Wow! I heard about this place a while ago. The two things I heard were fresh tortillas and expensive. At long last I was able to try it out. The place is bright, clean, and welcoming. You start out selecting a "tortilla," which is a ball of dough that gets pressed and cooked right in front of you. What a great experience! I can imagine that gets difficult when the line gets long, but it was a really interesting experience. The options for meat, veggies, and salsa all looked great. I typically get cravings for a burrito at least once a week. When I've had that craving since eating at Tortilla Shack, I've considered my various local options and decided to eat a different type of food because I knew the tortilla would disappoint after what I got at Tortilla Shack. I can't give a better endorsement than that: Tortilla Shack ruined other burrito places for me. read more

They came with two salsas, green and orange and the green was good, something you would expect the orange had a little sweetness to it and was good also. I got a side of rice and beans which was a pretty good size for the $2 each it cost. The beans had a flavor to them I can't put my finger on. Tried this place out when I was in the area. Lots to choose from, reminds me of a chipotle but feels a little healthier. You can get different type of tortillas. You can also get fish taco here. Got some tacos and they were okay but the tortilla wasn't cooked all the way and all the meat and stuff just kept breaking the tortilla. They aren't shy to load up the burrito and tacos. Also got a steak burrito and it was good as well! Next time I would want to try the fish tacos. They also got different sauces even chili oil but that was okay more so like that on noodles than a burrito or taco to each their own. I love their green salsa though! I've driven by and seen the sign many times but it wasn't until a local food influencer reviewed them that I knew I had to come and try them out. The decor is super festive and clean. Well, I think I found the best burrito place in town! for starters, they make their own tortillas right in front of you. Couldn't get any more fresh than that. The ingredients are flavorful, fresh and generous in portion. The staff is awesome and helps first timers walk through the process. Don't think this is gonna be chipotle or something like that because it's not. It's a totally different experience of flavors exploding in your mouth. Andres was our tortilla maker today and guided us through the process. What a delightful and customer centric person he is. Also got to meet the manager/owner Adam. What an authentically nice guy he is and appreciative of customer feedback. I had the citrus chicken burrito and my wife had the steak nachos. Both were easily two meals. Their location is bright and clean with an abundance of napkins, which will need as you munching down on these delectable burritos. You definitely need to go to this place and sample the many different choices they have and enjoy the great customer service. We look forward to going back again and having another awesome lunch. Oooooh very nice new taqueria with ultra fresh handmade tortillas. I tried the fish burrito. You can choose your tortilla and watch it come to life on the plancha. Then choose from a host of ingredients. I added pinto beans. The burrito was great, the texture of the tortilla was the best part, so soft, melting into the filling. The Baja fish was good, could have been a bit crispier, but still good. I loved the green salsa and the creamy white sauce. I'm looking forward to trying the tacos. The decor is very clean, pleasant and comfortable, with light wood booths. I especially like how this place has easy access to the highway so you can grab a fresh, yummy meal then hit the road! read more

I get the nachos every time and they're so delicious! The cheese sauce is chefs kiss. I get the pork, I tried the steak recently and my only complaint there is that it can be pretty fatty. I have not had any issues with the pork though! I tell my husband like once a week, "let's order tortilla shack for dinner" . Obsessed would be an understatement to describe how I feel about my experience here. Totally wowed me!! Such a fun addition to the Santa Cruz food scene. I love how causal it is, and I also love that you go down the counter and pick exactly what you want. It's like a chipotle but everything is made fresh. They literally cook the tortilla to order. My whole family went. A few of us got burritos and one got fish tacos. Everything was delicious!! I got the pastor pork and it had such a good flavor to it. We got a side of chips and guac and the guac was so fresh and yummy. The churro fries are an absolute cannot miss. Must order. My mom said they did a phenomenal job with the sugar cinnamon combo. Also they are the perfect size and sweetness. I was also very excited to see a soda fountain with Diet Coke. They had a very good brew. Also they have good straws. Absolutely loved this experience and will be back. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The decorations were totally adorable too!! The service was also really great and they were very nice and helpful. Things are on the pricier side but I did feel like they had quality ingredients and good portion sizes. If you put your hand up please stop reading. if you're looking for fake cheese, fake tortilla chips, and canned Jalepenios you won't find those things here. Scrolling through yelp as usual Ive looked through and tried a lot of nachos from several different resetruants in the area. However, ive only tried a majority of them through delivery only rather than dining in. Yesterday was the first time that I had ever seen "Tortilla Shack" on Door Dash with an enticing picture of a burrito with bright green fresh looking salsa oozing out of the lightly crips tortilla. I reviewed the menu and if Im going to be honest with you, the picture they had for the Nachos didn't look great. I kept scrolling but finally broke down and decided to take a chance. My biggest worry is that whenever I usually order Nachos for delivery the Chips underneath all the cheese and sauces begin to absorb the moisture and become unenjoyable and soggy. Ive been disappointed several times and when I do order a plate of Nachos, I try my best to contact either the delivery person or even the establishment itself which sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't. I tried calling to inform about the modifications that I wanted for my order, but no call, no answser, the Door dasher unresponsive, I was expecting the worst possible outcome and braced myself for disappointment. My order finally arrived after 20 minutes or so which is not bad, but its not great. I opened my order and was greeted with lots of sauces, tons of pickled jalepenios and other veggies, extra sauces and sour cream on the side, and the biggest thick crunchy not at all soggy chips laid underneath all the toppings which left me impressed. there was so much sauce these nachos were loaded up! The only thing I wish there was more of was cheese. As I ate and dug I couldn't find the cheese, but I enjoyed the pickled veggies that added a refreshing crunch. I was not disappointed and I think this might just be met new favorite place to fulfill my weekly Nacho cravings and I can't wait to be back again to order and try more of what they have to offer read more

Great new spot for taqueria food. Prompt & friendly service. The menu was confusing at first, I had to read & digest the instructions before ordering. I decided to go with the three tacos. I couldn't decide on tortillas so I got one of each. Honestly, the tortillas are really delicious! I chose three different meats: chicken, pastor, and the fish. I chose simple fillings, one in each taco: black beans, pinto beans, and zucchini. They were all good. For toppings, I chose Cabbage and pico de gallo & cheese, no sauces. Also got the chips of salsa with chipotle sauce and pico de gallo. Everything tasted great except for the fish. Too thickly breaded, and the fish itself didn't have great flavor. That's why I'm giving only 4 stars not 5. If they offer a grilled fish option I'd try that, but would steer clear of the fried fish if there's a next time. There was plenty of seating inside, and I loved the plants. A great alternative to Chipotle, which has gone downhill since it has become a sellout to the corporate mindset of food. This place feels a lot more fresh and healthy, except for the fried fish. read more

Ordered Tortilla Shack to-go, so I can't speak on the full TS experience yet. I got the sirloin steak quesadilla and my guy got the cheesy steak burrito. The steak was pretty tough, so not sure if it's the lackluster cut of meat coupled with how it was prepared, but it wasn't great. The tortilla was good but I was just underwhelmed. I had a big bite of the cheesy steak burrito which was just a wet mess with the queso, coupled with that tough sirloin steak. Can't say I won't try it again but I would opt for Chipotle as their meat tastes better and seems to be better quality. read more

5 stars all around! Tortilla shack is now my go to spot for burritos in the santa cruz area! Everything was so fresh, delicious, all the sauces, the unique and tasty toppings and the sirloin steak was so tender, flavorful & amazing! The cheesysteak chipotle burrito on their specials is not to miss, definitely try that! They make the Tortilla fresh, all different flavors like original white flour, red made with chipotle peppers or a green Tortilla that is garlic & spinach based, then they cook it right on the flat top! I love that they have so many different options, even someone who is vegetarian would be satisfied! They have burritos, bowls, salads, nachos & tacos to choose as your starting point. Lots of fresh ingredients at the toppings bar, the variety of different salsas to choose from was great also! I love that their spicy salsas are actually spicy! The staff was super friendly and very helpful. They were fast with the line too with about 6 people ahead of me. Each person at a station really helped with the flow. They all had a smile on their face and willing to answer any questions. The owner is lucky to have these 3 individuals working at the front & cooks in the back pumping out consistent food! I didn't want this burrito to end! Maybe one of the best burritos I've ever had, and absolutely the most fresh and tasty tortilla I've encountered. Lots of indoor seating available, and assembly line style of ordering. You can be in and out in a matter of minutes! They press and heat the tortillas right in front of you. I recommend the garlic spinach, but you really can't go wrong. Their steak and al pastor are my favorite protein options- the steak is flavorful and nicely seared, and the al pastor is wonderfully juicy. It's definitely a bit fatty but not overkill, it added to the texture. They have an abundance of different sauces and salsa, I loaded up on the tomatillo and pico de gallo. Their fajita vegetables are soooo good, would definitely recommend especially with the steak. Grab the chips as well, they're thick and salty and wonderful. I can't wait to come back here! I went to the tortilla shack this week for some lunch with my family and it was amazing. The place was clean and fresh.. I stepped up t9 order and they were very helpful. I told them it was my first time in. they make different flavors of tortillas so I got a trio of tacos.. one was a chipotle, green chili, and white flour. And then I got their pork beef and chicken tacos.. I could only eat one or they're very big and I took the other two home and they have all the toppings anything you want it was really good. I ate there for the first time today. Ordered a Green Baja fish burrito. Yes, it tasted okaaaay. But, I am subtracting two stars for the STRETCHY texture of their tortilla. It was spinach and garlic. VERY hard to eat since it was rubbery and stretched every time I tried to take a bite. Could barely swallow the pieces. This is NOT the way a tortilla should be! I'm subtracting another point because the panko-coated Baja fish wasn't that good. I prefer a thicker, crispier batter. This got soggy quickly. Overall, it was a nice place. Plenty of tables. Friendly employees. But I'll have to think twice before going back for a burrito, at least. My go-to for delicious burritos is Mijo's. in Capitola Village. Their tortillas are NOT stretchy! I have been enjoying this food for the past month after we discovered their fresh homemade and delicious tortillas. We love the place so much. We often go and have a dinner and then bring home more of the tortillas for the following days. They're great. In addition, the Tortilla shack fixed us up with a Large order for a party at our house. They provided us with so many delicious meats, tortillas, salads and salsa. I have ordered large quantities from other places in the past but I've never had such quality food packaged and prepared so well. The restaurant itself is clean and comfy. It's easy-on easy-off to the freeway. Another thing that I like is that owner is already a proven successful and local restaurateur in Santa Cruz. I like to support local businesses. read more

I'm giving four stars. That's one short of five because one of the guys making our tacos shouldn't be in customer service or probably making tacos. The tacos however were delicious, I've tried all the meats now and loved them all, and as someone who doesn't eat much meat this is saying something. I went a fajita route with onions and peppers and added cheese & the Baja sauce for some creamy flavor. The star here is the DELICIOUS tortilla, so much so that i felt bad for all the people around me with burrito bowls and salads. While they were probably judging my carbs. I would never turn down a tortilla at this place. I went with spinach garlic and it made the tacos perfect. Hopefully they'll streamline customer service a bit before my next return. Maybe it was his first day. It was hard for me to not jump in and try to fix the issue, because he was the ONLY issue with my otherwise perfect lunch. I was excited to try this new place. My go-to is Taq. Pericos. I got their Baja burrito... it was very bland; even when I put the pink habanero sauce in it. The fish was dry and wasn't beer battered. The one thing that really turned me off was that it was more than 50% rice! More like 75%! The only thing I liked was the tortilla. There's two entrances but you may want to enter closest to the freeway so you don't have to walk through the packed dining room to get to the start of the line. The fresh tortilla is chef's kiss. For me, it goes a bit downhill from there. I thought I was ordering an a la carte steak burrito and as I moved down the line similar to Chipotle I could add items into my burrito. Not so. A man started filling my burrito for me with french fries, a bunch of queso dip and it was all wrapped up and packaged before I could say anything. I thought. Maybe this is what he likes and he wants me to try it. So I paid my $18. It was tasty the first two bites and then it got extremely salty. Maybe I'll go back and speak a little bit louder and try to get a more veggie oriented healthful burrito. But for now I like that it's quick right off the highway and you get a fresh tortilla. I just need to work on communicating what fillings I want. I do think $18 is a bit steep for a burrito but maybe when I get one that isn't stuffed with queso and fries it the price will come down read more
