Rental refused to refund the 400$ for the tent that was not delivered. It was a very frustrating time and I will never use them again or recommend them to anyone I know. Horrible experience with Top Notch. We rented a tent and dinnerware for a party. The young men who showed up to put the tent up arrived with an attitude, complaining about how tired they were after a busy pre-Thanksgiving day, and were incredibly disrespectful. The walls were put up wrong initially - though it had been explained clearly where the door was to be positioned - so they ended up having to take them down and move them around, which they made clear they did not appreciate. They left - I went out to take a look at the "finished product" and was shocked to see the mess they left us with: wall joints were left unattached, walls were not leveled, and it was filthy. Took pictures immediately and sent them to Al, who informed me that his two man crew told him that they didn't leave it that way - apparently I "staged" it and then spent three hours cleaning it and putting it together the right way. Unbelievable. The heater came with a thermostat that did not work, making the tent useless for much of the evening. Thankfully it only housed the bar and cocktail tables. We ordered and paid for two strands of lights, got one. Verbally asked for white table cloths, got black. Was told by Al the tent would be put up on a Friday, though apparently the contract said Wednesday. Never again - look for an alternate business for your rental needs - we have rarely experienced such a lack of professionalism. read more

My sisters and I planned a major anniversary party for my parents, and working with this company was the least stressful aspect of the whole event! Al was amazing, great customer service, very knowledgeable and courteous. My friend was getting married that same month, same venue, so I got a quote for her event as well. I've used Top Notch on two occasions with great success. One was a smaller job where I just needed a table and chairs in order to host a Christmas dinner. The other was a larger event where I needed a tent and several tables and chairs for a Fourth of July grill out. For the larger event I was very impressed with the actual tent --- it looked like a circus tent (but white). Was very sturdy and cool looking, much fancier than I expected for the price. Thanks, but NO THANKS. We used Top Notch Services for a Bridal Shower and will not use them again. We were fine with the chairs, but the table looked very poor. However, we went ahead knowing we could cover it with a tablecloth and after returning everything to the owner Al, we left on good terms having already pre-paid! Then he emailed me later to say that he charged (per the contract) $25.00 for tape removal. Not while I was there with him when he took the table back, but after I left. $25.00 for very, very little pieces of tape, left on the underside of the one and only table we rented! The table rental was only $7.50 and was splintered at one end when we received it, not to mention the $12.50 damage waiver we were charged in case of damages (of course there were none). Yet still we were charged for the little bit of tape removal that would never be seen, on the underside of the splintered table we received. We are extremely happy with Top Notch and would recommend them to our friends and family and continue to use their services when we need for sure.
