I love how they have so many varying price points in used hockey skates from $30 -$500 plus. They will also take donation equipment here :-) They also sell new/used baseball, lacrosse, softball, soccer, etc. A great local business staffed with true sports and outdoor buffs ready and willing to help you out. We visit here at least a half dozen times a year to trade in hockey gear and pick up some new or new to us sports equipment. So to be honest I had zero idea this place even existed until about a month ago. I'm just going to get the only negative out of the way- the parking lot is awful. It's nowhere big enough for the size of this place considering how busy it always seems to be. That being said. This place is awesome they have such a huge selection of used equipment and a great trade in process. Anything that they won't take for trade you have the option of donating it which is great. I was able to find a nearly brand new pair of used skates for a reasonable price. It's a pretty cool store to walk through, and all the staff are super friendly and helpful. Another great resource for outdoor rentals! They have an insane amount of gear available to rent, mostly snowshoes and ski equipment from when I visited this March (downhill, cross country, snow blades, etc). As far as I know, this place is the only retail store in Edmonton that offers SKATE rentals!! I know you can rent skates at certain skating rinks and Hawrelak Park during their public skating hours in winter, but renting skates for use away from the rental area/facility is available at Totem. They have these interesting hybrid recreational skates that look like hockey skates with some attributes of figure skates. For $15 for the day and sharpened ready for use, this is a great option for those who want to try skating or don't own their own pair. The staff are also knowledgeable and awesome at fitting customers with the correct equipment and sizing, depending on what you're doing and where you're going. This place has a lot more than I thought it would! We went here in search of a bike, but they didn't sell used bikes. We did end up walking around and I was really surprised by the amount of clothing they sold! They focus their products on camping and outdoor sports. We went in the back area and they had used sports stuff available. My boyfriend looked over their baseball stuff and said they didn't have very good quality stuff, but it was very expensive. The staff were very friendly, offering help and even offering ideas for places to go in search of used bikes. This is an awesome local business if you are looking for all seasons of camping and sporting gear. Think Mountain Equipment Co-op but local and on a smaller scale. The part I like most about their business is the back of the store -- the Sports Exchange, where you can buy and sell used equipment. I have found some great things there over the years and I always like peruse that part of the store to see what they have. Prices are in-line with what I expect and they often have great sales. Staff have always been friendly and helpful when I needed them. They also have a repair and rental shop to get things sharpened/waxed/fixed etc. Or you can rent gear for those outings where you just don't own the equipment yet. read more

Man, I hate this place. Two winters ago, I acquired the cross-country skiing bug, but I didn't want to shell out a lot of money to get my own equipment. A friend suggested I try Totem's used gear shop, as she'd seen some decent-looking things there. I was, and obviously still very much am, a xc neophyte, but I was appalled by my treatment there. After locating a pair of skis I thought might be suitable and were in my price range, I tried to get the xc area staffer to weigh in on the matter. She told me I'd "have to try them out to know if they'd work" for me, and didn't even offer to help me check the camber on the skis. She busied herself with straightening the pole displays and tucking laces back into boots. I'll never know if I wasn't worth her time because it was obvious I was a newbie, or because I was looking at used equipment, or ... ? Man, there are so many mean things I want to say, but I can't do it here. In any case, I didn't hang around much longer, and went on to drop quite a bit more cash on a complete (and brand new) package at another shop in town. Totem is great for sporting goods. They got everything from kayaks to mountain gear to hockey. I really love this place because not many people think of it when they need something so they have lots of stuff other stores don't have. A friend and I were recently looking for a hockey net to put in his backyard rink and the regulation size net we wanted wasn't available anywhere. We (mainly him) looked everywhere. Finally he thought of Totem Outiftters and not only did they have it but it was cheaper and came with a shooter tutor. While we were there waiting for the net I started browsing around the goalie equipment and they also had really good used equipment for good prices. Oh, how I love Totem! Totem has great prices for ski rentals. If you are looking for downhill or cross country skis to take out, totem is the place to go. They also have good prices for ski waxing. I know that summer is gone and fall is following, but I have to let everyone know for next season - canoe and kayak rentals are great here! They are cheap and they actually have decent boats! Who would have thought?! They have a great selection of paddles and shoes and they have some really great deals. If you are looking for a whitewater kayak though, Totem is not going to be your one-stop-shop. They don't have any. But I'm hoping that by next year, they will (don't get your hopes up though). Back to reality - winter! If you are looking to rent some skates for some good ol' Canadian hockey, or even just for fun, their skate rentals are average-pricey in my opinion. Totem is located on the southside and (as usual) in a strip mall on 99th street. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside the shop opens up to a variety of sports equipment and clothing, usually of the seasonal kind. The best part about Totem is that they have a really terrific used equipment store as well as a separate store for fixing your equipment (like sharpening skates or fixing other things). I bought a pair of good quality Bauer skates with a bit of scratches etc and quite old in general, for a fair price of $70. Sharpening costed me only $5.00. I had quite a nice experience buying my first pair of skates (yes, I'm only learning - don't laugh!). The store also seems to have rentals which is very useful for snowboarders, skiers etc. planning a trip to Jasper or something. I think rental and used items are a great way to learn a new sport before investing in expensive equipment. In that sense, I really feel that Totem matched my needs very well. Their snow shoes/clothing collection seemed a little limited as I could only see Columbia brand of items (this was in winter, though). When compared to the prolific MEC it might not win. But the used store/rentals/equipment mechanic part of it is a huge reason to become a regular out here. read more

Still not here in June, and told that there are shipping problems and that there is nothing they can do about it. They will phone me when it arrives. Came in to the rentals side to get a pair of skates for myself and my girlfriend. It didn't take very long to be helped as the gentleman quickly identified our sizes. Simple process to just pay for your rentals and be on your way. Only thing I will say is that we didn't receive anything confirming that we returned the skates. I believe that they could change the process around where they preauthorize my credit card and then I pay upon return. Otherwise great experience! read more

Decent little outdoors shop. Found 2 books on scrambling in the rockies that i couldnt find at chapters. lucked out and found the shoes i was looking for on the sale rack in my size. There was 1 pair, size 11 1/2. What are chances... I am went in twice in 2 weeks, neither time did a sales person approach me? Which is good for me, but i imagine some shoppers appreciate some service. They have a deal where you gain points when you join. I saved $5 on my second book. was a nice suprise! The main benefit of shopping here is the trade in service, as well as selling your old equipment on consignment. The selection of new downhill skis is limited but definitely adequate. I sold my old skis and bought a new pair. The service was pleasant and helpful. I defiantly felt well taken care of. The repair shop next door is super convenient. Great store as far as product goes, but the service is the issue. We popped in to the service dept at 5:02 pm on a Saturday on a long weekend to pick up my skis, they were in for a quick wax. We didn't realize they were closing at 5 rather than 6, our mistake, but no need for the snarky attitude from not one, but 2 staff members, telling us they were closed. Completely rubbed me the wrong way. We did get my skis, even said thank you so much...and got no response. Pretty sad TO! You've lost all future business from us! read more

Think twice, or more before you spend your hard earned dollars at totem. The customer service at totem outfitters is absolutely horrible. Here's why, Some staff have absolutely no, or very little, product knowledge, and may be better off flipping burgers somewhere. Some staff don't seem very customer service oriented. And their pricing policies are NOT consumer friendly. My recent experience involved the purchase of three identical items. Two items priced equally, with the third item priced higher. The staff, including the cashier, and what I perceived as a manager would NOT price all three items at the lower price. Most businesses without even a thought would give you the lower price on identical items, but NOT totem. And to make matters worse and show the true colors of the staff and this business, when I went back a day later they had ripped the lower price sales tags off, with remnants of the old tag still on the package, and had increased the price to the higher priced item. NOT the type of business I want to deal with and you shouldn't either! read more

Poor Service - Great new / used selection - amazing prices

I used to love this store. I've bought several sets of used equipment and new equipment, traded in all of my sons hockey gear for the past 13 years and rented ski equipment on a couple occasions. I've always recommended them to friends. Everyone has always been pleasant to deal with and I've had no problem...until last week! I rented 2 sets of snowboard gear and a set of ski gear to take my nephews from Australia and my son out to Marmot. It worked out to be the same price for a 2 day rental at totem as one day at the hill which was a bonus (even though we were only skiing one day). The main reason to rent from Totem was to save time on ski day and start skiing as soon as we got to the hill. We were on the hill bright and early and ready to ski but... my sons skis were not set to his boots. I could understand if it was a slight error, but both skis were set to completely different sized boots and neither being for my son's boots. Extremely annoyed, I had to get the Marmot rental shop to do the adjustment and they charged me $17. When I told Totem I was very disappointed and asked to be reimbursed the $17, they said they could not reimburse me but only offer me a credit and they also offered to credit me $50 for the full ski rental. That sounded great and I was very happy with that... except that the credit could only be used in the rental shop and could only be used within 1 year. I rarely rent equipment and knew there was a good chance I wouldn't use it within a year so I asked if I could get a credit in the store instead. They said they were not allowed to do that so the rental shop was the only place I could use the credit. I explained that I likely wouldn't use it so it was of no value to me. I didn't understand why I couldn't use it in the store since it's the same company. The manager then walked over to the skis and suggested that perhaps they were somehow accidentally adjusted when I put them in my vehicle. I explained that it would be extremely difficult for both skis to adjust. He then walked over, abruptly placed $17 on the counter and said "here's your $17 from my pocket". I took it and walked out and felt like I was being a horrible person for asking for the money I felt I was entitled to receive. So basically, if nothing goes wrong, this is a great place. But if something does go wrong, expect to be treated like crap. read more

I went to totem to sell some used hockey equipment that my son had outgrown. The girl at the front was polite and asked what I had, and marked my bag and I proceeded to the back. The guy asked what I had and I showed him everything. He quickly pointed out that there was a small hole one of the pairs of hockey pants. He said, we are already overstocked on this stuff and did not want any of it. Needless to say I was pissed off. Totem needs to get their act together. We purchased a pair of ski boots for our 10 year old son 3 days ago (December 30th). The store was very busy but when we did finally get help, the gentleman that helped us was great. As they didn't have any junior boots in his size, our son was sized with a women's boot. When we asked about the return policy, we were told 30 days with receipt...no problem as they were not on sale. We ended up finding our son a junior pair of boots at another store so went back January 3rd to return them. They had been sitting in the box since purchase. Upon returning to the store, they looked at them and said one of the boots had scratches on it and that the manager said we could get the full amount back with an in-store credit or we could lose 10% as he had to now mark it down 20%. I then asked to speak to the manager directly and he said that he was doing me a favor by meeting me half way. WHAT?! The problem is they were returned "exactly" the way they were when purchased! I explained that to him and even showed him that their display tag was still on the boot he was referring to so probably had scratches on it from being a display. We were fine with buying it that way as it was his size (and we didn't really notice to be honest) and no one at the checkout said anything at purchase YET we were penalized $22.00 for bringing them back unworn, exactly the way they were purchased! I told the manager that that was horrible customer service and that they were never worn...our son received new skis for Christmas and the bindings weren't even on them yet and again pointed out the display tag clearly still attached to the one boot! His reply was, "How do I know that?" I said "Why would I lie about that?!" and he just stared at me. Wow! I have never been belittled like that in a retail establishment! It is very disappointing as he insinuated we were lying!!! They have a lot of great stuff but, unfortunately, due to the way we were treated by this manager, I will no longer shop there! Very sad that he treats customers that way:( BUYERS BEWARE...make sure you REALLY look over your stuff before purchase so you do not encounter an incident like this if you decide to return!!! read more

So disappointed with our yearly skate exchange....store managed to lose our skates during sharpening, told to pick out another pair, found a pair, then were told it was to much of a price difference, had to pick out ANOTHER pair....needless to say I wasn't impressed. I came in for skates because I have wide feet with fallen arches and most skates are useless for me. Totem had an interesting mix of brands in my size (11/12) and it gave me a chance to try different styles of skate. This really helpful young guy named Dustin (serious hockey player) helped me and my kids find skates that fit properly. I ended up getting skates for me and my two kids. It was almost closing time, and I get nervous about that but nobody seemed put out. I recommend looking here because some of the skates were high-buck stuff for sale at very good prices. I would have probably given the store a "4" on it's own, but Dustin's attitude and helpfulness (and patience with kids) has this dad clicking "5". Next time I need skates for my family I will go to Totem and wait until Dustin is available. read more
