I lived in Colombia for 6 months a few years ago and this is not just the closest I've been since I'd say I'm pretty much there when I have a set meal - almuerzo at the back of the market. It has a great family atmosphere and some interesting stalls. It is under immediate threat of demolition at the moment. To be replaced by chain stores and luxury flats. But a major campaign is underway. Check out this site for more information: wardscornercommunity.org.uk

The first time I went past Sven Sisters underground station I walk ed right past it. If fact I only found it walking in to a cafe only to find it had a door at the back into this hidden Latino world. There was music playing sunny tunes, with children dancing around, old people just chatting away in Spanish. The place seems more on eone gaint social club than a load of shops. Had a huge meal with fresh juice, followed by a Colombain strong coffee. Than just enjoyed the vibe. Often pop in when passing. Top tip go on saturday for a hair cut, a meal, stock up on books, dvds, music for learning the language. Or just pop into for a coffee or frozen juice on a stick. And if all this eating and drinking gets too much there is always the suit and corset maker to hide the sins.

We enjoyed walking around and seeing a wide variety of food options! The whole market area was clean and organized when we got there at 9am. No lines yet. Long lines did start forming around 9:45am when the hot foods were ready but moved pretty quickly. We tried: * The Ginger Pig - Traditional Sausage Roll * Wild Mushroom Risotto - Spelt Risotto with Truffle Shavings * Turnips Greengrocer - Chocolate Covered Strawberries * The Black Pig - The Best One With Crackling * Turkish Deli - Turkish Delight & Turkish Coffee * Bread Ahead - Crème Brûlée Donut

It is a farmer's type market with some prepared foods, which were top notch. We walked the entire thing and grabbed as much as we could to eat. There are plenty of food places just outside the space that are open later as well. I got some meat sticks from a vendor, sort of farmers market style. There was also another stand that had fruit in a cup with chocolate. Our best deal were some arepas that were half off because it was closing time and they wanted to get rid of them. This isn't the place to take pictures, but rather to immerse yourself in all the goodness that is here.

You can find everything from brilliant pies (Raven's Den in particular), awesome cheese (Lincolnshire Poacher and others), fresh veggies (Earthworks and others), fresh fish and meats... not to mention cupcakes and other sweet treats! We usually start by getting a coffee for the husband from the vendor with the mobile coffee bar (the machine is in the back of his van), and then wander the markets and end at the Merchant for a cup of tea for me. As long as there is a rainbow biscuit on the way even our toddler is happy.

I loved that everything was put in paper bags, not plastic. I read that the market has been around since the 9th century, which I loved knowing. A short walk down the hill brings you to beautiful neighborhoods with cobblestone roads and the huge cathedral. It's a lovely area overall.

There's probably only about 15 stalls, but you could do a decent food shop here consisting of fruit & veg, milk, eggs, bread, fish, olives, every type of sausage you can imagine (I settled on pork leek and chilli), amazing cuts of pork and even pre-prepared goodies like pies, chutneys and cakes. And if you get hungry while browsing you can grab a little pie to eat there and then - I enjoyed my butternut squash & spinach, and my hubby devoured his chilli beef & cheddar before I could even snaffle some. If pie isn't your thing, there was also curries, toasted sarnies and all other sorts of goodies. There was also a stall selling hot drinks which even on this sunny Sunday had a sizeable queue. ...when can I go back?

Poor love, she does live in Primrose Hill after all. A less offensive way to put it might be that the market is run by and caters for the diverse mix of people living in the area. My Nigerian uncle calls it 'Little Lagos' and goes there when he visits because he hates England and I think it helps with his home sickness. On top of being the best place to buy herbs, spices, fruit, veg, fabric and electronics from all over the world, the atmosphere is like carnival crossed with Eastenders. Last time I popped down with a friend to pick up some £1 nail varnish from the £1 nail varnish man and he took such a fancy to her that we got it for free. I would advise anyone who hasn't been to this market (or the 'third world') to get down there sharpish because with all this 'development' and bloody Olympic nonsense there is no telling how long this incredible place of colours, smells, music and culture will be around.

Like, I paid £1 for two big avocadoes in Whitechapel market yesterday, and you can get 6 for £1 at a stall in Dalston market. Them plus loads of other wacky and wonderful items and get ups. The further into this market you get, the further away you're getting from your cosy little white English middle class idyll. So, butchers selling bits of animals you just won't find in a 'British' restaurant. Nigerian food stalls selling dried catfish and strange ground up fish. Stalls selling beautiful waxed African fabrics. And just strangeness and rarities. There's a lot of stalls. And a lot of culture, real culture. So, it's just nice to take a stroll down. I didn't buy anything, but there was a lot I could have bought. And in the 'countdown to Christmas', you can probably find something for all the family along the length of the market. Loose yourself in Dalston, and find yourself somewhere in the stalls of Dalston market.
