So cheesy and creamy and yummy...I could have happily rolled in a big bath of it!! Now lets move away from my fantasies.... My boyfriend had the soup and sandwich deal. The spicy butternut squash soup was delicous. He also had ham sandwiches...made with proper ham. None of this wafer thin cooked ham you get in the supermarket. This was chunky bits of homemade ham with white bread and lots of flavour. It is a quaint wee pub, very old school decor but with lots of charm. They stock Strathaven Ales now as well. Coincidentally, I had just a few weeks earlier walked past the church (?) and thought that it's pretty cool that you can wander down a side alley and find a pretty lovely square. That's Glasgow for you though I suppose. Our first moment included us waiting at the door to be seated - mind you, the sign specifically says you should go the bar to be seated. Duh, blonde moment. It makes total sense though, the bar staff don't have a view of the door because of the big round pillar in the way. We had a good laugh about it though. Word to the wise though - sitting anywhere close to the door can get rather drafty. Especially when it's cold outside. The place was really busy with a rather eclectic mixture of people - older men, business people and later on some youths who were pretty drunk and relatively inappropriately dressed. Anyways, on to the food. My friend went for the pork and black pudding burger with the fried egg. Be advised that there is chopped bacon in the pork mince and so don't worry about the pink spots. It comes with a side salad and some fries. I myself wen't for the veggie haggis burger (I don't know why) but I do not regret my choice (salad and fries as sides). It was very, very tasty, crumbly and extremely large. The cheese was melty and wonderful but I wish there had been a little sauce of some kind and maybe a little more spice in the burger itself. The fries were on the dull side, bland and semi old and cold. We also shared some onion rings which were pretty tasty. The batter was crisp and not dripping in oil, but it could have done with a stronger flavour I think. We drank some house red, which was mediocre but helped, and at the end, although extremely full, we had some peppermint tea to forego the dessert. The tea comes with some pretty amazing little sweet treat and so dessert was definitely not needed. It's definitely a hidden little gem in Glasgow!

However, situated on the edge of the city's east end, it's hard not to be encapsualted by Cafe Source. Formed in the basement of the truly sumptuous St Andrews in the Square, the cafe/bar is tastefully decorated and is virtually a cocoon in one of the least appealling areas of the city. While football fans could be battering lumps out of each other little more than five minutes away, more sophisticated locals and those in the know are likely to be supping a mojito, enjoying authentic and delicious(although not cheap) Scottish grub and watching a Laurel and Hardy film in here. Were this pub situated in the West End it would probably be unbearable, but so inconspicuous is its location that it maintains an extremely laidback and friendly vibe. The staff, in particular, are excellent. Visitors would be well advised to order a taxi from here if they're leaving late at night, but that shouldn't put them off coming in the first place. This is a lovely venue with some of the best local food on the go. Oh, and if you combine it with a gig in the upstairs venue, you're talking about one of the best word of mouth nights out in the city.

The location is an area of Glasgow I don't really venture, and I'm not sure how you'd get there without a car. We had friends visiting so took that as the perfect excuse to book in for their Tuesday night dinner where they also offer a 2-1-2 deal (2 courses for two people with a bottle of wine for £30). We were a little early for our booking but were seated quickly and had our pick of tables. The restaurant space isn't overly large and you get a great view of the head chef putting the finishing touches on the dishes at the pass right in front of you which certainly made it a little more interesting than a standard restaurant. We were going to get the 2-1-2 deal but none of us really fancied drinking that much, so we just went for the set menu instead (2 courses for £17 or 3 for £20). I had the scallop (£4 supplement) and the shellfish risotto for main. Menu descriptions are a little short but I'm pretty happy to be surprised. We were served a butternut squash velouté to start which was lovely, a nice little portion and topped with truffle oil. I loved my starter - a generous portion of scallops, beautiful presentation and that serious wow-factor taste that I always get so excited for. Main was a lovely shellfish risotto which was unlike any I've had before - it had a lovely, generous mix of seafood and was very rich. It did get a little overwhelming by the end but I really can't complain - it was a really high standard of food that really impressed me. We decided not to get dessert. While I wouldn't say portion sizes were huge, I was totally stuffed after two courses so we just got the bill. Our only issues on the night were the service which was a little slow and haphazard - it took a while for my friend to be able to order her wine, and it took a couple of goes to get the card machine to pay the bill. These little issues didn't affect the night though and the food was so impeccable that it's still a 5-star from me. I'd go back in a heartbeat as I enjoyed it so much. The bill worked out to be around £60 per couple with drinks etc which I thought was quite reasonable.

Depending where you live its possibly not the easiest to get to as there is not a local subway, or train station handy. We had the car, however I think there is a local bus route that would stop near by. Plenty of on street parking which is free. On arrival the manager was busy on the phone, however he instantly acknowledged us and we were seated quickly. There was actually no one in for lunch the entire time we were there, surprisingly this did not effect the atmosphere. It was bright, with a relaxed vibe and chilled music on in the background (cant beat a bit of Paolo on a sat afternoon!) The manager was very attentive and knowledgable of all dishes on the menu. He discussed recently being on wine training, so when ordering my food I ask him to select one he felt suited the dishes. He proceeded to let me try 2 different whites, describing each. This was a nice experience, very personal, but not in an uncomfortable way (my knowledge of wine is limited to Asda 3 for £10, so I enjoyed it.) We opted for the set menu which was 2 courses - £17 or 3 courses - £20. I think this is definitely value for money as the food is of a high quality. To start I had Smoked ham hough sandwich with a waldorph salad. This was unusual, like a ham terrine, with bread in the middle and a very thin piece of pastry on the outside. The flavours worked really well together, and the crisp apple, walnut and blue cheese salad complemented the dish well. For main I had pork fillet with sweet potato, courgette, paprika and salami. I would never have thought to have all these flavours in one dish, but they were the perfect combo. There was a nice smoky hint from the paprika, however this wasn't overpowering. This was a good sized portion, the tiny sweet potato balls were light and perfectly cooked. In the middle of my main the manager asked if I wanted another glass of wine, however I was trying to be well behaved and refrain as I was heading into town for a wee shop. Through past experience wine+shopping = some questionable purchases!! However he must have seen it pained me to say no, so he brought me another glass of white which he felt would go with my pork dish, and this was on the house!!! So lovely. We had a really enjoyable afternoon at 111 Nico's. I can appreciate the manager may not have been as attentive if the restaurant was at full capacity, however he appeared to be very skilled and eager for the restaurant to do well. I do love the background to the restaurant too, and the training academy that offers so many people the opportunity to be learning new skills and produce food to a very high standard. (Major screw up with the rental car emergency service, ended up waiting 4+ hours). They offered to help us find the bus or get a taxi. That's exactly what we got. We walked to the Chip after visiting the relatively nearby Kelvingrove Museum. It's in a not-too-touristy area with tons of nearby restaurant options and hidden in a little alley (or "close") off Byres Road. There are multiple "venues" within Ubiquitous Chip - 2 bars (The Corner and The Wee...) We ended up at the Wee ahead of our reservation time, and the bartender guided us well with a dram after asking for something he thought was great that we'd have a more difficult time getting back in the States. (Ledaig). Both bars were pretty packed, so we wandered back and forth between the 2 until a spot finally opened at the Wee Pub. Our reservation was for the main dining room (not the Brasserie). There was a lot for us to enjoy as vegetarians. We rolled our own tasting menu with a plate of Scottish cheeses (typically a dessert item on Scottish menus, but we stand by the legitimacy of cheese for dinner). All 5 cheeses were vegetarian (ie no rennet) and served with a nice chutney and 2 different types of in-house-made crackers. It was delightful. We also had the BBQ Carrots dish...it's two carrot chunks, soft-cooked, charred on the outside, served on a delicious bed of sauces with a lovely Indian curry vibe. We got a salad with honey mustard dressing, fennel and shaved celery...it was very fresh and a nice counterpoint to the cheese and carrots. We also got potatoes, which were topped with creme fresh and light herbs. The potatoes were a little dry and light on flavor, but dipped in the creme and also in the leftover sauce from the carrots dish, they did the job. Service was stellar and friendly. Dining in the main restaurant makes you feel like you're outside. There are live plants everywhere, and a ceiling made up of windows like a greenhouse. You can see the brasserie, the more casual restaurant, on the second level (though, honestly, the main restaurant didn't feel unnecessarily stuffy like some fine dining restaurants. This was the perfect place for us to have a final meal in Scotland with plenty of food, drink and friendly service that left the perfect taste in our mouths.

One thing that most places that I go to lack in is properly trained or polite staff, in this place staff would say to enjoy your meal, we had a guy come to check on us several occasions. Food was a 5/5 I couldn't fault these guys, our only issue was that we ordered desserts to go and was given the wrong ones, if it wasn't for that they would have got a 5/5 rating.
