If you have been to California, you'll be extremely disappointed by these presumably "Real California Burritos and Tacos". I had a medium grilled chicken burrito which was quite small. I would say that the large version is probably the regular US size. There wasn't much meat inside, the cilantro rice was bland and the black beans not particularly well cooked. My friend and I were in the area and looking for a cheap bite to eat before going separate ways. As I don't know Canary wharf well, it was hard to find. FYI, it's in the station beside platform 3&4. FOOD: Simple and delicious. My american friend talked me into going for the naked burrito (aka a burrito bowl ~ less messy, slightly less carb). Feeling ambitious, I ordered the large size with grilled chicken. The taste was spot on with american burritos. My friend agreed as well. She had the Carnitas (braised / slow cooked pork) with which she'll judge whether a taco place is worthy of her American palette. Joking, but she really enjoyed. I like Tortilla because you can get a whole meal for under £10, including a burrito, tortilla chips and a soft drink, which is very good, especially if you are looking for a fast meal around Canary Wharf (where everything is expensive!) Tortilla is very similar to Chipotle. A queue where you decide what ingredients do you want on your burrito, fajita, taco... They have two different sizes for burrito: medium (£5) or large (£6). I usually go for the medium chicken burrito with all the extras: beans, sour cream, cheese, mild sauce... It tastes good and all the ingredients seem fresh. And it is more than enough for me! I have seen the big burrito and looks massive! It is a very busy small shop, but the staff is fast and you never have to wait long to get your food. read more

Chi-po-tle!! Chi-po-tle!! Since I can't afford to fall asleep at work, I had the naked burrito (burrito without the tortilla wrap.) I know, the restaurant is called Tortilla but I chose not to eat a tortilla... First you pick your rice- Mexican or lime. Then the beans- pinto or black beans. Then you choose the meat - beef, chicken, pork. Then the toppings- salsa, cheese, guac, lettuce, lime. If you want guac, its 70 pence extra. There's a long line during lunch hours but the line moves relatively fast. It was pretty good, they put so much shredded cheese that it kinda defeated the purpose of having a naked burrito. So I was in Canary Wharf on Sunday to watch many thousand people run 26 miles... and was wondering what exactly I'd have for lunch. Being a Wharfie*, I had seen Tortilla open late last year, intended to go in and check it out, but hadn't had the chance. I also had the warnings of several London Yelpers ringing in my ears about the inability to get any sort of good Mexi-Cali food in London. Despite this, I went in as the queue wasn't too long, and I had a hankering for something meaty and spicy. The outcome was, surprisingly, really quite acceptable -- good, even! It's obviously designed as a lunch outlet -- primarily for take-away but the eat-in option works well too. The food was hot, freshly prepared and tasty -- good selection of fillings and salsas, and really quite reasonable: £6 for food and a soft drink in Canary Wharf is not bad going at all! As far as food choices in the wharf go, I'd say this is near the top. I wouldn't go anywhere near as far as saying this is good mexican, or even good california burrito, but it fills the hole. I feel a bit bad only giving three stars as I probably eat here at least three times a week, but I think that's just a sign of what's available in the wharf, not how good the food here is. read more

This place has breakfast combos for £4.99 for burrito and drink. Happy with this cheap and convenient location in Canary Wharf DLR station because we were looking for a quick bite after just arriving from Paris. Food: As a place that advertises itself as serving California burritos, they don't taste very Californian at all. Here, pastrami is considered "chorizo" and the tortilla skin is very thin to the point where it rips. It's kind of weird that they put sour cream with the eggs in a breakfast burrito, but I guess more toppings the better. First off, one HUGE point because just the decor of this place brought me back to my love, my hometown SF, with all the SF hot sauces and the picture of one of my favorite taquerias from SF: Pancho Villa..... Ok enough reminiscing, back to the FOOD! This is literally a rip-off of Chipotle where you pick your type of meal, and then ingredients and boom, theres your meal. I ordered the chicken salad, and i will say that the chicken was super moist, though a bit too salty for my taste. The endless Cholula sauce was tangy and tasty. Hubby ordered the burrito, which he was pretty disapointed with. He said the cilantro rice wasn't as fresh tasting as Chipotle or any of the SF based taquerias, and it was blander than what he was expecting. But no worries, you've got the Cholula! My colleagues and I went for a quick lunch together, and this place was almost as good as Chipotle (or perhaps, even better in some ways)! My burrito was solid with flavourful toppings. They stuffed in a healthy portion of everything I asked for, so I was happy with that as well. The line felt long at first, but it went by relatively quickly. After a while, when the peak lunch hour came about, it got even longer, so I suggest that you come earlier or later than the usual lunch hours. I am from California and Mexican food is my adopted native cuisine. Tortilla brands itself as a California-style burrito joint, but it is SO BLAND. I really wanted to give this place two stars, but I felt bad because it's not that the food is bad, it's just so utterly tasteless. I've tried their burritos and their burrito bowls (everything you put in a burrito dumped into a bowl). Their rice has no flavour, their 'salsa' is dull, and the meat is a bit on the dry side. The peppers were very undercooked and mostly raw, the hot salsa is more heat than substance and I would have liked more cheese. The ingredient overall need more flavour. This is an exact duplicate of Chipotle in the States. It's a build your own burrito, taco, etc take out place that has taken a proven concept and brought it to the UK. I met the owner and his wife over a pub lunch and beer and they are on to something here. The burritos are huge, you can get what ever you want in it and you will not go away empty. Here is a bonus, especially for us Yanks- the all you can drink soda machine. For some reason in the UK, restaurants sell their sodas ala carte so you have to pay for refills. Oh, and you can't get more than 2 cubes of ice per drink. Not at Tortilla, order a soda and you can fill your cup with crushed ice to the rim and your choice of Coke, Diet, Sprite, Fanta - all you can drink. Working in the Wharf requires a number of regular fast food places to 'get in and get out'. Tortilla offers what I consider reasonably priced grub with decent portions, with enough choices to really customise it however you see fit. The place is well manned, and I have never had to wait too long in line. The only thing that can let it down is that people there don't often seen overly happy or customer friendly, but i'll let that slide as they have to get through hundreds of customers an hour during busy periods, and that's always going to take its toll. Bottom line, would recommend. Especially for our friends from across the pond who miss Chipotle. read more

Simple, appropriate microbrew-ish beer selection, a decent mimic of Chipotle/Qdoba So after reading Mike and Deron's reviews, I hopped the DLR over to Canary Wharf today to check it out (well actually I went to see RED but it was sold out so Tortilla was my back up plan). I should preface this review with a bit of a warning that I'm a bit biased towards burrito places as Chipotle and Qdoba in the US have taught me a burrito should be approximately the size of a small child and be stuffed with more juicy meat, sauteed onions and peppers, multiple types of salsa, and all the usual burrito ingredients (ie rice, beans, sour cream, lettuce, cheese, and the all important guac) than you could possible ever eat. So where to start. The menu is simple (and it should be...it's a burrito not a 3 course meal) with four categories to pick: type of food ie. burrito, type of protein, rice/beans, and general misc stuff. The guys behind the counter aren't too knowledgeable about ingredients but are happy to cater to your requests. Pricewise, for 6 squids (including the drink) it's not bad for a lunch or early evening bite given the location. I ordered a large burrito (they have medium size which is about the size of a lunch wrap) which was a decent size by UK standards but not a two handed monster that I was hoping for (I was starving alright?). I got the carnitas (shredded pork marinated in adobo) and fajita peppers and onions. I opted for the tomato rice and the usual items as noted above. The pork was quite tasty although a bit too salty. It was very tender and just chewy enough to add texture to each bit before melting away. The peppers and onions were okay, having a bit of crunch but were overall limp and colourless as if they'd been sitting in the tepid water all day. The rice was soft and did its job of filling out the burrito well. I was disappointed in the salsa verde which should be flavourful with a bite but instead didn't make an appearance in the taste at all. However, this was mitigated by the addition of the piquante sauce in plentiful amounts which was great. I appreciated the unlimited soda refills though, rare in London and a great thing to slake a Saturday afternoon thirst. I'm not a huge fan of the high tables but it's not really an issue and seems to be standard for most burrito joints. Overall, I'll go back as it's the best I've seen in London in terms of value and taste but hopefully they will have improved before my next visit. I think also on a weekday when the turnover is higher the ingredients will be fresher and tastier. I'm not impressed yet, but I think the place has potential and plenty of room to grow in London. read more

I'm not a fan of Tortilla burritos in general and this branch is no different. I am sure the fact that all the ingredients are made fresh on site is great, but the problem is compared to the likes of Chipotle and Chilango they lack flavour. They are almost like some kind of diet burritos, missing that bit of something that gives them the great taste they should have. Add to that staff who don't take such great care in rolling the burrito and you have the makings of a catastrophic burrito containment failure when it comes to eating it. This Chipotle is a bit hard to find, because it's in a corner underneath the Canary Wharf DLR station. Also, for some reason, whenever I feel like eating here, it's closed. I'm pretty sure all other locations open until at least 10pm every day, so I don't know why this Chipotle location closes early on the weekend. Last time I was there, it seemed like this branch had more of a beer influence than normal franchises, so maybe the manager of this Chipotle decided to take things in a different direction. I'm not sure how much beer Chipotle sells, but this one at least gives you a couple of choices. Anyway, when I do eat here, it's alright. Unfortunately, though, it's no Taco Bell. read more

This is one of my go-to places for lunch. Quck, easy, and good for vegetarians. Americans will recognise it as a standard Chipotle-style burrito place. It's worth getting there early if you're going. By 12:30 the line is out the door and it stays that way until past 1:00. One other good thing is that they sell a number of pretty spicy hot sauces. From Cholula and Valentina on up to what I would call novelty sauces like "100% Pain" and Dave's insanity sauce. You can also consistently get good Mexican beers here, like Negra Modelo. read more

London woefully lacks decent Mexican food. Tortilla does in a pinch, but it's just not like the burritos back home in the Bay Area. So for London it's good Mexican, but my picky California standards it's really a two star joint. The chicken is often dry and the beans are lacking in flavor, although I am a fan of the fact that I can add fresh jalepenos to spice things up. It's a decent cheap eat near work. read more

Having been disappointed by Mexican dishes in London, I did not pay much attention to Tortilla in Canary Wharf. However, because my husband and I were pressed with time to catch a movie in Cineworld and hungry at the same time, we decided to give Tortilla a try. Surprisingly it was satisfying ( I am hoping that it was not because I was really starving and that everything is always delicious). The meat was seasoned well but not to die for. The portioned was fairly good for British standard. The ingredients were ok compared to the fresh ones I had before. Though it is comparable to Chipotle, it is definitely below in ranking. I liked it. Burritos come in Medium or Large sizes. I felt the medium was sufficient. Large would have been really a bit too much for me. Similarly they serve dos-tacos. My initial impression was that it would really small. But it wasn't. I felt it was almost like the medium burrito. But they served Dos Tacos as a pair. So it had almost similar amounts of rice, vegetables and extras. I guess if you were going for a quick lunch you could choose this place as it is pretty affordable, a full meal under 10 GBP including a drink. They even sell their beans in case you were interested. But that felt silly as most people buy such things from super markets, they would be better off selling beans in supermarkets. I feel this place value for money. If you think you should pay more for your food, then don't go here. :D But if you are like me, who is happy with little things in life, then you should eat from here. read more
