We were originally going to book a different fishing charter, but it was full. When we called Tortuga IV, they took our reservation right away....which was nice. The lady manning the desk and taking payments was not very friendly but that only takes 5 minutes. We left the dock right on time and headed out to the reef to bottom fish. The best part about the day was how well Rich took care of everyone around us. You can tell he genuinely cares for people, loves seeing guests catching fish and is good at his job. Jessie was also friendly and helpful, and so was the captain...who surprisingly was also helping on deck. A couple of people on board caught a handful of decent sized fish but many others...including the three people in or party didn't catch anything of significant size. Most of the fish were just bait stealers. We did move a couple of times and a couple of nice size sharks were reeled in, but that was about it. Not the fault of the crew, just a bad day. They do sell snacks, water, beer and soda and that prices are reasonable. There is not much shade anywhere on the boat and several people had to go inside to cool down. Overall it wasn't a bad day but not the best boat I've ever been on. read more

We read positive reviews from tripadvisor but it was far from positive during our experience. First off, their boat's fuel filter clogged up and we were delayed 30-40 minutes from our timed departure. The owner took everyone's money and did not let us know what was going on. When everyone's distaste and anxiety was too much for the group, the owner let us on. Their boat's air conditioning was off and they forced all the anglers into the cabin to do a "safety training" while they were still trying to fix their boat's issue. As they were doing the safety training, one of the anglers on board fainted due to heat exhaustion. That's when the boat owner called off the trip. She was totally unapologetic for disrupting everyone's afternoons. I would give them ZERO stars if I could, but the mates were okay. What a waste of time. I highly recommend another boat if someone wants to go fishing in Key West. read more

We are a family that enjoys fishing, whether it be our little local pond stocked with sunny's or surf fishing off the coast in LBI. We have gone out several times on deep sea fishing party boats in LBI so are familiar with the routine. Knowing that Key West has some of the best fishing in the world, I researched fishing trips. Many of the trips that are highly reviewed on Yelp are private charters, meaning that a fisherman will personally take you out on his boat and help you fish. These private charters will run you $600 or more...... So I looked into the party boat option. What an amazing day we had on the Tortuga Party Boat!!! Luck was definitely on our side. 1. The boat has the capacity to bring 49 guests to fish. The day of our trip there were only 16 guests booked. It was like a private charter. 2. The first mate Ray was just a great guy. Friendly, helpful. He took us to four different locations, and sure enough, our last stop turned out to be the motherload of fish. As soon as we dropped our lines in that beautiful azure clear water, we would get a bite. At the end of the day we had over 3 lbs of fish that were fileted for us. We ended up going to Turtle Kraals with our filets and had a great dinner. I highly recommend the Tortuga. The captain and the first mate went out of their way to search the seas so everyone would have a successful fishing trip. Finally, as the Tortuga pulls in to dock and the First Mate begins to cut up and filet all the fish that were caught that day..............a huge group of Tarpon will gather at the boat to eat the scraps that are tossed overboard into the water. This is an amazing site to see. (Tarpon are gigantic fish, some 6 feet in length). On our day, an Goliath Grouper, that must have weighed over 250 pounds, also came by to scavenge. For $55 each my boyfriend and I had a wonderful morning on the ocean. We both caught several fish and I even caught the biggest of the day! There are a lot of charter companies in KW that will charge $800+ for a small group but the "party" atmosphere was nice. You meet great people from all over and shoot the breeze while your'e fishing. The crew was so helpful, knowledgeable and fun. By the end of the day the two of us caught about a dozen fish, 9 of which we could keep. Unfortunately the 25 lb grouper had to go back in the sea. Judy the owner was super. We called her after our fishing trip in Key Largo got cancelled due to wind because she was recommended by our Key Largo charter as they were refunding us. I was a little worried going on a single recommendation (instead of meticulously researching), but I'm so happy I didn't. Tortuga IV was everything a good party boat should be: easy to book! easy to find (right next to accessible public parking)! SUPER awesome, knowledgeable, and helpful captain, crew (Jeremy & Kevin were great). We weren't getting into fish at first, and they moved around, kept us motivated, and even stayed out a little longer so we could all hook into some great fish. They really cared about us catching fish and weren't indifferent to our experiences, as I've noticed some crews can get with their party boat customers. Terrible.. made a reservation months ago.. called to confirm the morning before the trip , which they confirmed, then 7:30 at night they send a text saying its canceled for the next day because they booked thru another boat who had a private charter. When I called the lady back to say I was upset she was so rude and said stop calling me, nothing I can do. My 10 year olds heart was broken. Gulf Stream helped us find another charter only to find out that tortuga's boat is not sea worthy. Has a hole in the side of it. They are booking 3rd party boats!! DO NOT TRUST THEM! Decided last minute to spend our last day in the Keys doing a little deep sea fishing; we're so glad we did! We had 3 stops total and Mick was so quick to help us anytime we had a fish or a snag. Between the two of us we caught about 16 total, 8 of which were big enough to keep. We took them across the dock to Dante's for their hook & cook per the recommendation of the crew; they were spot on. We loved everything we tried. They were so friendly & accommodating! I wasn't dressed for fishing as it wasn't in the plans and Mick brought me a long sleeved shirt to wear so I didn't freeze. They have snacks and drinks available on board for cash only, don't forget to bring some cash for the guys as well; they work for tips only and are SO GREAT!! I wish I could leave a negative star on this review. Got there early so we could be on the boat and get a spot on the back. First ones they're first ones to pay first ones on the boat took our tags put them on our poles only to be told moments later they had sold the whole back of the boat without telling anybody else are offering that we could pay more to be on the back. When getting off the boat was not offered a refund and was treated very rudely by the lady that takes the money telling us it was not her fault that the back was sold even though she's the one that sold it. Was threatened by mate and if we did not leave the dock he would get off the boat and go to jail. We are local we will not recommend this charter to any of our friends and family we will find another head boat. read more

Great experience on board, but the lady at the counter was extremely rude with unnecessary comments. Once on board the deck hand was patient and knowledgeable made the experience pleasurable. They informed us of where to take our fish to be cooked. If you can get past the lady on the phone and counter with the rude attitude the actual fishing trip is a great experience. read more

DO NOT BOOK!!! We live in Florida and booked hoping to take fish home. Now, we understand that there are bad fishing days. But when you are on a boat where you see their so called "regulars" pulling in enough fish to fill 5 gallon buckets while you are catching nothing, something smells fishy, PUN INTENDED. They position boat so that their regulars catch fish while the tourist catch nothing. As I stated before, I live in Florida and this is the worst fishing boat that we ever have been on. Everything was great until the end: the boating went smooth, the weather pleasant, and the captain and crew attentive while the lures were out. Once we docked, however, they misplaced the 2 fish we caught; as this was our first fishing experience (read: one of our group caught her first fish ever), we were disappointed. The crew gave us 2 fillets of random fish, and offered us more fillets once they returned from their afternoon fishing tour 4 hours later. This didn't sit well with us as if it were simply fish we were looking for, buying $65 worth of fish a person at a supermarket would be much more convenient and cost effective- no, we were there for the experience. We spoke to the woman at the ticket stand, who in turn spoke to the captain and crew. According to the crew, we had not heard our ticket called for our fish (even though we had waited 40 minutes post docking for our fillets), making the ordeal our fault. Adding insult to injury, when we asked for our 20% tip back, the crew claimed that we had given them nothing even though they had thanked us 45 minutes earlier. Our tip was eventually returned, we kept the fillets of random fish, we declined returning for more pieces of random fish, and left annoyed. I don't know if this was a one-off, or the usual, but had I known that this would be the outcome I would have opted for another fishing tour. read more

While in the keys we saw this boat returning from the AM run and thought let's fish. My wife and called and headed for the pier. The back of the boat is definitely locals only and friends, ok I don't live here I get it. We took a spot towards the rear of the boat and one of the guys was talking with us and telling us how he knows the owner and even though he owns his own personal boat he just wanted a quick trip. Fish all day, crew was nice, gears a little beat but hey it's a party boat. The owners friend was funny made some jokes about the smaller fish I caught, but I only saw him catch one short. Here's the main bitch I have, come back to the dock and after all the tip wrangling is over they fillet your fish. We caught two smaller yellow tail and one really large one. They call for the owners friend he has two large fish scaled and gutted and a bag of fillets about 8-10lbs I'd say. We get called and take ours to hook and cook next door and our big fish is missing. There is no doubt there is some skimming going on by the crew. The owners friend didn't catch anything and didn't have a hook even in the water 2/3 of the time. RIDICULOUS - feeling very disappointed and cheated. Please stick to just taking out your friends and regulars and don't bilk the tourists. Am I to believe that all four of us on the boat are so "unlucky" or so "unskilled" that we left without one fish (so that's $260 for naught) and yet other people caught 10 to 20 without a problem? Did your crew ever notice that no one on the starboard side was reeling anything in and that you always positioned us so our lines went under the vessel? Did the crew make any accommodation? So what does that make the crew - neglient, ignorant, inattentive or stupid? Your choice. YOU ARE IN A SERVICE INDUSTRY. Get off the high horse and remember your customers are what make or break you. Worst fishing experience I've ever had and would caution everyone from going on this vessel. By the by - I'm a licensed 3rd Asst Engineer and was pretty well surprised that we had to sit at the pier while your crew swicthed out batteries for 40 minutes and then we were assured we would "make that time up" on the way back. The Tortuga IV was my maiden voyage for deep sea fishing, and I'm so glad it was! We found them on line and the price was $55 plus tax each, but when I arrived to check in the price had gone up to $65 because of fuel prices...they were more than happy to honor the earlier quoted price. Tyler was the 1st Mate and he was mighty matey at that. He was an absolute dear to my handicapped mother and practically carried all 6 feet of her onto and off of the boat. The Captain and the 2nd Mate were so incredibly friendly, too. Even though the fish weren't biting as much as they hoped, they got out there with their fishing prowess and reeled them in for everyone to catch. It was very gallant of them and it insured that we all had a great time. When I caught fishies, one of the fellas would come over and hold it up for me and the camera because there was no way in hell I was going to touch a nearly dead fish...they didn't even bat an eye about it. My husband, mother and I all caught fish and then Tyler and the 2nd mate cleaned them for us. $165 plus a $35 tip, 4 hours, and several fish fillets later...these guys were well worth it. Mother in-law made reservations a month ago. Never received an email confirmation from Judy the owner. MIL called Judy to confirm yesterday via phone. We showed up at the location that Yelp and trip advisor has off Caroline Street. She called Judy and Judy said that she sent a text message that the charter was going out of the Roosevelt marina which was never received. I'd highly be fishy of this charter. Buyer beware! Prior to boarding the Tortuga IV, we asked if there was a military discount. Judy proceeded to inform us that the owner of the ship was an eight year Vietnam Vet and he said "Take care of 'em boys". Well take care of us they did, what would normally be $130 was only $88 for my wife & me, right then I knew we were in for a great four hour trip. Although this was a head boat and not a private charter ($400-$800) we were both excited do be on the water for our afternoon fishing excursion. As Tyler welcomed us aboard we asked if there was any light tackle aboard, he said get a seat close to the back and mark a couple of bottom rigged fishing rods. We shoved off right on time headed for our first reef, about 20 mins. or 4-5 miles later we anchored up and began bottom fishing, grouper, snapper and grunts oh my! The catch was on for the whole boat, then just like Christmas morning Tyler handed Deana and me our very own spin casters, we were in heaven. Don't get me wrong bottom fishing is fun and on this boat very productive, we just like the fight of light tackle. At 4pm we moved to another reef about 5 minutes away same story, great fishing. Deana hooked a small blacktip shark and the crew did everything they could to help her land it but it cut line at the boat. We chose the 2pm excursion because sunset is about 5:45 in November, what a better way to top off a great fishing trip than with the sun sizzling into the water as we head for the dock. Once at the dock, smiles were abundant ,we all tipped graciously and disembarked. We waited maybe 3 minutes for Tyler to filet our 8 keepers, said our many thanks again & went on our very pleased way. These people know how to run a business & that is through customer service! Please understand the fishing experience was superb. Jeff and Rich were the consummate hosts (first mate and captain) and should not be held responsible for the DEPLORABLE customer (dis)service of the owner, Judy. Honestly, I work in Human Resources so I have a pretty thick skin. However, this lady (term used loosely) almost single-handedly ruined my trip to Key West. We purchased our tickets days ago at the Naval base (MWR); therefore we figured the process would be seamless. How wrong we were! My relatively intellectual family walked around the dock area outside of "Dante's" several times looking for the check in. Despite the fact that we saw a booth clearly marked "Tortuga's IV", we kept searching BECAUSE NOBODY WAS MANNING THE BOOTH BEFORE CHECK IN. We felt certain we must be in the wrong place. The family split up and my very polite son called the number on the website where an inarticulate person answered the phone harshly guiding us back to the place we started (the unmanned booth). Low and behold...there were people there when we arrived. I politely said, "Is this the place where the fishing trip excursion goes out?" Judy RUDELY pointed down at the sign in front of her booth (that we walked by 100 times with the pictures on it) and said, "Yes...this is it...don't you see the sign and the pictures?" Needless to say, I was aghast at her tone, but could not have dreamed at that time that she was the owner. My son and I proceeded to tell her we were checking in for our reservation of 4, and she wanted payment. We explained that we booked at the MWR, and she then demanded to see my military ID. I told her I didn't have it, but shouldn't need it, since WE SHOWED IT WHEN WE PURCHASED THE TICKETS ON THE MILITARY INSTALLATION DAYS AGO. She made me feel like I was trying to get on her boat without paying. My husband finally made it back to the booth and politely (but unnecessarily) pulled his military ID out so we could get our boarding passes. (It was clear to me at this point that Judy and I were not destined to be friends.) She abrasively gave us our boarding passes and told us to be back at 10 minutes before departure. Admittedly, I needed a drink by then. Fast forward....boarding time! Some nice people were lined up to buy tickets for the excursion and Judy was clammoring around the vessel not paying any attention to the booth. We naively assumed she was cleaning the bathrooms as the previous excursion returned moments before. My husband politely flagged her over to let her know that folks still wanted to purchase tickets to GET ON HER BOAT. After she rudely told him that she knew full well people were in line, she made a beeline to ME to let me know that she was very busy prepping the boat for the next excursion and she was fully aware of the people in line to buy tickets TO GET ON HER BOAT. I told her (very nicely), "You're good...no worries." To which she responded, "Oh am I? Thank you. Would you like an application for a job?" The audacity of this woman continues to burn me up...especially because her crew was fabulous and these negative ratings can only hurt them. We actually bonded with the other customers because we shared her offensive behavior in common. JUDY, a few tips: 1. Don't read on if you take heed on this one. "Sell your boat". You told a customer that was your goal...put future tourists out of their misery (that we already experienced) and sell! 2. If you don't sell...hire some staff (for the love of all that is good and pure). Hire other mates for your crew and PLEASE hire someone with a personality and great customer service skills to contend with the customers. Your business could boom despite you. 3. Hire a website admin. Your webpage boasts something your boat is NOT! I loved my time out there...but someone expecting a lovely, clean, "modern" boat will be sorely disappointed. You claim the bathrooms are modern. I didn't dare enter them for the entire 4 hour trip. They were disgusting with no toilet paper, lighting, and simply filthy. 4. Update the inside of the cabin. There is NO air conditioning. There is, however, an ineffective box fan. 5. Again...and this cannot be overstated...don't offend your customers, Judy. It kind of helps your business flourish. You seem very mean, Judy. People who visit the island are generally happy and ready to have a great time. That also translates to people spending more money at your place of business if you are good at what you do. You aren't. I'm afraid that will only hurt your crew in the long run and that is disappointing. I hope they will find success because they were amazing. Judy, retire. read more

Great group of people. Rich, one of the deck hands was great and down to earth. He was eager to help, very informative with bait choices, how to actually fish and was patient with us newbies at Fishing. Always kept coming around to see if me or my wife needed anything or any help. Captain Greg always kept us laughing and would help take fish on the hook and measure for keeping it or not. Danno was helpful and kept checking up on people, quick with a joke and light up your smoke. Be honest about your fishing skills, they will teach you how to fish if you need. At the end of the trip plan on sticking around a bit as they will filet the fish for you. The deck hands work for cash tips so bring cash. You tip at the end, they work for everyone and it's how they make their living. So be kind in tipping. We caught grouper and snapper on this trip. Much better fishing tours on the island. This is a pump and dump style fishing trip. They don't care about how many fish you caught, even if you didn't catch anything. They care more about taking your money and maximizing the amount of people on the boat. I went on a full day trip (AM &PM trip) for $130. Didn't catch a single thing. The deck hand said it's the worst he's seen, but the Captain refused to move. The girl at the ticket counter has an attitude and comes off like a complete b*tch. When we told her we didn't catch anything she shrugged us off. The captain was so worried about his personal life he didn't care at all about the group he took fishing. Yes the price is good, but spend the $120 and actually go fishing. The mates made the trip and tried helping. That's why I gave it a one star. If I could give 0 stars I would. Even though the current was strong captain Phil made a huge effort to ensure all on the Boat were enjoying fishing. The mate, Brian, ensured that the rods were all baited and the fish were removed and marked accordingly. Each time that I called and made reservations, Judy ensured that spots were saved for my husband and I. She even returned my call when I called in and the call was missed. I highly recommend this boat. There is a pay parking lot, however, if you are staying at the end of Key West and are already paying for parking then I suggest you walk. We are going again today. This review in no way represents the crew as they appeared to do the best they could after switching boats due to battery problems. The problem came from Judy who we had to stand in line to see to get a ticket on the other boat because it was smaller. She purposely took people behind us. My wife and I were standing right in front of her and she looked right through us to give her frequent flyers priority. When I spoke up, she gave me the dirtiest look and asked the next group of people behind us if they wanted to go. I was appalled by her actions and wanted to complain to her manager. I looked at some of the other post and see that she is the owner. I will never book through Tortuga again and will tell all everyone I know who love to come fishing in Key West to stay away from this charter company. I went out with this fishing charter this week. It was easy to reserve reservations over the phone. Payment was processed at the dock which was simple. The boat has morning and afternoon outings. The afternoon trip comes back to the pier at 6 pm so it was kind of like a "sunset sail" as well as a fishing trip. The fish were not really biting that day but the crew was nice and helpful making the best of a slow day. Nice experience overall & at a reasonable price. Most disappointed after patronizing this charter for 7 years and sending in over 30 customers. What happened, change of crew? Won't be back. Waited over an hour to get started because the battery was dead. Heard the crew comment this happened twice prior to arrival. Backup plan? Finally got out on the water and a group of 5 with their own poles seemed to only matter, whereas the rest of the 43 of us didn't get a bite. Past crew would move us to spots where bites occurred as soon as the line hit the water. Not this time, we hardly moved the boat. To many on the boat, 48, standing room only. Thank goodness for competition, maybe more astute captains and crew will pay attention to how repeat business is done and appreciated. Goodbye Tortuga! Miss the good olé days. read more

I sooooooo wanted to go in this fishing trip. We showed up at 1:30pm like we were instructed when we made reservations and were told "sorry, we don't have enough people and are not going out today." Our fault for missing a phone call at 1pm, thought it was a work call while on vacation. We were also told many other boats didn't have enough either, why don't they pool people together during a slow season and rotate who goes out? Not the best charter not the worst. It was ok with a few positive and a few negative. Needed 1 more deckhand.

Fishing can be hit or miss, so you cannot expect to catch fish every time you go...otherwise it would be called "catching"! Nevertheless, we went for tuna, and the seven people on the stern pulled them out one after the other. The other 12 or so people caught next to nothing. I didn't appreciate how several of the people in back seemed to have a relationship with the crew and therefore were put in the back, even when I was there first. I appreciated less that the whole design of the day, in terms of location and chumming for the tuna supported ONLY the efforts of the seven in back. I had read more than a few negative reviews online before going but chalked them up to people who didn't catch fish. I wish I would have listened. The two stars are for the beautiful boat ride. read more

We had a great time on this boat. My wife my children and I were all ripping lips as soon as we were anchored. Everyone on the boat caught plenty of fish. Moses helped everyone had a great attitude and made the trip a blast. Everyone on board had a great time. My daughters (both under 12) caught a lot of fish and were kinda wild but no matter how many birds nests ended up in their reels nobody was upset with them. Fun crew, cheap price, good fishing. The only reason they get 4 stars is because they do a lot of moving spots. Even at a place where most people on the boat were catching fish, we moved to another spot after only like 15-20 mins. But this really was a great charter I would definitely recommend this one to family and friends. They sell 3$ beers on board also lol not bad. We had beginners on board to experienced fishermen and everyone had a great time and caught some fish. read more
