Our bucket of grunts and yellow fin waiting to be fileted
    Linda P.

We are a family that enjoys fishing, whether it be our little local pond stocked with sunny's or surf fishing off the coast in LBI. We have gone out several times on deep sea fishing party boats in LBI so are familiar with the routine. Knowing that Key West has some of the best fishing in the world, I researched fishing trips. Many of the trips that are highly reviewed on Yelp are private charters, meaning that a fisherman will personally take you out on his boat and help you fish. These private charters will run you $600 or more...... So I looked into the party boat option. What an amazing day we had on the Tortuga Party Boat!!! Luck was definitely on our side. 1. The boat has the capacity to bring 49 guests to fish. The day of our trip there were only 16 guests booked. It was like a private charter. 2. The first mate Ray was just a great guy. Friendly, helpful. He took us to four different locations, and sure enough, our last stop turned out to be the motherload of fish. As soon as we dropped our lines in that beautiful azure clear water, we would get a bite. At the end of the day we had over 3 lbs of fish that were fileted for us. We ended up going to Turtle Kraals with our filets and had a great dinner. I highly recommend the Tortuga. The captain and the first mate went out of their way to search the seas so everyone would have a successful fishing trip. Finally, as the Tortuga pulls in to dock and the First Mate begins to cut up and filet all the fish that were caught that day..............a huge group of Tarpon will gather at the boat to eat the scraps that are tossed overboard into the water. This is an amazing site to see. (Tarpon are gigantic fish, some 6 feet in length). On our day, an Goliath Grouper, that must have weighed over 250 pounds, also came by to scavenge. It was incredible to see a fish that large so close!!!

    my 25 lb grouper!

For $55 each my boyfriend and I had a wonderful morning on the ocean. We both caught several fish and I even caught the biggest of the day! There are a lot of charter companies in KW that will charge $800+ for a small group but the "party" atmosphere was nice. You meet great people from all over and shoot the breeze while your'e fishing. The crew was so helpful, knowledgeable and fun. By the end of the day the two of us caught about a dozen fish, 9 of which we could keep. Unfortunately the 25 lb grouper had to go back in the sea. If you're down in KW, definitely go out on Tortuga!

Grouper. Has to throw it back because it was out of season, but fun to catch!

Judy the owner was super. We called her after our fishing trip in Key Largo got cancelled due to wind because she was recommended by our Key Largo charter as they were refunding us. I was a little worried going on a single recommendation (instead of meticulously researching), but I'm so happy I didn't. Tortuga IV was everything a good party boat should be: easy to book! easy to find (right next to accessible public parking)! SUPER awesome, knowledgeable, and helpful captain, crew (Jeremy & Kevin were great). We weren't getting into fish at first, and they moved around, kept us motivated, and even stayed out a little longer so we could all hook into some great fish. They really cared about us catching fish and weren't indifferent to our experiences, as I've noticed some crews can get with their party boat customers. Clean heads (bathrooms) and reasonably priced beer and water on board. Totally great experience. Would highly recommend.

Decided last minute to spend our last day in the Keys doing a little deep sea fishing; we're so glad we did! We had 3 stops total and Mick was so quick to help us anytime we had a fish or a snag. Between the two of us we caught about 16 total, 8 of which were big enough to keep. We took them across the dock to Dante's for their hook & cook per the recommendation of the crew; they were spot on. We loved everything we tried. They were so friendly & accommodating! I wasn't dressed for fishing as it wasn't in the plans and Mick brought me a long sleeved shirt to wear so I didn't freeze. They have snacks and drinks available on board for cash only, don't forget to bring some cash for the guys as well; they work for tips only and are SO GREAT!! If we're ever back in the area we'll for sure use them again.

Such a great time! Captain Bill and Josh were the best, if you're looking for a fun and casual trip in the keys this is it. We ate our yellow tails about an hour after

Not the best charter not the worst. It was ok with a few positive and a few negative. Needed 1 more deckhand.

A couple weeks before our trip we reserved a center console from Boat Rentals of Key West for 8 hours. On the day of the rental we arrived at their office in the Marina at Downtown Key West. The staff was courteous and gave us all the needed instructions we would need for the day. The boat was clean, gassed up and ready to go. We had a blast exploring the area and reefs around Key West. The Boat performed and ran great. Me and my wife have rented boats before and never have we encountered a staff as professional and courteous as the people working at Boat Rentals of Key West and their boats are in very good condition and obviously well maintained. In the future, we will be back to Key West and we will only rent a boat from Boat Rentals of Key West. Thanks again for the great service. Our boat rental was the highlight of our key West trip.

I never leave bad reviews, but in this case it was absolutely necessary. - "Boat Rentals of Key West" is a broker, but does not disclose at time of booking. After making a deposit on phone, we were sent to pickup our boat at a place called "Paradise Boat Rentals" at Murray Marine on Stock Island. - We arrived at Paradise Boat Rentals at 1pm where final payment was charged. Upon which, the owner "Rocky" recommended he guide us through the narrow channels to main water. Very shallow area that surrounded the location. - When we hit open waters, Rocky waived us through and we were on our way. 35 minutes later, the boat broke down. From 1st contact, it took them 3 hours to come assist us. - By 5:15pm, we had everything swapped over to a replacement boat. We used this replacement boat to tow Rocky 45 minutes closer to KW (out of courtesy). - It was cloudy, windy and the water was very choppy that day, not to mention, we were in a flat bottom deck boat. It was extremely rough to say the least, and we still had to make it back to Murray on Stock Island. - By 6:45pm we could barely see. We realize at this time, the replacement boat has NO lights and NO navigation device. My wife calls Rocky on his cell, and explained we were about 500 yards from his marina, but needed an assist due to no lights or nav - it was not safe trying to navigate the narrow channels without someone experienced with such area. He begins screaming at her and accusing us of being intoxicated. I get on the phone and he begins cursing "I know what F...n games you are playing", "I'm not coming to help you", "Just wait until you get here and see who you are messing with", etc, etc. I explain to him that 3 of us on the boat, including driver had not taken 1 sip of alcohol that day. - At this point, due to the situation and the threats from Rocky, we pulled over to a bulk-headed area and called the local authorities. They agreed we should not drive the boat as it was very dangerous to do so without lights. They then helped return the boat and coordinated our vehicle pickup from Murray. At 9:30pm, we were finally returning to our hotel. - We are now going through the channels of dispute with our credit card company for right at $400 in charges (from both this broker and Paradise rentals)! Rant over. Proceed with caution.

The day we went, the waves were pretty choppy. I got in the water and panicked. Kelly, our guide, expertly made sure I got back to the boat. Spencer, our dive master, helped me up and reassured me the whole time. I got to spend the next couple hours hanging out with Spencer and robin (the captain), which honestly, was a great time. What I loved is how committed they were to safety, and also making me feel valid in my decision to abort the dives. My partner successfully completed two dives and had a fantastic experience with Kelly guiding him. If/when we're back in key west again for diving, we will definitely book with Lost Reef again!!

Lost Reef Adventures...the worst dive shop that I have encountered in 30 years of scuba diving…read more The negatives: The owner, Nick, was extremely unfriendly to the point of being hostile. He had a serious attitude problem and had no idea what the concept of "customer service" meant. He just stares at you, waiting for you to say something...it's really creepy. After telling us to show up at 7:00 for the morning dives, no one from the shop bothered to show up until 7:45. The crew was only okay. The dive master acted like this was an annoyance to be taking us out on a dive...like he just wanted to get this over and done with. He just swam around for 45 minutes until it was time to re-board. The boat pilot told us, "We're not leaving the dock until you get your gear ready." There was one guy (with a mullet and ear rings) that was pretty cool and very helpful. The equipment was fair, but had some issues. The first tank that I hooked up to only had 1200 psi, turns out that 1/4 of the tanks onboard had previously been used and not removed or refilled. The fact that they all had the rubber covers on the valve (indicating a fresh tank) made it very confusing as to which tank to use. My dive buddy's regulator was inoperable. The dives were fair at best. I guess Key West really isn't that great for sea life when compared to the USVI or Belize, buy the dive master didn't even bother to point out sea life. EVERY dive I've been on in 30 years had a dive master that took pride in his/her job and did their best to point out - things to see - during the dive. I told the travel office on the base at Sigsbee not to recommend them. There are vastly superior shops like Southpoint Divers and Captain's Corner that will give you a much more pleasant experience. I dove with Southpoint on all of my subsequent dives in Key West. The positives: The boat was great - lotsa space for everyone, safety equipment was plentiful, and the safety briefing was well done. As I mentioned before, one of the crew (lives in Roatan, Honduras and was visiting his daughter) was very helpful but unfortunately, he was the exception. The BCDs, masks, and fins were fine. There's not really anything else positive that came out of my experiences. Do yourself a favor and use one of the other dive shops in Key West.
