We attended a beautiful wedding here and the reception followed onsite as well. The ceremony and reception were both held outdoors. It was beautiful ceremony, the grass area was a beautiful backdrop for the vows. The entire area was great for photos. The reception area was perfect for the party size. There was enough room to setup food, tables and a dance floor area. The DJ also had room to setup in the corner with multiple television screens.

Wednesday I had the opportunity to tour the San Diego California Temple. I booked my complimentary…read moretickets weeks in advance, as visitors are only being allowed inside from June 18 through July 11 following a three year renovation project. I arrived around 2:20 PM for my 2:30 PM reservation. Guests were first directed into a large tent to wait, and groups were gradually brought inside. My group didn't enter until just after 2:50 PM, and no one ever asked to see our tickets. The dress code appeared to be anywhere from casual to business casual. I had come directly from training seniors at a nursing home and was wearing pink leggings and a jacket. Before I could even ask whether my outfit was appropriate, one of the young women working there complimented my leggings. Everyone I encountered was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The temple was originally built 33 years ago, and non-members have not been allowed inside since its dedication. It was truly an honor to be a guest and experience a place that is usually reserved for members of the faith. Before entering, children helped place protective shoe covers over our shoes to preserve the temple's floors. We were told they are seeing around 10,500 visitors per day, with people traveling from all over to tour the building. One thing I learned is that, unlike Christian churches, the temple is not where weekly worship services are held. Instead, it is used for special religious ceremonies and ordinances. One of the first things you see upon entering is a large baptismal that resembles a giant jacuzzi, complete with stairs leading down into it. Members perform baptisms on behalf of deceased ancestors who may not have had the opportunity to be baptized during their lifetime. It is supported by 12 oxen, representing the 12 tribes of Israel. We were shown the dressing rooms where members change into white clothing, symbolizing purity and equality before God. There are separate dressing rooms for men and women, each lined with numerous changing stalls. We also saw rooms where instructional presentations are shown, followed by a large, open space designed for quiet reflection and prayer. The atmosphere was calm and reverent, with very little talking. One of the most interesting areas was the sealing rooms, where marriages are performed. Mirrors face one another on opposite walls, creating a reflection that appears to go on forever, symbolizing eternal families and eternal marriage. As for the overall experience, everyone was exceptionally kind, welcoming, and soft-spoken. The building itself was immaculate, bright, and incredibly organized. Personally, the atmosphere felt a little unusual to me, almost like stepping into a very elegant, brightly lit funeral home. Everything was perfectly ordered, and the uniformity of it all gave off a feeling that I can understand why some outsiders might find a bit unsettling or misunderstood. That said, I appreciated the opportunity to experience a tradition and belief system different from my own. At the end of the day, most people are searching for the same things: faith, community, purpose, and connection. It was fascinating to step inside a place that plays such an important role in the lives of so many people and to gain a better understanding of their beliefs and practices.

After 33 years, they're opening up temporarily for tours to the public. It's recommended that you…read moreRSVP. There's no parking in the temple grounds but there's a lot where they'd shuttle you in. Expecting it to be busy, we carpooled. No pictures or videos inside but it's beautiful and very peaceful. Definitely worth checking out.

A friend of mine started attending Ethnos over the summer. She claimed she was atheist, and that she went for curiosity's sake. I internally groaned and thought, "Noooo, they're going to get to her too! Damn it!" Yes, I fully admit I'm a bigot when it comes to one or two things in life. Anyway, last week I asked her if she was still going to the weekly services. MK indeed was, and told me all about the previous sermon; it seemed pretty interesting and had little to do about religion. She claimed that the pastor rarely touched upon religion and usually just philosophized for an hour or so. When MK told me this week's topic was sex, I thought, "Hmm, maybe I should check this place out." And I did. As we were approaching the entrance this morning, she gave me some surprising news: "Uh yeah, for the first hour we sing." Uh, thanks for letting me know that in advance. Singing and me have a rather unpleasant relationship. Thankfully the lights were turned low and not everyone was singing along. A non-singer such as myself could feel quite comfortable just listening to the music. I should also note the music was very lively. And my friend was wrong- the music session was 30 minutes at most. Following that was a prayer session for 10-15 minutes. We were supposed to get into groups of 3-4 people. Given the fact I only pray during sporting events, I just chatted to MK and her friend. No one seemed to mind. So props for that. Finally came the pastor and his talk on sex. He chose to focus on Proverbs 5:1-23. I thought it was a pretty sweet passage and even us heretical agnostics could apply its lesson to our lives. I liked the sermon until the pastor's solution in handling sexual frustration: turn to God. When he elaborated, he actually chose some Pslam that said "right hand" and I thought that was appropriate. Unfortunately he wasn't making an innuendo to masturbation; had he done so, I would have immediately decided to make a return visit. The pastor wasn't as liberal as me, and still insisted that one should wait for sex until marriage. Yeah, that's when I remembered why I'm not a church goer, and the "Give me a freaking break" line started to run over and over through my mind. So overall, it is a pretty nice service. It isn't SUPER liberal, but it ain't Pat Robertson territory either. And lastly, if anyone tells you about Ethnos, and claims religion is downplayed here, DON'T BELIEVE THEM! (just to make it clear, last line was a joking reference to my friend, and not anyone directly related to Ethnos)
