We were craving some comforting ramen on a cold night in Quebec city. There isn't much in terms of ramen in QC so we headed to this spot as it had pretty solid reviews. However being from Vancouver where ramen is plentiful and so damn good, this left us feeling pretty underwhelmed. We waited about 40 minutes to get a table - I guess we went on a really busy evening (which oddly enough was a Sunday) and people ahead of us said "it's worth the wait". Unfortunately for us it wasn't. So where did it go wrong for us you ask? While the staff was really kind, it was a bit slow going - I had to ask for my drink order twice for my sister and I. It finally came with my soup. We had a salad to start called the Wafu salad - a Japanese chefs salad with Wafu dressing. While the dressing was the best part, there wasn't much on the deconstructed salad of corn, bell peppers, crunchy noodle, daikon, and lettuce, the salad was also served on a really awkward dish where the contents falls off the edges as you try to grab a bit of everything. Up next were the ramens - I got the Miso - Shallot, bean sprouts, nori, naruto, pork chashu and 1/2 egg and corn - I also got a 1/2 egg added for $1.50. If you're going to serve ramen for nearly $20 - you need to supply a full egg, that's just silly to only give a halfer. The first thing I noticed about the ramen was it was lacking broth - by the time I started getting into it, the noodles had soaked up a lot of it and I was left with mostly noodles - not great. The broth itself was flavourful so if it just had more of it, it'd be a better ramen. The corn was also odd for me and I didn't love that addition. My sister and moms was worse - my sis got the Vegetarian and my mom got the Yasai Miso. The vegetarian had so much stuff on top that again it takes away from the broth (which was also non-existent). My mothers was the same - the vegetables were just a bunch of cabbage lobbed ontop. Unfortunately I can't recommend this spot for ramen - the mediocre food is not worth it or the lineup to get it. I had just checked into our hotel nearby, and wanted something relatively quick for dinner. My kids specifically asked for something Japanese, so Tora-Ya Ramen look like a good option. We walked over and it wasn't too busy on a Sunday night. It's not a big space - maybe enough to seat 30 people. It's simply decorated, and some specials were written on blackboards on the wall. We basically both the miso and the shoyu ramen, and they were both good. They were a good size, and reasonably priced. Service was friendly and helpful. Why am I giving 3 out of 5 stars? It was a good meal, but nothing memorable about it. It's very similar to other ramen places I've been to, so in a few weeks, I might not remember much about my visit other than it filled me up, and there's nothing wrong with that. It only makes sense to be trying all the French food that Quebec City has to offer, but I missed Asian food after my 3rd day here. We found Tora-Ya, which was the highest rated ramen joint in Quebec City (on Yelp), and everything was delicious! Service was also friendly and attentive. May I add, we were greeted in Japanese by both Japanese and non-Japanese staff members, which was really welcoming! I had the Miso Ramen for take on a cold January evening (-11C) and found it good/okay-ish. Perhaps I'm spoiled as home is the Toronto area where there is lots of Ramen and good Ramen. Or, perhaps it was the 4-minute walk back to my Airbnb in the cold. On the latter, perhaps not as I had an insulated bag and I reheated the broth in the microwave before adding it to the noodles. The place looks intimate and quaint and I would have loved to have dined in. However, I decided to eat back at my Airbnb and ordered via the website portal. It let me set a time for pick up and also let me prepay. My order was ready on time and when I arrived. Despite it being relatively cold the place was more than packed with people waiting on the sidewalk to get in. The staff do seem primarily Francophone (French speaking) as we're outside the prime tourist area. Between my waning High School french and their limited English we got everything worked out. The restaurant itself looked cosy and welcoming but I had made my decision. As mention, I re-hotted the broth in the microwave before adding it to the noodles. Still, the made up ramen still ended up a bit on the cools side. The noodles were good, the nori crisp, and veggies good, yet the whole thing was just okay-ish. Maybe it did need a bit more temperature heat. Also, the provided spoon was a regular take out plastic job. Waaay too small for ramen. This actually made eating more of a job than it should be and took away from the experience. Larger, better take out spoons are available. We were staying a hotel not far from Tora-Ya, and as suggested in our guidebook, we gave it a try. My wife and I had the miso ramen, while we ordered a side of noodles and egg for the kids to share. Also, the friend chicken starter. I like to say that the staff were very friendly and helpful. I am always appreciative of patience with people who don't speak French, even though I always give it a shot. Anyway, we loved our ramen as did the kids. The chicken was also great. A note about ramen, I love it. It's like some people's view of pizza; it's all good. So, I lump ramen into really good, and pretty good. This was really good. Excellent ramen - probably the best in Quebec. Quebec has limited ramen options so it you're going to get your fix I think this is the spot to do it. The service is incredible. The staff is unbelievably friendly, helpful and congenial. We met a chef named Renaud who gave us climbing recommendations and he was wonderful! Very good ramen, many vegetarian options. We had the miso ramen, there was also soyu ramen as well as some other options. There was not an English menu so we had a bit of guessing plus Google translate. There were three size options for the ramen, the largest of which was in a larger bowl and had a few more toppings. The toppings were really nice and included crunchy corn and lightly poached greens/cabbage plus the usual mushroom, bamboo, fish cakes, pork belly. The ramen eggs were superb, jammy and well-seasoned. We also got a salad with similar toppings to the ramen with lightly-dressed greens instead of broth and noodles (though there were some crunchy noodles) which was a nice contrast. Food ( 8/10 ) - Really good appetizers. The karaage could have been juicer but was overall really delicious. Nice crisp and sauce paired very nicely. The real star of the food was definitely the quail eggs. Those things were absolutely delicious. Nice saltiness because of the soy sauce marinade and super creamy egg yolks. The ramen is definitely the most important thing though. It was definitely up there on good ramens which was a definite bonus. Broth was creamy, noodles were thin and fresh, and all other toppings were made nicely. Pricing was definitely worth the food. Service ( 8/10 ) - Good service, not much more, not much less. I'm from Manhattan, NYC and I've been to Japan. I've had my fair share of ramen 'round the world. The mixed reviews made me hesitant to try this place so I'm trying to help the next food-review lover know if they need to make the 20 minute walk from Old Quebec alll the way over here for one bowl of ramen. Here's the deal - you are in QUEBEC CITY - known for anything BUT Asian food. Seems like it may be a generally good, with some misses - kind of place based on the reviews. I had omori-miso with the karaage. It's a 3.75/5 stars bowl of ramen that will be adequately satisfying if you're really craving something Asian. I'd rate it a little lower than those miso sun-ramen noodles that are quite ubiquitous in supermarkets. I wouldn't be mad if I ended up eating here again this trip, and if I was in QC again - craving Asian food - yes I would come back. But if this ramen was in Manhattan, I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. Get my drift? I saw some reviews say the broth is salty - I agree but I've also had saltier in other WELL RATED ramen restaurants- I'd recommend the miso over shoyu if you're that sensitive. It was not as overwhelming as some reviews said - i drank half the bowl without feeling thirsty. The pork isn't dry it's just a very lean cut as compared to the fattier pieces most ramen shops serve. Still flavorful and moist (for a lean cut). Think of it like a moist chicken breast version of pork. If you can do that - you can do this bowl of ramen. Someone said the noodles were overcooked - mine were al dente for the entire 15 minutes I took eating them. The veggies and nori were adequately crunchy and fresh. The egg was actually jammy for me and not overcooked- another miss for some people? The karaage was surprisingly chicken breast instead of the thigh I'm used to but a moist chicken breast. It's not battered so it's NOT crispy - it feels more like a very soft light fry and like chik-fila nugget texture. Served with a mayo and shichimi togarashi dip. It's like 7 pieces so I'd recommend sharing. Again - not the worst and not the best - but adequately satisfying. Giving it 4 stars because it is unlikely you're going to find a solid ramen place in QC like this. read more

So after eating so many Quebecois food in two days, we were in the mood for something familiar in the form of Ramen. There were only like 3 options for ramen in Quebec so we chose this place bc of the reviews and that it was a couple blocks away from our place. We. Were. Disappointed. We shared one large spicy miso ramen and a small shoyu ramen between the three of us. The flavor was just not there. The shoyu one might have a little bit more flavor compared to the spicy miso, but I kept getting more and more upset with each slurp thinking and hoping maybe I was just wrong about each previous slurp, but it did not hit the spot at all. I don't really consider myself a ramen snob at all, but well maybe I am. We finished our sake and went on our way with each bowl still half full. I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately it fell a little short of expectations. After reading such high reviews and also we just so happen to be in Quebec city during one of the three nights a week they opened, we decided we definitely needed to try it. It was a busy restaurant and we had to wait outside for a table, and they constantly had take out orders. I liked the atmosphere and vibes at from the restaurant as it really felt like a ramen bar and they had a good selection of drinks. The servers were very nice even considering we didn't speak French. We ordered two ramens and the food came out quickly. I found both the soup bases were not brothy but instead more like salty water, especially the shoyu one. I also found the two pork cha shus really dry and frankly really small in size. The broth and the cha shu are usually the highlights of good ramen to me and both of these were very medicore here. This could be a nice place to hang out with friends if I lived here but just for food unfortunately next time I would definitely hold back my ramen cravings until I'm back home. read more

I went there on a Saturday night as a group of 4. The staff were very nice and welcoming, they greeted us right away. This restaurant was recommended by my brother, and when we decided to show up at 5 to have no line-up (as told by the reviews) The most liked ramen was the Miso, followed by the spicy Miso, followed by the vegetarian ramen. The chicken in the spicy miso was very dry though... I agree the Miso Ramen was tasty. The vegetable ramen lacked a bit of taste, and I was therefore disappointed: I had two other people taste it and agree with me. I asked for hot sauce and was charged 1$ but was not told that I was gonna be charged for that until I saw it on my bill. Everyone really liked their plate, well more than I did so that's why I decided to give it a 4 (it was 4/4/5/3). Overall, it's a nice spot in QC city and we would go back. The staff is friendly and service was relatively prompt considering we were the only ones dining at the time. However, judging purely on the food, the shoyu soup I ordered was VERY salty, the egg was barely soft boiled like a traditional ramen bowl would have it, if anything it was basically hard boiled, the cha shu was pretty tasteless as well. Maybe because I'm from Toronto I have other ramen places to compare it too, but for the price and quantity, I'd say this is a hard pass unless you're looking for a very westernized style of "ramen" read more

This restaurant offers authentic Japanese cuisine. My hubby is Japanese and he was very pleased with both appetizers and ramen dishes which we ordered. The wait to be sitted at a table was about 20 minutes long but the excellent food was worth the wait. We are visiting Qiebec City from Philadelphia, and we are very pleasantly surprised to have found a real Japanese restaurant in this city. The cooks definitely know what they are doing here. Context is everything when judging a restaurant. If Tora-Ya (Tiger Shop?) were located in my previous city (Lille, France) I would be giving it an instant 5 stars because 1) there are zero ramen spots in Lille, and 2) restaurants with this kind of personality and homey charm are rare in that unfortunate part of the world. Now, if Tora-Ya were located in Japan, I could not tell you how it would compare to your standard local ramen establishment there. I'll leave that to the Japanese visitors and immigrants to Quebec City to determine. What I'm most inclined to do then is judge this place against the many fine ramen restaurants I enjoyed as an NYC inhabitant of the mid-2000s. That's why I'm giving Tora-Ya four stars, where in other contexts I very well may be giving it five stars or even three stars. As others have noted Tora-ya tends to fill up quickly, so the best approach you can take for dinner is to show up at around 5:10 pm after all of the seats have been grabbed up by the first-wave, eager beaver crowd. If you timed it well, you'll find yourself heading up the line of second-wavers. I know, it seems dumb to show up intentionally late, but here me out. If you pout innocently without muttering or giving the stinky eye, one of the servers, struck with pity, will offer you a pint while you wait, to which you will say: "That's a thing? Fuck yes." And now you get to spend the next 30 minutes sipping your lager in the warmth of the entrance, grimacing through the window at all the losers queued up outside. That's right: losers standing in the cold without beer. Eventually, someone will finish their meal and you'll sit down to order sides of kimchi, kara age, and those warm little octopus balls with brown sauce. You should probably also order a soy sauce-based ramen-with-everything (Ômori Shôyu) since it's not much more expensive than the other ramens-with-not-everything. I have to be honest, I enjoyed the sides and the beer much more than the main dish. Again, I'm comparing this food experience to all of the giant, delicious ramen bowls I tucked into back in my NYC days. This just wasn't the same standard. Still, some Japanese dude or gal will probably tell me that this is exactly how the ramen is served in Japan and the stuff I was eating in midtown was yuppie overkill. So be it.
