Tortilla does good burritos...I have to say. And lemme tell you, I'm a spoilt brat, having lived in San Francisco, a burrito-mecca, for quite a while! I've had my first Tortilla-burrito at Yelp event a while back and chatting with the owner, I found out that he's actually from San Francisco - which probably explains why I like their burritos. And since the event, I've kind of made Tortilla my default-Mexican food stop when my craving gets too strong. My tip: when you get a steak or pork burrito - ask them to NOT squeeze out the juice. I find that a juicy (well-lubricated) burrito is much tastier. Also, do invest in extra-guacamole, as this will uplift the flavour tremendously. Being a native Californian and Mexican, I've come to terms with expecting disappointment when it comes to Mexican food in London. Seriously...each time I've tried, my tummy cries baby unicorn tears. Despite it's super cheesy name, Tortilla gives Chipotle a run for their money! The owners are from Cali and have infused their eco-social awareness into their food. And at £5-£6, the burritos are reasonably priced. They serve margaritas and various Mexican beers like Tecate and Corona. If the Tortilla gods are reading this, you guys need to make Cali burritos. You can only get them in San Diego but they have carne asada fries in them and they pretty much best thing in life ever invented. Thank you. You can't compare Tortilla's burritos to authentic greasy-spoon-taqueria burritos...you have to go to Cali for that. But it's as close as you can get in the land of tea and crumpets! read more

Popped in with a friend for a burrito before a gig at o2 academy Islington! Very small location but quick and easy and clean, also very cheap and cheerful. The staff were very friendly & smiley straight away which was nice! I had a medium sized vegetable burrito with both kinds of rice - tomato and coriander & lime (I think) + both kinds of beans - refried and kidney (I think) with cooked peppers. Due to it being the veggie option I got a free dollop of guacamole, and left out the sour cream and cheese (cry) because they're not vegan friendly... I dream of the day burrito places have vegan friendly cheese! I also opted for some chilli and lime cashews which were completely amazing and I now need to get in bulk. I highly recommend trying them!! Unfortunately during our visit the frozen margarita machine was broken which was very disappointing, but other than that it was an enjoyable visit and would go again if I needed something nice and easy! read more

I understand why this place has 3.5 stars now. I came here a couple days ago to get a much needed post-workout burrito. The staff was lovely and super efficient, however, the main deal, the burrito was just ok. I got the pulled pork which I normally love (I noted they were not very generous with how much they gave me) perhaps it's because I said I wanted medium not large? I added cheese and guac and it was all on a bed of Mexican rice, pinto beans and some salsa. The issue was that with all those ingredients, the burrito was just bland... I devoured it because I was starving but at no point did I think mmmm. Very sad. The price £6 pounds for a filling burrito with fresh guacamole I thought was good, but without the flavours i can't see myself going back... will try chilango down the road next time. read more

Apparently all these burrito places in London are the same, not 'good' but not bad. Tortilla/Chilango/Chipotle.. whatever, right? Well let me be the voice of dissent. Because this was not as good as its neighbour Chilango. Admittedly I am a vegetarian so stop reading now if you are looking for a 'dirty' meat burrito. Their burritos are smaller than Chilango for the same price and the veg option was mostly just grilled onion. I hate onion but will tolerate it in a burrito because it is usually surrounded by goodness. There was no guac and cheesey goodness, only oniony badness. I kept waiting to hit that area of tasty burrito heaven hidden inside and it never arrived. Not a fan. I'll stick to Chilango, thanks. I do prefer the seating and decor though, feels less like a fast food joint and somewhere you can chill. read more

When I lived on the other side of the Atlantic, no-frills burritos were a mainstay of my diet - cheap, quick, tasty and not wholly unhealthy. So I certainly welcome the recent taqueria invasion of London. Tortilla forms part of the vanguard. The inevitable comparison to its US/Mexican brethren is never going to be favourable - the quality is not quite up to snuff and the price is somewhat inflated. But it's also irrelevant - I've not given up noodles because no Pad Thai in London can live up to Bangkok. The bottom line: I go back quite regularly. read more

It's good if you like bland beans chucked together with bland rice, bland cheese, bland fajita vegetables and some lettuce, completely slathered with chipotle sauce that looks like Branston pickle but doesn't taste that nice. Otherwise, it's not so good. The guacamole is fine and the beer selection is pretty good, that is, if you can look past the fact that half of it was American rather than Mexican. But if you're not exclusively in the mood for guacamole and beer from the Americas, then Tortilla probably isn't your best option. Head up Upper Street and go to Chilango. Hooowever, in London, the land of good indian and pub food, Tortilla is like Johnny Knoxville in The Ringer. Huge burritos, not very expensive. They have guac (which isn't even terrible!). They have multitudes of hot sauce for you to drown your miseries in. Seriously, I watched a guy chug half a bottle of hot sauce yesterday. I am sure the rest of his night (or at least the next morning) wasn't the most pleasant . Overall, I will eat here again. Probably many more times. The burrito itself is decent. No, I don't think it's quite as good as the Chilango competition up the road, but it's still very tasty and dare I say it, better value for money (in terms of size). The english equivalent of Chipoltle. Went here with friends yesterday for lunch. While I had just eaten about an hour ago, and had only gone to hang out I couldn't resist trying the fresh Mexican food which was impossible to find in London-until now. With fresh steak burritos, salsa, and tortilla chips, a trip to Tortilla gave me exactly what I had been missing from home. Burrito Quest- Tortilla takes the #1 spot Finally some good burritos in London!! Love the pork, super juicy and the guac is so good and served in a large container for maximum chip dippage. Also, on it's own, I would give this place a 3 but the sauce that mimics Taco Bell Hot Sauce (without the packages with the funny sayings) that they have here at Tortilla bumps this place up to 4 stars. I'm a fan of this Tortilla branch. Given how hotly debated the merits of Mexican food (and by that I also mean Cali-Mex and all other derivatives) in London are, I wasn't really expecting to. It just happened to be on my route and I thought I'd give it a try after last year's Elite event at Tortilla's branch in Leadenhall Market. I opted for a regular chicken Fajita Wrap with Guacomole for £5.65. It was moist, nourishing and surprisingly tasty. So much so, that I rapidly found myself regretting not buying a large one. I had mine to go, but the seating looked reasonable and the staff were friendly and quick to serve. I will return. read more

My friend introduced me to this place after I kept whining about missing Mexican food after my years spent living in California. I have tried Mexican food in ample places in London and all over Europe for that matter and most of then simply don't taste good, in fact they taste bad.. just like the lack of decent Thai food in London! BUT when I walked into Tortilla and saw the pictures of amazing Mexican places in San Francisco such as Pancho Villa I not only wanted to cry, cuz I lived just around the block from there, but I also had hope! And in fact the burritos are quite good (for London standards, but I will never get a California burrito here) and they even serve micro-brewed San Francisco beer Blue Moon! Also, I am a pescetarian and their veggie burritos and guacamole are yummy! I love re-friend beans and Tortilla's don't come with beacon as the re-fried beans from Chipotle. I only wish that it would have fish tacos, but none of the places I have tried in London have them, so I guess its just a bit too much to ask! I am taking two points off because I think the prices could be a bit lower and to go to the bathrooms, you have to walk through the kitchen which I think is a bit weird, but I guess better than no bathroom! Like some reviewers before me, I am from California...SoCal, to be exact; ie: North Northern Mexico. I *know* me some Mexican food. Is this good? Well, it's London good. In California, this place is just above a Taco Bell, but well below the hole-in-the-wall place where the meat is questionable and chopped up by a one-armed man named Flaco (who is anything but). Does that mean I won't go back? Hay-ul no!! I've been 6 times in 5 weeks!! It's not great, but it's better than nothing!! The chips are abysmal, the carnitas need more flavor, and the guacamole is passable, at best. But the chicken is really good, and with enough of the hot sauce that they leave on the table (not the Valentino, the...Cholua? Can't recall the name), it makes up for the lack of...something that's missing. I'm not sure what that something is; perhaps lard? Perhaps Abuelita Concepcion doing a Hail Mary over the frijoles? Decent for a burrito joint in London. Kind of like a Chipotle, but not as good. The steak was tasty and the rest of the fillers were good. The tortilla was a little on the dry side but I guess some people may like that. I like mine on the softer side. I thought it was weird how the twist the ends to wrap the burrito in foil. In California, this would definitely be a 3 or more likely 2 star joint. I, like Jennifer H. used to live in San Franciso and frequented the iconic staples of Taqueria history like Taqueria Cancun and Pancho Villa. Ok, no way is Tortilla like those. However, some of the worst meals vie paid for thus far in London have been Mexican, and this was not one fo them. In London, when the burrito craving hits, this will do the trick. And I didn't try the guacamole, but it was the most authentic, best looking guacamole I've seen thus far in London. It was chunky and vibrant green, so they didn't water it down with soured cream like I've frequently seen here in the UK. I will def try that next time. Having spent the last few years bouncing back and forth between Los Angeles, Mexican Mecca, and Colorado, birthplace of Chipotle Mexican Grill, I've grown pretty critical of San Francisco-style burrito joints. However, this judgement has been curtailed in London primarily due to the fact that the city is almost completely devoid of the giant, affordable burritos that are commonplace back in the states. This being the case, I was excited to give Tortilla a shot. Location-wise Tortilla is great. The area surrounding Angel Tube Stop is full of both shopping and dining gems, and the establishment is mere meters from the tube entrance/exit. From there, it's pretty much impossible to write up a review of Tortilla without constant comparisons to Chipotle Mexican Grill, so I won't even try. The food is good and authentic in terms of what a San Francisco-style burrito looks like in the states, but the size of the burritos and the quality and taste of the ingredients really do fall short of what Chipotle can offer. Granted, for 5 GBP, it's hard to complain, but if you're looking for good American-style Burrito, just stick with Chipotle Mexican Grill. read more

So just before a trip to the theatre, me and a friend popped in here for a quick dinner. Great place to go if you only have 15 mins to eat, since friendly and quick service is a given. And burrito is super filling, so no rumbling stomachs throughout the performance. Win! We grabbed a couple of spots to sit in, not easy since there isn't much seating here. Burritos all round, I went for large since I was starving and basically inhaled it, but a good portion size and well bulked out with rice and beans. You get a pretty good choice here and at 6 quid for a large burrito I think it good value for money. Only 3 stars since it don't taste of very much to be honest. They ask you about a variety of options to add - salsa, sour cream, different rices, different sauces. But I couldn't taste the tomato in my rice, the medium spice in my sauce or the cheese. It was mainly salty pulled pork (which did fill a hole) and the black beans. All in all, I've had a better burrito, but for convenience and price you can't really complain :) read more

Perhaps I was a little biased by the circumstances (not having had a burrito for over a month), but my chicken burrito with black beans, sour cream, cheddar, salsa fresca, salsa verde, doused in about 1/4 cup of Cholula hit the spot. I've tried the naked burrito (burrito without the wrap) here twice. I'm not sure why but I expected better. The carnita naked burrito I had yesterday was rather bland, to be honest, and when I added hot sauce, the sauce was more salty than spicy. I'm pretty sure I've had better in London, though nothing springs to mind somehow. Maybe Luardo's? Service is average at best. My server yesterday had a rather strong accent and didn't speak all that loudly, so I couldn't understand anything she was saying, and had to ask her to repeat herself a number of times. She seemed to get irritated by that, and, in all honesty, I don't usually have a problem with most accents, so I'm just sayin' I don't think the problem lay entirely with me. Pretty mediocre, but the prices are fair and they really cram all the "stuff" in there. While assembling, she really piled on the meat - I had the barbecoa beef - which when rolled up, became a thick core of juicy cow straight down the center. Some bites were full-on pulled beef and nothing else. I want to say this was too much, and I even had some of almost everything else (rice, grilled veggies, beans, salsa, sour cream, jalapenos, squeeze of lime) but they got drowned in the salty abundance of beef. At the same time, when it comes to the meat, most places will err on the side of stingy, so its hard to really gripe about it. I tend to think that when you're eating a burrito a large part of experience is the simple glory of eating something so solid and filling. So on that point, they win. read more

I really dig Tortilla but I have to admit, this location is not my favorite. It's a bit small and has low ceilings but since I generally take my meal to go, I'm not affected much by the space. For £5, a medium naked burrito or burrito is a real bargain. The portion size is larger than what I would expect for £5. It tastes great, fills me up and makes me happy. Probably my favourite burrito place in Angel, the portions and prices are decent and the flavours are great. I love cholula sauce and the extra large bottles of it allows me to go crazy with my application of the beautiful sauce. Time to get sampling.. This is our closest branch so decided to grab a quick lunch whilst on a flying shopping trip. The actual location is fine almost opposite Angel tube the building itself not as cute as Leadenhall Market but bright and clean. Had a pulled pork medium burrito with hot sauce quality just as good as our last visit so they have the production consistency right. I wasn't impressed with this place at all. I usually frequent another Mexican eaterie a little further up the road but I tried this for a change. As soon as I walked in I got the impression that the place was a little dirty. When I ordered my burrito the guy who served me wasn't particularly friendly or helpful and the whole process of ordering seemed cold and reminded me a little of getting school dinners. The food didn't taste particularly good either - for a start the burrito was filled too full so it unwrapped immediately and I had to eat it with a knife and fork, and the fillings just seemed very plain. I was impressed with the US style free drinks refills, but they didn't even try to hide the fact that their coke was heavily watered down. There are much better Mexican places in the area - I'd recommend giving this place a miss and walking a little further up the road. read more

surprisingly, i liked it here... I'm from California. So naturally, I craved burritos for the year I was in London. And by burritos I mean anything near legit, not Texas embassy (thats a whole other review). So Tortilla opened it, and I tried it once, and probably have been back at least once a week for a quick dinner or drunken lunch snack. Large chicken burrito with guac. I don't know why I always get the large, but it's phenomenal, and once again.. FOOD COMA after I'm done. A medium should be enough for a woman like me. Also, the soda with crushed iced here is amazing. Or the magaritas! :) Oh Tortilla, what would we do without you???
