Goldsboro is the turnoff for Harker's Island Atlantic Beach and Beauford so we stopped for dinner to start a long weekend and we were pleasantly surprised. I'm a California girl and we lived in Arizona for a decade. Real Mexican food is hard to find and this was it. Not Sonoran, not Jaliscan, if I had to guess I'd say maybe Michoacán. But I'm probably wrong. Anywhoo it doesn't signify, the food was good and plentiful. The kids were predictable and boring: taquitos and quesadillas. Hubby and my oldest tried fajitas. The portions are huge, they offer corn and flour tortillas (WIN) and the salsa and black beans are awesome. I must admit that I ordered extra salsa to put in my food it was so tasty. If we choose this route in future I'd plan around having dinner here. The service was really good, the ambiance was more - even though my daughter got a table in the bar lol. For 8! The first thing you need to know is that the portions are huge! Come hungry and do not fill up on chips. A booth that seats four barely had enough room for the 4 large food platters, drinks, chips, yummy salsa, and queso dip. The restaurant is colorful and filled with quirky art. The team of servers was efficient and hard working, not overly friendly, just taking orders and delivering food. The food was good and made even better leftovers the next day. I had a chicken fajita quesadilla. The rice and refried beans never do much for me, but who needs them with the very large quesadilla? Everything else was popular and tasty. We had a birthday boy among us, so a sombrero, singing waiters, free dessert and a whipped cream surprise arrived at the end of the meal. We've eaten here several times since moving to the area in 2019. This place used to be amazing. Great food. The quality has waned lately. Today was pretty terrible. And this will definitely be the last time we go there for the foreseeable future. It look quite a while to be greeted and put in our drink order. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 minutes after we were sat. We were actually getting ready to just leave when the waiter finally came by. The restaurant was only about 1/4 full at the time. The salsa was terrible and the chips were stale. I'm not picky about salsa at all. If it's even resembling a salsa, I probably like it. But this was truly awful. I actually wondered if someone had used tomato soup or spaghetti sauce to make it. The food itself was okay. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good. Mine was pretty burned but at this point it really wasn't worth trying to correct it. Didn't matter anyway, since our waiter never showed up again. We never saw him for the rest of our time there, and the hostess finally ended up bringing our check. Our meal cost for two lunch specials and two sodas was $30 after tip. For that amount we'll just go to one of the several other Mexican restaurants in the area where we can expect good service and good food. It's a shame. We used to love this place. But several bad experiences have made sure we won't be back. read more

Toreros have been around for a while. Their food is good. The plates are enormous. I do have to admit that I was disappointed in the nacho's as half the chips did not have any cheese on them. Everyone was friendly and they were constantly asking if everything was okay with my meal or if anything else was needed. The reason I don't give it a 4stars is because upon entering the restaurant, a server answered the phone and was asking around for the price of a drink. There are a few different places in town to get Mexican cuisine. This is a place that definately gets a lot of customers as they are always busy. During lunch they are usually really busy but they still get the food out quickly. I recommend their chicken chimichanga with rice and beans. They also have really good queso and the price is about $6 for lunch so it is a pretty good deal. Don't think you will leave hungry because they have huge portions. The service is great even though most of the guys flirt with the female customers, I think it's cute...but that's just me. They speak fluent Spanish and English so if you speak either you will do fine here. They are great about having seating for large groups and going aways/parties as well. I mean I like Mexican, heck I'm from California (er.. one of the states right above Mexico) so Mexican food is second nature. Granted California Mexican food (Baja Mexican or Fresh-Mex) is different than the Tex-Mex they serve at Torero's , but in a cravings pinch it'll do. I normally get the cheese enchilada and a taco of some sort. It comes with refried beans and rice - pretty standard fare. Torrero's does karaoke on Thursday nights I think and they also have a little DJ'd dance floor on Friday nights that I danced to Top 40 while having a couple of drinks at the bar once (or twice). Taco Tuesday is a great deal! $1 tacos all day. The chips and salsa are both fresh and tasty. My wife and I had five tacos between us along with a large side of guacamole and one of us got iced tea and the bill was only $12.00. The food, however, was really good and plentiful. I ordered a chicken fajita salad and it was enough to feed 2 adults or 1 adult and 2 kids. It was filled with chicken, bell peppers, onions, rice, beans, guacamole and sour cream. There was so much food that I ate it for lunch and dinner the next day. This place is great! For the price you can't beat the portions and the taste is exquisite. We were seated promptly and never ran out of chips, which is a good sign at any Mexican restaurant. I love this place so much. I've been coming here for years and have always enjoyed it, but we went last night and I just had to write a review. My boyfriend, my 8 year old son, and I stopped by on our way home from camping. We were starving and also wanted to watch a football game we had been listening to in the car. We came in around 4:30pm on a Saturday, so it wasn't busy at all. We sat ourselves at one of the bar tables so we could see TVs. The bartender/waiter was over quickly for our drink orders (we just had water except my son who had sweet tea). He brought those out quickly. Then a really nice guy who was maybe a manager stopped by to check on us. We asked if he could turn one TV to the N.C. State game - he turned about four to the game including the two largest TVs! We thought that was really sweet of him so we were able to keep up with the game no matter where we were at the table. Our entrees were fantastic as usual. My son just had chicken fingers. My boyfriend has the Macho Burrito with chicken which was gigantic but so good that he ate all of it. I tried something new (usually go with Camarones a la Diabla which is great) and had the Mariscos al mojo de ajo. It was listed as spicy but when it came out it didn't look spicy at all. But it was so spicy and so perfect! This is my new favorite dish there! I wish I had taken a picture but was starving so I was shoveling it down as soon as it arrived. My son had wanted a churro for desert but ended up being too full to order it which sucked because I wanted to try it and have never been able to make it to desert there. Maybe next time. Highly disappointed in the food and service tonight. The "burrito" was not that. It was two tortillas filled pretty much with 85% rice and some diced of steak (I wouldn't call it carne asada) and covered in a very strange red sauce that was supposed to be enchilada but tasted like spaghetti sauce. The poyo fundido was nothing more than some plan shredded chicken wrapped in a tortilla with a slice of yellow cheese on top. No FUNDIDO. Our waiter never came by our table... no one did after the food was dropped off. Never asked how dinner was. If we needed another beverage. Nothing. When we told him the order was wrong he told me the girls up front would take care of us.... $1.08 discount for the "taking care of part". As a operational manager for a small business. I took that gesture as an insult. They may feel that 10% on the one item was enough but honestly didn't even cover our tax on the tab let alone this missing sauce (which makes the meal) so I hope if anyone ever orders fundido on the side they only charge you $1.08 because clearly that's all it's worth?! Then don't even get me started on the bathroom... it was stinky with the wallpaper peeling off the walls.
